- Chapter 12 - Unexpected Turn of Events
Lan Xing lowered her head and kissed her eyes. Yu Ke’s breath hitched as she reached out, wrapped her arms around Lan Xing, and kissed her back.
So, this is how intense missing someone could feel.
It was as if her chest had been torn apart, leaving her feeling incomplete no matter what. Trembling, she held the other tightly in her embrace, kissing her lips, her neck, her ears…
The two of them shared a fervent kiss on the grass. Lan Xing’s body was soft, and as she leaned into Yu Ke’s arms, Yu Ke felt her heart melt.
“I didn’t know you would come,” Yu Ke felt like a fool. “I thought… Sang Jiu would help me pass on a message.”
“It was me who wanted to see you, Your Highness…” Lan Xing spoke softly, pausing briefly before continuing, “I hope you don’t mind too much. Perhaps in a few hours, the effects of the mark will fade, but until then, I simply couldn’t bear it anymore…”
Yu Ke hesitated, then leaned down and kissed Lan Xing’s forehead.
So, it was because of the mark’s effects.
And here she had been so happy just moments ago, thinking Lan Xing had reciprocated her feelings.
Yu Ke’s heart felt hollow. Lan Xing rested her head in Yu Ke’s lap, her expression growing solemn.
“Did you bring suppressants this time?” Yu Ke asked.
“Mm,” Lan Xing replied after a moment of silence, her voice tinged with a nasal tone. “We can’t let it happen like last time.”
Hearing the unusual quality in her voice, Yu Ke suspected she might be crying and fell silent, gently stroking her hair.
Sure enough, Lan Xing’s body trembled lightly. She buried her face in Yu Ke’s chest, warm tears rolling down as she began to sob.
“Is it because of the wedding gift?” Yu Ke asked as gently as she could.
“No, it’s not that,” Lan Xing wiped her eyes. “Your Highness, I’ll be fine in a moment.”
Yu Ke hummed in response, her heart aching with a dull, persistent pain.
After a long while, Yu Ke asked, “Do you like him?”
“Prince Yu Jie has many good qualities,” Lan Xing said. “His recent behavior has a lot to do with me.”
She was evading the question, not giving a direct answer. Yu Ke’s heart grew cold at her words.
Lan Xing pursed her lips and whispered, “Because of the mark, I wouldn’t let him hold my hand or touch me. Yu Jie was furious. He suspects there’s something between us, which is why he’s been targeting you so much.”
An Omega who has been marked cannot accept other Alphas. Some fragile, marked Omegas may fall into depression and die if violated by another Alpha.
Yu Ke recalled how, during the banquet, Yu Jie would occasionally rest his hand on Lan Xing’s shoulder.
How had she reacted at the time?
Yu Ke remembered her furrowed brows and the forced smile she wore when meeting others’ gazes. Her heart ached at the memory.
She remained silent, listening as Lan Xing continued, “In a few hours, at most by tomorrow evening, the effects of the mark will fade. After that, no one will ever know about this, right, Your Highness?”
Yu Ke stroked her hair, a helpless smile playing on her lips. “I’d like to hear you call me ‘A’Ke.’”
Lan Xing lifted her face, gazed at her, and softly said, “A’Ke.”
Under the moonlight, Yu Ke saw the blush on her cheeks and couldn’t resist kissing them again.
“So, can I understand it this way?” Yu Ke said clearly.” “You came to see me to ensure I wouldn’t reveal the secret between us, and the secret about the color of your tail.”
Lan Xing lowered her head without uttering a word.
Silence meant consent.
Yu Ke felt somewhat hurt. “If it was just to make me keep the secret, you could have sent someone with a message. There was no need to offer yourself like this. I…”
She paused, her throat too choked with emotion to speak. After a moment, she continued, “I won’t reveal your secret.”
Lan Xing whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“You must have your reasons. I understand.” As she said this, Yu Ke found it bitterly amusing.
Was there something wrong with the script? She was supposed to be playing the role of the heartbreaker, yet here she was feeling like the one who’d been used.
While Lan Xing comforted her, she was also eager to distance herself. Yu Ke couldn’t believe that Lan Xing didn’t have any feelings for her at all.
She rolled over, pinning Lan Xing beneath her, and gently sniffed the rose scent behind her neck. Her voice was low and dangerous: “Princess, perhaps you should consider my feelings…”
Lan Xing closed her eyes, breathing softly like a little white rabbit trapped in a predator’s embrace.
“You came alone, aren’t you afraid I might mark you again?”
Lan Xing’s heart pounded like a drum. She whispered, “I brought suppressants.”
Yu Ke gazed at her, wanting to imprint her image in her mind. After a long while, she finally released her.
She slowly got up, her movements somewhat clumsy, and staggered away, her figure disappearing into the night.
…
Jenny had never seen the princess in such a state.
When she returned, she was drenched, smelling of mud, grass, and… fish?
Jenny went to speak with her, but Yu Ke didn’t hear a word. She found a corner to sit in, motionless like a log, refusing to change out of her wet clothes.
She sat for hours. At daybreak, she suddenly stood up, took a shower, spent a little time in the study, and finally went to sleep.
She slept deeply, completely unguarded. Jenny walked to her bedside and gently covered her with a blanket.
“You must be exhausted.”
“Sleep well.”
“I’m still here for you,” Jenny murmured softly.
Before, she had lived for only one goal: to see the princess ascend the throne and avenge their people of the Green Water Planet.
But now it was different. She wanted to protect the princess, to ensure she claimed the throne, not for any grand cause, but for her, for who she was.
As for herself, Jane felt she should have vanished into the cosmic dust along with her homeland.
Jane stayed by the bedside for a while, then wandered into the study. She noticed the computer screen was still on and walked over to see traces of the princess’s recent browsing.
“Alpha Star System, the environment most similar to Earth before human differentiation.”
Earth?
Strange, why would the princess be looking into this?
Jenny had no intention of prying into the princess’s privacy. She turned to leave, but curiosity got the better of her. She decided to see what exactly the princess had been researching.
She had spent three hours in the study before bed, she couldn’t have been doing nothing.
Jenny returned to the screen. As she read, her expression grew increasingly grave, her face turning pale, her breathing becoming rapid. She shook her head in denial as she scanned the information:
“This can’t be…”
“How could this happen?”
“No, this must not be!”
She returned to Yu Ke’s bedside, staring at the sleeping figure, still unable to believe what she had discovered.
Why?
Since when had the princess been planning all this?
Was pushing her away also part of the plan?
Yu Ke slept restlessly, her brow slightly furrowed as if troubled.
Jenny approached Yu Ke’s side, reached out and gently touched her forehead, focusing her psychic energy.
In the past, Jenny would never have dared to do this.
Though she could peek into others’ thoughts, doing so to the Princess was a serious taboo. If discovered by the Princess, she would undoubtedly face severe punishment!
As her psychic energy flowed in, Jenny felt as if scalded by fire and was repelled.
This was due to her unsettled mind and lack of concentration. She needed to try again.
She wanted to know why the Princess had made that decision, this was her only means.
Jenny focused her psychic energy once more, but the wall in Yu Ke’s heart seemed like an impenetrable fortress. After a long struggle, at a certain moment, it finally broke through like spring water cracking ice, and she heard the sound of a heart breaking.
…
Yu Ke slept deeply and woke with a lingering ache in her shoulders. Checking herself in the mirror, she noticed what seemed like a rash near her gland.
On the coffee table lay breakfast, it was actually sesame cakes and soy milk?!
How strange the people of this country were, even making sesame cakes.
Yu Ke felt a wave of nostalgia for Earth. Coincidentally, Earth was also called Blue Star, Blue Star…
Ah.
She took a bite of the sesame cake but had little appetite. Returning to her desk, she continued researching information about the Alpha star system and checked when her reserved spacecraft would arrive.
Noticing the date, Yu Ke froze…
Wasn’t it just the 21st yesterday? How could it be the 23rd today?
Had she slept so deeply she lost track?
Or had she misremembered the date?
She had often stayed up all night before but never mixed up the days like this, something felt very wrong.
Glancing at the news, she saw mentions related to mermaids and hesitated before selectively ignoring them.
A moment later, Yu Ke’s eyes were drawn again to related headlines. Unable to resist, she opened one and discovered the breaking news of the day.
“Prince Ferrari’s Fiancée, the Mermaid Princess, Missing… Suspected Work of Space Pirates”
“Marriage Alliance in Crisis! Panda Princess Disappears from Ferrari Palace!”
“Breaking: King Ferrari Deploys 100,000 Soldiers in Urgent Search for Mermaid Princess; All Starships to Be Mobilized if Necessary!”
“Prince Ferrari, Prime Suspect in Fiancée’s Disappearance, Arrested!”
Yu Ke was stunned. How could so much have happened in just one day and night?!
She rang for the butler. Just then, her phone buzzed.
An anonymous message arrived. Opening it, Yu Ke’s heart skipped a beat,
Lan Xing?!
In the video, Lan Xing was in a dimly lit environment, tied to a chair. She looked extremely uncomfortable, her head twisting, eyes red-rimmed. It was unclear if she was conscious, but the camera clearly captured the mark of her gland on the back of her neck.
In the study, the butler stood before Yu Ke and politely inquired, “Your Highness, how may I assist you?”
Yu Ke’s hand trembled as she held her phone. She glanced quickly at the butler and said, “Wait outside for me.”
Once he was gone, Yu Ke shakily continued watching the video.
In the latter part, several men appeared around Lan Xing, none showing their faces, but their silhouettes suggested they were Alphas. Seeing them, Yu Ke nearly jumped up in rage. One of them stepped in front of the camera, followed by a processed electronic voice saying, “See what we have in our possession?”
“A perfect Omega, guaranteed to go into heat, the mermaid princess of Panda Planet. Though we haven’t figured out how to transform her into mermaid form yet, she’s the real deal. If you want her, bring forty billion gold.”
Yu Ke’s fingers tightened slightly, and cracks immediately appeared on her phone screen.
She instructed the butler to prepare another silver electric scooter and immediately went to find the king and Yu Jie.
As the butler was leaving, Yu Ke asked another question: “Do you know how long I’ve been asleep?”
The butler looked at her puzzled and replied, “Your Highness, I’m not sure how long you slept, but you haven’t left your room for two days.”
So, Yu Ke had been asleep for two days?
Filled with confusion, she asked another question while mounting the electric scooter: “Who has been delivering my meals these past two days?”
“Your Majesty, it was Jenny.”
Yu Ke was momentarily stunned, but there was no time to ponder. She had to first ask the king if they had received any anonymous messages, then gradually track down the kidnappers…
Did Earth have time to wait?
A marked Omega is extremely sensitive. If violated by another Alpha, she might… die.
Yu Ke rushed to the king’s side, where he was discussing with others how to gather the forty billion gold.
