- Chapter 11 - Sang Ba
The atmosphere suddenly turned tense. Though Yu Jie still wore a smile as he reassured, “The starship will be named after you, isn’t that romantic?”
Lan Xing furrowed her delicate brows, her tone gentle as ever: “But I don’t know how to pilot a starship.”
“I’ll teach you, so don’t worry about that. Just imagine, this will be a starship that belongs only to us,” Yu Jie gestured enthusiastically. “We could even build a swimming pool on it, just for you. You could float in the pool while cruising through space!”
Lan Xing shook her head. “I’ve already experienced that on my way here. All starships from Panda Planet have pools.”
Yu Jie felt a bit awkward. He sat down and said, “Let’s set that aside for now. What about the wedding dress? Do you want to have it custom-made here, or should we have one sent from Panda Planet?”
Lan Xing showed little interest. She shook her head again and said, “I’m tired. May I go back now?”
Feeling somewhat deflated, Yu Jie glanced at the others. Queen Jiao wore an amused expression, but upon being noticed, she quickly hid her smile and waved her handkerchief. “You should escort Lan Xing back. Leave the king to me, and A’Ke can take Prince Ram home.”
They bid farewell at the door. Before parting, Queen Jiao pulled Yu Ke aside and whispered, “Did you see? I told you, the little princess won’t be happy with him. She’s so kind and lovely. Can you bear to hand her over to Yu Jie?”
Yu Ke felt troubled. Lam kept urging her from outside, so she left Queen Jiao behind and walked away.
She had arrived riding a silver electric scooter, a vehicle perfectly suited for traveling between different palace buildings. It was lightweight, convenient, and solar-powered. The only drawback was its single seat, making it unsuitable for carrying passengers.
Yu Ke rode the scooter up to Ram, who stared in disbelief. “You plan to take me back on this?”
Yu Ke: “.”
Ram scrutinized the scooter, his lips curling in extreme disdain. Finally, he glanced at Yu Ke astride the vehicle and clicked his tongue. “Well, it’s not entirely impossible.”
Yu Ke: “?”
Ram pointed to the crossbar in front of the scooter’s seat. “I could endure sitting there.”
Yu Ke: “???”
Pressing his lips together in a smirk, Ram suggested, “Or how about I ride on you? You ride the scooter, and I ride-”
Before he could finish, the electric scooter zipped away and vanished from his sight.
Ram stamped his foot in frustration. “Hey!”
As he stomped, he realized he had eaten so much at the evening banquet that his pants had split. He could only squat down, groaning, “Ouch,” tears nearly welling in his eyes.
Damn it, he had sworn not to overeat at banquets next time, why couldn’t he control himself?
Yu Ke rode through the evening breeze, Queen Jiao’s words echoing in her mind,
“The little princess won’t be happy with him.”
“Can you bear to hand her over to Yu Jie?”
“She’s so kind and lovely…”
Yu Ke twisted the throttle to the limit, but she had underestimated the scooter’s acceleration. Before she could react, the scooter shot off a small slope, soared over a row of trees, and flew into the night sky like a shooting star, before crashing into the water with a loud “bang!”
In that moment of flight, Yu Ke thought she was done for.
The speed of the fall exceeded a hundred kilometers per hour, even if she survived the impact, she’d be severely injured.
Fortunately, she had fallen into a body of water. Aside from the biting cold of the lake, she didn’t even feel any pain.
Perhaps this was one of the advantages of being an Alpha.
The night swans had already settled in the woods, and the swing beneath the willow tree stood empty. Yu Ke had sunk deep into the water, her shoes stuck in the mud below, making it difficult to pull them free.
The more she struggled, the deeper she sank.
At that moment, she was furious, wishing she could grab Yu Jie and beat him until he was picking his teeth up from the ground.
Why was he willing to marry Lan Xing but unwilling to give her an island? She was a mermaid, after all. For a mermaid to come ashore… it was like splitting her tail in two, every step feeling as though she were walking on the blade of a knife. She had always compromised herself for others, never truly getting what she wanted.
Someone in the distance had witnessed her fall into the water. Seeing that no one had surfaced for a long time, they immediately jumped in.
…
Yu Ke had fantasized about a dreamlike scene: herself in the vast ocean, with a beautiful mermaid with a blue tail swimming toward her.
But when she opened her eyes, what she saw was a person with the head of a crucian carp and two hairy legs paddling toward her. Instantly terrified, she snapped awake.
She kicked off the shoes stuck in the mud and swiftly swam to the surface, leaving the terrifying fish-man far behind.
After emerging from the water, the fish-man rubbed his small hands together, looking aggrieved. “I thought you were drowning. I wanted to save you…”
“Are you from Panda Planet too?” Yu Ke sat on the grassy bank, one leg stretched out and the other bent, her hand resting on her knee as she caught her breath. “Are you also from the mermaid tribe?”
“My name is Sang Ba, from the guard team.”
Yu Ke studied him. “I know Sang Jiu. Are you siblings?”
“Sang Jiu is my sister! I have eleven other sisters!” Sang Ba said proudly.
“I want to see Sang Jiu. You saved me, and I’d like to thank her. Can you go find her for me?” Yu Ke looked at him intently.
Sang Ba looked utterly confused and hesitated. “You… who are you? How should I explain it to Sang Jiu?”
Yu Ke smiled faintly and asked him, “Do you have a cigarette?”
Sang Ba patted the pockets of his shorts and shook his crucian carp head foolishly, his two blank eyes dull and lifeless.
“Take this to Sang Jiu. She’ll understand.” Yu Ke took off the delicate necklace from her neck and handed it to him. It was adorned with a beautiful pearl that glowed softly in the night.
Sang Ba grabbed the necklace and ran off.
Yu Ke lay back on the grass, stretching out her hand as she gazed at the stars in the sky, trying to identify the constellations in different directions.
This was the day she despised this country the most. She couldn’t stand the hypocrisy of its people. She wanted to leave the Kingdom of Ferrari. She had already made plans: sending Jenny away and offending Ram were only the first steps. Next, she would offend the queen and the crown prince, then request exile and drift through the stars in a spaceship.
But oh, how could she bear to leave Lan Xing in Yu Jie’s hands?
She didn’t love him.
She would never be happy here.
A torrential downpour raged in Yu Ke’s heart. She lay motionless on the grass, as if dead.
After a long while, she heard the faint sound of footsteps on the grass, and then the hem of a skirt appeared in her line of sight. Without even looking, she whispered, “Sang Jiu.”
The young girl approached slowly, crouching down in front of Yu Ke and reaching out to brush a leaf from Yu Ke’s face.
Her hands were cold, and she carried a unique fragrance with her.
Mermaids are probably all like this, living long-term in the icy seawater, their body temperature must be quite low.
Yu Ke remembered when she held Lan Xing, the mermaid was sweating, her skin flushed, yet she felt cold to the touch.
Just like now, even her breath… Was Yu Ke drunk?
She seemed to catch Lan Xing’s scent, that crisp, rich, champagne-like aroma with a hint of fruit, an intoxicating fragrance she couldn’t resist.
Yu Ke’s breathing grew rapid. Suddenly, a cold kiss landed on her lips. Her eyes snapped open, meeting a pair of sapphire-bright eyes.
Yu Ke heard her own heartbeat, like the sound of a whale plunging into the sea,
“Thump.”
“Thump.”
“Thump.”
She stared blankly at the person before her, not daring to blink.
Lan Xing had changed into Sang Jiu’s clothes, kneeling on the grass as she leaned forward. The ends of her golden hair brushed against Yu Ke’s chest. She raised a hand to remove her hood, revealing skin as pale as snow under the moonlight, her eyes carrying a bright, tender smile.
