- Chapter 59 - Confessing the Past
That night, in the master’s bedroom on Que Ling Island.
“Did you fight against the ‘Blood Leopard’possessed humans?” After hearing the report, Island Master Pu Wei asked in surprise.
“Yes, but she still escaped,” Lin Yanyu lowered her head. “I’m sorry, Aunt Pu Wei.”
“Why report this to your aunt?” Pu Wei rubbed her head. “Don’t blame yourself. Go back and take care of your partner.”
Lin Yanyu nodded and summoned Wu Ying, holding it in her palm. “Aunt, perhaps you should keep this. Xiao Xianyi’s whereabouts in the human world are unpredictable, so having one more magical tool…”
“In fact, Wu Ying was originally kept for your mother as a memento. After all, I won’t be returning to the demon realm,” Pu Wei said. “But since your mother hasn’t come to take it, and it’s been here for eighteen years, you may as well bring it back to the demon realm for her.”
Lin Yanyu was momentarily stunned. Seeing the resolute look in Pu Wei’s eyes, she hesitated, then once again thanked her, storing Wu Ying on her back and leaving the bedroom.
Outside the Herb Hall, Lin Yanyu noticed Ye Yaozhi pacing anxiously. Remembering that she had just faced her master in battle, her alertness immediately spiked. She hurried over and asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
She remembered Ye Yaozhi had rested before they set out.
“I have something urgent to report!” Ye Yaozhi stopped, her wolf ears perked up. “When you fought Yang Hengyu just now, I could clearly sense her location, but she didn’t summon me. Otherwise…”
“Otherwise, you would have lost control?” Lin Yanyu continued, “Or gone over to become her companion?”
Ye Yaozhi lowered her head and firmly said, “I would never betray my young master!”
“The woodpecker doctor watching you already told me that although you’re restless, you haven’t had the urge to go there,” Lin Yanyu said, instinctively reaching up to touch her wolf ears. “This shows two things: first, Yang Hengyu concealed your whereabouts from Xiao Xianyi; second, she only provided the ‘demon attendant’ identity as a convenient cover for you in the human world nothing more.”
Ye Yaozhi paused, then immediately asked, “Do you mean… Xiao Xianyi doesn’t know that Yang Hengyu has a demon attendant?”
“That’s just speculation,” Lin Yanyu said. “We can’t be certain of their interactions, nor whether Yang Hengyu has retained her consciousness.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Ye Yaozhi volunteered, “Then I’ll stay here. I won’t be a burden to you.”
Afraid Lin Yanyu would refuse, she quickly added, “I’ve already mingled with the bird demons here, and the island master treats me well. Once the demon hunters leave, it’ll only be us left. You don’t need to worry about me being bullied.”
Lin Yanyu did plan to leave her behind, but couldn’t help worrying that the foolish wolf might return to Yang Hengyu’s side. Still, she knew Ye Yaozhi’s temperament: since she volunteered to stay, forcing her to leave would be disrespectful.
“Alright. Tomorrow morning, I’ll inform the island master,” Lin Yanyu decided. “I’ll leave some communication talismans for you. If anything urgent happens, contact me immediately!”
“Ye Yaozhi obeys!” she said joyfully, bowing obediently.
After watching her return to her resting place, Lin Yanyu entered the Herb Hall.
The woodpecker doctor, Yu Zuo, was about to leave, and their eyes met. Yu Zuo spoke first, “I gave her medicine to repair her meridians. Don’t wake her tonight; it will hurt her.”
Lin Yanyu nodded in thanks and stepped aside. Once Yu Zuo left, she closed the door and sat beside Qin Changxin’s bed.
Qin Changxin lay on the bed, eyes tightly shut, brows furrowed, her face pale and lips colorless.
Lin Yanyu leaned in, listening to her breath. It was faint, perhaps from deep sleep, or perhaps due to severe injuries.
Sensing the demon attendant’s presence, Qin Changxin stirred, lips moving slightly.
“What do you want to say?” Lin Yanyu leaned close to her lips.
“Cat… Cat…”
“I’m here,” Lin Yanyu whispered, afraid of waking her. “Sleep well tonight. Cat will protect you.”
She paused, voice even softer: “And I will always protect you, for the rest of your life.”
Using her cat ears to nuzzle Qin Changxin’s chin, she transformed into her demon form, curling up beside her pillow quietly.
Qin Changxin fell into a dream.
She saw Lin Yanyu in black armor, holding a short dagger, rushing toward a blood-red-eyed, frenzied serpent woman, who was thrashing her massive tail. Nearby were five humans in similar attire, each holding weapons.
“Yanyu…!” Qin Changxin instinctively shouted, but found she could not make a sound.
She then heard Lin Yanyu give orders:
“Huiling, Zhimeng, three o’clock, prepare vine barriers!”
“You Bai, five o’clock, fire support! Watch the tail swipe!”
“Chuchu, follow Dazi closely, one o’clock retreat, go find the accompanying doctor, don’t waste time!”
“Yes, captain!” The five responded and immediately executed the commands.
Qin Changxin was stunned.
This was unlike what Lin Yanyu could have experienced in the demon realm; humans would not act so freely there, nor follow demons so obediently.
Moreover… she had never seen these people or Lin Yanyu’s outfit in any records.
Just as she thought this, the scene changed.
Lin Yanyu lay in a wasteland, blood pooling under her body, beside a dying serpent woman.
“Xuanmao… You’re a demon, why… are you serving humans?!” the serpent woman spat, blood dripping, unwilling. “Tell me! Why?!”
“I volunteer for these missions…” Lin Yanyu pressed her abdominal wound, breath unstable but still resolute. “Serving humans? Ha! I don’t care whether you threaten this nation. If humans did this, I… cough… I would kill them too.”
“I treat humans and demons equally!”
Qin Changxin could not watch further, rushing to Lin Yanyu’s side and crouching to lift her.
She wanted to tell her not to speak, that nothing mattered more than her life.
She thought she couldn’t touch Cat, just as she couldn’t speak earlier.
But she felt Lin Yanyu’s warmth, and lifting her, also felt her weight.
Lin Yanyu didn’t struggle, resting her head in Qin Changxin’s arms, green eyes filled with comfort.
“Do you feel… something’s off?” Lin Yanyu asked.
Qin Changxin hesitated, nodded slightly, and carried her away quickly.
“The place you’re in now is my memory,” Lin Yanyu explained. “You should know, demon attendants can share memories with their master. So… cough… everything you saw really happened.”
“You’re not the demon realm’s young master,” Qin Changxin said softly.
“I truly am not,” Lin Yanyu closed her eyes and gently nuzzled her chin as usual. “Maybe you won’t believe it, but I really came to this world after death, taking over this body.”
“Before you brought me to the demon realm, we’d never met, and there’s no record of the demon realm’s young master in the human world,” Qin Changxin said. “You… could have hidden it from me forever.”
“Yes, but I… don’t like hiding things from people I trust,” Lin Yanyu smiled. “You were harmed so badly to save me, so why… cough… should I lie to you?”
“Stop talking!” Qin Changxin wiped the blood from her face, “Just take me away. I don’t want to see you like this!”
“What if it really happens in the future?” Lin Yanyu half-joked, half-serious.
“You jinx!” Qin Changxin scolded. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. But right now… you can’t be like this!”
If Lin Yanyu opened her eyes, she would see the young girl holding back tears, biting her lip as she looked at her.
Qin Changxin slept for three full days. When she awoke, she was in a familiar room.
A screen painted with snow-covered red plum trees, a string of simple wind chimes above the window, all from her dorm in the Kuixuan Academy, Yunzhou her room with Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei, Qi Huanju.
“Meow”
A soft cat sound entered her ears. Qin Changxin instinctively turned to see green, shining eyes.
“Uuuh…” Seeing her awake, the black cat immediately snuggled close, rubbing her face and neck.
“Yanyu…” Qin Changxin whispered, realizing her voice was hoarse, likely due to backlash injuring her vocal cords and lungs.
But seeing Lin Yanyu safe beside her, she couldn’t help smiling.
“Is Feng Xianchen and Senior Zhuang here?” she asked.
“They’re still reporting to your master,” Lin Yanyu replied. “Don’t worry, just rest and heal. I’ll take good care of you.”
“I actually…” Qin Changxin started to object but remembered the pain, swallowing the words “I’m fine.”
Before the life-and-death companion, there was no need to be strong.
“Hmm?” Lin Yanyu tilted her furry head, curious, quietly waiting for her to continue.
“I had a vague sense that you were different,” Qin Changxin said. “When the demon realm young master captured me, we had a brief exchange. She wasn’t as polite as you, and would never lower her stance. You, when talking to me, always feel like a human exorcist rather than a demon hostile to exorcists.”
“Well, I really was an exorcist in my past life,” Lin Yanyu wagged her tail. “Spirit control techniques and other magic were things I studied back then. Never thought they’d be high-level spells in this world! Luckily, this body has a special identity, or I’d have no idea how to cover my tracks.”
“You don’t want the second person to know, right?” Qin Changxin asked.
“Not for now.” Lin Yanyu curled beside her hand, whispering where they could hear. “Let’s make it our little secret. I’m afraid they’ll capture me to study time-travel magic.”
“The Huixing Sword…” Qin Changxin suddenly said, “Could it be that Xiao Xianyi’s sword sent you here?”
“Maybe. I’m not entirely sure,” Lin Yanyu shook her head. “But I was burned to death by his demon fire. Perhaps a stray flame from the Huixing Sword reached me, which is why I remember his aura so clearly.”
Qin Changxin, feeling concerned, gently stroked Lin Yanyu’s cat paw.
“In the future… will you return?” she asked.
“If I go back, what will you do?” Lin Yanyu asked in return.
“I…” Qin Changxin hesitated, then decisively said, “Then take me with you.”
