Chapter 37: Going Together
After dealing with more than a dozen zombies, Yun Qianxue broke a window and brought a table out of the house, managing to get the three terrified and hungry people down safely from the roof.
The young mother, who had given all the food to her children, was already weak with hunger; her legs were so soft she nearly fell when stepping onto the table. Fortunately, Yun Qianxue caught her just in time.
Yin Shaoqing pushed open the car door and walked out, handing water and food to the group. Taking off her sunglasses, she said, “Eat first.”
The young mother looked as if she had many things to say. Yin Shaoqing and Yun Qianxue exchanged a glance, both guessing that the group likely wanted to follow them. Yun Qianxue shot a look at the person beside her, and Yin Shaoqing, after glancing at the three people who were wolfing down the food, turned and followed her back into the car.
“Are we taking them along?” To be honest, aside from increasing the weight of the car, there really was no benefit to bringing these three. But, “You decide.”
Yin Shaoqing didn’t bother with these matters; she was only responsible for hunting and providing for the “family,” while everything else was handled by Yun Qianxue.
Yun Qianxue pondered for a long time, carefully calculating the benefits these three could provide. Finally, she made the call: “Let’s bring them.”
The young mother was named Zhe Yu. Her husband was a bodyguard who had gone on a mission with his employer a few days before the apocalypse and hadn’t been heard from since. The three of them simply wanted to head north to find him; after all, who doesn’t want a family reunion?
By observing the state of the two children, Yun Qianxue could tell that Zhe Yu was a skillful, meticulous, and capable woman. Yun Qianxue couldn’t stay in the car forever cooking and counting supplies; she needed to go out to kill zombies, scavenge, and become stronger. At the very least, she couldn’t rely on Yin Shaoqing’s protection forever.
“So you don’t value Zhe Yu’s ability?” Yin Shaoqing handed Yun Qianxue a bottle of water, raising an eyebrow. She had thought the girl decided to keep them for the ability to see aura colors and identify good, evil, or danger. Not going to lie, that ability was quite interesting.
“I don’t believe in that stuff.” Yun Qianxue took a large gulp of water. The weather was getting hotter, and as someone prone to sweating, her wounds had been throbbing with a dull pain lately. They were likely festering.
“I don’t believe in it either.” Yin Shaoqing nodded, put on her sunglasses, and sat back in the breeze, tapping her index finger. The human heart is like a spider’s cave; just because one spider spirit shows its face doesn’t mean it’s the only spider in there.
“The car they were driving still has gas, and it was parked right under the eaves. This wasn’t a sudden encounter with zombies.” Yun Qianxue narrated calmly, “Nine times out of ten, they were abandoned by their companions.”
Yin Shaoqing nodded and chimed in, “Abandoned is one thing, but I think those zombies were very likely lured there by her companions.”
“For fun?”
“It’s perversion.” Yin Shaoqing shrugged and stated a fact. “Are there few perverts these days?”
That was true. She had seen perverts who ate human flesh raw, let alone this kind of behavior—luring zombies to trap and kill others.
“Guess why they were abandoned?” Outside the car, the three were still eating; inside, the two were idle enough to start gossiping.
“Failed sexual advances leading to rage.”
“Mm-hm.” Non-committally, Yin Shaoqing thought so too, but: “Tsk, be more subtle. You’re a young lady; how do you dare say anything out loud?”
“It’s just the two of us. What’s wrong with me saying it?” Yun Qianxue ignored her. There were no outsiders. Why should she act pure and kind in front of an enemy? Sometimes, people are much more honest in front of enemies than in front of relatives or lovers.
“When I went to move the table, I saw many cigarette butts in the house.” It looked like they were left recently. There were also “foreign objects” on the bed—Yun Qianxue skipped over that part as it wasn’t convenient to say.
“If that’s the case, those two children must have abilities.” Yin Shaoqing leaned on the steering wheel, watching the well-behaved little boy and the cute little girl eating in small bites. “If it wasn’t for some reason that made it impossible for those people to strike, they wouldn’t have let Zhe Yu off so easily.”
Forcing a strong-willed, decent-looking married woman is a pleasure for some perverts. The kind of pleasure that deserves a lightning strike.
“Forget it, why bring this up? It ruins the mood.” Yin Shaoqing stretched. She was too lazy to use her brain; her daily routine just needed to consist of hunting, killing zombies, and collecting supplies. “What do you want to eat today? I’ll go hunting.” The area they were in was near mountains; further out, it would become a sandy wasteland. If they wanted meat, they had to hurry.
“I want beef.” Yun Qianxue leaned back, inconspicuously swallowing her saliva. She really craved hot pot. But she knew the sun hadn’t set yet; it wasn’t the right time for dreaming. So she said pitifully, “Anything is fine. Be careful on the road.”
One doesn’t know the value of supplies until managing the household, nor the hardship of hunting until doing it. During one year of her past life’s apocalypse, she hadn’t even seen a normal animal, only man-eating mutated ones. Meat had become extremely precious. Now that there were at least rabbits, fish, and pork jerky to eat, she was already very happy.
Yin Shaoqing, who was also inconspicuously touching the corner of her lips, replied, “I’ll try my best.” Honestly, she wanted hot pot too—the super spicy kind—paired with a glass of iced juice. Hiss, perfect.
After Yin Shaoqing left, Yun Qianxue got out of the car to search the surroundings for usable supplies. she scouted the house; except for a bag of nails and a pair of rusty scissors, everything else had been taken or destroyed. They truly hadn’t left Zhe Yu any way to survive.
After eating her fill, Zhe Yu hesitated for a long time before daring to approach Yun Qianxue, who was repairing the car, to say thank you.
“No need. Just consider this your advance salary.” Yun Qianxue’s expression was cold, and she didn’t even look up as she fixed the wires that had been cut. These people were truly wicked; they had cut the brake lines in Zhe Yu’s car and disguised the damage. They were afraid she might escape the zombie siege; they truly wished for her death.
“If you follow us, you’ll need to help us organize supplies, pack things, clean up, and so on.”
“Of course, hunting and gathering supplies will be done by me and the other person. You can follow along if you want, but I don’t guarantee your safety.” Yun Qianxue laid out the conditions directly to save Zhe Yu from hesitating and feeling suffocated by things she wanted to say but didn’t dare.
“No problem!” Zhe Yu nodded excitedly. As long as there was food and her children could be full, she was willing to do anything, even follow them to kill zombies. After all, she previously couldn’t take the initiative to kill zombies, and even gathering supplies required careful weighing of risks. With no one to look after her children, she couldn’t rest easy, but she was even less comfortable taking them with her to find supplies.
“I’ll fix the car for you. If you can drive it, follow behind us. Don’t fall behind.” If they fell behind, the two of them wouldn’t wait.
“If it can’t be driven, just bite the bullet and drive it anyway.” In any case, she wouldn’t let the three of them sit in their car. Along the way, that originally empty off-road vehicle had been turned into a cozy little nest by her. It fit two people perfectly—not cramped, but with no room to spare.
When she had no choice, Yun Qianxue had stayed in terrible places and huddled in crowded groups. But now, she had been pampered into “pretentious” bad habits by her enemy. Thinking of this, Yun Qianxue’s persecution mania flared up again. she seriously suspected Yin Shaoqing wanted to spoil her with bad habits and then dump her outside alone, making her unable to survive independently in this apocalypse.
Tsk, what a malicious plot!
“Thank you, thank you…” Zhe Yu crouched to the side, watching Yun Qianxue lying under the car repairing it despite the dirt, and suddenly covered her face and cried. She had really held on for too long; she was so tired. Every time she coaxed her two children and told them not to be afraid, her own back was actually soaked with sweat from fear.
Before the apocalypse, she was a flower shop owner, arranging and selling flowers every day, living a leisurely and happy life. But who would have thought that one day, the world would change completely? Her husband was missing, and she had to take care of two children, alone and without relatives. Her friends had turned into man-eating monsters, and she had nowhere to seek help. Later, she finally awakened an ability, but her daughter fell ill with a persistent high fever. She sought supplies from “Brother Wang,” who was traveling with them, but the lecherous look in that man’s eyes made her nauseous.
The “auras” of those men were all chaotic and filthy; she didn’t dare trade with them again. But her daughter’s fever was very high. Just as she gritted her teeth and prepared to trade the gun she found for medicine, her son told her to go south, to a place far away that would take a day or two by car. There, she met the young girl in front of her. This girl wasn’t as old as she was, but seeing her kill zombies, repair cars, and be so strong… unlike her…
Yun Qianxue heard Zhe Yu’s sobbing, but she said nothing. During those three years, she had cried much more hideously than Zhe Yu. She once didn’t even dare to cry in front of others; she had to be calm, steadier, and more cold-blooded than anyone else. Only then could she gain a foothold among a group of ability users in the apocalypse. In the two years before reaching Base S, she had never exposed her ability. Even though her ability could make her the core of a team and allow her to live a good life easily, she had to be on guard against being discarded once her usefulness was over. She didn’t trust anyone.
“Originally, Brother Wang and the others wanted to take us to the base near City Y4, but my husband went missing in City N8, so I didn’t want to go with them.” Having cried enough, Zhe Yu simply sat there and started rambling about her experiences. “I’ve been with them for over half a month. At first, the zombie virus broke out at the flower shop, and everyone was in a panic.”
The people nearby were all under control, and her flower shop was locked down. she could only hide in the room with her children, not daring to go out. In their building, people turned into man-eating monsters every day. Her neighbor, Brother Wang—usually a very honest and kind man—suggested she escape with them. The lockdown zone was too chaotic at the time; she feared that if she died one day, no one would take care of the children, so she took the risk and escaped. From the lockdown zone to the streets outside, they hid for a week, and then the lockdown was breached. The whole city was full of zombies, so they kept heading north.
“Looking back now, they agreed to help me find my husband in the north only because I had a lot of food. They didn’t have abilities back then.” And her husband had money; they were hoping to rely on him once they reached the north.
“You’re right, my ability is unreliable.” Zhe Yu bit her lower lip, her eyes red and swollen from crying. But it was a good thing she listened to Yun Qianxue; after coming back, she stopped relying blindly on her ability. she discovered that when she looked at them without the aura colors, it was terrifying—those beasts had actually been treating them as “emergency rations” all along! Edible emergency rations!
Zhe Yu fled in terror with her children, but they were caught; the men stole her food and medicine. They even lured zombies there. If it hadn’t been for An An’s ability, she probably would have been destroyed by those beasts.
Yun Qianxue listened quietly. she glanced at the two children in the distance. The brother was playing with the sister; the two children were very well-behaved and wouldn’t run around. Even more, the two children would occasionally scan the surroundings vigilantly, as if on patrol. Children who come out of cruel times, if they survive, will be very mature. They were protecting their mother in their own way.
“Things will get better in the future.” The setbacks Zhe Yu had suffered were all experiences for stepping into the future. Yun Qianxue didn’t dare promise they would always be there; as long as she and Yin Shaoqing were around, Zhe Yu and the two children wouldn’t face trouble. she wasn’t even sure if she could survive until 2107, so how could she guarantee anything to anyone else?
“The car is fixed. I’ll organize your future tasks into a table and give it to you later.” Yun Qianxue stood up and patted the dust off herself. Her fingertips unconsciously brushed the bandage on her face. The dull pain there was becoming clearer, slightly affecting her mood. “Go test the car first. When the other person returns from hunting, we’ll process the supplies and leave.”
The other person…
Zhe Yu was very sharp. Likely having cried too much and feeling relaxed in front of Yun Qianxue, her mouth slipped: “Are you two not familiar?” Why were there no other names between the two of them?
“Not familiar.” Yun Qianxue waved her hand, threw the tools into the toolbox, and said expressionlessly, “I am enemies with her.” The life-and-death kind of enemies.
“Oh…” Zhe Yu nodded understandingly. “I get it, I get it.” Enemies, huh? Just a playful, pouting nickname between young girls. The relationship between these two clearly didn’t look like they had a grudge. Zhe Yu laughed twice; she figured the person who went hunting had probably annoyed this little girl. The kid was just angry.
Yun Qianxue: “?” What do you mean, “Oh”? No, what kind of weird stuff are you thinking?!
