- Chapter 38 - A Sudden Wing
The words left Lin Yanyu’s mouth, and she felt inexplicably like someone who had been through it all.
Well, actually, she was a 23 year-old single woman, relying only on reading yuri novels to “learn” idealized romance techniques from the future.
However, Qin Changxin sighed in relief, leaned in to her cat ear, and gently bit it. The sensation was cool and soft, and so comfortable that she couldn’t help but nibble again.
Lin Yanyu shuddered and almost lost control of the spiritual energy in her paws. Her body tilted, and she muttered with resentment, “Can we wait until we’re ashore to play with ears?”
When Qin Changxin pulled away her mouth, Lin Yanyu asked, “Don’t tell me you don’t know that ears and tails are sensitive spots for demons.”
“I know,” Qin Changxin smiled, sounding a bit smug. “I did it on purpose.”
Lin Yanyu: “…”
Where did her cold, pure little girl go? How did she turn into such a natural-born troublemaker?!
Their priority was getting to the island, so Lin Yanyu didn’t dare speak further. She sped up, heading toward the bird-winged island.
Another half hour later, she stopped outside a patch of white mist. Recalling how Qin Changxin and her group had entered the island in the original story, she tried shooting a burst of demon fire, hoping it might evaporate the mist.
To her surprise, the white mist immediately changed color after being scorched by the demon fire, turning into a dark blue mist that quickly expanded. It was clearly something that shouldn’t be easily touched.
Lin Yanyu hurriedly retreated, her cat paw tapping the water’s surface as she hesitated, “This mist can’t be burned away with demon fire. Can you try using wind magic?”
Qin Changxin summoned the Wuyuan Fan, reciting a long incantation before waving it toward the blue mist. The mist gradually drifted backward, being cut and dispersed by wind blades, its color slowly fading.
“…It seems it can’t be completely dispersed.” Qin Changxin closed the fan, frowning. “But this concentration of poisonous mist shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll create a protective barrier for you. You should be able to pass through quickly.”
Lin Yanyu nodded. Once Qin Changxin formed the barrier around her, she shot forward like an arrow, breaking through the toxic mist. After a brief moment, her cat paws touched the soil, and she slowed down. Soon, she successfully passed through the mist and reached the island.
Qin Changxin dismounted from the cat’s back, tightly gripping the Wuyuan Fan, her eyes alert as she scanned the surroundings. Ever since their battle with the bird demon that night, she had been extra cautious, afraid of being caught off guard and getting hurt.
“Can you sense the contact person from your academy?” Lin Yanyu asked, transforming into human form.
Qin Changxin summoned the identity badge of the Kui Xuan Academy exorcist, infused it with spiritual energy, and chanted a long spell. The energy from the badge released, turning into a purple light dot that flew toward a particular direction.
“It even has an automatic navigation feature?” Lin Yanyu asked, following her, fascinated by the badge in her hand.
The purple light dot stuck to the island’s edge, and after a short time, Lin Yanyu spotted a towering, cloud-piercing glass building, the blue glass reflecting the bright sunlight.
However, once she saw that the building looked like a futuristic skyscraper, Lin Yanyu knew at once that it was an illusion.
She instinctively looked at Qin Changxin, who, to her surprise, was wearing a shirt and a small skirt, carrying a canvas bag, smiling sweetly and reaching out as if to embrace her.
Lin Yanyu immediately took out a prepared talisman, drew a symbol with blood as ink, and quickly chanted a spell to break the illusion. Demon fire burned the illusion, causing the skyscraper to twist and soon reveal its true form.
It was a water-side building, with the first floor suspended in mid-air. The second floor and above were the main structure, with columns inscribed with the words “Kui Xuan Academy” and cloud-patterned decorations.
Lin Yanyu didn’t rush to move forward. Instead, she turned to Qin Changxin. Seeing that her gaze was dazed, seemingly still trapped in the illusion, Lin Yanyu quickly raised her hand, gently tapping her forehead.
Qin Changxin shivered, her eyes slowly clearing. When their gazes met, her face turned bright red.
“I saw you in the illusion.” Before Lin Yanyu could ask, Qin Changxin admitted, “This must be an illusion that materializes inner obsessions.”
Lin Yanyu silently nodded. She never expected that after all this time, her obsession still lay in her home in the future.
Even though life as an exorcist was so harsh, subconsciously, she had been thinking of going back, and even bringing Qin Changxin with her.
But in her previous life, she had died in a demon attack. Her body had been burned to ashes by demon fire, and even if the Divine Healer were alive, she couldn’t have been saved.
Putting aside those unrealistic thoughts, Lin Yanyu asked, “Why’s your face so red? What did you see?”
Qin Changxin hesitated, not answering, but Lin Yanyu could roughly guess what it was. She chuckled and pinched her face, then took her hand and led her toward the building.
Fortunately, they arrived early, and the contact person from Kui Xuan Academy was still inside, calmly reading a book while sipping tea.
When she saw them, the purple-level exorcist froze, but upon noticing Qin Changxin’s identity badge, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Greetings, seniors. We’re here to investigate the Birdwing Island,” Qin Changxin began, moving forward to explain, “The bird demons attacked Ningzhou City and surrounding villages, and the demons we encountered are a never-before-seen mutated species…”
Qin Changxin proceeded to recount the details of the demon attack that night, and the contact person, after hearing her out, frowned in thought for a moment, then extended her hand, “I’m sorry, but Birdwing Island is a demon gathering place within Ningzhou’s territory. Exorcists from our academy can only intervene if they present relevant credentials.”
“Would it work if we just register as interveners?” Lin Yanyu asked.
“No.” The contact person replied firmly, “Unless it’s a descendant of Feng Funing or Zhuang Yingruo personally coming.”
Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin exchanged a glance. They now understood why Feng Xianchen had called them “living credentials.”
“The descendants of the two seniors are on their way. They should arrive in about a day.” Qin Changxin said. “My demon guard is fast, so we’ve arranged for them to check out the situation on the island first.”
The contact person was stunned to learn that Qin Changxin was traveling with the descendants of two silver-level exorcists. After a brief moment of shock, she thought for a moment, then led them to a quiet room in the building.
“This room is simple, with few amenities to entertain guests. You’ll have to rest here,” the contact person said, bringing in tea and a plate of green dumplings that didn’t look very appetizing. She then left, closing the door behind her.
Qin Changxin was about to take a sip of the tea, but Lin Yanyu stopped her and used a silver needle to test the tea for poison before agreeing to let her drink it.
“Better safe than sorry when we’re out here,” Lin Yanyu explained. “Some demon races are good at shapeshifting and disguising themselves. After concealing their demonic aura, it’s hard to tell whether they’re human or demon.”
After all her running and using demon fire, her throat had become parched, and the tea was warm, not scalding, and sweet. She ended up drinking more than two cups. When she put the cup down and reached for a green dumpling, she suddenly felt heat building in her back, followed by sharp pain. She hurriedly stopped Qin Changxin, “The tea is poisoned!”
Before she could finish, she collapsed and transformed into her demon form, her body convulsing.
“Lin Yanyu!” Qin Changxin was horrified, dropping her cup to rush over and hold the black cat, repeatedly calling her name.
Lin Yanyu, despite the agony in her back, remained conscious, turning her pained gaze to Qin Changxin and asking, “How much did you drink?”
She had seen Qin Changxin drink some tea earlier.
“Half a cup.” Qin Changxin answered.
“Are you feeling anything strange?” Lin Yanyu asked again.
“…Nothing,” Qin Changxin said after checking her condition. “I feel fine.”
Knowing that Qin Changxin was okay, Lin Yanyu felt some relief, but a suspicion began to form in her mind.
“This tea was only consumed by the contact person, so the poison is likely only effective against demon races.” Lin Yanyu murmured, feeling the burning pain intensify in her back. She quickly tried to peel back Qin Changxin’s sleeve, “My back hurts so much! Please… check if something’s growing on me!”
She recalled that in the original story, the mutation of the bird demons on Birdwing Island was caused by water pollution, with someone poisoning the waters. However, the poison only affected demons, and the human defenders wouldn’t notice until it was too late.
Lin Yanyu knew the culprit from the final chapters: it was the demon king who had once been the ruler of the demon realm but betrayed it, still missing after eighteen years Xiao Xianyi, known as the “Blood Leopard” by the exorcists.
Qin Changxin turned Lin Yanyu’s demon form around and, sure enough, saw a wriggling lump on her back. She couldn’t help but gasp, hurriedly chanting an incantation, preparing to stop its growth. But then, there was a “pop,” and a pair of blue-and-red wings sprouted from the lump, wetly unfurling.
Feeling something growing on her back, Lin Yanyu gritted her teeth and asked, “What do you see?”
“A wing.” Qin Changxin, still in shock, replied. “Just one, and it’s blue and red, like the biwing bird from the ancient texts.”
“Cut it off!” Lin Yanyu said decisively. “Otherwise, it’ll erode my mind and harm you! Hurry!”
Despite knowing that cutting off the mutation would cause significant damage to her body, she didn’t want to risk trying to refine the mutation.
Qin Changxin immediately summoned the Wuyuan Fan, aiming it at the base of the wing and preparing to strike. Suddenly, a killing intent filled the air, and before she knew it, a small axe appeared before her eyes, cutting the wing in one swift motion.
The wing remained, but it no longer reacted. It seemed to be tamed, and the small axe disappeared into Lin Yanyu’s body.
“What just happened?” Lin Yanyu, now feeling no more pain, noticed that the wing didn’t drain her demon energy anymore.
“Your axe appeared and cut it,” Qin Changxin explained, reaching out to touch the blue red wing. “It’s quiet now.”
Lin Yanyu was surprised she hadn’t expected her floating axe to leave her body to solve the crisis.
But compared to this “killing weapon,” the malice from the mutation wasn’t nearly as potent. The floating axe likely absorbed all the hostility when it cut.
“Perhaps the floating axe was just hungry and needed to consume the malice and killing intent.” Lin Yanyu joked lightly, steadying herself and trying to control the wing. It moved as she willed, slowly unfurling.
Qin Changxin stared at her, watching her repeatedly unfold and retract the wing.
“I wonder if the wing can fly,” Lin Yanyu muttered to herself before trying to stand up. However, due to the new wing, she had a bit of trouble balancing.
Qin Changxin, seeing her wobble, transformed into human form as well. The wing, still attached to Lin Yanyu, was now clearly visible, and it was quite large, sticking out of her back and poking through her clothes in an imposing way.
