- Chapter 59 - Setting Sail
“First, we should welcome Zhang Jun’s release from prison,” Lan Xing clutched the wine bottle like a microphone, her cheeks flushed with excitement. “Then let’s welcome our new companions, Zhang Jun and Remus! Welcome aboard the Princess, Captain! Don’t you have something to say?”
Yu Ke crossed her arms, watching Lan Xing with an amused smile. “Of course I should say something, but our princess is so enthusiastic, how could I interrupt you?”
“Wow,” remarked the inquisitive Remus, “is this how you two usually are? Anything we should be aware of? Are there any restricted areas on the ship? It’d be terribly awkward if we accidentally walked in on you two doing something… private.”
“Don’t overthink it, Remus,” Yu Ke chuckled. “We usually lock the doors and windows, so there won’t be any awkward situations like that. There are no absolute restricted zones on the ship, but we’re all adults, respecting each other’s privacy is common sense. I doubt anyone would barge into others’ rooms uninvited. At least, during the hundred-plus days we’ve been sailing on the Princess, we’ve all gotten along quite harmoniously.”
“I… I’ve never traveled far from home,” Zhang Jun hesitated. “Sailing for over a hundred days on an interstellar route… how far from home would that be?”
Lan Xing comforted him, “Don’t be afraid, it’s alright. We’ll come across supply stations along the way and pass by many planets and nations. With us here, you’ll be fine.”
Though Zhang Jun stood at 1.8 meters tall, he was soft-hearted inside. A few words of comfort from Lan Xing lifted his spirits slightly, and he forced a smile. “I never thought I’d leave Datianxi so soon. At the very least… I should have waited until my father passed away and the situation stabilized…”
“Have you forgotten how they treated you? Zhang Jun, are you forgetting the pain once the wound has healed?” Yu Ke scolded coldly. “Getting involved with the All-free organization, even as the prime minister’s son, the people won’t let you off. They’re only exiling you now, making you leave Datianxi. Once the prime minister passes, do you know how they’ll persecute you then?”
Zhang Jun hung his head in sorrow. After a few days in prison, he had visibly withered, his cheeks hollowed and his appearance pitiful.
Lan Xing, feeling sorry for her dear friend, held Zhang Jun’s hand and said to Yu Ke, “Sis, let’s not talk about those things anymore. Zhang Jun has been sheltered since childhood and never left Datianxi. It’s only natural he’d feel reluctant leaving for the first time!”
Yu Ke laughed. “You’re several years younger than him, yet I’ve never seen you get so disheartened over trivial matters. Zhang Jun, remember, you’re not being exiled. You’re setting out to explore the stars and seas. You still have to find your goddess, don’t you?”
Mention of that goddess made Zhang Jun’s heart flutter anxiously. He finally broke into a genuine smile. “I suppose I’ve been acting rather unreasonable…”
Li Jian’an smeared cake on his face and grumbled, “This is utterly ridiculous! We’re about to embark on a grand voyage, shouldn’t we be singing joyfully and sharing drinks instead?”
Everyone laughed, and Remus said, “Actually, I’m quite curious, what exactly did you go through in prison? Did the guards ever mistreat you? Do Omegas have special rooms? Were you ever harassed by Alphas? I heard male and female Omegas aren’t separated…”
“Shut up!” Yu Ke, Lan Xing, and Li Jian’an shouted in unison, wishing they could sew Remus’ mouth shut.
With this guy on board from now on, wouldn’t they be tormented to death?
Remus rubbed his bald head, looking confused. “Sorry, that was a lot of questions. I’ll ask you more later.”
So, he still didn’t understand why everyone had told him to shut up?
Indeed, tech geeks were creatures with extremely low emotional intelligence.
On September 30, 225 of the Star Calendar, after a brief rest, the Princess set sail from Datianxi, continuing along the interstellar route. The next goal was to leave the Twin Star System and head toward the Condor System.
Li Jian’an wasn’t on the ship. He had chosen to stay in Datianxi to find new homes for the cloned children, planning to reunite with the Princess in the Condor System only after he felt completely at ease.
Thus, the responsibility of first officer temporarily fell to Zhang Jun. Finally, the courses he had studied and the training he had received were put to use.
“I… actually, I’ve never piloted a real spaceship before,” Zhang Jun said, both excited and nervous. “Back in school, we only used simulators. I’m afraid something might go wrong…”
Yu Ke asked him, “How were your grades back in school?”
“Not bad,” Zhang Jun said modestly. “Apart from physical education, I mostly got A+. My tuition was covered by scholarships from the school. I set the highest record for theoretical courses in the academy. Overall, I’d say it was passable…”
Remus, who had been buried in lines of code, looked up in disbelief. “All A+?”
“Yeah,” Zhang Jun replied. “Only in physical education did I get an A-. It’s rare for an Omega to score an A. My level is still somewhat acceptable…”
“If I had grades like that, I’d be a captain by now, not taking odd jobs in the black market,” Remus scratched his head. “So why haven’t you touched a spaceship all these years since graduation?”
“Well, mainly because I’m an Omega,” Zhang Jun said with a self-deprecating smile. “Omegas aren’t cut out to be space force material. My father told me countless times that the weapon of the weak is politics. Master that weapon, and even an enemy a hundred times stronger can be handled with ease. Unfortunately, I’m a failed politician.”
“My ideals were too abstract, and I lacked the cold-blooded tactics of a politician. I couldn’t become a brave warrior like All-free, nor a great man like my father. I mean it, this isn’t pessimism. I’ve come to accept it. What I need to do now is reflect during this journey with all of you and figure out what kind of person I should become.”
Lan Xing applauded him, Remus began firing off endless questions, and Yu Ke, sitting in the captain’s seat, gazed at the breathtaking scenery outside the window. He picked up his camera, took a shot, edited it, and posted it on “BlogSpeak,” ready to upload as soon as they had a network signal.
BlogSpeak is one of the most widely used social platforms across the stars, and both Yu Ke and Lan Xing’s livestreams are hosted on this platform. Currently, her account has amassed 2 million followers, while Lan Xing has even more, especially after Datianxi awarded Lan Xing the “Peace Medal.”
Lan Xing did not want this honor and insisted on emphasizing that saving the prime minister was not her achievement alone, Princess Yu Ke had played a crucial role. She hoped Datianxi would award the medal to Yu Ke instead.
“We would very much like to do so, but the Kingdom of Ferrari issued a statement declaring that Princess Yu Ke has been expelled from the Ferrari royal family. Any act of bestowing honors or titles upon her will be regarded as an act of hostility toward the Kingdom of Ferrari.”
“This medal represents the sincerity of the Datianxi government. We wish to establish friendly relations with Panda and welcome the mermaid race to our lands. We hope you can accept our gesture on behalf of the planet Panda.”
Yu Ke was unaware of when she had been expelled by the Kingdom of Ferrari. Had such an announcement really been made? It was utterly absurd.
The spacecraft traveled for four hours and passed by a space station. In just a few minutes, Yu Ke’s phone exploded with notifications.
Her video had been posted, and likes and comments from fans flooded in. By the time the signal was lost, countless messages remained unread.
“The scenery is breathtaking! I envy those who can travel in their own spacecraft.”
“Promise me you’ll post updates like this often, I’m looking forward to your travel documentary!”
“Princess, we love you!”
“…”
