- Chapter 96 - A Friend, Not an Enemy
Leaving the illusion realm, Lin Yanyu felt utterly exhausted. Waves of pain surged through her body, forcing her to draw sharp breaths. Her vision blurred, her mind foggy as though she had forgotten something important.
Looking around, she realized she was sitting cross legged against a wall. The dragon scale armor she had worn had vanished, but Piaoran Axe was still tightly gripped in her hand. The vast, unfamiliar demonic energy that had helped her slay Xiao Xianyi was now completely gone.
Only the spiritual shield formed by the Qingfang Bell still surrounded her, the bell itself hanging quietly around her neck.
“Changxin!” Lin Yanyu suddenly noticed that Qin Changxin was missing and called out urgently, “Where’s Changxin?! Did anyone see ugh!”
A metallic taste rose in her throat. She coughed up blood, clutching her chest and gasping for breath, while hastily forming hand seals to heal herself.
Not far away, a group of demon slayers were gathered around what seemed to be the blood leopard’s corpse. Hearing her shout, two of them rushed over.
“Changxin fainted and has already been carried off to the healers,” said Zhuang Jingwei as she hurried up and reached out her hand. “She only lost a lot of blood nothing more serious. Don’t worry.”
Lin Yanyu let out a small breath of relief and took her hand to stand up, but her legs gave out and she nearly collapsed again.
“I’ll carry you, Sister!” offered Feng Xianchen, who had come along with Zhuang Jingwei. “You were trapped in the illusion, fought the blood leopard for so long, and even killed it inside the dream you must be completely drained.”
Lin Yanyu didn’t argue. She transformed into a black cat and curled up in Feng Xianchen’s arms, half closing her eyes, ready to rest. But then came a chorus of shouts “Chop it!” from the other demon-slayers. Unable to resist, she turned her head toward the noise.
As Feng Xianchen walked toward the city, she explained apologetically, “When you were caught in the illusion, the elder slayers wouldn’t let us take you back until they’d confirmed the blood leopard was truly dead… They’re still dealing with its body now.”
Lin Yanyu saw the leopard lying in a pool of blood, surrounded by slayers some skinning it, others pulling its fangs.
The demon king who had terrorized both realms for decades the greatest villain in the story was finally dead. It was all over.
Feng Xianchen kept fussing over her asking if she was in pain, if the healing elixir was working. Half-conscious with pain, Lin Yanyu could barely answer. She idly batted at the Qingfang Bell, watching the corpse dissection until they went too far to see, then finally let her eyes close and drifted to sleep.
When she woke again, she murmured repeatedly, “Princess… Zhu Wansheng…”
In her dream, she recalled what Xiao Xianyi had said before vanishing completely “The princess of Lianzhou can never return.”
The princess’s body was still possessed by Zhu Wansheng’s soul. Could Xiao Xianyi’s words mean he had used some forbidden art to bind the two together?
“The princess is still in the Valley of Healing Dawn,” came a familiar voice. “Lady Lu Qiuyun is watching over her. Feng Xianchen and Senior Sister Zhuang already took Zhu Wansheng there don’t worry.”
That voice jolted Lin Yanyu fully awake. She flipped over and shouted, “Changxin!”
She was still in cat form lying on the pillow beside Qin Changxin, face to face.
Qin Changxin looked pale, clearly still weak from blood loss, but she smiled faintly and reached out to stroke the cat. Lin Yanyu pressed her cheek against hers.
“Why are you so clingy?” Qin Changxin asked softly, smiling through her exhaustion. “I told you I’d be fine.”
Lin Yanyu gave a small hum in reply and burrowed into her arms as usual.
But Qin Changxin suddenly coughed twice, startling Lin Yanyu.
Only then did Lin notice that she herself was wrapped in many bandages, her whole furry body reeking of medicine probably irritating to the weakened Changxin.
She quickly pulled away, but Qin Changxin reached out and scooped her back in, tucking the little black head under her chin.
Finally, being at the real Changxin’s side, Lin Yanyu could breathe easy. When she saw that Changxin didn’t seem so bothered by the smell, she began recounting everything she’d experienced inside the illusion.
Qin Changxin listened in shock. If the blood leopard hadn’t seen that vision of the future city where humans and demons coexisted and tried to recruit her, Lin might have been completely controlled by him!
“At the end… I think it was the remnant soul of the black dragon sealed inside Piaoran Axe that saved me,” Lin Yanyu said. “If the dragon hadn’t condensed her demonic energy into armor to protect me, I would’ve died again under the blood leopard’s flames.”
She paused, puzzled. “Why would the Black Dragon help me, though?”
Qin Changxin was just as confused.
“In the academy records,” she said slowly, “the former demon lord, Black Dragon Yunxi, was a tyrant addicted to slaughter. But after you condemned the blood leopard, she ‘appeared’ to save you?”
“Pretty much,” Lin Yanyu admitted with a wry smile. “I even cursed her while yelling at the leopard. Never thought she’d end up saving me. She’s been dead for years her remnant soul can’t speak. Maybe there was more to her story than we know.”
Could it be that the Black Dragon wasn’t a true villain at all just someone forced to play that part?
“Fragmented memories can twist the truth,” Qin Changxin nodded. “But since she saved you when you were in danger, it seems she’s no longer our enemy.”
“Exactly. Otherwise you wouldn’t be seeing me right now,” Lin Yanyu said, resting a paw on her arm with lingering fear.
Qin Changxin squeezed her paw and held her even tighter.
Having slept earlier, Lin Yanyu was wide awake now. Seeing that Qin Changxin wasn’t planning to rest, she asked, “Where are we now?”
“In the royal palace the Imperial Infirmary,” Qin Changxin replied.
“What did the physicians say?” Lin Yanyu asked anxiously. “Is it really just blood loss?”
“It is,” Qin Changxin smiled. “You, on the other hand, were badly hurt. After Feng Xianchen brought you back, you slept for an entire day. The Valley’s special medicine must’ve worked wonders you’re not even feeling pain now.”
Lin Yanyu’s ears twitched up in surprise, then folded down again as she leaned into Qin Changxin’s embrace, falling silent for a while before changing the subject. “You said Zhu Wansheng was taken to the Valley of Healing Dawn? Before he died, the blood leopard said the princess could never return to her body. Does the Valley have a way?”
“Yes,” Qin Changxin nodded. “While we were unconscious, the cat demons from the Valley came one was Eighteen, the one who fought us before, and the other was the guard Yingxian from Hanlan City. You should remember her the tabby cat from that wonton shop on North Street.”
Lin Yanyu blinked. “But when we were fighting the blood leopard, neither of them showed up…”
“There were many formations all over the city,” Qin Changxin explained. “Each used the blood leopard’s inner-essence pearl as its core they must have been set up long ago. The two of them went to destroy those first. By the time they got here, the battle was over. But Yingxian gave me a blood-restoring elixir that’s how I recovered so quickly.”
“The Valley really has amazing medicines!” Lin Yanyu sighed. “Once I’m healed, I’ll go thank them properly.”
“I’ll come too,” Qin Changxin said. “But before that, we have to return to Zhuzhou and bring Ye Yaozhi with us.”
Seeing Lin Yanyu’s puzzled look, she sighed softly. “Yang Hengyu’s crimes are unforgivable. The Feng family plans to execute her burn her body before the public in seven days. Elder Feng Mingchi came last night and told me. To truly release Ye Yaozhi’s heart, we should let her see Yang Hengyu one last time.”
