Chapter 46: Declaration of War
In the days that followed, the people of the convoy not only ceased their patrols, but it was as if a string in their brains had snapped—they actually sent someone to ask if the two of them wanted to travel with them.
The bearded man stood not far away, scratching his head. “It’s just that we’re worried you aren’t eating well. We have plenty of food on our trucks; you can eat whatever you want if you join us.”
That face, clearly intending to curry favor, made Yun Qianxue narrow her eyes.
She spoke bluntly, “You’re going to Base S, right? Your ‘Young Mistress’ told you to bring us along?”
If that so-called Young Mistress hadn’t given the word, this group would never be this amicable. Furthermore, they were likely treating them as people who needed to be flattered because that Young Mistress was paying too much attention to them. They probably didn’t even realize that their Young Mistress actually wanted them dead.
“You figured that out already?” The man was shocked. He clicked his tongue; it seemed these two women were much smarter than that little slut Na Anxue.
“Then I’ll be straight with you. Actually, our Young Mistress sent a special envoy to fetch you—also a wom… uh, a lady.” The man corrected himself just in time before letting a slur slip. “Our boss can’t stand her, so he wants you to travel with us instead. When we get before the Young Mistress, we hope you can tell her that we were the ones who found you first.”
In reality, if Na Anxue hadn’t brought the Young Mistress’s orders, they wouldn’t have discovered there were two people following the convoy at all. Every time he thought of this, the man felt a chill down his spine. His gaze toward the two women held an extra layer of vigilance.
“No need. Since it’s confirmed we’re going to Base S, we’ll head out first,” Yun Qianxue rejected him directly. Of course, since they were acting, they had to play the part well. “When we are before the Young Mistress, we will explain the situation.”
Yun Qianxue didn’t mind doing these people a favor. She smiled and said, “You clearing the zombies ahead has saved us a lot of trouble. I will put in a good word for you before the Young Mistress.”
“That’s fine, then. That’s fine.” The man was happy to hear this. He nodded. “I’ll head back, then. If you need anything, just ask the convoy. Don’t be strangers!”
Their boss had said that regardless of whether the Young Mistress wanted these two alive or dead, delivering them safely to the base was the right move. However, they weren’t comfortable having two threats right by their side. Two women, if they didn’t have some skill, how could they have lived so long in the apocalypse without relying on men? Therefore, having them go ahead alone instead of leaving with Na Anxue was the outcome he most wanted to see.
Except for him, no one was fit to be the right-hand man of the Young Mistress. Na Anxue wanted to take the credit for this? In her dreams!
Before the man could even leave, at Yun Qianxue’s signal, Yin Shaoqing slammed the accelerator and the car shot out. Since someone was willing to give them the address, what was there to fear?
Passing the convoy and heading straight north, Yun Qianxue murmured as she looked at the scenery outside the window. “I wonder if Zhe Yu found her husband yet…”
Hearing this, Yin Shaoqing comforted her, “Don’t worry. Even if she hasn’t found him, we’ll help her look after we deal with that Young Mistress.” Let alone a human, she would even help find a zombie if need be. After all, she was carrying a “bug” like the system.
“Host, I suggest you proceed with caution.” The Fat Calico Cat lay listlessly in Yin Shaoqing’s soul, full of worry. This was because it actually couldn’t detect any information regarding the “Young Mistress.” That kind of information blockade seemed to come from the will of this small world; it was protecting that person.
“Doesn’t matter.” Yin Shaoqing didn’t care. No matter how dangerous it was, she was going to deal with this person. She would not allow anyone to hold a knife to Yun Qianxue’s back, keeping her in constant danger.
Fine… The cat sighed. It knew that whenever it involved the Female Lead, its host would be stubborn to the end; nine oxen couldn’t pull her back. Well, unless the Female Lead went up to persuade her herself. Tsk, dog-couple!
Due to the road conditions, Yin Shaoqing and the other abandoned the car before entering N8 territory; the road was so rugged the car simply couldn’t pass. Even using abilities to build bridges wouldn’t work.
The woman, carrying large bags and small parcels, holding a pot and seasonings, with a bag of dried apples hanging around her neck, asked the person beside her from time to time: “Are you tired? Do you want me to carry the bow for you?”
Yun Qianxue’s self-modified bow was quite heavy. She was currently carrying the bow on her back and holding the miao dao, while everything else was dumped on Yin Shaoqing.
“You’re carrying everything, how could I be tired?” Yun Qianxue’s lips curved slightly, her heart feeling sweet. All along this path, she had been protected. This person feared she would get tired, so she carried everything herself, trekking with the heavy load. Fearing she would be ambushed by mutated animals, she took her hunting, never leaving her side to ensure her safety. Worried she would catch a cold in the rain, Shaoqing draped the only raincoat over her.
See, even when “Shaoqing” appeared, she still remembered to protect Yun Qianxue. This was something seared into her soul.
“So, I’m sorry…” Yun Qianxue murmured in her heart. No matter what, she would never let this person go. Yun Qianxue subconsciously touched her face; though she lacked confidence regarding her injury, she wanted to try for it.
“Is that so~” The tall woman squinted her eyes with delight, her tone even becoming lilting. It happened to be a cloudy day, and Shaoqing was happily humming a song. She had protected Ah-Xue well~
But when would this god-awful weather get better? Looking up at the dark clouds, Shaoqing sighed. This weather had lasted for seven or eight days straight; ever since arriving at the N8 border, the sky had never cleared. One day there was even thunder and lightning, making one fear the sky might collapse. Today there was no rain, but a strong wind had picked up. The wind carried a faint howling—it was hard to tell if it was the sound of wind through the valley or the sound of zombies.
“Are there no teams from N8 City coming out to hunt or collect supplies?” The deeper they went into N8 territory, the more Yun Qianxue’s brow furrowed. For so many days, they hadn’t encountered a single team. Not even a team, they hadn’t even met a zombie.
“I don’t know what’s up with them, but they’ve cleared the zombies quite well,” Yin Shaoqing remarked.
“That’s true…” Yun Qianxue walked forward in thought, failing to notice the loose rocks beneath her feet.
“Crash!” The sliding stones caused Yun Qianxue to slide down the steep slope for several meters, and she happened to get stuck perfectly in a naturally formed stone crevice. When she passed by here earlier, she had even remarked to Yin Shaoqing that this would be an excellent trap—if some fool fell in, they’d be wedged tight. As it turned out, the “face-slap” came too fast.
Yin Shaoqing was about to say something when she turned her head and found her companion gone. Looking down, the little girl was stuck in the stone gap with a bewildered expression. Although her heart ached for her, it was also quite funny.
Stuck Ah-Xue had a sour face, feeling she had lost face, while Shaoqing was stifling her laughter. “Wait, I’ll help you.”
She spoke while heading down, but in the next instant, her eyes widened in panic and she shouted, “Watch out!”
Yun Qianxue felt it; even before Yin Shaoqing spoke, she heard a sudden roar beside her. She turned her head to see a half-rotted hand scratching at her fiercely! Since her entire body was stuck, she could only watch as the hand clawed at her, gripping her arm tightly.
And then… and then it didn’t even tear her clothes?
Yun Qianxue remained expressionless. Tsk, what a waste of a heart-skip.
Yin Shaoqing, who was scared enough to almost release an ice spike, also saw this. She moved closer to pull the person out and saw the situation inside the stone prison clearly. It was a female zombie wedged in the gap, her fingernails and teeth having been forcibly pulled out. That mottled, rotted face had once given them the most gentle smile.
“I will protect you too, even if my ability isn’t enough.” Zhe Yu had told them bashfully yet firmly that she would never hurt them.
So, with what kind of despair must she have been in after being bitten, dragging her scarred body to wedge herself into this stone prison, and pulling out her fingernails one by one? Smashing her own teeth, blood flowing like a fountain, waiting in loneliness and weeping to turn into a monster. If I turn into an unrecognizable monster, but I’ve pulled out my teeth and nails and wedged myself in here, I won’t hurt you, right? She would protect them, using everything to fulfill her promise.
“How could this happen…” Yun Qianxue’s eyes unconsciously turned red as she stepped forward, trying to move the stones by hand. Yin Shaoqing moved first, using her ability to move the rocks away. The completely zombified Zhe Yu lunged at them, roaring!
Yun Qianxue pinned her to the ground, letting her struggle frantically, unable to escape. Then she saw writing on the white inner shirt exposed during the struggle. It was drawn in blood: “Save the children.”
In her final moments, Zhe Yu had jumped into the stone prison under Qi Ming’s direction and written a distress signal. This young mother had always, always been protecting her children. No matter what she became, or what method she used, she loved them.
Both Yun Qianxue and Yin Shaoqing drew a sharp breath. It was hard to imagine how Qi Ming and An An were doing now.
Feeling somewhat lost, Yun Qianxue looked up at Yin Shaoqing. “What do we do now?” She was truly panicking. What should she do? Save the kids, but what about Zhe Yu?
Yin Shaoqing pondered for a moment, opened the stone prison, her eyes unreadable. “Wedge her back in.” It wasn’t that she couldn’t strike, but she wasn’t sure if Zhe Yu could be saved. Perhaps like in novels, once they dealt with the source of the virus, Zhe Yu would turn back into a human?
Seeing this, the Fat Calico Cat dared not say a word. It didn’t dare tell its host that such things were lies. Because, like its host, it saw the light reigniting in the Female Lead’s eyes. That precarious light…
Yun Qianxue covered her eyes, settled herself for a moment, and said hoarsely, “Let’s go. Save the two children.” If they couldn’t save Zhe Yu, they must at least do their best to save the kids.
Hearing this, Yin Shaoqing silently took the girl’s hand and pulled her up the slope. She had once thought that when everything was over, she and the girl would go find Zhe Yu, and they would have another hot pot meal together. But now… Pain and parting had turned into a pair of hands, pushing them forward.
N8 City was the source of this tragedy.
Standing on the mountain peak, overlooking the zombies outside N8 standing motionless in the torrential rain like puppets, Yin Shaoqing’s gaze was cold. The so-called survivor base had likely turned into hell.
The sight of tens of thousands of zombies made Yun Qianxue’s skin crawl. She took a deep breath, and a wave of cold air rose from beneath her feet. Among those zombies, a tall Grade 3 zombie walked out. Yun Qianxue recognized that zombie’s face; it was the wind-attribute ability user who had guarded Base S in her previous life.
The zombie walked before Yun Qianxue and opened its palm; a peach blossom hairpin lay quietly in its hand. Yun Qianxue didn’t move; she stared at the zombie, on guard.
“No need to be so nervous, Xiaoxue. You shouldn’t be afraid of me.” The zombie spoke in the tone that Yun Qianxue found most disgusting. “After all, you are my most beloved woman, my fiancé.”
Her gaze was cold, her miao dao unsheathed and pointing straight at the zombie’s head. She said with loathing, “Yu Yinglang, you’re still so nauseating.” Like a turtle hiding in its shell, controlling a zombie to come forward, yet not daring to show his face himself.
The zombie rolled its eyes and grinned eerily. “No, no, no, darling, I love you.” Love your body, love your ability. “Come back. How about I use the whole base as a betrothal gift? No, the whole world—you deserve the best!” Your ability can give me infinite power; then I will become the king of the whole world. “Let’s get married, Xiaoxue, right in the base. I will give you happiness.” Let you become a part of me and create a great cause together; this is something you, a woman, should feel honored by.
“Clang—” The cold blade easily sliced off the zombie’s head. The rolling head took a mouthful of mud, which happened to plug that incessantly chattering mouth.
The woman holding the ice blade had an incredibly dark face. She kicked over the headless zombie. Standing on high ground, treading on a giant rock, Yin Shaoqing ripped off her backpack and threw it aside, her long hair tied high.
She let out a cold laugh at the million zombies below, all of whom had turned to look at her in unison.
“Stealing my person? What the hell do you think you are?”
Wind and thunder drummed, steel and ice became blades, and the earth turned into a bridge. Standing alone in front of Yun Qianxue, she declared war on Yu Yinglang, the commander of a million zombies!
