- Chapter 90 - The Blood Leopard Appears
After leaving the illusion, Lin Yanyu leaned against Qin Changxin, still shaken.
“I didn’t expect the ‘Blood Leopard’s’ illusion to be so realistic,” she murmured, feeling her body still trembling. “If you hadn’t been by my side, I would have fallen for it!”
“It’s the Qingfang Bell,” Qin Changxin patted her back while holding her tightly and explained, “Without the Qingfang Bell, I wouldn’t have been able to enter the illusion either.”
She lightly shook the Qingfang Bell in her palm. Its crisp, pleasant chime sounded in Lin Yanyu’s ears, easing her tension a bit.
“We may have still underestimated the ‘Blood Leopard’,” Lin Yanyu said, glancing at the Piaoran Axe beside her. “Just a small internal energy bead almost made me lose control and willingly become his puppet.”
“No matter whether human or demon, as long as there is attachment in the heart, inner demons can take advantage of it,” Qin Changxin comforted her. “If one person can’t overcome it alone, then two people face it together.”
Lin Yanyu nodded, put away the Qingfang Bell and the Piaoran Axe, and held his hand. “Let’s go meet up with Feng Xianchen and the others. Refining the internal energy bead took longer than expected, so we need to hurry!”
The two left the princess’s chambers. Lin Yanyu transformed into a black giant cat, signaling Qin Changxin to climb on. Once he sat on her back, she spread her wings and black feathers, soared towards the sunlight, and followed the trail of blood.
By noon, a time when yang energy should be at its peak, the two found the journey stifling and heavy on their chests.
“The speed at which the dark clouds gathered is extraordinary. Our lord just said he would move the ‘Blood Leopard,’ but how far could it have traveled in such a short time?” Qin Changxin said in a low voice.
“That depends on his mood,” Lin Yanyu replied. “If he doesn’t feel assured about Zhu Wan Sheng, he certainly won’t go far.”
She used spiritual energy to sense for a moment, then flapped her wings and turned toward South Street, worried: “Demonic and blood energy are gathering there, and so are the dark clouds. Feng Xianchen and the others may have already encountered the ‘Blood Leopard’!”
“South Street is stationed with exorcists sent from the Academy to Lianzhou. The lowest-ranked among them are at least Purple Tan grade, with some approaching Silver Tan grade,” Qin Changxin recalled. “If a fight breaks out, they could hold him off for a while.”
Lin Yanyu understood she was trying to reassure her, but she was still used to thinking the worst. She responded briefly and increased her speed.
She knew very well that “sheer numbers” could not easily defeat someone like Xiao Xianyi.
In the story’s decisive battle, at least three state level exorcist forces participated. But during that battle, exorcists who fell under illusions fought and killed each other, suffering heavy casualties, until Qin Changxin and her party arrived to prevent further loss.
South Street is the second-busiest area of Handan City after East Street. When they arrived, they saw stalls and carriages scattered and destroyed, and most of the standing buildings ruined. Fires raged on the rubble. The streets were littered with bodies, including civilians, exorcists, and even the local lord of Lianzhou.
From a distance, and with little blood on the ground, Lin Yanyu couldn’t tell whether the people were unconscious or dead.
A familiar scent suddenly hit her from behind. Lin Yanyu’s eyes widened, and she quickly activated the Qingfang Bell, forming a protective barrier around herself and Qin Changxin.
In the next instant, demonic fire surged toward them, waves of heat pressing in. Without the Qingfang Bell’s protection, even ten Lin Yanyus wouldn’t have survived the flames!
As the barrier was grazed by the fire, Lin Yanyu quickly flapped her wings to retreat until she was completely out of its range, then dared to look at the source of the flames.
It was a man in dark robes. His eyebrows were sharp like swords, his eyes entirely blood-red, and his neatly combed black hair hung down to his ankles.
Just one glance made Lin Yanyu’s heart seize, and the pain she felt when she had mistakenly injured Qin Changxin in the illusion resurfaced.
It was… the “Blood Leopard” Xiao Xianyi!
He held a bloodied orange cat in his right hand and a string of vermillion prayer beads in his left, which he held palm-up toward a person floating in mid air.
“Feng Xianchen!” Qin Changxin immediately recognized her and called out.
Accompanied by the Qingfang Bell’s chime, Lin Yanyu also saw clearly strands of blood red demonic energy were streaming toward Feng Xianchen. She struggled fiercely but couldn’t break free. Her ears turned into black cat ears, and her hands quickly transformed. Within seconds, she became a beast human with black cat fur on her skin, constantly mewling.
Realizing the bell wasn’t working, Lin Yanyu’s eyes turned sharp.
This wasn’t an illusion it was happening right before her eyes!
Qin Changxin threw a set of nine talismans specially designed to restrain Xiao Xianyi.
Upon release, the talismans turned into fine streams of water, which transformed into sharp ice spikes just before reaching Xiao Xianyi.
Xiao Xianyi didn’t dodge or react, while beast form Feng Xianchen rushed forward, attempting to grab one of the spikes.
The spike turned back into water as soon as she touched it, slipping through her hands. The rest of the spikes did the same, bypassing her and heading straight for Xiao Xianyi’s face!
“That’s the ‘Blood Leopard’! Attack him!!” Exorcists below gathered, ready to strike.
Spells of various colors converged on Xiao Xianyi. He didn’t even look at them. With a few simple hand gestures, Feng Xianchen condensed the demonic energy in her hands into a shield, blocking all the spells.
“Stop! He’s turning exorcists into demons!” Lin Yanyu shouted while descending, scanning the ground for Zhuang Jingwei.
Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei had always been together. Now that Feng Xianchen was in Xiao Xianyi’s grasp, Zhuang Jingwei…
Just as she thought this, a metallic sword sound rang out. Not far away, from beneath the rubble of a building, a white light shot up. Zhuang Jingwei, holding her sword, stepped on another sword, slashing away all spells aimed at Feng Xianchen, then leaped onto Lin Yanyu’s giant cat back, retracting the sword she had used as a step.
Seeing her safe, Lin Yanyu breathed a sigh of relief, observing Xiao Xianyi while asking, “How did Feng Xianchen get captured?”
“After the ‘Blood Leopard’ appeared, we were all intimidated and scattered to use ranged spells to restrain him,” Zhuang Jingwei said, frowning. “But as soon as we scattered, he teleported behind Feng Xianchen and captured her…”
Her palm was bleeding from the struggle. Qin Changxin quickly treated the wound.
“Why did he capture Feng Xianchen?” Lin Yanyu asked again, this time looking at Qin Changxin.
“She’s a half demon, easiest to control, and she inherits internal energy from both Xuanqing and Feng Funing,” Qin Changxin said gravely. “Her movements were slightly stiff earlier he’s probably controlling her with his puppet technique!”
“What exactly does the ‘Blood Leopard’ want?” Zhuang Jingwei asked furiously. “Is he just kidnapping her?!”
“He’s been in hiding for eighteen years. If he only wanted to capture someone, he wouldn’t go to such lengths,” Qin Changxin analyzed. “Remember, he loves to incite war. Now, with humans and demons separated, and demons restricted to their territories, he needs to create an opportunity to trigger conflict himself.”
“He… wants Feng Xianchen to be the trigger for a war?!” Zhuang Jingwei immediately understood, anger burning in her eyes. “Makes sense half human, half demon, inheriting bloodlines from both realms. And she’s a descendant of Feng Funing!”
As they spoke, Lin Yanyu tried to approach Xiao Xianyi. Every time she did, Feng Xianchen would rush forward to block her, and under the puppet control, every strike targeted her critically. Lin Yanyu feared knocking Feng Xianchen unconscious would give Xiao Xianyi complete control, so she avoided the attacks and didn’t dare strike.
Feng Xianchen had clearly spotted Zhuang Jingwei sitting atop the giant cat. As Lin Yanyu retreated, she struggled to reach her, shouting, “Jing… Jingwei!! Run! Hurry!”
The dark clouds soon enveloped all of South Street and spread to other streets. Exorcists, either summoned by the lord or arriving upon hearing the news, gathered below, looking up at the robed man holding the cat, unsure whether to intervene.
Qin Changxin clenched a stack of talismans. Facing Xiao Xianyi controlling Feng Xianchen, she felt helpless.
At this moment, Lin Yanyu sensed Feng Funing’s call. She had Qin Changxin watch Xiao Xianyi, then retreated behind a building’s rubble, closed her eyes, and sank her consciousness into the Silver Tan mark.
“The dark clouds above are forming the Puppet Array. You must stop it!” Feng Funing’s image appeared in her mind, urgently. “Xiao Xianyi is concentrating to construct the array. If two more quarters pass, the array will spread through the city, turning all residents of Handan City into his puppets!”
Lin Yanyu was shocked, about to leave the spiritual realm to alert the exorcists, but Feng Funing stopped her.
“Feng Xianchen must not fall into Xiao Xianyi’s hands.” He drew a talisman in her palm. “You must mark it on Feng Xianchen, quickly!”
Lin Yanyu glanced at it, memorized it, left the spiritual realm, and returned to human form. Without a word, she leapt into the air, rushing toward Feng Xianchen.
As Feng Funing said, Xiao Xianyi remained still, controlling Feng Xianchen toward Lin Yanyu.
Lin Yanyu shook the Qingfang Bell, forming a protective barrier around herself, wielded the Piaoran Axe, and charged at Feng Xianchen.
“Run, sister! Go!!” Feng Xianchen, unaware of the plan, shouted as demonic energy surged from her arms to her fingertips, her nails lengthening and hardening.
Lin Yanyu shouted, swung the Piaoran Axe behind her, accelerating toward Feng Xianchen, and with her left hand, began drawing the talisman Feng Funing had taught her.
When she finally reached Feng Xianchen, she didn’t hesitate and marked the talisman on her forehead.
She was slightly faster than Feng Xianchen, and at the moment of marking, Feng Xianchen’s claws pierced her chest.
