Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 38
“Ah… I already got the interview acceptance letter, but this entire summer break hasn’t stopped at all, I’ve been studying right up until school started.” Mu Lan buried her head in a pile of test papers.
“After all, you fell behind several months of classes preparing for that interview.” Gu Li handed the graded papers back to Jiang Nian beside her: “Also, why do you insist on switching seats during self-study period and doing your homework at my desk?”
“I wanted some math tutoring. You’re the one who got into University A through math competitions, after all.”
The competition results and interview outcomes were out, and all three of them had achieved good results.
As someone who’d already secured early admission, Gu Li could have skipped school this semester entirely. But having an excuse to spend more time with Jiang Nian was something she gladly took, so she simply brought her university textbooks to class to accompany Jiang Nian through the final college entrance exam push.
“You should focus more on physics.” Jiang Nian mercilessly exposed Mu Lan’s recent physics exam failure, then pushed away the hand trying to cling to Gu Li’s arm.
It was nearly 3 PM. As the class bell rang, Gu Li stood up as usual and bid them farewell: “I’m off to the gym. See you after school.”
“Alright.”
To make up for the fitness routine she’d neglected during training camp, she dedicated two hours daily to exercise. Her regimen even included evening workouts with Nian Nian on the track though she couldn’t explain why those “relaxation exercises” always left her with strange sensations.
But since Jiang Nian performed them seriously, she followed along, even adding extra sets due to her competitive alpha instincts.
With her schedule freed up, she could study university courses in advance while still having time to bike Jiang Nian home, occasionally currying favor with Granny Jiang. Life couldn’t be better or so she thought.
Until that phone call came.
“Hello?”
“Is this Miss Gu?” Ji Bai’s voice came through the receiver.
“Yes, what is it?” Why was he calling? Gu Wei’s gaze turned questioning, it was rare for them to share a weekend dinner together.
“Could you find somewhere private to talk?” Ji Bai seemed aware of company.
Gu Li set down her chopsticks and walked toward the bathroom.
“I’m here now. What’s this about?” She entered the restroom.
“Having learned of your early admission to University A from my father, I wanted to offer congratulations.” Ji Bai’s polite laughter only deepened Gu Li’s confusion they hadn’t spoken in ages.
As she prepared to thank him, the lawyer continued: “Moreover, I could really use your assistance lately.”
Gu Li raised an eyebrow. “Go on.”
She closed the bathroom door, locking it securely.
“You’re intelligent, so I’ll be direct. Regarding Director Gu… ahem, as a friend, I’d like to understand her romantic preferences. But asking directly would be too forward, so I hoped you might provide insight.”
Gu Li could practically picture Lawyer Ji’s expression on the other end of the line.
“Just as a friend?” The kind of help needed between friends might differ from what’s required beyond friendship.
“Ahem, more like bestie-level closeness. That term was actually something I picked up from you, President Gu.”
Truly befitting a chief lawyer taking subtle digs at her. Her own relationship with her bestie had already progressed beyond mere friendship; they were practically in the pre-relationship stage now.
But why should she help Ji Bai become her own A-mom? Was she that eager to play the daughter role?
“If we’re already at bestie level, just casually bring it up as a joke, Lawyer Ji.” The subtly mocked little Alpha fired back with playful sarcasm.
“Ahem, actually I’ve already tried that approach. The results weren’t ideal, which is why I’m seeking your help to ask more detailed questions. Besides, her response sounded somewhat joking at the time.”
“What did she say?”
“She said she could accept most things but wasn’t particularly fond of big Omega/small Alpha relationships.” The dejection in Ji’s voice was palpable.
“If I recall correctly, you’re five or six years younger than her?”
“Yes… I’m six years her junior.”
“Well then, I happen to be free recently. Need company after your heartbreak?” Gu Li heard knocking on the bathroom door behind her.
“Regarding the Jiang family’s convenience store relocation, I have connections who can help with the new location allocation. Miss Gu, just help me understand President Gu’s preferences, I’ll handle the rest myself.” Ji Bai seemed to have heard the knocking too, her voice dropping to a whisper before abruptly hanging up.
Staring at the darkened screen, Gu Li felt exasperated. What made Ji so certain she’d agree to help?
Opening the door, she offered Gu Wei an apologetic smile before returning to her dinner.
“Who was it?”
“Nian Nian, asking about math problems.” Gu Li kept Ji Bai’s involvement to herself, popping a piece of cauliflower into her mouth.
“Is your little bestie about to get promoted to girlfriend status?” Gu Wei clearly found this amusing, teasing her daughter.
“…” Gu Li gave her mother a complicated look. “Mom thinks besties are just girlfriend candidates?”
“I never said that. It’s just how things are in your particular case.” Gu Wei deftly cut a small piece of steak with her knife and fork.
“Does Mom have a bestie?”
“Indeed. A rather interesting little Alpha.” Gu Wei’s smile brightened considerably. “Conversations with her are quite enjoyable.”
Seems Ji Bai isn’t disliked by her crush… Gu Wei rarely smiled this warmly.
The business-suited matriarch maintained her put-together appearance even at home, black work attire perfectly arranged. Apart from seeing her vulnerable side during personal crises, nothing seemed to faze this strong woman. Yet this was the same Gu Wei who’d fallen for her vampire father.
Gu Li rubbed her chin, recalling memories of her vampire father’s appearance and personality.
Dinner didn’t last much longer.
“Alright, I need to return to work. Be good at home.” The corporate powerhouse waved goodbye, leaving Gu Li with her retreating figure heading back toward Gu Corporation.
Meanwhile, Ji Bai received a carefully crafted text message, concise yet useful: Try strong Omega/weak Alpha dynamic. Know how to act cute? Not helping you chase anyone, you’re on your own 🙂
Gu Li put away her phone and muttered quietly, “This makes it seem like I’m selling out Mom just to get Granny Jiang a better compensation house.”
She flopped onto the bed, burying her face in a pillow.
Ji Bai was a decent person with a good family background. If they genuinely liked each other, she could reluctantly accept her as her A-mom.
After all, Gu Wei always worked late into the night and never let her stay up to pick her up. With Ji Bai around, at least she’d have someone to keep her company.
“How’s it going? Can you freely control your fangs now?” Uncle Ji asked with concern. He hadn’t expected Gu Li to struggle with marking, especially since her gland tests always came back fine.
Moreover, when treating Gu Li’s father, he’d never heard of any issues with marking, otherwise, Gu Li wouldn’t have been born in the first place.
“No,” Gu Li shook her head. She had been exercising and taking her medication on schedule, but that half-mark in the isolation room seemed to be her peak performance. Since then, her fangs only extended during her rut when she needed to feed. Other times, it was impossible, let alone during a proper marking.
How frustrating.
“That incident in the isolation room couldn’t have been a coincidence. Maybe we should ask President Gu about your father’s condition back then,” Specialist Ji finally decided to call Gu Wei. Perhaps there were details only known between spouses that hadn’t been disclosed before.
“Hello?” Gu Wei’s groggy voice came through the phone.
Specialist Ji blinked at the number, confirming it was indeed Gu Wei’s before exchanging a surprised glance with Gu Li.
It was rare for Gu Wei to still be in bed this late.
“Marking? We only did a deep mark once, and then bam, hit the jackpot. After that, his health wasn’t great, so we didn’t do much else. If there was anything odd about that time… he said he’d been busy preparing a surprise for me and forgot to take his meds,” Gu Wei mumbled, her voice still thick with sleep.
The call was on speaker, and hearing this, Gu Li suddenly realized something.
“Right, I missed my midday dose that day because I was out.”
“Could it be that your feeding function is equivalent to an alpha’s marking ability? The medication suppresses your bloodlust but also blocks your marking capability.” Specialist Ji quickly jotted down notes and flipped through some research materials. “In that case, since the alpha pheromone concentration hasn’t dropped, it shouldn’t be an issue. Let’s not worry about it for now. Continue with the treatment, it should take about six months to cure the condition. Then we’ll stop the meds and see if marking works.”
“Okay,” Gu Li nodded.
Only then did Specialist Ji remember to bid Gu Wei goodbye. “That’s all for now. By the way, did your company work late last night? Ji Bai didn’t come home.”
There was a pause on the other end before Gu Wei turned her head slightly, glancing at the disheveled alpha lying beside her on the executive office’s rest sofa.
The alpha beside her had disheveled hair, swollen red lips, and eyes puffy from crying, even now in sleep, she still subconsciously whimpered occasionally, making her recall last night’s absurd events.
Gu Wei rubbed her aching temples and said helplessly, “Yeah, she was working overtime yesterday. She probably slept in the company lounge.”
