- Chapter 18 - Huge Contrast
Lin Yanyu always felt that the reason Tan Changxin blushed easily was because she was thin-skinned, but when the other party actually used “thin skinned” as an explanation for her blushing, her intuition made her immediately abandon this guess.
She still remembered that she had transmigrated into a yuri novel, and Xuan Lin, the young master of the Demon Realm she was currently inhabiting, was the official pairing with Tan Changxin.
Given how awful the original owner’s actions were, and yet Tan Changxin could still fall for her, if the exterior remained unchanged, but was replaced with a soul that occasionally took care of her… this little girl’s emotional progress might even speed up a bit.
However, their time together was still too short, and Lin Yanyu truly couldn’t judge. After teasing Tan Changxin enough, she was satisfied and withdrew her hand, sitting down next to her.
“Your skin really is quite thin. I’m not a man, you know,” Lin Yanyu chuckled. “If you’re not used to physical contact between the same sex, I suggest you look at the picture books I gave you more often. Otherwise, if you get hurt out of my sight later, who will rub your back for you?”
Tan Changxin put on her clothes, turned her face away, and quietly answered with a low hum.
Lin Yanyu didn’t try to see if she was still blushing. She looked around and saw that the little girl’s bedroom was basically bare. The furniture consisted only of a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe. The desk was even covered in dust, completely lacking any signs of daily life, which made her frown.
“Feng Xianchen said you would go back after the family ceremony. Actually, that Kui Xuan Academy is your real home, right?” Lin Yanyu asked. Seeing Tan Changxin nod silently, she continued, “I want to go back with you. Is there a place for me to stay?”
“Yes,” Tan Changxin answered without hesitation. “But… you can’t refer to yourself as ‘this young master’ anymore.”
“I naturally know that,” Lin Yanyu originally maintained the original owner’s persona to prevent being discovered by fellow demon clansmen. Now that she was no longer in the Demon Realm, there was no point in keeping up the act.
In the afternoon, Tan Changxin took Lin Yanyu and Feng Xianchen to scope out the arena.
Scoping out the location was Lin Yanyu’s idea. Tan Changxin wouldn’t normally do such a thing, but after being ambushed by Yang Hengyu right after coming home today, she would naturally no longer naively think her sister just wanted to bully her; she had to be vigilant.
As for Feng Xianchen, she volunteered to follow them, whispering to Tan Changxin along the way, “I really find it strange. Didn’t you tell your father a long time ago that you weren’t interested in the family head position, and you just wanted to stay at Kui Xuan Academy to teach and exterminate demons? Why is that woman still relentlessly pursuing you?”
Tan Changxin thought for a moment and said with some hesitation, “Human hearts are unpredictable?”
“It’s always good to be cautious,” Lin Yanyu interjected lazily. “If that woman were a normal older sister, she wouldn’t have bullied you for so long.”
“Exactly! And Sister Changxin never provoked her. Sister Changxin has always given in and avoided her since childhood!” Feng Xianchen continued to whisper, intentionally glancing at Lin Yanyu as she spoke.
Lin Yanyu felt her gaze but didn’t want to respond. Tan Changxin just smiled upon hearing the comment and did not comment on her own older sister.
The three walked through Yingxiang Street, heading straight for the East Arena.
Public arenas were usually where demon exterminators held their duels, so a Purple Tanshi rank demon exterminator was always seated in the small wooden house by the arena. They were responsible for registering the information of the dueling parties, setting up a protective barrier during the match to avoid affecting the surrounding shops, and intervening promptly to prevent casualties.
The keeper of the East Arena on Yingxiang Street was named Ling Cang. He had guarded the arena for seven years. When Lin Yanyu and her companions arrived, he was slowly sweeping the arena with a broom, head still lowered.
Before Tan Changxin could explain their purpose, Ling Cang said without looking up, “Yang Hengyu just left. She’s borrowing my arena to duel you tonight. What are you two sisters up to now?”
“Sigh, Sister Changxin and that woman are not sisters at all!” Feng Xianchen complained. “What kind of sister treats her own flesh and blood sister so ruthlessly!”
“Feng Xianchen.” Tan Changxin sighed. After glaring at Feng Xianchen, she bowed to Ling Cang and asked, “Excuse me, Senior, may we walk around the arena?”
“Be my guest.” Ling Cang stepped aside. He loosened his grip, and the broom was lifted by spiritual energy, floating beside him, following him as he leisurely drifted to the other side.
“That’s the ‘Spirit Manipulation Technique’,” Tan Changxin explained, seeing Lin Yanyu looking at Ling Cang in surprise. “Only a small number of Purple Tanshi rank demon exterminators can perform it. It’s an extremely high-level spell.”
Lin Yanyu nodded. She just hadn’t expected that the “Spirit Guiding Technique” she had devised was actually a high-level spell in this world.
Just as she was thinking this, she heard Feng Xianchen say, “Sister Changxin, actually, Sister Lin can do this too.”
Feng Xianchen’s voice was very soft, as if she deliberately lowered it to prevent her from hearing, but Lin Yanyu had sharp ears. After hearing it, she interjected, “What did you say I can do?”
Feng Xianchen immediately shut up, shrinking timidly behind Tan Changxin, glancing in the direction Ling Cang had walked away, and stammered, “It’s… the Spirit Manipulation Technique…”
“Making a mountain out of a molehill. Is it not allowed if my mother taught me?” Lin Yanyu had no choice but to lie, while also giving a confident smile like “my father taught me in Hawaii.”
Tan Changxin and Feng Xianchen exchanged glances. The latter’s eyes suddenly lit up, and she nodded vigorously, “That’s right! It must be that my mother taught your mother the ‘Spirit Manipulation Technique’ back then, and then your mother was able to teach you!”
Lin Yanyu curved her lips, not denying it, letting them make up whatever they wanted. She stepped back a distance, reached out toward the distant weapon rack, and abruptly opened her palm.
She could actually perform the “Spirit Manipulation Technique” without moving her hands, but performing the spell for demonstration required some gestures to look more impressive.
A large axe left the weapon rack on its own and flew towards Lin Yanyu. When Lin Yanyu beckoned it, the axe’s speed slowed down. The axe head pointed downwards, and the handle gently rested in her palm.
Lin Yanyu casually lifted the large axe and started chopping, slashing, and spinning it on the spot, creating a gust of wind. About a minute later, with a clang, she slammed the axe head onto the ground. She leaned on the upturned axe handle with one hand, put the other on her hip, and tilted her head, asking the two people who were stunned, “How’s that?”
The original owner was naturally cute and endearing, and slightly short. Dressed in a red outfit with white velvet trim from the Human Realm, and with her hair tied up with a red string, she looked even more charming.
Yet, this charming little cat demon girl was now standing by the large axe with a commanding presence. Passersby were stunned and couldn’t help but stop and watch.
“I remember this axe is quite heavy,” the recovered Feng Xianchen sincerely admired. “Even my uncle might not be able to lift it!”
Tan Changxin walked forward and, at Lin Yanyu’s gaze, gripped the axe handle, trying to lift it.
When she exerted all her strength, and the large axe didn’t budge, a flash of surprise crossed her eyes.
