- Chapter 88 - Can We Face It Together?
Clarifying everything that quickly was impossible. The next morning, just as Qi Siyu woke up, the system immediately repeated its original warning to her:
“What if the female lead can’t handle the fact she’s only a character in a novel? The entire world could collapse—and we’d have to start over!”
Qi Siyu didn’t dare take that risk. She needed a new explanation—and to tell Gu Qing why she’d suddenly changed overnight.
Gah! Why hadn’t the damn system told her earlier? Then last night could’ve been sweet between her and Gu Qing…
Feeling Qi Siyu’s simmering anger, the system dared not speak further—it feared she’d demand more energy.
Torn between logic and emotion, Qi Siyu hadn’t come up with what to say yet when someone knocked on the door.
Could it be Gu Qing?
She rubbed her face, glancing in the mirror to see her bedhead and pale complexion—it looked awful!
“Just a minute!” In under a minute, she washed her face, combed her hair, and moisturized.
She actually did it!
She opened the door—and deflated. “Why is it you?”
Su Ningqing raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Who did you think it was?”
“What are you doing at my door this early?” Qi Siyu unclenched the doorknob, displeased.
Su Ningqing dropped her bag, strode in, and perched on the chair before Qi Siyu. “What happened? Did your wife kick you out again? The front desk just called me saying you booked another room.”
Qi Siyu: ……
She’d totally forgotten that might happen.
“No, it’s not true!” Qi Siyu replied.
Su Ningqing narrowed her eyes. “This time you didn’t deny that Gu Qing is your wife.” Like she’d discovered a secret.
Really? Qi Siyu thought. “Why do you care so much? Just take care of your own wife!”
“Heh,” Su Ningqing chuckled and crossed her legs, chin tilted in pride. “My wife is definitely well taken care of by me.”
Why even ask this? Qi Siyu thought. “Is that all you came for?”
“Not quite. I have two more things: First, my wife and I are going on our honeymoon. I’m counting on you for the show’s publicity.”
Qi Siyu’s mouth twitched. An utterly unambitious person—but fine, she had no objection. “And second?”
“Yesterday’s fireworks were custom by Gu Qing. The Ferris wheel—her arrangement too.” After speaking, Su Ningqing stood, eager to return to her soft, cozy bed and avoid wasting time here.
Qi Siyu froze. Her immediate thought: Good thing I actually watched those fireworks carefully yesterday.
Then a wave of sadness rushed through her—how much of Gu Qing’s thoughtfulness had she wasted by overthinking?
Blaming herself for not understanding everything before jumping to conclusions.
Qi Siyu quickly redressed and made herself look presentable before heading to see Gu Qing.
Before she could knock, the door swung open.
Gu Qing stood there, fully dressed and carrying a bag. “Something came up with my mother. I have to go back immediately. I’m sorry.”
“Oh? Actually, I should say I’m sorry,” Qi Siyu said, hurrying to accompany her. “Let’s go. Do you know what’s wrong?”
They paused their emotional topics—planning to return to them later, once everything was settled.
“It seems like gland poisoning—I need to donate my gland marrow,” Gu Qing said with a hint of urgency. Though they’d only recently reconciled, Gu Qing sensed Qi Siyu’s sincerity and treated her with equal warmth.
“I’ll arrange a private jet—we’ll leave immediately.” Even if Song Xinglin wasn’t very friendly, for Gu Qing, family was everything and her mother couldn’t be ignored.
The plane was arranged swiftly. What would have taken nearly a full day was compressed into eight hours via a supersonic flight.
At the airport, the Gu family waited anxiously. Once Gu Qing and her companions landed, they went straight to the hospital.
Gu Qing went in for tests while Qi Siyu and others waited in the hallway with Gu Junsi.
Qi Siyu glanced at her draw count and calmed herself—if modern medicine couldn’t solve this, she hoped the system could.
From that perspective, Qi Siyu was thankful the system existed—if it’d been someone else draining her energy, she wouldn’t stand for it.
“Uncle, could you tell me what’s happening?” Qi Siyu asked gently.
Gu Junsi’s voice was hoarse, grief and fatigue etched in his eyes. “When Qing had that incident, investigators found it was Gu Yulong’s doing. Xinglin confronted her—she held a grudge and injected her with an experimental drug still in testing. It destroyed her glands.”
“Right now, only Qing’s gland marrow can temporarily sustain Xinglin’s gland function.”
In an ABO-based world, those with gland atrophy are chronically ill with short lifespans. Song Xinglin’s case was worse—without new marrow fluid, she might not survive the month.
Marrow compatibility between relatives is highest, but even with Gu Qing, one person wasn’t enough. Gu Junsi was still looking for other matching donors.
A heavy silence fell in the corridor. Gu Yulong had destroyed what she couldn’t have.
Qi Siyu didn’t ask further. Instead, she summoned the system: “What can solve this—just tell me how much energy and don’t waste words.”
The system gulped. Feeling guilty, it swallowed its initial reaction. “Gland Marrow Heart … Xinglin’s glands are completely ruined. Recovery requires new growth. The item needs 80 draws to request from the main system. No stock on hand yet.”
“Understood.” Qi Siyu didn’t care whether the system took a cut. As long as it could fix this—“Do it as soon as possible.”
“Yes, Host, I’ll try my best!” The system was still very motivated when energy was on the line.
From tests to extracting gland marrow took two hours total.
Qi Siyu waited at first, pacing the hallway until her footsteps echoed. When exhausted, she sat and tried to calm her anxiety by chatting with others:
“This surgery shouldn’t be dangerous, right?”
“Why is it taking so long? Are these doctors inexperienced?”
“Any side effects after extraction? What kind of recovery does Gu Qing need?”
She rambled until the OR doors finally opened.
Gu Qing and Song Xinglin were wheeled out.
Gu Junsi and Qi Siyu split to check on each.
“Gu Qing! How are you? What happened?” Qi Siyu asked as she noticed Gu Qing’s pale, bloodless face.
She first spoke in Chinese—seeing the doctor ruffle his brows cluelessly, she switched to English and continued.
“The anesthesia hasn’t fully worn off. She should wake in three to four hours. You can start preparing now.” The doctor called the nurse and handed Qi Siyu a list. He then asked, “Does she have an Alpha?”
“Yes—me.” Qi Siyu quickly replied.
“Stimulating her glands with moderate Alpha pheromone can promote marrow regeneration, but it must be done carefully.” The doctor cautioned.
“How do I know the right level?” Qi Siyu asked.
“Use her as a guide. If she feels discomfort, stop immediately.” The doctor responded.
Qi Siyu thanked him, then followed the nurse to the ward, photographing the list and sending it to Gu Xiaoling for help.
Gu Xiaoling might take better care of Gu Qing, she thought.
It turned out Gu Junsi had arranged independent wards—Gu Qing in one, Xinglin next door. He’d prepared all necessary materials. Gu Xiaoling borrowed the kitchen to cook, and Qi Siyu had little else to do.
She sat by the bedside, gently holding Gu Qing’s cold hand.
It felt reminiscent of their first meeting—something of a whirl of memory.
Back then, when Gu Qing opened her eyes, the first reaction was shock and revulsion.
Now? Gu Qing had confessed. Qi Siyu felt she had nothing worthy of being confessed to by someone like Gu Qing.
She promised herself: she would fight to break this cycle. When this world’s journey ended, they’d be reborn together—how could that be loss?
Back at home, she’d continue her filming plans. Maybe Gu Qing would lend her face to star in her indie web series.
Gu Qing playing “Gu Qing”? That’d be hilarious—she bet it’d be amazing.
Time passed quietly. Then Gu Qing slowly opened her eyes.
Her smokey gray pupils were still hazy, as if covered by mist, but the joy in her eyes wasn’t hidden.
Qi Siyu smiled.
“You’re awake. Hungry? You should eat something before you rest again.”
The trip had let her sleep vanish—she must be exhausted, and then they drained her marrow. She wouldn’t be comfortable, that was for sure.
Gu Qing squeezed Siyu’s hand lightly—feather-soft, just a gentle ache.
“I have no strength.”
“I’ll feed you.” Qi Siyu raised the head of the bed, letting Gu Qing sit.
She opened a thermos containing vegetable and lean-meat congee. The smell was comforting.
“Ah, open your mouth.” Qi Siyu teased like coaxing a toddler—and laughed at herself.
A flicker of a smile appeared in Gu Qing’s eyes. She sipped a spoon of porridge.
Just as Qi Siyu brought the second spoon to her lips, her own stomach rumbled loudly.
Gu Qing’s eyes shone with even more warmth—like summer sunshine melting a millennia-old glacier, beautiful and radiant.
Qi Siyu’s face turned bright red.
“I’m not just being greedy!”
“No,” Gu Qing said calmly, playful. “You’re drooling because I’m irresistible food.”
Qi Siyu looked like a red apple. “I I’m not, I… I’m just hungry.”
“Let’s eat together.” Gu Qing ended the teasing. “Eat quickly before it cools.”
Under Gu Qing’s watchful eyes, Qi Siyu drank carefully—one spoon for each of them—and shared most of the congee.
“I’m full.” Gu Qing gave up the rest.
Qi Siyu raised the bowl, about to finish it all herself.
“Haha, gotcha!” Gu Xiaoling burst in, catching them. “What do you expect, fighting with a patient over food?”
Qi Siyu rolled her eyes. “I’ll complain—she snuck a taste in the kitchen and didn’t give me any!”
“I was just checking the seasoning!” Gu Xiaoling defended herself. “Besides, I came to bring food.” She waved the bag triumphantly.
Qi Siyu glared at Gu Qing. “She’s bullying me.”
Gu Xiaoling looked shocked. “You’re so unfair—no chivalry!”
Gu Qing leaned back and watched them bicker, the atmosphere warm and cozy like a family.
They pulled Gu Qing into the playful argument, and she soothed them gently.
Soon, Gu Junsi returned.
“Sounds lively in here. Qing, how are you feeling?”
“I’m fine. No discomfort.” If not for her still-pale face, that calm answer would surely have convinced them all.
“That’s good. Your mother’s vitals have stabilized too. You don’t need to worry.” Gu Junsi forced a faint smile, then left quietly.
Gu Xiaoling left the rest of the meal for Qi Siyu. “Lu-jie and I will eat in the kitchen.”
Now she really trusted Qi Siyu. Before, she’d never allow her to be alone with “Gu-jie.”
Once they were alone again, the atmosphere turned a bit heavy.
“Host, the Gland Marrow Heart is back in your backpack. You can use it anytime. Your draw count has been deducted.” The system’s voice gave Qi Siyu a sudden surge of energy.
Qi Siyu straightened.
“Don’t worry about her mother. I can get the medicine to heal her.”
She expected Gu Qing to ask where the medicine came from—but instead, Gu Qing simply nodded. “That’s good.”
“I believe you can heal her—just like you did with my leg and face, right?”
Though still weak, Gu Qing reached out and held Qi Siyu’s hand.
Qi Siyu gently held back.
“Yeah. I have that kind of special power.”
“Earlier, I said we weren’t meant to be—I was afraid something might happen to me. What if I…”
Gu Qing placed a fingertip gently against Qi Siyu’s lips.
“Don’t say the unlucky things.”
“No matter what comes… can we face it together?”
