Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 23
Following the phone’s navigation deeper into the villa district, the most secluded one was Gu Li’s home.
This villa stood far apart from the others, isolated and alone.
Jiang Nian paused at the villa’s entrance, carefully smoothing out her attire before ringing the doorbell.
The one who answered was the Gu family’s butler. Having received instructions from the owner, he promptly invited her inside.
In the vast space, the butler led Jiang Nian toward the innermost room, its door tightly shut, not a sound escaping from within.
The moment the knock sounded, Gu Wei opened the door from inside.
“Jiang Nian,” Gu Wei greeted, pulling her in and guiding her to Gu Li’s bedside. The unconscious alpha lay with furrowed brows, tightly restrained by several straps on the bed. The sweat on her forehead betrayed her discomfort she seemed trapped in a nightmare, occasionally letting out muffled whimpers. The anesthetic hadn’t done much to ease her suffering.
Expert Ji sat on a chair by the bed, flipping through Gu Li’s medical records and test reports. When he looked up, he immediately noticed the slight change in the student before him compared to their last meeting. “Have you presented?”
“Yes, I’ve presented as an omega,” Jiang Nian replied hesitantly. Her worried gaze lingered on Gu Li as she asked cautiously, “What’s happening with Gu Li right now?”
She had never seen Gu Li in such a state. Ever since they’d met, Gu Li had always been a steadfast shield against the storm in her mind gentle and radiant.
Gu Li had never told her that this was how she looked during an episode.
Now, Gu Li appeared so fragile, so vulnerable, stirring an ache in Jiang Nian’s chest. She wanted to wipe the sweat from her brow and smooth the crease between her brows.
An alpha in rut couldn’t control the release of their pheromones. Even with a specialized suppressant patch, faint traces of alpha pheromones still lingered in the room.
The moment Jiang Nian drew near, the scent of lavender curled around her nose, and the memories of marking Gu Li the night before flooded her mind. The heat she had suppressed began to simmer once more, flushing her cheeks with warmth.
“Are you still in heat? Did you two mark each other?”
As she stepped closer to Expert Ji, the pheromones leaking from her suppressant patch sweetened the faint floral scent in the room. The alpha on the bed, who had been still, stirred again, restless. The bite guard between her teeth creaked under the pressure.
Clearly, she had been provoked once more. Expert Ji hurriedly pulled Jiang Nian out of the room, pointing at the excessive omega pheromone levels on Gu Li’s test results. “Did you mark her?”
Being questioned in front of Gu Li’s mother about whether she had marked her daughter sent Jiang Nian’s already chaotic thoughts already in disarray from Gu Li’s sudden change in attitude at school into further turmoil.
But she had bitten her. She had marked her. There was no denying it. She nodded.
“I went into heat right after presenting… and I marked Gu Li,” she admitted awkwardly, stealing a cautious glance at Gu Wei’s expression.
She feared the woman would resent her, blame her for hurting Gu Li.
“Most likely it’s because your pheromone compatibility is too high, and the concentration of your pheromones during differentiation was so intense that it directly triggered her into a sensitive period,” Specialist Ji proposed a reasonable hypothesis.
“Did this happen because I marked Gu Li?” Jiang Nian’s voice grew even quieter.
The physical disparity between an alpha and omega was vast there was no way Jiang Nian could have marked Gu Li without her consent. That was why neither Specialist Ji nor Gu Wei blamed her. Gu Li must have willingly accepted the mark, though no one knew what had happened afterward to make her develop such a death wish.
“This condition has nothing to do with you. Gu Li has always been like this during her sensitive periods, it’s just…” Gu Wei walked over and patted her head. Though Gu Li had never admitted it, Gu Wei could tell from countless small details how much she valued Jiang Nian. She had been wondering which omega had marked Gu Li, and now that she knew it was Jiang Nian, she actually felt relieved. “Did Gu Li do anything excessive to you?”
She had seen how her husband acted when he lost control. Few could remain rational under such intense suffering. For Gu Li in that state, the antidote to ease her pain was right in front of her it was hard to imagine she hadn’t done something to Jiang Nian in her delirium. Gu Wei’s gaze swept over Jiang Nian’s elbows, palms, then moved to her fair neck, finally spotting two small puncture wounds on the side, the surrounding skin already bruised.
“Did she bite you?” This kind of bite was different from marking, but everyone present understood.
Jiang Nian froze for a moment before slowly nodding.
“Was it because she couldn’t control herself, leading to self-loathing, which then weakened her will to live and intensified her suffering?” Specialist Ji jotted down this theory, then tapped the pen against the paper thoughtfully.
Recalling what Gu Li’s mother had said on the way, that only her blood could help Gu Li’s condition and the strange detachment she had felt last night when Gu Li clamped down on her neck, Jiang Nian steadied her breathing and exhaled deeply.
Was Gu Li… blaming herself?
Jiang Nian clenched her fists lightly, watching as the blood bag filled. She had already lost a significant amount of blood yesterday, leaving her dizzy now. Specialist Ji swiftly removed the needle and advised her to rest.
She lay down in the guest room of Gu Li’s house and drifted into an exhausted sleep.
“Do you like me?” Jiang Nian heard her own voice echo.
“No.” The voice was painfully familiar. The figure before her gradually came into focus, those eyes, no longer gentle, instead flickering with evasion. The person ignored her outstretched arms asking for a hug and walked past her.
“Can you hold me?” Jiang Nian heard herself ask again, repeating the gesture she had made countless times.
The departing figure paused. When she turned around, it was unmistakably Gu Li’s face. “Jiang Nian, alphas and omegas are different. This kind of behavior is too ambiguous.”
“Gu Li, are you afraid you’ll drain me dry?” This time, only Jiang Nian remained, speaking into the darkness alone.
The person didn’t appear. Only silence and darkness responded to her. Jiang Nian slowly opened her eyes to see an unfamiliar ceiling. Right, it was just a dream, a dream that inexplicately replayed both her worst fears and the questions she most wanted to ask Gu Li now.
Gu Wei kept Jiang Nian for dinner at home. Gu Li still hadn’t woken up, having been given the special medicine, Jiang Nian’s blood. The physical pain had eased somewhat. It was rare for President Gu to eat at home, yet here she was sharing a meal with Jiang Nian.
Expert Ji preferred dining alone, so Gu Wei had food sent to her room. The specialist took this illness extremely seriously, practically standing guard over Gu Li’s condition every moment.
Gu Wei had ordered dishes rich in blood-nourishing ingredients, constantly serving Jiang Nian portions as if worried she couldn’t replenish herself. Jiang Nian’s small bowl became a miniature mountain of various dishes.
How had this child become so thin? Still in her estrus cycle too, with those red-rimmed eyes…
Looking at the somewhat frail omega before her, Gu Wei couldn’t resist adding several more pieces of meat to her plate.
“Auntie, that’s enough. I can’t eat anymore,” Jiang Nian protested softly, hands covering her slightly bloated stomach.
“Thank you for your help, Jiang Nian.” Gu Wei stirred her rice absently with chopsticks. “What I said earlier about buying your blood that was spoken in haste. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“I didn’t, Auntie,” Jiang Nian quickly replied.
“You’re such a good child. Gu Li is fortunate to have you. If she ever mistreats you, tell me, I’ll set her straight.” Having seen through her daughter’s feelings earlier than Gu Li herself, Gu Wei already regarded them as a couple in her mind, now looking at Jiang Nian with the appraising eyes of a mother inspecting her omega daughter-in-law.
“Auntie, we’re not—” Jiang Nian flushed with embarrassment, though she’d already marked the other’s daughter without any formal relationship established between them.
The timely arrival of the butler interrupted their derailed conversation. Whispering something in Gu Wei’s ear, he prompted her to abruptly rise from the table and hurry toward the bedroom.
Jiang Nian instantly understood what was happening. Setting down her bowl, she followed, only to freeze mid-step when Gu Wei opened the door.
“Jiang Nian, don’t come in.”
It was Gu Li. Her voice was terribly hoarse, so weak it was barely audible, yet crystal clear to Jiang Nian’s ears.
She was stopping her. Jiang Nian remained at the threshold, peering inside where only a sliver of Gu Li’s arm was visible behind Gu Wei’s figure.
She wanted to shift position, to see if Gu Li’s complexion had improved, if she was still in pain but Gu Li laboriously turned her entire body away.
That frail voice spoke again: “Please… don’t come near me.”
It carried the faintest tremor of tears. An alpha stripped bare, begging an omega not to approach. The venomous vampire, now fully aware that Jiang Nian knew everything, was utterly shattered.
Still fragile from being broken by pain, the mere sight of Jiang Nian would inevitably drag her back to last night’s madness that terrifying version of herself. The word “monster” amplified endlessly in her mind, flashing behind her eyes, ringing in her ears.
She was even lingering on the taste of Jiang Nian’s blood in her mouth, and the mere thought of it drove her to utter despair.
Jiang Nian could clearly see her trembling shoulders turned away from him. The impulse to go in and check on her was instantly suppressed. No wonder his question in the dream had gone unanswered deep down, he must have already known.
Gu Li was truly terrified, so much so that she wanted to flee.
