Chapter 4: Sleeping Together on the First Night? No Martial Ethics in Bed…
He scooped up a handful of peanuts from the bed.
Young Master Lu had to eat his fill before sleeping; hesitating for even a second would be disrespectful to the peanuts!
With the peanuts and lotus seeds on the bed suffering a “poisonous hand,” Lu Shuyao sat at the table eating while muttering: “I say, why did your family bother with all this? We’re two men. Forget sons, we couldn’t even hatch an egg.”
Eating improved his mood. Lu Shuyao generously extended his palm toward Su Cheyue: “You want some?”
The gentleman sitting on the bed seemed exhausted. His raven-feather lashes drooped, and his pressed lips relaxed slightly; though pale, they still complemented his picture-perfect, porcelain face.
“…” Lu Shuyao withdrew his hand, losing interest. As he cleaned up the “crime scene,” he continued: “You’re the protagonist. The loss of your five senses is only temporary. If the author doesn’t abuse you a bit, how can the readers empathize? By contrast, I’m the truly pathetic one. My hard-earned cultivation is gone just like that. I didn’t even get a chance to show off…”
“For the time being, we’ll treat each other with mutual respect. I’ll make up for my sins by taking good care of you. When you become a powerhouse again, you don’t have to be nice to me—just don’t torture me. Leave me looking like a human being, okay?”
At this, Young Master Lu glanced at the wedding wine on the table. He poured two cups, placing one in Su Cheyue’s hand and holding the other in the air.
“You’re older than me, so I’ll call you ‘Brother’! Let’s skip the ‘crossed-arm’ nuptial drink; we’re both men, no need for that mushy stuff.”
He clinked his cup against Su Cheyue’s with a crisp ping.
“Down the hatch! Here’s to peaceful coexistence!” Lu Shuyao downed the wine heroically.
Su Cheyue tilted his head toward the void, his expression looking somewhat puzzled, but he followed suit, raising the cup and pouring the wine down his throat.
Lu Shuyao said comfortably: “Honestly, the author is too cruel to you. In other ‘Dragon King’ novels, the lead might lose an eye or a leg at most. You got the full grand slam of disabilities. It’s a bit… fake…”
Wait, fake?!
…Could the author have dug a hole here? Was Su Cheyue pretending to be deaf and mute?
At this thought, Lu Shuyao’s focus sharpened. He began to stare intensely at Su Cheyue.
After a moment, he suddenly stood up and walked back to the bedside, standing directly in front of the man in red. To be comfortable, the handsome youth had stripped down to his white inner robes, and as he leaned over, his ponytail slid over his shoulder.
He waved a hand in front of Su Cheyue’s eyes. Then, he raised a middle finger in a provocative gesture. No reaction.
Realizing Su Cheyue likely didn’t understand the meaning of the middle finger, he remained bent over, thinking. Finally, he came up with a “mutually assured destruction” method—one so disgusting it was bound to work.
In the dead of night, by the flickering candlelight, Lu Shuyao suddenly chuckled softly: “Hey, Young Master Su. Since we’re married, we’re a legitimate couple. So now… I’m going to kiss you.”
Silence.
“I’m really doing it!”
Silence.
“I’m really kissing you now—”
He moved closer and closer until their noses were almost touching. Lu Shuyao looked into Su Cheyue’s eyes—still out of focus. The man didn’t move an inch. Instinctively, Lu Shuyao’s gaze drifted lower.
At this distance, he realized Su Cheyue’s lips weren’t that thin. The curve of the philtrum was perfect; the lips looked half-closed, appearing as if they might part at any moment.
Honestly… they looked very kissable. If only he weren’t a guy.
With the red robes reflecting a glow onto his face, Lu Shuyao looked away, still blabbering: “I’m… real… ly… gon… na… kiss… you—”
Being so close, Lu Shuyao could smell a faint fragrance, like a juicy green pear after rain. His warm breath brushed against Su Cheyue’s cheek. Only then did the “mural-like” beautiful gentleman finally knit his brows, a look of confusion crossing his face as he slightly tilted his head away.
Lu Shuyao: “…Tsk.”
Fine. If you’re faking it, I’ll hand it to you—you’re tough.
Lu Shuyao stood up and walked away, turning his attention to where he would sleep. There was only one bed. He didn’t want to suffer on the floor, and no one was forcing him to.
If I just sleep on the bed…
Between two men, it shouldn’t matter. Besides, certain someone was currently just a piece of “bedside art.” Might as well be comfortable!
The only downside was the winter chill and the fact that there was only one wedding quilt. Lu Shuyao sighed. He laid the semi-paralyzed Su Cheyue down flat, tucked the quilt around him, and then, with some reluctance, gathered his discarded wedding robes to use as a makeshift barrier, lying down in the empty space far to the side of Su Cheyue.
As the candles flickered toward their end, Lu Shuyao didn’t fall asleep immediately. He covered his eyes with the back of his hand and spoke softly to the person on the other side of the bed.
He only said these things because he was certain the other person couldn’t hear.
“Thirty-three days… I finally see you.”
“Do you know how it feels to be a stranger in a strange land? I left my familiar world for no reason. Some thing calling itself a ‘System’ made me do missions. Pushing you into the Ghost Purgatory was its idea.”
“I, Lu Shuyao, swear on my life—I never wanted to harm you, and I certainly didn’t want to marry you. But I have to survive. I have to go back. Besides, the Su family was kind to the Lu family, and Sect Leader Lu is better to me than my own father. And then there’s Lu Qingcheng…” He paused. “Forget it. Just consider this me paying back my debt to you.”
“This whole journey has been miserable. Sitting in a tiny sedan with a scented veil, people chasing me and calling me ‘bride,’ staring and imagining things… and I had to smile back at them. Do you know what it reminded me of? When I was a kid, my dad took me to play mahjong. Back then, I didn’t know the ‘mistress’ was a mistress. He’d pin little clips on my face and arms for fun. It hurt like hell. But I didn’t cry or make a scene. All my life, to make my parents happy so they’d stay together a few days longer, I’d do anything…”
“A long time ago, my dad said sexual orientation is fated. I didn’t believe him. Now look at this… a boomerang?”
His logic was fuzzy as he rambled on. Finally, he wrapped himself in the red wedding robe and drifted off, mumbling.
After half a month of travel, finally settling down and finding an emotional outlet allowed him to sleep soundly. He didn’t even dream. The memories of being pointed at on the road, like the memories of the adults at the mahjong table, were shamelessly pushed to the back of his mind.
He slept until sunlight flooded the room. Lu Shuyao woke up lazily—or rather, not because of the sun, but because of a certain reaction in a certain part of his body.
To be even more precise, it was a reaction caused by a certain part of his body being touched by something.
In his groggy state, a tongue-twister of a thought looped in his brain before his eyes snapped open.
Su Cheyue’s sharp profile was inches away. Lu Shuyao blinked, intending to throw off the covers and get up—
Wait, the covers?!
The bright red wedding quilt was draped generously over both of them, with almost no gap between them. The sensation of being touched beneath the quilt remained; it even moved slightly as Lu Shuyao shifted.
For a noble young master, your sleeping habits have no martial ethics!!
Lu Shuyao was about to swear, but he saw that Su Cheyue hadn’t opened his eyes yet, seemingly in the same position as last night. Then he looked at himself—his inner sleeve was pushed up, and his pillow and wedding robes were nowhere near where he’d left them.
“…………”
Fine. No swearing.
The twenty-year-old youth endured that familiar yet awkward sensation, his brain working at high speed to figure out a dignified way to leave the bed. Damn it, how can things be this messed up!
As luck would have it, Su Cheyue was awakened by his movements. The beautiful gentleman opened his eyes blankly, his light-brown pupils still misty with sleep.
A person who has lost their senses is often hyper-sensitive and curious about touch. Su Cheyue’s cool fingertips moved slightly, like he was used to stroking zither strings, brushing forward bit by bit—
Lu Shuyao squeezed his eyes shut: “Hey…”
This “scratching an itch through a boot” sensation was agonizing. Fortunately, Su Cheyue wasn’t stupid; he immediately felt through the fabric that this was human skin—and near the thigh.
In the moment Lu Shuyao’s brain short-circuited, Su Cheyue reacted faster. He abruptly retracted his hand and pushed himself up against the bedboard. He was well-bred, but the shock and embarrassment were written clearly on his face.
Lu Shuyao immediately sat up, jumped off the bed, and threw on his purple outer robe. When he turned back, his face was a mask of indifference.
After a moment of silent confrontation across the room, Lu Shuyao broke the awkwardness with a smile: “Morning, Second Young Master.”
He didn’t care if the person on the bed could hear him.
Prepared for no response, Lu Shuyao tossed a thick coat from the rack onto the bed for Su Cheyue and turned to walk out.
Suddenly, two cold, clean syllables came from behind him, tinged with the low rasp of a morning voice.
“…A man?”
