- Chapter 101.1 - Qin Feiyan & Princess Changning Extra Story 1
February, the weather was starting to warm but still carried a chill, with a slight coolness in the air.
Qin Feiyan was packing her luggage for the trip the next day, when Yang Jinlan pushed the door open and walked in, holding two thin spring garments.
Yang Jinlan walked up to her daughter and placed the spring clothes on the desk. “The clothes are mended for you.”
“Thank you, Mother.” Qin Feiyan smiled and replied, folding the clothes and casually stuffing them into her pack.
Seeing how Qin Feiyan folded the clothes, Yang Jinlan frowned. “That’s not how you fold clothes.”
“I packed them pretty well, didn’t I?” Qin Feiyan stopped what she was doing and looked at the bundle, finding nothing wrong with it.
“If you put them in like that, when you take them out to wear tomorrow, they’ll be as wrinkled as rotten salted vegetables. Go on, step aside.” Yang Jinlan slapped her hand away, pushed her to the side, and complained.
Qin Feiyan obediently made way for her, standing aside and watching her mother laughingly as she grumbled and tidied her things for her.
Yang Jinlan unpacked the bundle Qin Feiyan had prepared, spread the clothes out again, and refolded them neatly, muttering, “The girls that people like are the ones who are more careful and considerate. If you act like a rough man, sloppy and messy, which girl would want to be with you?”
Knowing that Qin Feiyan liked women, Yang Jinlan naturally thought about what kind of woman other young ladies would like.
“I understand.” Qin Feiyan nodded honestly, watching her mother’s folding technique.
Hearing her words, Yang Jinlan stopped what she was doing, turned her head, and looked at her daughter.
In the past, whenever she brought up finding a wife, Qin Feiyan would always reply that living alone was fine. But today, she had changed her tune and agreed with her.
Yang Jinlan narrowed her eyes and scrutinized her daughter.
“What’s wrong?” Qin Feiyan was a little puzzled by her gaze.
Yang Jinlan’s eyebrows arched, and she smiled with delight. “Yan’er, tell me honestly, do you have someone in your heart?”
As soon as she spoke, Qin Feiyan was stunned for a moment, and then, for some reason, Princess Changning immediately came to mind.
Seeing her mother’s joyful expression, Qin Feiyan shook her head with a wry smile. “No.”
Clearly, Princess Changning did not count as the person in her heart.
Since returning from Qinzhou, Qin Feiyan would occasionally think of Princess Changning, but she attributed this recollection to the ‘artificial respiration’ that was not quite a kiss.
Lu Sheng told her that ‘artificial respiration’ was a way to save people, but afterward, Qin Feiyan still felt a little uncomfortable, always feeling that this method was a bit too frivolous towards a young lady.
Although Xiliang had open customs, unmarried women still highly valued their reputation.
Qin Feiyan tossed and turned all night, originally planning to talk to ‘Miss Liang.’ If ‘Miss Liang’ was willing, she would be willing to take responsibility.
But what she didn’t expect was that not only was she given the cold shoulder the next morning, but ‘Miss Liang’ also instantly transformed into Princess Changning.
Later, Qin Feiyan saw Princess Changning a few more times at the post station. Qin Feiyan secretly observed her but didn’t detect any abnormality in her expression, and she genuinely let go of her intentions.
However, in her twenty-plus years of life, this was the first time Qin Feiyan had such close contact with someone else, so it was inevitable that the person would occasionally come to mind.
But she didn’t believe that this recollection could be attributed to her having feelings for Princess Changning.
“Really no one?” Yang Jinlan looked at her daughter suspiciously.
A few days ago, she had taken Qin Feiyan to meet a few young ladies. Seeing her in a daze now, she assumed she had taken a liking to one of them.
“No.” Qin Feiyan nodded.
Seeing no hesitation on her face, Yang Jinlan withdrew her gaze in disappointment and continued to tidy the package in her hands.
Daughters from ordinary families would start thinking about romance around thirteen or fourteen, with some getting married as early as sixteen or seventeen, and the later ones all married by their early twenties.
But her daughter, who had traveled north and south with her father since childhood, had developed a masculine temperament. She would turn twenty-three the following year, yet seemed to have no interest in matters of love, which truly worried Yang Jinlan.
Of the three Yang sisters, the eldest, Yang Yulan, became a grandmother four years ago. The younger sister’s daughter was nineteen this year, got married last year, and gave birth to a baby boy last month.
Only she, not to mention being a grandmother, hadn’t even become a mother-in-law.
“When you return from Qingzhou, Mother will take you to meet a few more young ladies,” Yang Jinlan tied a tight knot around the package, turned her head, and said to Qin Feiyan seriously.
“Mother…”
Before Qin Feiyan could speak, Yang Jinlan cut her off. “Don’t say you’re not anxious. If you’re not anxious, your mother is going to die of anxiety.”
“If you don’t hurry up, even Youyou will be getting married and having children in a few years.”
Qin Feiyan said helplessly, “Mother, little Youzi is only four years old this year.”
“Four-year-old children already have girlfriends, and you’re still alone,” Yang Jinlan rolled her eyes at her.
During the New Year, the family teased Zhuo You, saying they would marry the baby cousin in the cradle to her. Zhuo You furrowed her brows and replied seriously that she had promised Tangtang that she would marry her when they grew up, so she couldn’t marry the little cousin.
Qin Feiyan was speechless.
Yang Jinlan struck while the iron was hot and quickly looked at Qin Feiyan. “That Miss Bai from yesterday was good. She’s from a respectable family, has a gentle nature, and is pretty.”
Her gaze was intense, and Qin Feiyan didn’t dare to disobey, quickly nodding in agreement. “She’s quite nice.”
Since the New Year, Yang Jinlan had dragged her to meet many people. This Miss Bai was indeed the most pleasing to the eye among them.
“I think she was quite satisfied with you too. When you come back from Qingzhou, spend some time getting to know her better,” Yang Jinlan nodded in satisfaction, and also took the opportunity to complain about Qin Guanghan. “It’s all your father’s fault for sending you to Qingzhou at this critical moment, it’s such a delay.”
The more Yang Jinlan thought about Miss Bai, the more she liked her, and she happily smiled. “Tomorrow, I’ll have Matchmaker Zhang sound out her intentions.”
Qin Feiyan was resigned and could only agree, promising her mother that if Miss Bai was interested, she would invite her to the opera after she returned from Qingzhou.
After their farewell in Qinzhou, Qin Feiyan thought she would never meet Princess Changning again, but unexpectedly, a few months later, she took on the job of being her bodyguard again.
Upon seeing Princess Changning again, a faint, hidden joy surged in Qin Feiyan’s heart, and she naturally raised a happy smile toward Princess Changning.
Seeing that Princess Changning was alone, with no accompanying maid or guard, Qin Feiyan guessed that she was traveling in disguise this time, so she didn’t dare to use her honorific title, only smiling and calling out, “Miss.”
Qin Feiyan was wearing a smart, practical outfit, and her figure was tall and straight.
Her face had well-defined features and a very heroic look, yet her eyes were particularly gentle. Her amber pupils were bright and clear, and her smile was exceptionally beautiful, like the warm sun in spring.
Beneath the veil of her veiled hat, Princess Changning’s gaze fell upon Qin Feiyan’s cheerful smile, and the corners of her mouth unconsciously curved upwards.
Noticing the emotion she had been infected with, Princess Changning immediately withdrew her gaze and replied in a light voice, “Guard Qin.”
The light words extinguished the joy in Qin Feiyan’s heart.
Through the thin veil, Qin Feiyan couldn’t clearly see Princess Changning’s expression, only that she glanced in her direction before gracefully stepping onto the carriage.
After returning from Qinzhou, Qin Feiyan had asked Qin Guanghan about Princess Changning, but her father was reluctant to say much, only telling her that he was entrusted by an old acquaintance.
Thinking of Princess Changning’s distance, Qin Feiyan did not enter the carriage compartment but sat outside with the coachman, Old Yang.
When they arrived at the pier, Qin Feiyan saw that it would be inconvenient for Princess Changning to alight in her skirt, so she subconsciously reached out to offer a hand.
Princess Changning paused her movement to step out of the carriage, but she did not take Qin Feiyan’s hand. Instead, she grabbed Qin Feiyan’s forearm and used it to step down.
Qin Feiyan lowered her gaze and followed behind her.
The pier was bustling with people. Qin Feiyan put aside the scattered thoughts in her mind. She walked half a step behind Princess Changning, fully concentrating on observing the surroundings and the crowd around them.
After boarding the ship and finding their private room, Princess Changning removed her veiled hat. Although her face was still covered with a thin veil, the pair of dazzling, starlit eyes that were revealed still couldn’t hide her astonishing beauty.
Qin Feiyan looked away, turning her head to look at the river view outside the window, trying to dispel the ripples and gloom on her heart’s surface.
The ship sailed, and for a long time, no new passengers appeared in the private room. Qin Feiyan was worried about how she would manage to be alone with Princess Changning throughout the journey when she fortunately encountered Qi Zhenshu, who was also heading to Qingzhou.
After chatting with Qi Zhenshu for a while, Qin Feiyan noticed that Princess Changning looked unwell and kindly offered to massage her to relieve her discomfort, but she saw the intimidating coldness in her eyes.
The condescending gaze and the unrestrained authority pressed heavily on Qin Feiyan’s heart, making her once again acutely aware that the person before her was a noble-born Imperial Princess.
It also made Qin Feiyan tell herself to simply stick to her duty as a guard and not entertain any further presumptuous thoughts or actions.
However, fate had other plans. In the evening, she wanted to open the window to let in some air, but the river wind blew Qi Zhenshu’s papers all over the table.
First, due to the rocking of the boat, Qin Feiyan flung the papers in her hand, scattering them all over Princess Changning’s head and face. Then, she accidentally held Princess Changning’s hand while picking up the papers.
