- Chapter 1 - The Male Lead Is Reborn
Pain. My entire body ached. Is this a dream?
The people and scenery appearing in my hazy vision were completely unfamiliar, resembling scenes from some Xianxia dramas.
Someone was talking.
So noisy.
The closest voice was coming from directly above my head. Wanting to know who was speaking, I lifted my head using what little strength I had left.
Under the dazzling sunlight, the youth with his back to the light had facial features as exquisite as an ancient deity.
As our eyes met, the youth revealed a faint smile, a smile by no means filled with good intentions. He must have read that book to be having such a chunibyo dream.
The pain in my body was probably just a stomach ulcer acting up. Dreams often manifested as various kinds of pain, and this wasn’t the first time. Thinking this, I lost consciousness.
I was a high school senior. On Wednesday, I received a WeChat message from my younger sister, Yu Xin:
“Brother, you have to read this novel! A long time ago, the author held a contest for character names, and I left your name in the comments. Luckily, it was chosen, and your name is in this novel.”
“This author’s writing is seriously amazing, and her novels start with hundreds of thousands of subscriptions.”
She also attached a novel link.
Figuring Yu Xin was reading novels during class again, I simply replied that I would read it when I had time, and went back to doing my math problems.
By nightfall, just as I had finished taking a shower and was getting ready for bed, Yu Xin sent another message:
“Brother, don’t read it anymore! The author gave your name to the male lead’s senior martial brother in the story. This senior brother starts out great, treating everyone well and earning everyone’s respect.”
“Turns out, in the end, he’s actually the deepest hidden grand villain, a perverted creep who’s in love with the male lead and even imprisons him. His ending is tragic. It pisses me off so much!”
I comforted her with a few words, then clicked on the link. Being a fast reader, I managed to roughly finish the two hundred thousand plus word novel within a few hours.
And yet, when I woke up, I had transmigrated into the book, becoming that villainous senior martial brother.
Although the timeline was set not long after the story’s beginning, Junior Sister Yaoshuang liked the rabbits in the farmhouse yard down the mountain. The original owner had taken a rabbit and secretly placed it inside Junior Sister’s courtyard.
Intentionally using spells to injure the mortal and wiping the victim’s memory, the future male lead, Duan Qianyue, discovered the anomaly and stepped forward to check.
Other disciples saw this. Initially, everyone tried to investigate who was responsible, but the group of disciples had always looked down on Duan Qianyue.
Duan Qianyue kept to himself within the Starry Sky Sect, giving off an aloof and arrogant vibe. Aside from speaking with Junior Sister, rumors circulated that he had feelings for Junior Sister.
Junior Sister was cute and well-liked throughout the sect. Under the original owner’s instigation, claiming that Junior Sister liked the rabbit, Duan Qianyue liked Junior Sister, and had stolen the rabbit to curry favor with Junior Sister while injuring someone in the process, everyone believed it.
Using spells on mortals was a strict taboo within the Starry Sky Sect. Consequently, Duan Qianyue was tied to the Immortals’ Punishment Platform and subjected to twenty whip lashes, with the original owner wielding the whip.
The original owner used the lightest possible force to win the male lead’s favor, and afterwards took the initiative to care for him, thus gaining the male lead’s trust.
But now the roles were reversed. The one receiving the whipping was me. After twenty lashes, I was also sentenced to kneel for three days and three nights, followed by that malicious smile from the male lead, Duan Qianyue.
I felt that the only way to explain all of this was if Duan Qianyue had been reborn, or if he was also a time traveler.
A subsequent event made my suspicion even more certain. Held on either side by two junior martial brothers, I was brought before Elder Peng Ying Immortal of the Starry Sky Sect, who was the original owner’s master.
Upon seeing my frail appearance, Elder Peng Ying Immortal sighed.
“Yu’er has suffered,” the elder said. “Your junior martial brother accidentally grabbed the wrong whip, causing damage to your internal energy. I will do my utmost to help you recover. I have already punished him by sending him to Luocheng to find the Seed Spiritual Grass to make up for his mistake. He did it unintentionally; you must not harbor resentment against him in the future or damage your fraternal bonds as martial brothers.”
The white-haired, white-browed, and white-bearded elder spoke with an aged and authoritative voice.
“Understood, Master,” I replied. My voice was hoarse, and even I was startled by how it sounded.
Elder Peng Ying Immortal showed a hint of pity. As he channeled his spiritual energy to repair my internal injuries, my body gradually felt lighter, and the pain began to subside.
Yet, what ran through my mind was that wrong whip story was completely intentional. This Duan Qianyue was definitely not the shy youth from the beginning of the story. He had taken everything the original owner did in the book and returned it all to him. It looked like my days ahead were not going to be easy.
My personal rule of thumb has always been neither to look for trouble nor to run away from it, but all of this was secondary. The most important thing was finding a way back home.
From then on, I familiarized myself with this world’s cultivation methods, living a strict routine between the scripture pavilion and my quarters every day.
The internal energy damaged by the Divine Punishment Whip could not be restored through self-cultivation alone, so I had to practice swordsmanship instead, which turned out to be quite fun.
To ask who didn’t harbor a martial arts dream in their youth: high-spirited and bold, wandering the world with a sword in hand. Having just finished practicing a new set of sword forms, I watched as the sword qi cleaved through the fallen leaves on the ground, leaving a clean path before me.
In less than three months, I had browsed through every single sword manual in the scripture pavilion.
I recalled how, a few years earlier, a dance teacher had selected a few boys from the whole school to perform a classical dance she choreographed herself, set to Li Bai’s poem Will Jin Jiu:
“Do you not see the waters of the Yellow River coming from the sky, rushing to the sea and never returning?”
Reciting the poem aloud, I recalled the movements while wielding the sword. With every raise of my hand and movement of my feet, the falling leaves followed the trajectory of the sword. It was endlessly fascinating.
Feeling utterly cool as I recited “Together let us dissolve all ancient sorrows,” I withdrew the sword and watched the leaves drift down in orderly succession.
“Splendid.” Accompanied by applause, a dark figure suddenly landed right in front of me. I instinctively took a step back in vigilance.
Having arrived in this world for three months, I went out early and returned late every day, even choosing a secluded back mountain to practice my swordsmanship. I barely knew anyone in the entire sect.
“This big brother’s sword dance is truly magnificent.” The youth standing before me looked even younger than I was. Paired with an innocent and harmless voice and a radiant smile on his face, he appeared rather pure and cute.
“Who are you?” I asked, voicing my confusion. Though I knew few people, anyone who saw me would respectfully address me as Senior Brother. Moreover, the person before me was not wearing the sect’s standard uniform.
“Over there!” Voices approached from a distance, accompanied by a flurry of hurried footsteps.
The black-clad youth raised an eyebrow in mock helplessness, spun around, and vanished from sight in an instant.
“Senior Brother! Have you seen someone dressed in black?” Several sect disciples hurried over.
I pointed them in the correct direction and asked what kind of person they were looking for.
“An unauthorized intruder into the sect, definitely no friend. Senior Brother, please be careful.” With a clasped-fist salute, the group rushed off in the direction I had pointed.
Shortly after, I was summoned by Elder Peng Ying Immortal.
“Word has come from your Junior Brother Qianyue that he has successfully obtained the Seed Spiritual Grass,” the elder said. “Go down the mountain to rendezvous with him. Once you ingest the Seed Spiritual Grass to restore your cultivation, the two of you must take a trip to the Wang family in Luocheng together.”
