- Chapter 42.1 - Who Can Outsmart Whom
“I won’t hold back either,” Ding Moyan replied, stroking her Mecha fighter with a raised brow.
As her words faded, Ye Ye flashed a satisfied smile. This was bound to be an exhilarating battle. Fueled by excitement, she opened the Mecha’s hatch and climbed inside.
Ding Moyan found the button and settled into the cramped, oval interior like a Capsule.
Though the exterior was blue, the interior was dominated by gray tones, dimly lit. Pressing the red switch, three blue screens appeared before her: the central one served as the main display for vision, while the side panels handled attribute adjustments and function switches.
Ding Moyan leisurely skimmed the manual, grasping the basics operating it wasn’t much different from driving or pulling a lever.
Her hands rested on the control panel as she tapped a few buttons and yanked the levers on both sides. The sudden shudder of the Mecha was impossible to ignore. Following the onboard instructions, she slowly maneuvered the machine to the left.
The Mecha moved sluggishly, like a newborn child taking its first unsteady steps.
Only when she could clearly sense the controls and her surroundings did Ding Moyan consider switching to defensive mode. Raising her right hand, she selected green on the left panel, then input a string of seemingly random formulas from the Mecha’s function guide at the bottom of the main screen.
[——Defense Mode Activated——]
[Current Mecha Defense Mode has reached a full score of 100. Agility reduced by 20%, Attack Power reduced by 20%, Recovery Speed reduced by 20%.]
[Host, why are you using Defense Mode?]
Ding Moyan: I don’t know how to handle this, so of course I’m choosing defense. Even if Ye Ye beats me up, I won’t go down immediately. Let me figure things out first, we’ll talk later if needed.
The blue Mecha ahead wobbled comically. Ye Ye stared at her panel, rubbing her chin, her expression shifting between amusement and irritation.
Is Ding Moyan mocking me with this move?
Ye Ye habitually gnawed at the inside of her cheek before deciding to strike first. Her fingers pressed the activation button, and long spikes emerged from the Mecha’s head as it lunged toward Ding Moyan.
Ding Moyan’s gaze sharpened. With a swift sidestep, she narrowly dodged the attack.
She then pulled the lever for the defensive discharge mechanism. The moment it activated, the Mecha released a surge of voltage, generating a powerful electromagnetic wave that rippled toward Ye Ye.
Unfazed, Ye Ye triggered her Mecha’s offensive gear, randomly selecting an attack attribute. Her machine transformed into a small, towering giant, its arms ablaze with blue flames. Anything touched by these flames would burn relentlessly, no amount of water could extinguish them.
Ding Moyan maneuvered her Mecha into motion. After a few practice runs, she shifted to second gear, increasing its speed.
Ye Ye seemed to anticipate Ding Moyan’s evasion. She yanked the right lever, swerving sharply, only for Ding Moyan to accidentally press a button that miraculously dodged the second attack.
The button was labeled Golden Cicada Sheds Its Shell. The Mecha split into three layers, its outer shell bursting apart while the remaining two layers allowed Ding Moyan to slip behind Ye Ye.
Boom!
This move of using the opponent’s strength against them was executed so brilliantly that it made Ye Ye raise her eyebrows in pleasant surprise. A smile curled at the corners of her lips as she extended the attack handle. “Then I won’t hold back.”
“Don’t hold back.” Ding Moyan gripped the control handle with ease, surprised by her own natural talent.
The only uncertainty was how long she could last. It was perfect to use Ye Ye as a test subject, a free trial, too good to waste.
“Watch out, I’m going all out.”
A fiery iron fist, blazing with high temperatures, shot straight toward Ding Moyan’s face.
Her eyes narrowed, the blue flames enveloping the fist reflected in her dark pupils. She could clearly feel the scorching heat closing in.
Sizzle.
Molten lava dripped from the fist onto the snow-white mecha, the flames piercing through the entire cockpit.
A flash of white light erupted from the side wall, and a limping man was ejected from it.
Sweating and terrified, the male Alpha clutched the black collar around his neck, gasping for breath, silently relieved.
The Engineering Institute would never allow students to kill each other. In life-threatening situations, weaker participants would automatically vanish from their mechas and reappear on the white-light wall. The black collar around their necks served as the medium every player was required to wear one as a precaution.
“Game over. Student Ye Ye wins and advances to the second round of practical combat.”
“Tch, what a joke.” The flames on Ye Ye’s mecha extinguished as the announcement rang out.
The petite figure leaped down from the mecha, landing gracefully.
“A B-rank Alpha? That’s it?” Ye Ye glanced disdainfully at the man who had challenged her earlier.
Five minutes ago,
“So you’re my opponent.” The man chuckled, dragging out his words. “An Omega.”
His gaze swept over the delicate figure, the kind he could knock down with a single punch. His face twisted in contempt. “A pink mecha typical for a little Omega. You people love this kind of color.”
“Just surrender.”
Ye Ye looked at him with disgust, covering her mouth as she smiled. “Oh, brother, you’re so full of yourself, aren’t you?”
“Tch, don’t push your luck.” The man crossed his arms, smirking slightly.
From his upbringing, Omegas existed solely for Alphas. In his eyes, their only purpose was to be breeding machines. He couldn’t understand why the Engineering Institute even accepted Omegas.
“Omegas should just stay at home obediently and be good little breeding machines.”
The moment those words left his mouth, the Omegas in the audience widened their eyes in outrage.
“Is this guy insane?”
“Not just insane, but a complete idiot!”
One Omega beside them burst into tears, wiping his eyes angrily. “We’re not breeding machines! You Alphas are the real monsters!”
In the backstage lounge, Ding Moyan pressed her lips into a thin line, her gaze shifting to the Alpha on the large screen.
Her index finger tapped rhythmically against the wooden armrest of the sofa. “What’s his mental strength like?”
Mecha combat relied on mental energy, those with higher gland levels held a distinct advantage in battle.
[B-rank Alpha. High pheromone concentration. Strong mental energy. Threat level: three stars.]
Ding Moyan asked again, “Ye Ye is an A-rank omega. How confident are you in dealing with a B-rank alpha? Can she handle it?”
[Theoretically, it’s possible. However, omegas have fragile physiques, and prolonged combat might be difficult to sustain.]
Ding Moyan: “After the match, report his activity location to me.”
[Host, why are you asking this?]
“That guy has serious issues, he needs to be taught a lesson.” Ding Moyan’s expression darkened. The man’s earlier remarks had provoked her intense displeasure, reminding her of the outdated, misogynistic notions from her own world, how men were rational and bold, their mistakes excusable, while women existed solely for reproduction. Some professions, fields, or companies even excluded women outright. It was utterly disgusting.
The man showed no sign of shutting up despite the outcry from many omegas in the audience. On the contrary, his words seemed deliberately aimed at those “ignorant” omegas.
“Little girl, you’re quite pretty, and your family background isn’t bad. I’m a B-rank alpha. If you withdraw from the competition, I might consider proposing to your family.” The man rested his finger on his chin, his gaze sweeping over Ye Ye’s petite, curvaceous figure and delicate, soft features exactly his preferred type of omega.
“Where does he get the audacity?!” Yu Sisi, seated in the third row on the right, fumed.
Ding Bai, who had come to cheer for Ye Ye, looked as dark as a storm cloud. The glow stick in her hand shattered under her grip, its electricity fizzling out.
Ding Bai was an omega. From the day she was born, her omega father had despised her gender.
If gender wasn’t enough, she’d make up for it with diligence and talent.
That was how her family had evaluated her efforts over the years.
Politely put, she was hardworking and gifted. More bluntly, she only had these common traits things any member of the Ding family could achieve.
Now, in the center of the arena, some insignificant B-rank alpha was trampling all over her pride.
“Which family is he from?” Ding Bai’s voice was low, her pitch-black pupils fixed on the man.
“A minor branch of the Zou family not very prominent, just a nobody.” Yu Sisi paused, then added as a reminder, “But there’s one thing to note: Zou Ye, the eldest daughter of the Zou family, is also at this Engineering Institute. She’s from the same clan as this B-rank alpha.”
“Just yesterday or the day before, she apparently clashed with the President.”
“Zou Ye.” Ding Bai had heard the name but didn’t know much about her.
Yu Sisi said, “After Ye Ye’s match, the next one is between Zou Ye and Ding Moyan.”
“Those two…”
“Both are powerhouses. Rumor has it they have a feud over a ‘wife’, Jiang Pei, that delicate boy who’s always hanging around Ding Moyan.”
Ding Bai rubbed the jade bracelet on her wrist, deep in thought. After a moment, she gestured for Yu Sisi to lean in and listened to her whispered instructions.
The countdown on the large screen began.
The omega before him had only 60 seconds to decide.
The man’s tone was arrogant. “So, what’s your answer?”
He tilted his chin up, towering over Ye Ye with his height and bulk, as if his words were some grand favor.
