- Chapter 34 - The President's New Favorite
The day passed even faster than yesterday. After sleeping in until the afternoon and attending half a class, Ding Moyan returned to the dormitory. Of course, if not for a few minor incidents, she would have been completely relaxed.
The Engineering Institute didn’t assign any homework today, so Ding Moyan lazily scrolled through videos in bed.
By around seven in the evening, Ding Moyan’s stomach growled loudly, two or three times enough for Wang Ye, who was solving problems on the opposite bunk, to hear.
Wang Ye turned around and glanced up at the upper bunk.
Ding Moyan buried her face in the pillow, embarrassed.
Wang Ye chuckled softly at the sight.
“Mo Yan, what should we eat later?”
This was the crucial question: What were they going to eat tonight?
When the question was thrown at Ding Moyan, she hesitated.
Should they eat at the cafeteria, go out, or just have instant noodles?
What should they have for dinner tonight?
Ding Moyan remembered that the original owner of her body had a small electric pot. She rummaged through the cabinet and found it.
“How about we make a hotpot?”
Ding Moyan craved hotpot. She used to be hospitalized often, and the food she could eat was limited no fried, spicy, or heavy flavors. In short, she could only have bland meals.
Now that she had crossed over, she was determined to do all the things she couldn’t before, making up for years of longing.
“S-sure.” Wang Ye nodded. She wasn’t picky, she treated all food equally. Since Ding Moyan wanted this, Wang Ye naturally paid extra attention and volunteered for the task. “I-I’ll g-go to the s-supermarket outside to b-buy vegetables and meatballs.”
The school supermarket was expensive, and the staff had terrible attitudes, so few people shopped there. About 80% of students went to the larger supermarket off-campus instead.
“Then I’ll clean the pot,” Ding Moyan said, holding the small electric pot.
Wang Ye grabbed her wallet and opened the door. “I-I’ll g-go now.”
“Okay, be careful.”
At the off-campus supermarket,
Ye Ye loaded her cart with a large bag of chocolates, chips, and even a few packs of cigarettes meant as offerings.
“Why are you buying so much? Can you even finish it?” Yu Sisi couldn’t help but frown at Ye Ye’s chocolate hoarding, which made her look like she was starving.
“I can finish it.” Ye Ye stuffed the items into the cart. “It’s not like you don’t sneak some every time.”
Yu Sisi scoffed and was about to retort when her gaze accidentally landed on someone behind Ye Ye.
Her expression changed. She pulled Ye Ye behind a shelf and pointed discreetly at Wang Ye, who was picking vegetables. “Ye Ye, look over there.”
Ye Ye frowned. “Wang Ye.”
Yu Sisi was puzzled. “Yeah. Why is Wang Ye buying raw food from the chilled section? How is she going to eat it without a pot to cook it in?”
All raw ingredients… Ye Ye’s eyes gleamed. She hummed thoughtfully, crunching the lollipop in her mouth. “Sisi, your Forbidden Items Department hasn’t inspected the dorms in a while, has it?”
“We haven’t been checking much lately. It’s just too much trouble. Why?” Yu Sisi stared at Wang Ye, who was now holding a pile of vegetables. At first, she didn’t understand, but then it clicked, and she smacked her forehead.
Yu Sisi patted Ye Ye’s shoulder, barely suppressing a grin. “You’re something else, Ye Ye.”
“She’s in trouble now.”
“No no no, she’s not the only one who’s going to suffer.” Ye Ye’s mind flashed with the image of a certain stunning figure. She licked her lower lip and let out an eerie chuckle.
“I bought… quite a lot.” Wang Ye came over carrying numerous bags, having purchased several portions of every ingredient she could think of.
Ding Moyan glanced at the spread of ingredients on the table, there was a wide variety, and Wang Ye had even remembered to get all the sauces.
Doing a quick calculation, Ding Moyan realized there was enough food here for four or five people.
“This should work. If we can’t finish it, we can save the rest to cook tomorrow,” Ding Moyan said, pulling up Wang Ye’s contact to transfer money. “How much was all this?”
“No need, it wasn’t much,” Wang Ye shook her head, her pride making her reluctant to accept Ding Moyan’s money, especially since she’d freeloaded off Ding Moyan before.
“Ah, I should still pay you.” Knowing Wang Ye’s family situation, Ding Moyan estimated the cost of the groceries and transferred a rough amount to Wang Ye’s phone. “You’ve lent me your notes and even bought all this food to treat me, it’d be too shameless of me to just take it for free.”
Wang Ye nodded with a quiet “Mhm,” warmth flooding her chest as she recognized Ding Moyan’s words were meant to preserve her dignity.
“I’ll go wash the vegetables.” Wang Ye picked up the plastic basin piled with greens.
Ding Moyan gave an ‘OK’ sign. “Then I’ll handle the meat and meatballs.”
She took a small knife and made shallow cuts along the sides of the sausages shorter ones would cook faster.
As she worked, she couldn’t resist sneaking a few bites.
[If you keep eating, there won’t be any left.]
Ding Moyan held up three fingers. “Nonsense, I only had three small pieces.”
While Ding Moyan was still bantering playfully with the system, Wang Ye suddenly rushed back into the dorm, her hands still full of unwashed vegetables, panic written all over her face.
“M-Mo Yan, they’re inspecting the dorms!” Wang Ye stammered between breaths, her eyes wide with alarm.
Ding Moyan frowned. “Inspecting the dorms?”
“Y-yes. No idea why there wasn’t even a notice in the dorm group chat. They just showed up out of nowhere. Oh, hide the pot!” Wang Ye urged.
Ding Moyan immediately unplugged the small electric pot. “What happens if they find contraband?”
“D-deduction of credits, a major demerit, parents get called, and a school-wide announcement,” Wang Ye hurriedly stuffed vegetables and meatballs under a cushion. “It’s really serious.”
Normally, dorm inspectors wouldn’t dig through personal belongings, often turning a blind eye but there was always the risk of running into someone strict, like Committee Member Karina, who frequently joined the Forbidden Items Department for surprise checks.
Ding Moyan let out a quiet hiss, internally cursing the school’s ridiculous policies.
Knock, knock, knock. The sound at the door meant they were out of time.
The inspectors had already reached their dorm. Ding Moyan quickly threw a piece of clothing over the pot thankfully, they hadn’t added the hotpot base yet, or the smell alone would have given them away.
Knock, knock, knock. The rapping came again.
Ding Moyan went to open the door.
“Long time no see.” Ye Ye greeted her with a smile, then brushed past Ding Moyan without waiting for a response.
Ding Moyan’s expression darkened. Opening the door only to meet this jinx her gut told her this was no coincidence.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t be such a coincidence, just as they were washing vegetables and preparing to eat, the Forbidden Items Department came to search.
Ye Ye walked casually, as if she were the little mistress of this house.
Watching Ye Ye’s retreating figure, Ding Moyan messaged the system: What should I do?
[You shouldn’t be asking me. I don’t know either. But even if they find out, just take the punishment. After all, Host, you’ll only be here for three years at most.]
That made sense. There was no need for her to be intimidated by Ye Ye.
“Why does this place look so clean?” Ye Ye scrutinized Ding Moyan’s dormitory. “Any forbidden items? Like a small electric pot, mini fridge, or induction cooker?”
Wang Ye broke into a cold sweat, shaking her head. “N-no, nothing.”
“Really no forbidden items?” Ye Ye narrowed her eyes suspiciously, stroking her chin like a great detective as she examined the two, sending chills down Wang Ye’s spine.
Ye Ye’s smile deepened as she brushed past Wang Ye and lifted her mattress. “Look what I found.”
A pile of raw ingredients.
Then, her gaze fell on a bundle of clothes on Ding Moyan’s chair. She lifted them to reveal.
A small electric pot.
Ye Ye’s expression immediately turned stern. She rubbed her chin and looked at Ding Moyan. “What should we do, Sister Mo Yan?”
“Hiding a forbidden small electric pot…”
“This is going to be a bit tricky!”
Ding Moyan watched Ye Ye’s smug, chest-puffed expression, which practically screamed, Beg me, beg me!
“I beg you.” Ding Moyan didn’t care about punishment for herself, but Wang Ye couldn’t afford a record. A few words wouldn’t cost her anything. If Ye Ye wanted to hear it, she could say it as much as she liked.
The ease of her surrender caught Ye Ye off guard. She had expected to see Ding Moyan’s frustration and anger, giving her another chance to tease her.
Wang Ye’s eyes reddened, her lips trembling as she listened, her heart aching.
“I beg you,” Ding Moyan repeated. “Can you let me go now?”
Ye Ye cleared her throat and said, “Fine.” She found Ding Moyan’s indifference rather boring.
Her eyes then landed on the small electric pot, and a mischievous idea sparked. She pointed at Ding Moyan. “I’ll let you off, but you have to personally cook hotpot for me.”
“Fine.” Ding Moyan nodded, plugged in the pot, and added the hotpot base.
Ye Ye grinned. “And you have to feed me yourself.”
“Fine.” Ding Moyan clenched her chopsticks.
“Wang Ye can only watch.”
Wang Ye had paid for this, why should she just watch? Ding Moyan frowned. “You’re pushing it.”
“Am I? Sister Mo Yan, my little notebook doesn’t have your names written down yet.” Ye Ye tapped her notebook, laughing wickedly.
Ding Moyan: “…”
Whatever. She’d take Wang Ye out for hotpot later.
The hotpot-making began.
Yu Sisi was the first to enter and see. Her eyes widened in disbelief, how had Ye Ye gotten in? Before she could say much, Ye Ye dragged her in to join the feast.
As the saying goes, When you accept gifts, your hands are tied; when you eat others’ food, your words soften.
Yu Sisi couldn’t bring herself to mention punishment anymore. She picked up a cooked cabbage and teased Ye Ye, “You’re something else, breaking the rules you enforce.”
Ye Ye burst into laughter, revealing a row of pearly white teeth.
As they happily feasted together, danger loomed just around the corner.
The sound of a beeping access card echoed, followed by the turning of the doorknob.
The dormitory door was pushed open, and the occupants inside turned to look.
Upon seeing who entered, Ye Ye and Yu Sisi immediately fell silent, exchanging uneasy glances.
Ye Ye poked Yu Sisi and whispered, “Why is she here? I double-checked before the dorm inspection, I didn’t see her.”
Yu Sisi’s face darkened. “I don’t know either.”
Karina, the malicious supporting female character held a committee position in the Student Union.
An icon flashed again on the System Panel. Ding Moyan had been having too much fun these past couple of days, so at first, the name only felt vaguely familiar, as if she’d heard it somewhere before. But when the system’s full text appeared, Ding Moyan pressed her lips into a flat line.
This was the same person who had called her earlier.
Ye Ye, clutching a small bowl, awkwardly shoveled the last bite of food into her mouth before fishing a meatball from the pot and offering it with forced cheer. “Sister Karina, would you like a meatball?”
Karina’s expression was stormy. Her brows furrowed deeply as she clutched her notebook so tightly it warped slightly clear evidence of her fury.
Ye Ye flinched at Karina’s sudden shift in demeanor, gulping before hurriedly retracting the meatball.
A department head knowingly breaking the rules, this matter was beyond Karina’s jurisdiction. She strode out in her mid-heeled shoes, needing to make a call to the President.
Watching her retreating figure, Ye Ye swallowed hard and muttered, “We’re done for.”
Yu Sisi clutched her chest, inhaling sharply. She desperately needed an emergency heart pill, she was the one truly screwed here.
As the head of the Forbidden Items Department, she had been caught red-handed.
This wasn’t just a simple demerit or grade deduction anymore. If Karina had already informed the President, and the President got involved, she was as good as dead.
Yu Sisi had already imagined N different ways she could perish.
In a desperate bid to save herself, Yu Sisi her survival instincts in overdrive turned to Ding Moyan, the one with those rumors involving the President. She grabbed Ding Moyan’s hand and squeezed. “Save me! You have to put in a good word for me with the President!”
Ding Moyan awkwardly pulled her hand back. “I’m useless here.”
She was already trying to figure out how to sweet-talk her way out of trouble with the President.
“No, you’re amazing. You can do it!” Otherwise, that CP thread wouldn’t have stayed pinned for so long. Yu Sisi refused to believe the President felt nothing for Ding Moyan.
After finishing her call, Karina returned. She knocked on the dorm door, and when her gaze landed on Ding Moyan, her voice turned icy. “The President wants to see you all.”
“Now.”
Yu Sisi clasped her hands together in prayer, muttering, “Save me, save me…”
President’s Office, New Building
“So, work came knocking?” The girl lounging in the wooden chair looked up at the increasingly grim-faced President and sighed. “Tsk, who pissed off our dear President? Let me guess… Zong Mu? Karina? Or maybe your new CP darling.”
“Ying Shu.”
“Got it right!”
Ying Shu’s lips curled slightly as she sprawled across the sofa, her demeanor utterly careless. “Zong Jia, don’t look at me like that. I’m not your new CP darling, I can’t possibly be the one who angered you.”
