- Chapter 57 - Fighting Side by Side
As Lin Yanyu had expected, the “Fluffy Relaxation Method” worked wonders, even on the coldest-tempered Zhuang Jingwei.
Qin Changxin held the warm, soft paw in her hand, feeling somewhat relieved, though still unable to completely calm down.
“We’ve never killed anyone,” she said softly, suddenly.
“Mm, I guessed as much.” Lin Yanyu lifted her cat paw and hugged her closer. “You’re exorcists, and you’re just kids who’ve recently left the academy. I understand.”
She paused. “So when the fight starts, I’ll be the one to take her down.”
“Yang Hengyu should have a recommendation letter for taking up a position at Kuixuan Academy. We likely don’t have the authority to execute her on the spot. We’re supposed to capture her alive,” Zhuang Jingwei said. “But if it’s impossible to capture her alive, it really will be troublesome if you have to intervene.”
“Oh, don’t be so polite even calling me ‘you’ formally.” Lin Yanyu smiled. “I’m not much older than you. I just have more courage and don’t shy away from ending lives. Leave this task to me. You can rest assured.”
Though she said this, she was already planning an emergency escape route.
She herself was fine whether fighting or fleeing but she had three inexperienced teammates with whom she had little synergy. They weren’t suited for coordinated group combat, and Yang Hengyu might have the upper hand.
“Relaxation time is almost over. Since you plan to capture her alive, do me a favor first.” Lin Yanyu reverted to human form and summoned ten “Spirit Binding Ropes,” laying them in front of her. “Form the array and tie the ropes to the trees at the positions I indicate.”
“But we’re not familiar with the orientation terms used in the demon world,” Qin Changxin said.
“No problem. I’ll form spirit light orbs to guide you. The orbs will mark the positions.” Lin Yanyu’s hands moved swiftly, forming seals, and the spirit energy around her coalesced into six glowing points. “Each of you takes two orbs. I’ll control the flying sword you just follow the orbs. Don’t touch the light pillars.”
She took control of the flying sword from Zhuang Jingwei, suspending it in the air, while directing the orbs to various positions.
“Changxin, release some of her demonic restraints.” Zhuang Jingwei reminded as they moved.
Qin Changxin was silent for two seconds before whispering, “I’ve already removed all of them…”
She had expected Zhuang Jingwei to be somewhat annoyed but was surprised when he smiled knowingly. “Is that so? I didn’t expect her to gain your trust so quickly.”
“I heard that the elder sister willingly wanted to form a contract with Changxin, so trust comes easily,” Feng Xianchen added. “After all, a master-servant blood pact is for life, just like… a marriage.”
“There’s a difference,” Zhuang Jingwei shook his head. “Married couples can still divorce and live, but in a master-servant blood pact, it can only be broken if one party dies…”
“Let’s not talk about that now.” Qin Changxin cut in. “I see the spirit flow in the pillars weakening. Yang Hengyu is probably about to finish absorbing it. We should split up and secure the binding ropes.”
Leaving Feng and Zhuang behind, Qin Changxin followed the orbs, her heartbeat faster than usual.
She instinctively resisted topics about the blood pact, especially regarding forming or breaking it.
Forming a pact meant establishing trust but also a forced binding. Breaking a pact required one or both parties to pay with their lives.
She had heard of an exorcist and a tree demon who willingly died to break a pact, reviving through forbidden magic, but their souls were permanently damaged and could only exist in certain locations.
She also recalled verifying with Feng Xianchen that the secluded exorcist Song Yan and banyan tree demon Murong on the outskirts of Que Ling Island were that couple.
“You’re distracted.” Lin Yanyu’s voice suddenly came from ahead, snapping her back.
Qin Changxin quickly avoided a small tree and noticed the voice came from a spirit-light orb formed by the cat. “You can communicate through spirit orbs?!” she exclaimed.
“Not for them, only for you,” Lin Yanyu admitted. “It’s a remote communication spell possible only through a blood pact.”
“How did you know I was distracted?”
“Because you strayed off course.” Lin Yanyu sighed from the other side, her tone a bit disappointed. “Actually, they’ve all relaxed, but you’re still tense. I always managed to help you relax by petting before…”
Qin Changxin smiled, seeing the orb pause at a tree, quickly tying the rope around it, and grabbed the other end to rush to the next position.
“I see the outer barrier of the light pillar thinning. Yang Hengyu’s red inner energy is decreasing,” Lin Yanyu reported. “Almost done hurry!”
Qin Changxin quickened her pace, using her agility.
But as she touched the next tree, a surge of heat struck her. She barely wrapped the rope twice before retreating at full speed.
“Get back!” Lin Yanyu shouted. “The attack has started!”
Qin Changxin couldn’t respond in time, but spirit energy rapidly formed a protective barrier around her, shielding her from the heat.
She returned to the flying sword, crouching beside Lin Yanyu, while Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei jumped on, one in front, one behind.
“What kind of formation is this?” Zhuang Jingwei asked, still tense.
“Watch.” Lin Yanyu gestured as the situation worsened.
The six spirit-light orbs she had sent earlier merged into the binding ropes, which glowed brightly. A downward-pointing triangle of light rose among the trees, trapping Yang Hengyu in the center.
“This formation isn’t of Eastern origin; I can’t explain it properly,” Lin Yanyu said. “Just know it’s ‘Water overcomes Fire.’ Whose inner energy is water?”
“Mine,” Qin Changxin said. “What should I do?”
Lin Yanyu hesitated, noticing the other two didn’t respond. “Then you’ll have to go with me. We might have to fight Yang Hengyu. Without someone to counter her fire-type energy, even escaping will be difficult.”
“You want to defeat her?!” Zhuang Jingwei was incredulous. “Stay calm! Our mission is to hold her here, not to kill her!”
“I know, but even reinforcements will fight. Better to weaken her a little now to prevent casualties.” Lin Yanyu summoned her “Floating Axe,” stretching it to arm’s length.
She leapt from the flying sword onto Qin Changxin’s “Wuyuan Fan.” “Get close; I’ll test her with fire and metal spells.”
Lin Yanyu had learned much about using demonic fire from the master of Que Ling Island and could now summon it without breathing fire.
“Just use demonic fire; I’ll handle the metal spells.” Qin Changxin’s fan bloomed with a peach blossom. She plucked a petal, tossed it into the air, and it turned into five metal petals shooting toward Yang Hengyu.
Yang Hengyu remained with closed eyes and floating feet. But the petals melted instantly upon reaching her fiery aura.
“The temperature’s extreme!” Lin Yanyu formed a needle like fire from four directions, adding attack power to her axe while defending against Yang Hengyu’s potential counterattack.
Qin Changxin shot a volley of ice needles as well, slightly misaligned to avoid canceling each other.
The fire and ice needles penetrated Yang Hengyu’s protective aura, proving Qin Changxin’s refined control of spirit energy in her first real battle. Lin Yanyu gave her a thumbs-up.
But such small attacks couldn’t truly harm Yang Hengyu. Lin Yanyu felt the aura’s strength and shivered, recalling the agony of demonic fire from her previous life.
Acting on instinct, she swung the Floating Axe, breaking the egg-shell-like aura.
Qin Changxin called out from behind, but Yang Hengyu opened her eyes, raising a jade flute to her lips. The demonic melody prevented Lin Yanyu from responding.
Simultaneously, Feng Xianchen played the flute to counter her melody.
Their eyes met, and Lin Yanyu noticed Yang Hengyu’s eyes had turned blood red a sign of Xiao Xianyi’s possession.
“So it’s you, A-Qing,” Yang Hengyu said softly, a hint of joy in her voice. “You didn’t obey that woman and came to the human world to find me.”
Lin Yanyu snapped, “No need for big eyes! My mother suffered because of you! I’m here to kill you!”
Yang Hengyu froze, and in that instant, Lin Yanyu struck. The Floating Axe shattered the protective aura, aiming for her vital point.
Yet Yang Hengyu vanished ten steps away.
Lin Yanyu quickly retreated behind Qin Changxin, holding the axe in one hand and shielding her with the other.
Yang Hengyu looked at her arm, surprised by the blood on her palm.
“So, you’re her daughter…” she murmured, astonishment turning to terror impossible! How are you alive? How can you stand with her? You
“Clang!”
“Ping clang!”
Three spirit energy swords pierced the aura near her back with a strange sound.
“Enough chatter!” Qin Changxin shouted, controlling the three spirit swords with her newly learned spirit mastery, continuing the attack.
