- Chapter 50 - Taking Care
“Lu Sheng.”
Sensing that the person in bed showed signs of waking, Qi Zhenshu quickly stopped what she was doing and called her name softly.
She had repeatedly wiped Lu Sheng’s body three times until late afternoon before Lu Sheng’s fever finally subsided a little.
“Qi, Zhen, shu.”
Lu Sheng still had her eyes tightly shut, her lips gently moving as she mumbled the three words indistinctly.
“I’m here.” Qi Zhenshu replied softly, leaning in to wipe the sweat from her forehead.
“Don’t.” Lu Sheng murmured quietly.
Qi Zhenshu paused the wiping motion, her eyes darkening.
What did she mean by ‘don’t’?
The person in bed’s eyelashes suddenly fluttered rapidly, and her eyes abruptly opened, staring blankly at Qi Zhenshu.
“Awake?” Seeing her wake up, Qi Zhenshu concealed the hint of displeasure in her heart and spoke to her in a low voice, “Would you like to eat something?”
Lu Sheng had slept for nearly a day, and besides the medicine that had been poured down her throat when she was delirious, she had basically consumed nothing.
“Thirsty.” Lu Sheng’s mind was a mess, and it took her a while to react.
“I’ll pour you water.” Qi Zhenshu put down the washcloth and got up to pour her a cup of water.
Lu Sheng tried to prop herself up to sit, but her arms were sore and weak, completely unable to exert any force.
Seeing this, Qi Zhenshu set the cup aside, bent down to help her sit up, and then held the cup to her lips.
With little strength in her body, Lu Sheng leaned against Qi Zhenshu, drinking the water in small sips from her hand.
The scent of soap mixed with ink, wafting towards her, only made Lu Sheng’s already muddled mind feel even dizzier.
Qi Zhenshu’s embrace was so fragrant and soft.
With the cup empty, Qi Zhenshu asked, “Do you want more?”
Lu Sheng shook her head woodenly.
“Do you have an appetite?” Qi Zhenshu put down the cup and said, “I’ve warmed some porridge for you on the stove.”
“Mhm.” Lu Sheng responded quietly.
Having been lying down for a day, her stomach was already empty.
Qi Zhenshu half-embraced Lu Sheng, reaching for the clothes Lu Zheng had brought and placing them on the bedding, then pulling them to spread them open.
Lu Sheng stared at the thin undergarment for a long time before suddenly startling awake, realizing the state of her body under the covers.
She was currently completely naked, leaning against Qi Zhenshu?!
Her body instantly froze, and all the blood rushed to her cheeks, making her already peach-colored skin turn a deep crimson, as if bleeding.
“No strength?”
Not seeing her move for a long time, Qi Zhenshu reached into the quilt, took hold of her hand, and, just like she used to dress her daughter, helped Lu Sheng put one arm into the sleeve.
“I, I can do it myself.” Lu Sheng was flustered and embarrassed.
When she first woke up, she admittedly didn’t have much strength, but now that she had recovered a bit, she was much better.
Lu Sheng lowered her head and put on the other sleeve, then went to bend down to tie the laces, but suddenly froze again.
She was naked? Who took off her clothes?
Was it Qi Zhenshu?!!!!!!
Lu Sheng widened her eyes, slowly, jerkily, and slowly looked up at Qi Zhenshu.
The moment she raised her head, her forehead was covered by a cool palm, immediately followed by someone’s deep voice, “Why is your face so red? Are you still running a fever?”
Lu Sheng’s stunned look, in Qi Zhenshu’s eyes, was simply due to being a little confused from the fever, and she didn’t overthink it.
“Seems a little hot still.” Qi Zhenshu pulled the cotton coat from the bedside and draped it over her, then helped her lean back on the bed, instructing, “Don’t catch another chill.”
With that, she turned to wring out the washcloth, meticulously folding it into a neat small square, and placed it on Lu Sheng’s forehead.
“Rest well, I’ll go bring the porridge.”
Qi Zhenshu’s series of actions were extremely natural and smooth; before Lu Sheng could react, she was already out of the room.
“A-niang.”
Not long after Qi Zhenshu left, Tangtang ran in, hugging her cloth tiger.
Coming to the bed, the little one had just kicked off her shoes and was about to climb onto the bed when a slightly cool voice came from the doorway, “Lu Qi.”
The little one flinched, stopped her climbing motion, stood aside obediently, and turned back to the doorway, calling out softly, “Mãma (Mother).”
“What did I tell you this afternoon?” Qi Zhenshu walked in carrying the porridge, asking with a stern face.
“A-niang is sick.” The little one lowered her head, her voice weak.
This afternoon, she wanted to see A-niang but was stopped by Mãma, who said A-niang was sick and told her not to disturb her.
But Tangtang missed A-niang too much.
When Tangtang was sick, she wanted A-niang to be with her.
When A-niang is sick, she must also want Tangtang to be with her.
The little one pouted unhappily, secretly turning to look at Lu Sheng, her feet remaining still, “I want to stay with A-niang.”
Qi Zhenshu frowned. She didn’t want her daughter to come over, firstly, for fear of disturbing Lu Sheng, and secondly, for fear that the child was too young and could easily catch the sickness.
Lu Sheng looked at the mother and daughter, both equally unyielding, and her heart felt warm.
She propped herself up and moved outwards a bit, rubbed the little one’s head, and said gently, “A-niang is sick, Mãma told Baby not to get too close because she is afraid Baby will catch the sickness from A-niang, and Baby will get sick too.”
“Tangtang is not afraid of getting sick.” The little one puffed out her chest, then looked at Qi Zhenshu.
“Lu Qi.” Qi Zhenshu was unmoved, pressing her voice as she called out again, her gaze directed towards the door.
The little one still wouldn’t leave, mumbling reluctantly, “Mãma can stay with A-niang.”
“Silly girl.” Lu Sheng chuckled, pinching the little one’s ear, “Mãma is an adult.”
“Tangtang is an adult too.”
Tangtang can now eat by herself, dress herself, and even bathe herself. When A-niang and Mãma are not at home, Tangtang can take care of herself.
Tangtang is an adult too.
Qi Zhenshu frowned.
Was Lu Qi a little too clingy to Lu Sheng?
Looking at the two, who were at a stalemate, Lu Sheng helplessly pointed to the end of the bed and said, “Qi Zhenshu, get her a stool and let her sit a bit further away.”
Keeping a distance should prevent her from being infected.
“Tangtang will get it herself.”
The little one happily ran off and pulled a long stool, sitting where Lu Sheng had pointed.
Qi Zhenshu frowned, ignoring her ‘disobedient’ daughter. She handed the porridge to Lu Sheng, her voice softening, “Do you have strength in your hands?”
The same words made it hard for Lu Sheng not to recall the earlier scene. She forced a smile, hiding the shame in her heart, and replied quietly, “Mhm.”
Lu Sheng held the porridge and drank in small sips. Qi Zhenshu took a hard-boiled egg from the side, gently tapped it, and began to peel it.
Her fingers were white and flawless like jade, her knuckles slender and long, and her nails were neatly and roundly trimmed. Her movements were clean and smooth, very pleasing to the eye.
Before long, a perfectly round and unblemished egg was placed in Lu Sheng’s bowl.
“Thank you.” Lu Sheng bent her brows and smiled at her.
Before Qi Zhenshu could speak, the little person beside them proudly interrupted her, saying, “This egg was specially picked by Tangtang for A-niang.”
Just now, Aunt said she wanted to boil an egg for A-niang, and Tangtang actively ran ahead to pick the egg from the chicken coop.
“Baby is so good.” Lu Sheng winked at her, smiling and praising, “Thank you, Baby.”
Qi Zhenshu pursed her lips and lowered her head to peel the second egg.
Lu Sheng took a bite of the egg, then said to Tangtang, “The egg Baby picked is very delicious.”
“Hehe, I’ll go pick more for A-niang tomorrow.”
The little one was so happy she seemed to forget herself a little, and as she spoke, she was about to move closer to Lu Sheng.
But before she could slide her chubby little bottom off the stool, she received an icy glare from Mãma.
The little one hugged her cloth tiger and sat back properly on the stool.
Knowing that Lu Sheng had woken up, the rest of the family also rushed over to check on her.
“It’s good that you’re awake, it’s good that you’re awake.” Head of the Lu family held Lu Zheng’s hand, his face full of concern.
Last night, Brother Cheng’s grave was damaged, and A-sheng suddenly fell ill. The old lady firmly believed this was due to the deep connection between father and daughter, a subtle sense gained in the dark.
“I’m sorry to have worried Grandma.”
Lu Sheng had just woken up and didn’t know that Lu Huacheng’s grave had been robbed, nor did she know that the old lady, despite the family’s objections, insisted on going up the mountain this afternoon to burn more paper offerings for Lu Huacheng.
“The one most worried in this family isn’t this old woman.”
The Head of the Lu family spoke the words for Lu Sheng to hear, but her eyes were fixed on Qi Zhenshu beside her, and the meaning of her words was quite clear.
“The entire day you were sick, Ah Shu was busy in and out, she burned three pots of water just helping you wipe the sweat.” The Head of the Lu family pointed to the bedding and the clothes on the bed frame, “These clothes and bedding were all changed by Ah Shu for you, Ah Shu worked the hardest.”
The old lady was very observant; she could see that while Lu Sheng and Qi Zhenshu were not as distant as before, compared to Lu Zheng and Zhuo Yu, they still lacked intimacy.
Having a rare opportunity to play matchmaker, the Head of the Lu family naturally went to great lengths to praise Qi Zhenshu, hoping to push the two a step further.
After eating, Lu Sheng’s mind was completely clear. With the Head of the Lu family’s mention, she fully realized what Qi Zhenshu had done for her while she was unconscious.
Took off her clothes!
Wiped her whole body!
And not just once!!!
And it was said in front of the entire family! Lu Sheng was so embarrassed she wished she could disappear on the spot.
She lowered her head, pretending to be weak, and said, “Grandma, I’m a little tired.”
“Oh, oh, then you rest early.”
The Head of the Lu family didn’t dare to delay her rest, gave a few instructions, and then left, taking the rest of the people in the room with her.
Including Tangtang, the little one who was hindering the two mothers from being alone.
Qi Zhenshu saw that she was sweating a lot again and asked, “Would you like another wipe down?”
“Mhm.” Lu Sheng nodded, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.
Qi Zhenshu went out to fetch water and came back. Lu Sheng quickly propped herself up on her arm, stammering, “I, I can do it myself.”
It was one thing when she was in a coma, but now that she was fully conscious, to let Qi Zhenshu help her wipe her body—Lu Sheng was about to explode from shyness.
The hand holding the washcloth paused. Qi Zhenshu looked down at the person on the bed.
A faint blush covered her tender, fair face, and a pair of eyes, holding a gentle, watery gaze, flickered slightly, conveying a sense of shy awkwardness.
Is she shy?
Qi Zhenshu suddenly understood, but at that moment, a strange desire to tease her arose in her heart.
She leaned down and sat next to Lu Sheng. Lu Sheng seemed startled, staring at her blankly, her eyes suddenly flickering, like a frightened little rabbit.
Pitiable and lovable.
Qi Zhenshu composed herself, her thin lips parted, and she spoke two words in a deep voice: “Lu Sheng.”
“Mhm?”
Seeing her suddenly turn stern, Lu Sheng was confused.
“You and I are wives bound by a marriage contract.” Qi Zhenshu said seriously, “You are sick, and me taking care of you is simply my duty.”
“Take off your clothes. I’ll wipe the sweat for you.” Her delicate eyebrows raised slightly, her expression unperturbed and utterly earnest.
“No, no need, I can do it myself.” Lu Sheng froze for a moment but quickly reacted, waving her hands in refusal, “I’m already better.”
Author’s Note: Poor little white rabbit Lu Sheng, she won’t even know when she’s been eaten.
