Chapter 31: Exploding the Kitchen
The nearest hospital to the Huaxiang Apartment was in the formerly prosperous district two streets away, which had now become a gathering place for zombies.
Yin Shaoqing, carrying a hiking backpack scavenged from an abandoned commercial building, dove headfirst into the zombie horde.
She needed a large quantity of medicine. Since the nearby pharmacies had been looted clean, she had to take the risk.
After the female lead fainted, Yin Shaoqing cleaned her wounds. Yun Qianxue showed no signs of turning into a zombie. However, deep scratches and bite marks ran from the corner of her left eye down to her cheek, as well as on her arms, shoulders, and collarbone.
Other injuries could be bandaged casually, but the ones on the face could not; they had to be handled properly. A girl shouldn’t have scars on her face.
“So you came here to seek death?”
The fat calico cat wished it could pry open its host’s skull to see if it was filled with paste.
Yin Shaoqing remained silent, offering mute resistance. That little girl was so cute; it would be hideous if she were left with scars on her face.
“No, even if you find good medicine, her face will still scar, won’t it?” the cat asked, perplexed. Given the current apocalyptic conditions, there was no proper environment for the female lead to recover. It would be a miracle if her wounds didn’t suffer a secondary infection, yet her host actually wanted to cure her completely?
“Sigh…”
Ever since she changed bodies, sighing had become a habit for Yin Shaoqing. She kicked off the ground and climbed up a nearby tall building. There were too many zombies on the ground; traveling along high ground was safer.
Fine then. The fat cat rolled its eyes in anger. It simply couldn’t control this “ancestor.”
“Just keep courting disaster!” the cat barked crossly, then hid within Yin Shaoqing’s soul to mope in seclusion. Discipline isn’t easy; the cat sighs!
Regarding the cat’s worry, Yin Shaoqing was touched, but she felt it could rest easy. Although this body’s mind wasn’t quite normal, its potential was excellent. Being in danger was the best way to stimulate potential. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”—she liked that saying.
Yin Shaoqing climbed the rope to the roof of the hospital and headed down the stairs. There were about two hundred zombies hidden in this hospital, and there was even a Rank 2 zombie among them. It was faster and significantly stronger.
Yin Shaoqing raised her right hand and snapped her fingers crisply by her ear. A nearly one-meter-long ice blade appeared in her hand.
The sound of the snap attracted nearby zombies. Yin Shaoqing charged forward with the blade, her sharp, thin ice edge easily slicing off one zombie head after another.
“Heh… Roar!” More and more zombies ran toward the stairwell, attacking from both front and back. Yin Shaoqing’s situation grew precarious. Her gaze turned sharp as she pressed her palms together; when she pulled them apart, the ice blade split into two, the right sweeping forward and the left blocking her rear.
With the hilt-ends joined, Yin Shaoqing wielded the two-meter-long double-ended blade with formidable power, swiftly harvesting the heads of the surrounding zombies.
The only downside was that the stairwell was too narrow; she had already gouged the two walls with countless scars. Amidst the chaos, she even found a moment to reflect—it seemed her ability’s strength was decent; at least the ice blades hadn’t shattered.
“So why can’t you just make the blades shorter?” the fat cat finally couldn’t help but ask. Every time the ice edges scraped the wall, wasn’t that a waste of the host’s energy? Why couldn’t she make the blades half a meter shorter? Although “an inch shorter means an inch more danger,” given how she was currently slicing through them like vegetables, it didn’t believe a half-meter shorter would cause her to get hurt.
“No,” Yin Shaoqing refused instantly.
The ice blades in her hands transformed into sparkling ice shards and vanished after slicing off the last head; it was quite beautiful. She stepped out onto a path of frost, firmly covering the corpses with ice. Stepping over the snowy white ground into the depths of the dark corridor, Yin Shaoqing pursed her lips, her eyes dark.
She just didn’t like getting blood on herself. Because it was dirty.
Fat Cat: “…” You’re so fastidious, it’s a wonder you didn’t just throw the blood-covered female lead down from the building earlier!
Unaware of how the system was criticizing her, Yin Shaoqing moved quickly to kill zombies and found quite a bit of medicine. There was too much medicine for one backpack to hold, so she simply took off her coat, bundled the medicine in it, and headed out. With her hands full, she couldn’t take the high path and had to fight her way out through the ground level.
The moment she stepped out of the hospital, grey rain began to fall.
“Tsk.” Yin Shaoqing irritably flicked her wet bangs. She hated rainy days, hated the night, hated the apocalypse, and hated this world.
Well, her “ailment” was flaring up again. A “sick” Yin Shaoqing was a bit crazy.
Starting from her right foot, the heavy step she took sent an extreme cold spreading outward. Within three seconds, the entire street was covered in ice and white frost. The zombies, whether wandering or running toward her, were frozen into ice sculptures. Her ability was just that unreasonable—even though it was only Level 2, it was so cold that raindrops turned into ice pellets half a meter before hitting the ground, clattering against the icy surface.
This sound is a bit annoying, Yin Shaoqing thought.
Fat Cat: “…OMG~”
It was ridiculous. Although the bodies her host “unboxed” each time had more or less some issues, their combat power was consistently and unreasonably strong. Of course, the prerequisite was that her host controlled the body; otherwise, those abilities could not be utilized to their full extent. A powerful mental strength and soul dominating an equally powerful body—they were the perfect fit.
By the time Yin Shaoqing returned to the apartment, the unconscious Yun Qianxue was talking incessantly in her sleep, seemingly caught in a terrifying nightmare. Yin Shaoqing reached out to touch her forehead; the dense cold sweat dampened her fingertips. She wiped the sweat from Yun Qianxue’s face, brought out the medicine and clean gauze, and carefully treated her wounds.
The girl had a classic heart-shaped face, round apricot eyes, a pert nose, and fleshy pink lips. Yes, her features were very delicate. Perhaps this body of hers was also a “visual-chaser” and a bit of a rogue. Yin Shaoqing looked at her finger pressed against the girl’s lip and reflected deeply.
Most unluckily, those beautiful apricot eyes opened. Their owner’s gaze shifted downward, staring fixedly at the presumptuous hand.
Truly a burning gaze~ If it could take physical form, her hand would probably be sliced into pieces. Having finished her thought, Yin Shaoqing calmly retracted her hand, stared at the expressionless girl, and said with utter composure: “The hand moved on its own.”
Yun Qianxue blinked slowly and said with a fake smile: “You think I believe that?”
“Why not?” Shaoqing tilted her head, looking innocent. She just happened to have a hand that her brain couldn’t control.
Yun Qianxue: “…”
Fat Cat: “…”
Dammit, whenever it’s night or raining, the host’s ‘ailment’ acts up! All sorts of unreasonable trouble and rogue behavior!
Yun Qianxue took a deep breath, reflecting on how stupid she was to even try reasoning with this malicious woman. Her brain must be broken.
“Hiss…” The sharp intake of breath tugged at the wound on her face, causing a stinging pain. She knew she was disfigured. It was the same in her previous life; when she jumped from the Huaxiang Apartment, she was caught by electric wires. Fortunately, the power in the entire city had long been cut, so she wasn’t electrocuted. But her wounds had festered and rotted due to the harsh environment, eventually turning into ugly, indelible scars.
Because of this, when she saw Yu Yinglang again, the fiancé who had always used sweet words and gentle affection to deceive her immediately broke off the engagement. He even told the public that she was a “toad wanting to eat swan meat,” a clown, and a third party trying to come between him and Yin Shaoqing.
“Don’t touch it. I just bandaged it. It will hurt; endure it.” Yin Shaoqing stopped Yun Qianxue’s hand from reaching for her face.
Yun Qianxue naturally felt that her wounds had been handled properly; this person’s bandaging technique was actually quite good. She gritted her teeth and noted this favor, but that didn’t mean she intended to get along with her. Struggling to get up, Yun Qianxue put on her shoes, thanked Yin Shaoqing, and prepared to leave.
“Leaving without eating?” Yin Shaoqing frowned, looking at the female lead’s small frame with confusion. “Aren’t you hungry?” It was now night; she had saved her in the morning. Where was she going on an empty stomach?
“I’m hungry.” But she didn’t want to stay with her enemy any longer. She feared she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from striking a dark blow.
“Then eat before you go.” Yin Shaoqing pulled out a woven bag containing frozen meat and fish she scavenged from a supermarket cold storage, as well as compressed biscuits and instant noodles from a warehouse. She threw the fish and meat to one side, picked up a stack of compressed biscuits to share with Yun Qianxue, and sat down on a chair with a swagger, ready to eat.
Having lived through one apocalypse already, Yun Qianxue couldn’t help but glance at the meat and fish again and again. Too wasteful, simply too wasteful! In the early stages of the apocalypse, temperatures were relatively high, and food spoiled very quickly. If this frozen meat wasn’t processed now, it would be completely rotten by midnight.
Yun Qianxue, who had been so hungry she chewed on tree bark in the apocalypse, felt a throbbing pain in her temples. She frowned, tilted her chin toward the meat, and asked: “What do you plan to do with those?”
“I don’t know.” A reply that was as unhesitating as it was unhelpful.
Yun Qianxue’s eyelid twitched along with her temper. “If you don’t process them now, they’ll be spoiled by midnight.”
“I know.”
“You know, yet you aren’t processing them?”
Yin Shaoqing shrugged and spread her hands. “I don’t know how.”
Yun Qianxue: “…”
Right. Yin Shaoqing was the only daughter of a wealthy family, with butlers and nannies to do everything for her. When had she ever done such chores? Looking at Yin Shaoqing’s refined and glamorous face again, Yun Qianxue felt that the cool, handsome air between her brows and her cold, powerful aura were too unfamiliar. This was not the pretentious, malicious woman in her memory.
“I’ll handle it. You help.” She made her first attempt at testing her.
Yun Qianxue took the meat and fish into the kitchen and brought out the large pile of seasonings Yin Shaoqing had brought back, preparing to marinate them. However, she couldn’t use force on her wounds, so: “Help me cut the meat.”
Yin Shaoqing blinked, put down her biscuit, and obediently went in to assist. Since she had heard the female lead’s cooking was exceptionally good, Shaoqing could give this terrifying place called a “kitchen” a try.
“Bang!” This was the sound of a sharp kitchen knife chopping right through the cutting board. The frozen meat that was supposed to be cut fell to the floor with a “splat,” rolling twice and getting covered in dirt.
“Duang!” Yun Qianxue watched helplessly as a pathetic fish head flew out in a graceful arc, its white-eyed gaze seemingly mocking her poor choice of help. And then there was the innocent metal basin…
The veins on Yun Qianxue’s forehead bulged. She didn’t understand why someone using a basin to hold meat would crush a stainless steel basin flat. That was a stainless steel basin!
“Thump!” After another fish head landed on her own skull, Yun Qianxue’s face turned ashen. With a chilling gaze, she pointed at the doorway and gritted her teeth at the woman who was as useless as a decorative plant: “Get out!”
Yin Shaoqing: “…” She blinked innocently and obediently scurried away.
“Slam!” The kitchen door was slammed shut behind her. Yin Shaoqing awkwardly touched the tip of her nose, feeling a bit sheepish. Did I just get rejected?
Fat Cat: “…Be more confident. Remove the ‘did I’.” It seriously suspected its host had traded her cooking skills for combat skills! It was hard to imagine that such a thing as “exploding the kitchen” truly existed!
