- Chapter 86 - We’re Not Meant to Be
Gu Qing’s voice was clear and resolute.
It felt like an earthquake erupted in Qi Siyu’s mind, leaving her dizzy. Did Gu Qing just say… she liked her?
How could that be possible? Gu Qing was supposed to be the strong, solitary protagonist, destined to be alone for life.
Of course, Qi Siyu had fantasized, during those quiet, sleepless nights, about confessing her feelings to Gu Qing—imagining Gu Qing reluctantly agreeing.
But now, in real life, it was Gu Qing confessing to her.
A wave of overwhelming joy surged in Qi Siyu’s chest—only to be immediately overtaken by panic and fear.
The closer she got to Gu Qing, the closer she was to the possibility of resurrecting and returning home.
But when that day finally came… what choice would she make?
She was a coward. She didn’t even dare to imagine it—how could she allow herself to fall into that terrifying abyss?
Love wasn’t a necessity in Gu Qing’s life.
Having made up her mind, Qi Siyu finally emerged from her stunned state.
“What did you say?” she forced a stiff smile. “Did I mishear you? Happy birthday! Come on, let’s go—everyone’s waiting for us downstairs.”
“You can hear my stomach growling—I’m starving after all that playing around.”
Gu Qing frowned. She had simulated this scenario countless times in her head—her confessing, Qi Siyu’s various reactions. But none of them matched what was happening now. None were as cruel and cold as this.
She had been rejected. Her feelings had been rejected.
But why?
Love and a cough—both are hard to hide. Gu Qing was certain that Qi Siyu liked her.
Her mind flooded with chaotic memories—Qi Siyu carefully tending to her gland, chasing after her until she coughed up blood, holding green roses by the sea, begging for kisses when drunk…
She grabbed Qi Siyu’s wrist just as she was about to leave. Her palm was clammy with sweat, and her fingertips trembled uncontrollably. Both of them were emotionally unsettled.
Gu Qing’s voice quivered, “Give me a reason. Why are you rejecting me?”
She truly couldn’t understand it. Qi Siyu had chosen her as the mission target. She was the one who treated Gu Qing kindly first, the one constantly radiating affection toward her.
Qi Siyu’s eyes were filled with torment, conflict, and pain. She didn’t dare meet Gu Qing’s gaze, afraid she’d see through her. With her head lowered and eyes half-lidded, she spoke—not just to Gu Qing, but to herself:
“We’re Not Meant to Be.”
With that, she gently brushed off Gu Qing’s hand and fled downstairs as if escaping.
Gu Qing stared quietly at Qi Siyu’s retreating figure. She had to face reality—Qi Siyu had rejected her.
Above her was the boundless sky, beneath her the vast earth. Standing up high should have made her feel free and open-hearted, but Gu Qing felt as if her heart were being crushed—it hurt so much, she could barely breathe.
She stood there in the breeze for several minutes before heading down.
Qi Siyu was leaning against the doorframe, her entire posture radiating defeat.
After running off, she had calmed down. Escaping wasn’t the answer. And today was Gu Qing’s birthday—birthdays were supposed to be happy!
Even though something had gone wrong, the rest of the night still had to go on.
Hearing footsteps, Qi Siyu slapped her cheeks and forced a smile before turning around—only to see Gu Qing walk past her without so much as a glance.
Her heart clenched. The smile crumbled from her face, and her shoulders slumped.
Could they still even be friends after this?
They walked into the dining area—Gu Qing leading, Qi Siyu following. She forced another smile.
Everyone was having fun tonight. She couldn’t let her mistake ruin the mood.
Qi Siyu stole a glance at Gu Qing. Fortunately, Gu Qing always had that aloof expression—no one would notice anything wrong.
The two of them were like parents who had just fought—pretending everything was fine in front of their kids to keep the peace.
After dinner, cake, and singing the birthday song, it was time for the final activity—riding the Ferris wheel.
Gu Qing had planned a firework show. Originally, the plan was to confess first, then hold Qi Siyu in her arms as they watched the fireworks together.
But the confession had come early—and been rejected. Gu Qing had thought of skipping this part, but Su Ningqing brought it up, saying it was time for the Ferris wheel.
Everyone got up, so Gu Qing didn’t stop them.
Qi Siyu trailed behind. This part wasn’t her idea, so it must’ve been Gu Qing’s.
By the time she reached the Ferris wheel, Gu Xiaoling had already paired everyone up—naturally, Qi Siyu and Gu Qing were assigned to the same cabin.
As everyone boarded, only Qi Siyu and Gu Qing were left.
The ride would last twenty minutes. Twenty minutes alone in an enclosed space?
“You go ahead. My stomach feels a little off—I need to use the restroom,” Qi Siyu said awkwardly.
Gu Qing gave a quiet nod. “Okay.”
Qi Siyu opened her mouth but couldn’t find the words.
After standing there for a moment, the cabin door opened. She quickly turned and went to find a restroom.
To better enjoy the upcoming fireworks, most of the amusement park’s lights had been turned off. But the moonlight was beautiful and lit up the path under her feet.
Qi Siyu walked a bit, then sat on the edge of a flowerbed and looked up at the Ferris wheel.
She could easily pick out which cabin Gu Qing was in.
“System, do you think Gu Qing could come back to the real world with me?” Qi Siyu whispered.
“But she has family and friends here. I can’t even bear to leave mine—how could I ask her to give everything up for me?”
“Host! Why didn’t you just say yes?!” The system was frantic. It had been rooting for them the whole time—wanting them to fall head over heels in love so it could absorb energy.
“Theoretically it’s possible… but extremely difficult,” the system spoke rapidly.
“Forget everything else—if you reject her now, you’ll both be miserable for life. If you accept, at least you get a few happy years!”
“Ugh, what ‘miserable for life’? Please, this isn’t some tragic romance.” Qi Siyu scoffed, bitterly.
“Gu Qing only likes me because she’s temporarily blinded. It’s only been a few months—what deep love could there be?”
She was harsh—even to herself. Better a short pain now than prolonged suffering later.
“Soon enough, she’ll realize I’m just a selfish, petty person not worth loving.”
The system went silent, internally crumbling. So much for daily hand-holding energy bonuses.
Just a while ago, it had been dreaming of power-ups and luxury. Now it was back to minimum wage emotional labor.
Then—
Bang.
Bang, bang.
Bang.
Fireworks exploded above. Qi Siyu looked up to see vibrant bursts of flame blooming like roses in the sky.
White sparks traced across the velvet night, turning the sky into a kaleidoscope of color—briefly transforming it into a glittering daytime.
The dazzling fireworks reflected in Qi Siyu’s eyes, making them shine like a galaxy.
If she had said yes, they’d be up on the Ferris wheel right now, sweetly snuggled together, watching this show side by side.
When the last firework faded, she blinked away the sting in her eyes—but the tear still slipped down, landing silently on the back of her pale hand.
If only she could be a little more selfish.
As Qi Siyu watched the fireworks, Gu Qing—on the Ferris wheel—watched her.
Using a telescope meant for sightseeing, she could see every expression on Qi Siyu’s face with perfect clarity.
Even if she was hurting, Gu Qing wouldn’t allow herself to wallow in sadness.
If Qi Siyu rejected her because they weren’t “right,” then she’d remove whatever made them incompatible.
And that so-called “system” would be her breakthrough point.
Since they were staying overnight at the amusement park hotel, Su Ningqing had booked rooms. Thinking of Gu Qing and Qi Siyu as a couple, she naturally assigned them to the same room.
Gao Li and Gu Xiaoling, who knew about the confession plan, shot teasing glances at them. When they just stood frozen at the doorway, Gu Xiaoling gave them a shove and pushed them in.
Not wanting to embarrass Gu Qing in front of others, Qi Siyu let herself be pushed into the room.
As the door clicked shut behind her, her heart skipped a beat.
She licked her dry lips and murmured with her head down, “I’ll leave in a bit.”
They couldn’t be alone like this—she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from hugging Gu Qing.
“Mm,” Gu Qing responded coolly.
But the moment she gripped the bathroom doorknob, veins bulged from the strain, and the handle creaked under her grip.
Soon, the sound of running water filled the room. Curled up on the couch, Qi Siyu couldn’t help but glance up—only to see that the frosted glass of the bathroom had become transparent.
Under the shower stood Gu Qing, water cascading down her pale, curvaceous body…
Qi Siyu touched her nose. At least she didn’t get a nosebleed.
She averted her eyes, turned away, and changed her seat. No more peeking.
But the sound of the water taunted her, making her restless and fidgety.
And just then, the system chimed in:
“Host, if you had said yes, you could be in there together now—washing each other’s backs, shampooing each other’s hair…”
“Shut up!” Qi Siyu snapped, mortified. Because she had imagined it.
With her self-control failing, she grabbed her earbuds and put on music.
It didn’t help much. The headphones blocked out the noise, but not the thoughts.
“Qi Siyu, can you get me some clothes?” Gu Qing’s voice suddenly replaced the sound of water.
Qi Siyu swallowed hard, her voice dry. “Sure… one sec.”
She kept her head low the whole time—only to be met with Gu Qing’s bare feet.
Those elegant toes had once pressed against her thigh. Those delicate ankles had once been kissed and bitten by her.
She squeezed her eyes shut. “The floor’s cold. I’ll get you some slippers.”
“Thank you,” Gu Qing replied coolly.
“You’re welcome,” Qi Siyu answered, a bit wistfully. Was Gu Qing pulling away from her?
They stayed in the room together for nearly an hour. Gu Qing, after showering, busied herself opening gifts.
Qi Siyu’s nose tingled. She’d originally planned to explain the little naming details behind each gift—but now she could only watch from afar.
“I’m going out,” she said hoarsely, afraid she’d lose control if she stayed any longer.
“Okay. Be careful,” Gu Qing said, her eyes glued to Qi Siyu’s retreating back until the door closed.
She no longer felt like opening gifts.
Just be patient. Wait until midnight—then find the system.
She closed her eyes. But just ten minutes later, she stood up.
Downstairs, she requested Qi Siyu’s room key from the front desk.
She stood at the door and reached out mentally to the system:
“Let me know when she falls asleep.”
“You got it!” The system was ecstatic. There was hope again!
Gu Qing was taking action—and its energy supply might just be saved!
With the system’s reply, Gu Qing leaned against the door and crouched down.
Staying as close to Qi Siyu as possible, waiting for her to fall asleep.
On the other side of the door, Qi Siyu was sighing, lost in thought.
How could she make Gu Qing happy…
…while still keeping them only as friends?
