- Chapter 57 - The Prime Minister
The morning’s interrupted affair unfolded in this manner within the hospital.
Yu Ke had confirmed there were no surveillance devices in the room, she had thoroughly checked upon entering. The door was also locked from the inside, though the soundproofing seemed rather inadequate, as voices from the corridor still seeped in.
The more this was the case, the more excited Yu Ke became. She had Lan Xing sit on her lap, gently touching and pleasing her, evoking both delight and restraint. Lan Xing’s face flushed as red as a persimmon, tears welling in her eyes.
Lan Xing dared not make a sound, fearing any unusual noise might be overheard by outsiders. She was a princess, and a princess must carry herself with dignity. Engaging in such activities in this peculiar place was hardly befitting of her status.
Yet she couldn’t resist. With just a glance from Yu Ke, her heart would race, and sensations would stir within her.
“Here… the scent might leak out,” Lan Xing whispered, almost tearfully.
This thought only heightened Yu Ke’s excitement, especially after she caught a faint whiff of champagne in the air.
Yu Ke held Lan Xing, unable to let go, and leaned close to her ear, whispering with a laugh, “But this morning, you couldn’t produce pheromones, Xing’er. I suspect… perhaps I’ve never quite discovered your particular inclinations.”
Lan Xing let out a soft murmur, shifting slightly, looking so pitiful that it felt almost sacrilegious not to kiss her fiercely.
Meanwhile, Remus, noticing Yu Ke hadn’t responded to his messages, asked, “What’s the situation? Has the plan changed?”
At that moment, Yu Ke was carefully wiping Lan Xing with tissues. The trash bin was already half-filled with used ones.
Lan Xing adjusted her nurse’s uniform, embarrassed, and said, “The pheromones… they’re bound to leak…”
“Indeed, if an Alpha catches your scent, they’d surely lose control and go wild,” Yu Ke replied, taking out an inhibitor spray. She sprayed it on Lan Xing’s neck and the side of her leg, then whispered, “But if I mark you, you won’t have to worry about such things.”
“That’s fine, sister,” Lan Xing murmured, lowering her eyelids, her face still flushed. “As long as I can produce pheromones smoothly next time, you must… mark me. Otherwise, I’ll fall behind, won’t I?”
Yu Ke was momentarily taken aback, about to ask what she meant by “falling behind,” when Remus’ call abruptly interrupted them.
“Seriously, at least reply to a message,” Remus said. “You suddenly went silent, I thought something had happened.”
Yu Ke checked the surveillance feed, cleared her throat, and replied, “No issues at the moment. The Prime Minister’s side seems perfectly secure.”
Remus’s voice grew stern. “Then why didn’t you reply earlier?”
“Sorry,” Yu Ke said. “I wasn’t checking my messages.”
“I don’t believe it,” Remus insisted, quite seriously. “In such a critical situation, you wouldn’t ignore your comms. What really happened?”
Yu Ke glanced at Lan Xing, a hidden smile in her eyes. Lan Xing looked terribly guilty, clasping her hands together in a pleading gesture, begging her not to reveal their secret.
Pressed repeatedly by Remus and unable to come up with a good excuse, Yu Ke finally said, “I’m sorry. The truth is, I forgot my inhibitor and ran into a bit of trouble, but it’s all resolved now.”
Remus let out an “Oh,” and said, “So that’s how it is. That explains everything clearly. But now I’m really curious, how did you deal with your heat without any suppressants?”
Yu Ke remained unfazed. ” Remus, if you keep asking questions like this, we might not be able to continue our cooperation.”
Remus quickly caught on. “Ha, sorry! I have a habit of digging too deep and sometimes forget to read the room. Please bear with me!”
This incident was just a minor interlude. For Yu Ke and the others, the period that followed was truly long and arduous.
Li Jian’an sent an address, indicating that he had already arrived in Hongdu City with Hepburn and had made contact with Ivan Rum.
“If they try to take Hepburn by force, there’s nothing I can do about it.”
“Captain, I’m begging you, please tell me what to do next!”
“I’m not good at handling these kinds of situations, and Hepburn is just a child.”
Yu Ke replied with a single word: “Stall.”
Li Jian’an was on the verge of a breakdown. After seeing Ivan in person, he realized the situation was even more complicated than he had imagined.
Ivan was young and handsome, with beautiful eyes that mirrored Hepburn’s. Gazing at Hepburn, he said gently, “Welcome home, little sister.”
Hepburn stared intently at Ivan, having completely forgotten that he had once wanted her heart. Her lips trembled slightly as she whispered, “Are… are you, my brother?”
“Both by blood and by ethics, you are my dear sister,” Ivan said, holding a cute hamster plushie as he approached Hepburn. He crouched down to her eye level and smiled. “You look exactly like Laysa did when she was little.”
Hepburn adored the hamster plushie. She happily accepted it, feeling an immediate sense of familiarity and belonging toward the man with the same ash-blue hair as hers.
This was her family. From now on, she had a home.
“Thank you,” Hepburn said, hugging the plushie and stroking its adorable ears with satisfaction. “I really like it.”
“There are plenty more at home,” Ivan said gently. “If you’d like, you can stay here and live with us.”
Hepburn’s eyes sparkled with longing, but Li Jian’an spoke up in disgust, “Stop with the sweet talk. To you, Hepburn is nothing more than a cell Miss Laysa discarded in a lab. This act of yours is just nauseating!”
Hepburn looked at Li Jian’an in surprise, her grip on the plushie tightening nervously. Ivan remained smiling and gentle as he said, “It’s alright, my youngest sister. To us, you will always be the sister of Laysa and me. No matter what others say or think, my love for you will never change.”
“Stay,” Ivan extended his hand to her. “I’ll take you to meet Laysa. You must want to see her, she’s the person in this world with the deepest bond to you. I’m sure you’ll like her.”
Hepburn agreed and took Ivan’s hand. Li Jian’an quickly interjected, “Ivan, as agreed, you must destroy that directive!”
Ivan’s gentle expression faded as he turned to Li Jian’an and said, “Of course.”
Li Jian’an’s heart raced with anxiety. All he could do was buy time, praying silently that Yu Ke and the others would succeed.
Twenty-six hours had passed since Yu Ke and the others infiltrated the hospital, yet the assassin still hadn’t shown themselves.
Remus began to voice his doubts, “Boss, is your intel even accurate? Could we have been tricked?”
“No,” Yu Ke replied firmly, “The person who gave me the information is extremely reliable.”
When Lan Xing heard Yu Ke say this, her eyes flickered with a hint of something unreadable, but she didn’t ask any questions. She quietly kept watch over the surveillance feed, leaving the break room every hour to patrol each floor.
Yu Ke was worried that her moving around might expose them, but Lan Xing insisted that there might be blind spots the cameras couldn’t cover, and it was better for her to check in person.
Their opinions diverged, and for the first time, Lan Xing stood her ground. She carried out her patrols carefully, leaving no room for mistakes.
By midnight, the hospital was nearly empty, with only a few scattered guards remaining. The hallways and wards were eerily silent, yet Lan Xing still insisted on going out to patrol.
Upon hearing her decision, Yu Ke asked in surprise, “Aren’t you scared?”
“Huh?” Lan Xing blinked, “Scared of what?”
Yu Ke pointed at the clock, both the hour and minute hands rested on the 12, creating an unsettling atmosphere. Just thinking about the silent hospital lobby gave Yu Ke goosebumps.
Lan Xing didn’t seem to understand. She looked full of energy as she said, “It’s midnight! According to the plan I set, it’s time to do a patrol!”
“Uh… Xing’er, don’t you find this a bit creepy?” Yu Ke said, “This is a hospital, after all.”
“Not at all,” Lan Xing’s gaze was pure and clear, “Sis, are you… a little scared?”
“Alright,” Yu Ke sighed, “Come to think of it, I’ve never seen you scared before. Back on Planet 356, you charged right into that huge crowd without hesitation. And now, too. If I don’t do something, won’t I seem too cowardly?”
“Not at all,” Lan Xing laughed, her eyes curving into crescents, “The deep sea has far scarier things than this. I guess… I’m just used to the dark.”
“I see,” Yu Ke stood up, “How about I join you on patrol? I need to get used to this kind of atmosphere, especially if I’m going to the deep sea with you someday.”
“Sure,” Lan Xing hugged her notepad, “Just follow behind me, sis. Some hallways don’t have lights on, but it’s not dangerous.”
Yu Ke felt a little embarrassed. She instructed Remus to keep a close eye on the surveillance, then followed Lan Xing as they patrolled the hallways.
Some corridors were unlit, with only the flickering lights of medical equipment. Yu Ke’s mind kept conjuring up scenes from horror stories she’d read before. It wasn’t until Lan Xing took her hand that Yu Ke felt reassured, forcing herself to push away the eerie images in her head.
Before this, she had always held a romanticized view of the deep sea, imagining that the place where Lan Xing used to live was as beautiful as a castle. But now, it suddenly dawned on her, how could there be castles in the deep sea? All that existed there was darkness, cold, and monstrous creatures of the abyss.
Since the 10th and 11th floors were close to the 12th, there were no patients there. The hallway lights were off. As the two passed through, they suddenly heard a sigh coming from a dark corner deep in the corridor.
Yu Ke’s skin crawled, but Lan Xing insisted on checking it out.
Summoning her courage, Yu Ke walked ahead, following the sound until they found a dimly lit hospital room.
It was clear that someone was lying inside. Yu Ke could hear the patient’s heavy breathing and the foul odor emitted by someone on the verge of death.
After confirming there was only one person, Yu Ke pushed open the hospital room door with her flashlight, directing the beam toward the bed. She froze in shock.
“Prime Minister?” Lan Xing, standing behind Yu Ke, let out an incredulous gasp.
The elderly man was still conscious, his eyes pleading for help. Yu Ke and Lan Xing immediately sprang into action, fitting him with an oxygen mask while simultaneously notifying Remus to lock down the entire hospital building.
Five minutes later, Remus concluded, “Someone tried to escape through Gate 13, they must be the assassin!”
Yu Ke instructed the hospital guards to apprehend the suspect at Gate 13 and informed the medical staff on the 12th floor that the Prime Minister they were guarding had been swapped out, urging them to immediately investigate any suspicious individuals.
Lan Xing remained steadfastly by the Prime Minister’s side, refusing to leave even when medical personnel arrived. Only after confirming his heart rate had stabilized did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The assassins were caught, two in total. They had first disguised themselves as medical staff to infiltrate the 12th floor. After gaining trust by accompanying the Prime Minister for some time, they took advantage of a bed linen change to swap him out, hiding him in a laundry cart and transporting him to the 10th floor. Given the Prime Minister’s condition, he would not have survived more than half an hour under those circumstances.
However, their luck ran out when Lan Xing and Yu Ke happened to be patrolling the 10th floor, completely foiling their plan.
The assassins were taken away for interrogation, but Yu Ke and Lan Xing also faced scrutiny from government officials.
“You’ve been infiltrating the hospital for two days. How can you prove you’re not the assassins?” said an investigator from the Datianxi Federation. “The hospital’s security and surveillance systems show signs of intrusion. In a way, you could also be considered assassins.”
With impeccable politeness, Lan Xing replied, “Can you prove you are a Federation investigator, sir?”
The man produced his credentials. “This is my work ID.”
Lan Xing countered, “Credentials can easily be forged.”
The man pulled up his resume on a computer, showing them his photo on the official website. “Will this suffice as proof?”
“You could have undergone plastic surgery to look like the investigator. That doesn’t prove you are who you claim to be,” Lan Xing retorted.
“You-you want me to prove that I am myself?” The investigator grew flustered. “Isn’t this obvious?”
“Indeed,” Lan Xing said courteously, gesturing to herself and Yu Ke. “It’s equally obvious that we are not assassins. Why, then, are you insisting we prove it?”
Yu Ke chimed in, “This investigator likely knows very well that demanding proof from us is merely a tactic to buy time, allowing the mastermind behind this to cover their tracks. Under these circumstances, we have every reason to suspect this investigator is colluding with those who sent the assassins.”
An uproar ensued. The investigator, unjustly accused, found himself unable to defend his position clearly amid the chaos. In the midst of the commotion, the Prime Minister regained consciousness.
“Prime Minister, how are you feeling? Do you remember what happened earlier? Regarding these two suspicious individuals-”
“My saviors,” the Prime Minister’s aged voice declared, each word spoken with clarity.
