- Chapter 62 - Actions Speak Louder Than Words
At the third quarter of the Wei hour, Lin Yanyu left Qi Huanju, carrying the token given to her by Qin Changxin, and headed to the library of Kuixuan Academy.
During the Qin family’s ancestral rites, Qin Changxin had already promised her that once they returned to the academy, he would take her to look up information on the “Blood Leopard.” But since Qin Changxin needed to recuperate, Lin Yanyu had no choice but to gather the information herself.
Lin Yanyu had visited the university town where her previous company was located in her past life. Compared to that university town, Kuixuan Academy was not very large, so she quickly found the library nestled against the hills.
By now, the entire Kuixuan Academy knew that Qin Changxin’s demon attendant was the prestigious young master of the demon world, sent to the human world to hunt the “Blood Leopard” Xiao Xianyi. Even if the academy’s disciples and elders harbored resentment, they did not dare make things difficult for the black cat demon who wore half a blood-stained white jade at her waist.
Still, Lin Yanyu was subjected to cold ridicule from elders who had participated in the chaotic battle eighteen years ago.
Before uncovering the truth, she would not excuse the past actions of the demon world’s ruler. She also knew that spiritual magic had always been difficult to prove; even if specialists in mental magic examined the case, they might not be able to clear the demon lord’s name.
Moreover, humans and demons in this world were deeply antagonistic. Even if the demon lord had truly been controlled by Xiao Xianyi, humans’ hatred toward her would still be natural.
Lin Yanyu spent the entire afternoon researching. She recorded all the information she obtained, as well as her analysis of the current situation, on blank spirit paper she had brought from the demon world.
After organizing the known information, she felt troubled.
Qin Changxin had been grounded by Chu Hanzi for three months and probably could not participate in the Lianzhou storyline. As Lin Yanyu sorted through the information, she considered whether she could go in place of the young master. After all, the original young master of the demon world no longer existed, and the only participants in the Lianzhou side story were Qin Changxin, Feng, Zhuang, and a minor character a supporting enforcer, Lu Xuyuan, head of the Lu family.
Her strength surpassed Qin Changxin’s; if she went to follow the plot, she had nothing to fear.
However, based solely on the information in Kuixuan Academy, she couldn’t yet convince Feng and Zhuang to follow her to Lianzhou. According to the original timeline, by the time they had enough reason to go, Xiao Xianyi’s second puppet would already be wreaking havoc in Lianzhou.
Holding the dossiers and spirit paper, Lin Yanyu sighed deeply.
“This is truly exhausting.”
“Tch, I never expected even the young master of the demon world to sigh like this!”
A not so friendly male voice interrupted her thoughts. “If the human world makes you so unhappy, why are you even out here?”
Lin Yanyu put away the spirit paper and looked up at the approaching Qing Tan exorcist. Feeling the killing intent and fighting aura emanating from him, she raised an eyebrow.
Finally, someone hostile to demons had shown up.
By the Wei hour, the black cat had not returned. Qin Changxin, worried and unable to sleep, could only vaguely sense that the cat remained in one place. Her veins were injured, preventing her from transmitting her voice to ask about it, which made her anxious.
Fortunately, Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei had returned to rest. Feng Xianchen, barely catching her breath, came over to talk to her.
“I heard from the patrolling disciples that Sister is still in the library!” Feng Xianchen said after hearing her worries. “But the library closes on time outside of exam periods, so just rest, Changxin!”
“I’m worried she might be harassed by disciples who are extremely hostile to demons,” Qin Changxin sighed. “Although I trust her strength…”
“That’s normal,” Zhuang Jingwei said, patting Feng Xianchen’s head. “When I first enrolled and went out alone, we worried the same way. You rest first; Feng and I will organize the dossiers. If Lin Yanyu comes back, we can wake you later.”
The two of them exchanged words to soothe Qin Changxin to sleep.
Zhuang Jingwei turned off the spirit lamp at Qin Changxin’s bedside, drew the screen, and activated a soundproof barrier before taking Feng Xianchen to the study.
“Have Bai Piaopeng and the others returned from visiting family?” she asked.
“By now, they should have come back a few days ago…” Feng Xianchen stopped abruptly, remembering something, and quickly went outside. “No! Those guys dislike demons the most. They might go bother Sister!”
“I’ll go,” Zhuang Jingwei stopped her. “You’re a half-demon. They dared to bully you before; I can’t trust it. Also, Changxin needs someone to watch over her.”
“Fine, but you must bring her back quickly!” Feng Xianchen said begrudgingly, clenching her fist as she left the study, sitting in a chair outside the screen to keep watch.
Zhuang Jingwei summoned her sword and flew out.
She was already very familiar with the scent of the black cat demon who had “abducted” her junior apprentice, and soon found Lin Yanyu in the training arena.
However, when she approached, she saw five exorcists squatting in horse stance, while Lin Yanyu, dressed in a black attendant uniform, was strolling in front of them with her hands behind her back, holding a… spirit binding whip as a makeshift weapon.
In the night, Zhuang Jingwei couldn’t see Lin Yanyu’s expression clearly, but she could feel the aura of a powerful being enveloping the entire training ground.
“Hey, Senior Zhuang,” Lin Yanyu stopped and greeted her with a smile. “Sorry, I was sparring with these enthusiastic young men and lost track of time. Once they finish their self-imposed punishment, I’ll head back.”
“How long will that take?” Zhuang Jingwei asked, glancing at the five men who were silent and almost burning with anger.
“About half a quarter of an hour,” Lin Yanyu said with a smile, her eyes curved. “They were just too eager to learn, I couldn’t refuse. Trust me, Senior Zhuang, it’ll be over soon.”
Zhuang Jingwei waved it off but muttered under her breath: “I don’t believe you one bit.”
Feng was truly innocent, but this black cat was full of mischief.
Seeing that Lin Yanyu wasn’t harmed and had even taught the hostile Bai Piaopeng group a lesson, Zhuang Jingwei relaxed and stood by to accompany her.
“What spell did you use on them?” Zhuang Jingwei asked, using her spiritual energy to communicate.
“I don’t know your human terms. In our world, they’re called silence and immobilization spells standard and harmless,” Lin Yanyu replied telepathically, shrugging. “These kids were clearly trying to provoke me. How could I risk a fight? If anything went wrong, Changxin would get blamed.”
“You’re very sensible,” Zhuang Jingwei genuinely praised.
“Flattering environment forced me,” Lin Yanyu said with a wry smile.
In her past life, she had entered the exorcist ranks as a demon. From starting her job to dying on duty, she had faced disdain from both humans and demons, constantly being obstructed by extremists from both sides. She was used to it.
There wasn’t much to say, so the two waited quietly for half a quarter of an hour. Eventually, the leftmost exorcist collapsed to the ground, trembling, cursed “demonic,” and scrambled away.
When the leader ran, the others dared not stay. After the spells wore off, they apologized and limped away.
“Let’s go,” Zhuang Jingwei said, summoning her sword and stepping forward, giving Lin Yanyu space. “If you don’t return, Changxin won’t dare sleep. Tonight… you must stay with her properly.”
“All right, I’ll obey Senior Zhuang!” Lin Yanyu hopped onto the flying sword and promised.
The night breeze was chilly, and the academy bell signaling lights out and bedtime carried on the wind.
Half a month ago, Lin Yanyu had memorized the academy rules under Qin Changxin’s supervision. Hearing the bell, she shrank her neck, slightly embarrassed.
“Sorry, making you stay up because of teaching those kids,” she said.
“No matter. I intended to stay up later tonight anyway,” Zhuang Jingwei replied calmly. “I came out to find you; don’t take the blame.”
“Changxin should be asleep by now?” Lin Yanyu guessed. “Otherwise, you would have ordered me back earlier.”
“She is, but without you, she wouldn’t sleep peacefully,” Zhuang Jingwei said. “To be honest, Changxin is proud yet insecure and self-blaming. Before you arrived, she endured everything alone, refusing care. That’s why our master forbade her from taking missions outside afraid she’d aggravate her injuries and leave lingering problems if she refused help.”
“Although it feels odd, I understand how much she values me,” Lin Yanyu said tenderly. “Don’t worry. I won’t go anywhere until she’s fully recovered.”
“You better keep that promise,” Zhuang Jingwei said. “Your goal in the human world is to hunt Xiao Xianyi. Even if you abandon the ‘young master of the demon world’ identity and become a humble exorcist attendant, you haven’t hesitated. Honestly, I can’t tell who is truly most important to you.”
She didn’t look back, but Lin Yanyu sensed the warning in her words.
“Words aren’t enough; actions speak louder,” Lin Yanyu said.
“I’ll supervise you,” Zhuang Jingwei said firmly.
“You can watch me all you want,” Lin Yanyu laughed.
When the flying sword landed, both women simultaneously relaxed their combative auras.
Lin Yanyu changed out of her black attendant uniform, washed her hands, and walked past the dozing Feng Xianchen and the screen to Qin Changxin’s bedside.
The subtle perception of the blood-bound master-servant bond woke Qin Changxin. She fluttered her eyelashes and quietly asked, “You’re back?”
“I’m back,” Lin Yanyu replied, transforming into a black cat and curling up by her side. “Can’t sleep?”
“You still dare ask…” Qin Changxin reached to stroke her back softly, quietly complaining. “Did you forget? I recognize cats. Without a cat, I can’t sleep.”
Lin Yanyu understood she was being coquettish and smiled gently, curling into her arms under the blanket.
“Now that the cat is back, can the little girl sleep?” she asked while wrapping her tail around Qin Changxin’s wrist, also being playful. “If you still can’t sleep, how about petting the cat?”
Qin Changxin didn’t respond verbally, but Lin Yanyu soon felt two hands on her face, gently kneading.
She squinted, letting the girl’s fingers stroke from her face to the top of her head, then lightly pressing her ears and running down the sides, like a head massage.
Lin Yanyu relaxed and enjoyed it. When Qin Changxin began rubbing her belly, she released the tail from her wrist but still occasionally brushed her hand, purring softly.
