Transmigrated as the Short-Lived White Moonlight, I Ended Up Happily Ever After With the Female Lead - Chapter 10
The next morning, Ji Yan’an was still lying in bed, acting spoilt, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. She was awake, but unwilling to move. Little Le Yan, however, was keenly aware that today was the day they were entering the palace, so she stood by the door early, waiting to help Ji Yan’an wash and dress.
“Is she still not up?” Song Yi, already dressed in the clothes presented by Proprietor Zheng, asked as she stood beside Le Yan. Le Yan held the wooden basin and nodded. If Ji Yan’an wasn’t up, who would dare go in and call her? Although the young lady’s temper had improved lately, she had always had a morning temper. One time, Jinxi woke her up, and Ji Yan’an ignored Jinxi for the entire day.
Le Yan shivered just recalling the sight of the sulking Ji Yan’an that day, so she wouldn’t call Ji Yan’an for all the world.
Song Yi didn’t press the matter. She took the soft cloth from Le Yan’s hand, dipped it in water, wrung it out, and walked towards the room.
The room was quiet. Only the sound of charcoal burning in the brazier and a very light breathing sound could be heard.
Song Yi walked soundlessly to Ji Yan’an’s bedside and saw that the person on the bed was lying on her side. Her thin inner garment was slightly wrinkled; it was clear she was not a peaceful sleeper. From this angle, Song Yi could see Ji Yan’an’s slightly open eyes. Song Yi understood.
She placed the moistened soft cloth on Ji Yan’an’s face, eliciting a soft gasp. Ji Yan’an was startled, and a wave of frustration was building up, ready to sit up and flare up, but then her eyes met an enchanting face.
“Time to enter the palace,” Song Yi said airily, standing to one side to watch her. The immediate fire of anger in Ji Yan’an instantly died down. She just pouted slightly, slowly put on her shoes, her face full of grievance.
Seeing her change her shoes, Song Yi turned and opened the door, signaling Le Yan and the others to come in and attend to her. Upon receiving the command, Le Yan and the others immediately filed in. Some carried water, others helped her change; though all were young, their movements were orderly, clearly indicating strict training.
After half an hour of bustling, the bright and beautiful Ji Yan’an reappeared before everyone. Her light blue dress, which greatly complemented her skin, hung obediently, and only the accompanying buyao (hair ornament) in her hair swung slightly. Song Yi was looking at Ji Yan’an, and Ji Yan’an was also looking at her.
Song Yi had indeed worn the goose-yellow aoxun (jacket and skirt) they had chosen together, which added a touch of cuteness and sweetness to the normally cool and reserved Song Yi. Ji Yan’an vaguely remembered the first time she saw Song Yi after transmigrating; Song Yi was wearing a tattered goose-yellow long dress. Although the clothes were not new, it was love at first sight.
Since then, Ji Yan’an was convinced that Song Yi looked best in this color, and sure enough, she was right.
“You look so beautiful,” Ji Yan’an couldn’t help but say. Suddenly realizing Song Yi was staring at her, Ji Yan’an quickly lowered her head, too embarrassed to look at her.
“You too,” Song Yi’s voice was extremely soft, so soft that Ji Yan’an couldn’t quite hear it clearly. She curved her eyes and pretended not to have heard: “What? Who did you say was beautiful just now?” The naturally restless Ji Yan’an even trotted over to Song Yi, her soft little ear almost touching Song Yi’s face.
Song Yi knew she had heard, her eyes sparkling, but she remained silent. Ji Yan’an had been standing on tiptoe to get closer. When the other person stopped talking, she was about to turn away but lost her balance and stumbled right into Song Yi. Ji Yan’an originally thought Song Yi would push her away and was prepared to fall to the ground, but the pain never came.
“Huh?” Ji Yan’an carefully opened her eyes and found herself in a warm embrace. Song Yi… was actually… hugging her!
Before Ji Yan’an could react to the action, she heard Song Yi say helplessly: “We’re going into the palace soon. Do you want to fall and bruise your face?” What she said was logical, but the warm breath she exhaled lightly brushed against Ji Yan’an’s neck like a soft feather, causing Ji Yan’an’s face to flush.
“Damn it! Am I single for so long that being hugged by a beauty can make me blush?!” Ji Yan’an quickly got up, secretly chastising herself.
Song Yi felt a sudden absence of the soft person in her arms and felt slightly unaccustomed to it. After a moment, she let her hands fall to her sides, the coolness returning to her eyes, as if the person who had just embraced someone out of helplessness was not her.
Having dawdled for so long, there was no time for breakfast, so Madam Ji ordered Jinxi to bring some pastries for Ji Yan’an to snack on.
It had snowed heavily last night, and there was some thin ice on the road. The carriage dared not go fast, so it proceeded slowly down the street.
Ji Yan’an had never been in a carriage before. At first, she was curious, looking around the carriage’s furnishings like a country bumpkin, but gradually, she became bored, her mind only filled with the memories of her interaction with Song Yi this morning.
As she was thinking, she quietly smiled. Le Yan sat beside her, holding the plate of pastries. Although she didn’t know what Ji Yan’an was smiling about, Le Yan was happy just seeing her smile.
“Where is Song Yi?” Ji Yan’an felt a sudden longing for her absence. Even if she couldn’t chat with the beauty, just looking at Song Yi could make her happy. Ji Yan’an couldn’t understand why the male protagonist had to use Ji Yan’an as his “white moonlight” unattainable love.
Le Yan pondered for a moment, lifted the carriage curtain, and pointed outside: “Miss, Miss Song is walking beside the carriage.”
Ji Yan’an was displeased when she heard this. Le Yan could sit in the carriage like herself, and the Ji Residence was not some stingy household; how could they not afford one extra carriage?
“Is there no spare carriage?” Ji Yan’an asked in a deep voice.
Le Yan could see that Ji Yan’an’s expression was amiss again. She put down the pastry plate and seriously thought back. After a moment of recollection, she said: “Originally there was, but Third Miss and Third Concubine are going to the temple to pray for blessings today, and the Master and Eldest Young Master went to court, so the carriages in the residence are indeed insufficient.”
The Third Miss Le Yan mentioned was Ji Tong’an. After Ji Yan’an realized this, she grew angry again.
The young girl propped her chin in her hand and thought for a while. This morning, before she left, she saw two carriages parked at the door. She was wondering why, and it turned out that Ji Tong’an and the Third Concubine were using them.
“Just a concubine’s daughter and a concubine, and their trip to pray is more important than entering the palace?” Ji Yan’an thought this but dared not say it aloud. She looked at Le Yan for a long time, then sweetly coaxed: “My dear Le Yan Can you go outside and follow us on foot, and let Miss Song come up and talk to me?”
Le Yan nodded enthusiastically. Seeing her so compliant, Ji Yan’an smiled brightly.
“Stop!” Ji Yan’an commanded. The carriage stopped instantly. Under Ji Yan’an’s profuse thanks, Le Yan got off the carriage.
It wasn’t really cold outside, but Song Yi’s body was naturally sensitive to the cold due to years of mistreatment from the concubines and concubine’s daughters, who made her wash clothes even in the middle of winter. These abuses made Song Yi particularly afraid of the cold.
“Miss Song!” Le Yan ran over, smiling. She had never expected to be treated with such respect by her mistress. Even though she had to get out of the carriage and brave the cold outside, Le Yan was happy.
Song Yi was surprised to hear someone call her and turned her head. Her enchanting face stunned Le Yan . After a moment of being dazed, she managed to speak: “Miss asked you to get into the carriage.”
