- Chapter 22 - Midnight Heart to Heart Talk
Tan Changxin fell silent.
She had stayed at the Kui Xuan Academy for ten years, and most of what she had learned about life centered around “purity and self-restraint.” Even though her roommates, Sister Feng Xianchen and Senior Sister Zhuang, were a couple, they had never gone beyond holding hands or occasional hugs.
So, when someone no, a demon offered to explain things to her, she wasn’t even sure what it was she wanted to know.
Seeing her not speak, Lin Yanyu only felt her cheeks burn even more. She began to regret bringing up the topic and couldn’t help but turn over and say, “If you’re too embarrassed to ask, then I’m going to sleep!”
“Wait!” Tan Changxin quickly grabbed her hand. After a moment of hesitation, she softly asked, “Is it true that demons are… highly lustful?”
This question came as a relief to Lin Yanyu. She turned around and explained, “It depends on the race and the individual demon. Some races go into heat and get really uncomfortable if they don’t, well, do it, but demons with high cultivation can restrain those urges. Honestly, it’s not that different from humans.”
She paused, then added, “But, our kind is very possessive. Once we claim something a territory, an object, or even another demon we like to leave our scent on it, kind of like a declaration of ownership. I don’t know if that counts as what you meant by ‘highly lustful.’”
Tan Changxin thought for a moment and shook her head. “No, I don’t think that counts. ‘Lustful’ focuses more on physical desire.”
She looked at Lin Yanyu with hesitant curiosity. “Then, since you can restrain those impulses, why do you keep so many of those… picture books in your bedroom?”
Lin Yanyu: “…”
The mess the original host left behind really came back to bite her.
So she pretended to be an innocent little kitty, folded down her cat ears, pulled the blanket up to cover half her face, and pouted. “I didn’t know humans thought those were evil or indecent! I just heard lots of demons liked reading them… Some younger demons even tried to sneak them…”
Tan Changxin didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Seeing Lin Yanyu’s big green eyes looking at her with a blushing face, she reached out to gently rub her cat ears and smiled. “Now that you know, why not give it up? If you like reading, I can find you some other books. It’ll help pass the time.”
Lin Yanyu obediently nodded, then snuggled deeper into the covers and asked, “If you don’t have any more questions, then… good night?”
Seeing the pure smile on the girl’s face made her stumble over her words. Lin Yanyu turned over and closed her eyes, but in her heart, she couldn’t help but complain to herself: Lin Yanyu, you’re a 23 year-old grown cat woman why are you teasing a naïve girl like this?!
Sleeping was actually just an excuse to avoid more awkward conversation. Lin Yanyu closed her eyes and began using her spiritual technique to slowly lay down threads of spiritual energy throughout the room and its surroundings.
In her past life, whenever she was on field missions, she’d always set up these energy threads around her camp to prevent sneak attacks while resting. Last night, since she was technically in her own home (the original host’s), she hadn’t bothered.
After finishing the setup, Lin Yanyu finally closed her eyes to organize the memories left behind by the original host.
Their values and educational backgrounds were worlds apart. Even though she had fused with the original’s memories, she still couldn’t help but revert to her own habits while doing things. If she wanted to truly adapt to this world, she’d need to spend time syncing with those memories.
Around midnight, Lin Yanyu was awakened by soft sobbing. She turned over and saw Tan Changxin curled up again, quietly whimpering the same phrases over and over: “Sister, don’t hit me… Changxin was wrong…”
Last night, Lin Yanyu hadn’t woken the girl she had simply turned into a cat and nestled into her arms, letting her hug her until she gradually escaped the nightmare. Tonight, however, she chose to wake her and get to the bottom of things.
Facing the girl’s tearful, confused eyes, Lin Yanyu said calmly, “Your heart demon is serious. If you don’t deal with it soon, it could affect your health.”
In her past life, Lin Yanyu had seen many colleagues who suffered psychological trauma. The bloodshed and constant danger of demon-hunting missions left deep mental scars. Some exorcists had to retire early and undergo long-term psychological therapy in recovery centers.
Although Tan Changxin’s situation wasn’t as bad, mental health was never something to ignore. Lin Yanyu had no intention of following the original plot, where the heroine descended into darkness and turned cruel and cold-hearted.
Tan Changxin froze, then quickly wiped away her tears and forced a smile. “It’s nothing… just a bad dream…”
“‘Sister, don’t hit me’, ‘Changxin was wrong’ you said the exact same things last night,” Lin Yanyu interrupted. “Last night, you’d just been brought to the demon realm and were understandably frightened. Today, you were poisoned by Yang Hengyu and still had a nightmare. Even if the reasons differ, having nightmares this often is not good.”
“It’s not frequent,” Tan Changxin insisted, shaking her head again. “Back at Kui Xuan Academy, I always slept well.”
“Did you burn incense or use a sleep-assisting array?” Lin Yanyu asked.
Tan Changxin thought for a moment. “Senior Sister Zhuang would sometimes burn calming incense she made herself. But even without it, I didn’t really have nightmares.”
“Then it’s an environmental issue,” Lin Yanyu concluded. “You don’t adapt well to new surroundings, and this home doesn’t give you any sense of safety… Do your parents know about this?”
Tan Changxin lowered her gaze and stayed silent for a long time before quietly replying, “My mother had a breakdown a few years ago. Every time she sees me, she relapses and becomes incoherent. My father… if he knew I had nightmares about fearing my sister, he’d surely scold me.”
Lin Yanyu couldn’t help but look at her sympathetically but she knew that pity wasn’t respectful at this moment. She quickly masked the expression, scooted closer, and pulled the girl blanket and all into her arms.
Tan Changxin’s eyes widened, shrinking into the covers and asking hurriedly, “W-What are you doing…?”
Their breathing was now very close. Tan Changxin faintly smelled something strange an unusual scent, similar to the soul locking incense her senior sister had once tried. It was used to keep a soul anchored to its body.
She couldn’t help but wonder, This cat demon is young, her heartbeat strong, breath steady clearly very healthy. So why does she smell like someone near death using soul-locking incense?
“You said earlier we’re companions, right?” Lin Yanyu said seriously. “If you trust me, you can talk to me don’t bottle everything up inside.”
She thought for a moment, then added, “If you think cuddling a cat is more helpful than talking, I can turn into my cat form for you to hug.”
“Hug a cat?” Tan Changxin was confused.
“It means… holding me in my cat form, rubbing my face, stroking my fur, playing with my ears and tail,” Lin Yanyu explained. “Whatever works for you, I’m fine with either.”
“T-That’s kind of embarrassing…” Tan Changxin’s face turned red again, but her gaze quietly shifted to Lin Yanyu’s fluffy black cat ears.
“Actually, that’s what worked last night,” Lin Yanyu admitted. “You hugged me and mumbled ‘kitty,’ then fell asleep not long after.”
She could’ve kept that to herself but now that she said it, Tan Changxin immediately pulled the blanket over her face and then over her head, curling into a ball to hide in shame.
Lin Yanyu sighed and tugged the blanket away to drag the girl out.
“You’re an exorcist, aren’t you?!” she said seriously. “In those storybooks, exorcists have to go on missions all the time! If you can’t sleep in unfamiliar places, it’ll affect your sleep quality, which in turn affects your alertness and mission performance…”
In her past life, she had been the team leader of a demon hunting squad, often guiding new recruits. Whenever a teammate had erratic sleep habits, she couldn’t help but nag a bit. Now, faced with the closed off Tan Changxin, that old habit returned full force.
She nagged for a good while about how poor sleep would lead to serious consequences then finally sighed and stopped.
Throughout the lecture, Tan Changxin had listened attentively. When Lin Yanyu looked up again, she was surprised to see admiration shining in the girl’s eyes.
She grew flustered under the gaze, looked away, and coughed. “What’s with that look? Are you saying I’m wrong?”
“No, not at all!” Tan Changxin quickly waved her hands, lips curling into an uncontainable smile. “You’re absolutely right. I was listening carefully.”
Lin Yanyu: “?”
“Then go back to sleep. We have to get up early tomorrow, and there’s not much night left,” Lin Yanyu said, lovingly patting her head. “Be good. With this young mistress here, you can sleep in peace tonight.”
