- Chapter 76.1 - The Drizzle Continues
Crimson clouds filled the sky, and the setting sun’s afterglow scattered down, streaks of light falling upon Lu Sheng and Qi Zhenshu, bathing them in a soft, gentle radiance.
Qi Zhenshu’s usual aloof eyes held a tenderness Ruan Ru had never seen. She remained rooted to the spot, watching the two in front of her, feeling an extraordinary warmth and harmony.
So, even a person so impeccably detached could possess such an earnest and passionate gaze.
From their intimate gestures, Ruan Ru vaguely guessed their relationship. The small spring bud that had quietly broken through the soil of the young girl’s heart withered and dried up in an instant, before it even had a chance to grow and bloom.
Qi Zhenshu pulled Lu Sheng over to Ruan Ru, a slight smile gracing her lips, “Ruan Ru, this is my wife, Lu Sheng.”
Headmaster Ruan had invited Qi Zhenshu to his home as a guest during the last rest day of the ten-day cycle, and that was when she met the Headmaster’s younger daughter, Ruan Ru.
In the following days, she had encountered Ruan Ru at the academy twice more.
Qi Zhenshu had always been relatively unknowledgeable and unconcerned about matters of admiration, and she hadn’t noticed the girl’s feelings at first. It wasn’t until today, after school, when she saw Ruan Ru waiting specifically for her outside the academy gates.
The unconscious shyness and adoration in the girl’s eyes made Qi Zhenshu realize the implication.
Along the way, Qi Zhenshu treated Ruan Ru with even more coldness and distance, but Ruan Ru’s enthusiasm was not extinguished by Qi Zhenshu’s attitude in the slightest.
Qi Zhenshu was considering how to tell Ruan Ru about her marriage when she looked up and saw Lu Sheng.
She was delighted to see Lu Sheng coming to visit and, at the same time, happy that she could finally make things clear to Ruan Ru. She naturally held Lu Sheng’s hand and introduced her, seeming completely oblivious to Ruan Ru’s feelings.
This both revealed her identity and prevented Ruan Ru from feeling too awkward.
“This is Headmaster Ruan’s daughter, Ruan Ru. Her elder sister is my classmate.”
Qi Zhenshu deliberately brought up Ruan Ru’s mother and sister, the meaning of which was very clear.
To her, Ruan Ru was merely the daughter of her teacher, the sister of a fellow student, and nothing more.
Ruan Ru’s eyebrows drooped, and her eyes welled up with moisture. Lu Sheng saw her expression and lost her inclination for watching the drama, feeling a touch of pity instead.
She was just thinking about whether she should say a few words of comfort when she heard Qi Zhenshu continue, “It’s getting late, Ruan Ru. You should head back quickly so your family doesn’t worry.”
After speaking, Qi Zhenshu didn’t wait for Ruan Ru’s reaction, but pulled Lu Sheng into the courtyard.
“I think she looked like she was about to cry. Is it really okay to just leave her like that?”
The moment the door was closed, Lu Sheng tugged on Qi Zhenshu’s hand and glanced outside. Ruan Ru was still standing there, and when Lu Sheng looked over, the girl gazed back pitifully.
Qi Zhenshu fastened the latch. Her beautiful eyebrows furrowed, and she looked at Lu Sheng suspiciously, her tone a little cold, “Are you feeling sorry for her?”
The four short words were like a stick of frozen, aged vinegar popsicle—sour and chilly.
Lu Sheng found it amusing. What on earth is that supposed to mean?
“Didn’t you say she’s the Headmaster’s daughter? What if she goes and complains to your Headmaster, saying you bullied her?”
“When did I bully her?”
Qi Zhenshu disagreed with what she said. She was already married, and telling Ruan Ru the truth was the most normal thing to do. How could that be considered bullying?
She pondered with a frown, then added, “Headmaster Ruan is an upright person; he won’t be partial.”
Headmaster Ruan was from the Hanlin Academy, knowledgeable and well-mannered. He had previously served as the Libationer of the Imperial Academy and the Grand Tutor of the Crown Princess. Later, due to his mother’s old age, he specially resigned to return home and take care of her, becoming the Headmaster of White Crane Academy.
“I know your Headmaster is a person of virtue and talent, a master scholar of his time,” Lu Sheng said, going along with her words and smilingly praising him.
Qi Zhenshu had mentioned Headmaster Ruan in her letters, and every word showed reverence and respect.
“Hurry and wash your hands, we’ll prepare to eat.” Lu Sheng took the book satchel from her hand, patted her arm, and urged her.
She placed the book satchel on the table inside the room. Before she could turn around, her waist was encircled by a pair of pale, slender arms, and her entire body fell into a soft embrace filled with the scent of ink.
Qi Zhenshu hugged her from behind, pulling Lu Sheng into her embrace, resting her chin on Lu Sheng’s shoulder, and taking a deep breath.
Lu Sheng turned her head to dodge slightly, pushed Qi Zhenshu’s head with her hand, her face flushing, and said softly, “I’ve been on the boat all night; I have an odor.”
Following the push of her hand, Qi Zhenshu sniffed Lu Sheng’s hand, her voice serious and earnest, “There is a little odor.”
Lu Sheng angrily broke free from her embrace, turned around, wrinkled her nose, and looked at Qi Zhenshu discontentedly, biting out, “Then don’t hug me!”
This person really has no sense of romance! Usually, in this situation, shouldn’t you say there’s absolutely no smell, no matter what?!
The curve of Qi Zhenshu’s lips gradually widened. She pulled the person who had puffed up like a blowfish in anger back, kissed her on the cheek, and said gently, “It’s a fragrance.”
“Nonsense.”
That sounded too fake.
Lu Sheng had perspired quite a bit during the journey; how could there be any fragrance!
What a person! So dull!
Lu Sheng fiercely criticized the stinky bookworm, who didn’t even know how to say comforting words, in her heart again.
A mischievous smile spread across her eyes. Qi Zhenshu held Lu Sheng’s hand and brought it under her nose, saying with a smile, “Smell it yourself.”
Lu Sheng sniffed suspiciously. Before she could distinguish any smell, she heard Qi Zhenshu say again, “Does it smell like meat?”
“The aroma of stewed meat.”
Hearing this, Lu Sheng immediately realized that Qi Zhenshu’s previous words about having an odor and a fragrance were clearly her deliberately teasing her again.
Lu Sheng looked up and saw that person’s eyes full of playful smiles again.
“What kind of fragrance is that!” Lu Sheng pretended to be ‘angry’ and reached out to strike Qi Zhenshu’s shoulder.
This person is clearly full of cunning and has a belly full of mischief!
I was foolish to think she was dull and slow just now!
“How can you say that?” Qi Zhenshu rubbed her shoulder and retorted softly, “Meat aroma is also a fragrance.”
Lu Sheng was indignant. She didn’t care about her fondness for this person’s face anymore. She reached out and pinched her cheek, squeezing hard, and accused her fiercely, “You’re bullying me!”
“This doesn’t count as bullying.” Qi Zhenshu allowed her to pinch for a while before holding her hand.
“Hmph! If this isn’t bullying me, then what is!” Lu Sheng said, unconvinced.
Teasing me on purpose every time; how is that not bullying?!
Her fair, delicate face was flushed with a soft pink from anger, her bright, clear eyes were charming, and her slightly upturned lips were pursed, making her look incredibly lovable.
Qi Zhenshu looked down at her, her thick eyelashes blinked once, and her deep brown pupils faintly held a layer of shimmering light.
“You bad…”
Her cheek was covered by a soft warmth. As Lu Sheng looked up, her gaze fell into a pair of deep, sky-like pupils, and the words on her lips were completely drowned out between their mouths.
Cupping her cheek, Qi Zhenshu’s cool lips kissed away every syllable Lu Sheng was about to utter.
Qi Zhenshu’s kiss was gentle and soft, like the fine rain of spring, slowly moistening Lu Sheng’s lips.
After they finished eating, Lu Sheng boiled water and went to take a bath.
She washed very thoroughly, scrubbing off all the dust and meat aroma from her body, leaving only the clean, refreshing scent of bath beans.
The enveloping steam made Lu Sheng’s face rosy. As the towel wiped across her skin, it took away the warm water droplets. Lu Sheng’s movements gradually slowed, and her heart began to pound faster.
The last time Lu Sheng came to Qingzhou, Qi Zhenshu’s kisses often left her restless, but because the children were present, the kisses were brief and stopped there; the two did not have any further intimate contact.
Tonight, in this room, only she and Qi Zhenshu were present, which inevitably caused Lu Sheng to let her mind wander.
Lu Sheng lightly dried her hair and walked out of the washroom. Outside, a crescent moon, half-hidden by floating clouds, hung in the night sky, emitting a faint, soft silver light. It obscured the shining stars and draped a layer of hazy white gauze over the darkness.
The evening breeze blew gently, caressing the treetops. The branches on the trees swayed slightly, rustling softly.
The air carried a cool, damp moisture. Lu Sheng looked up at the heavy, dark clouds in the sky.
Judging by the look of it, there would be a heavy rain tonight.
Seeing Lu Sheng walking back from outside, Qi Zhenshu looked up, her eyes soft, “Finished washing?”
“Mhm.” Lu Sheng lowered her voice, trying to keep her rapidly beating heart from sounding shaky, “Do you want to wash?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Lu Sheng felt her voice was excessively delicate and soft, sounding like an unspoken invitation no matter how she heard it.
Qi Zhenshu’s eyes flashed. Lu Sheng quickly tried to remedy, “I still have hot water on the stove. Do you want to wash up while you’re at it?”
“Wait a little longer. I’ll go after I finish reading this.” Qi Zhenshu lifted the book in her hand, her tone calm.
“Okay.” Lu Sheng’s racing heart instantly slowed down.
Qi Zhenshu lowered her head again, sitting upright and concentrating on the flowing script on the paper.
Lu Sheng’s heart sank a little.
Judging by Qi Zhenshu’s state, it seems she doesn’t have any special plans for tonight?
Seeing her still standing to the side, Qi Zhenshu looked up from the desk, her voice much softer, “If you are tired, you should rest first. You don’t need to wait for me.”
When she said this, Lu Sheng completely understood.
