- Chapter 68 - Blood Is Thicker Than Water
The next morning, the four of them took the cable car down the mountain and headed straight to the hospital.
Lately, it seemed fate had tightly bound Gu Qing’s group to hospitals—no matter where they went, they somehow ended up visiting one.
Before entering the building, Gu Xiaoling handed each of them a small sachet. “I had a little Taoist make these last night—paid extra too. They’re to bless us so we don’t have to visit hospitals as much in the future.”
“Aw, I get one too? Thanks! But hey, maybe this trip will actually turn out to be a good thing,” Gu Lulu said cheerfully.
“Who says biological parents are always a good thing? You can be related by blood and still have no real connection—especially after all these years,” Gu Xiaoling muttered. “My parents are definitely biological, but all they ever do is drain me dry.”
“Xiaoling, don’t worry,” Gu Qing said calmly. She had long since passed the age of needing parental affection—and their attitude, good or bad, would never shake her peace of mind.
Gu Lulu, on the other hand, was full of confidence. She thumped her chest and assured her, “Trust me—my fourth uncle and aunt are amazing people. If Gu Qing really is their daughter, her life definitely wouldn’t be worse than it is now—probably much better!”
Qi Siyu silently agreed. In the original novel, Gu Qing’s biological parents were truly wonderful—it was a feel-good story, after all.
But since she wasn’t supposed to know any of this, she put on a concerned face and said, “Either way, I’m here. If they turn out to be terrible people, we can just walk away.”
“Alright. Let’s go in,” Gu Qing said with her usual composure.
They were visiting the private hospital owned by Qi Siyu’s maternal grandfather’s family. The blood sample was taken and sent for testing. Results would be available in half an hour.
They moved to a waiting room to pass the time.
Gu Qing scrolled through her phone leisurely. Beside her, Gu Xiaoling alternated between glancing at her own screen and sneaking peeks at Gu Qing.
Gu Lulu, meanwhile, was too restless to sit still. She kept pacing back and forth across the room, unable to stop moving.
Qi Siyu sat quietly next to Gu Qing with her eyes closed, trying to recall more details from the novel.
There hadn’t been much written about Gu Qing’s biological parents—just that they were rich, loved her deeply once they found her, and lavished her with money, funds, companies, and every possible resource…
It was gift-giving overload.
Despite all the material support, Gu Qing and her biological parents weren’t especially close. They video-called twice a month and met in person twice a year, each visit lasting about a week.
Unfortunately, the original author hadn’t elaborated on these parts, so Qi Siyu didn’t have much to work with.
“Time’s up!” Gu Lulu shouted excitedly. “Let’s go check the report!”
As they walked down the hall, they ran into a doctor holding the test results.
“The prediction indicates a first-degree cousin relationship,” the doctor said.
“YES!!” Gu Lulu practically exploded with joy, nearly tearing the ceiling off. Her eyes shimmered with tears. “It’s true—you really are my fourth uncle and aunt’s daughter!”
Gu Qing took the report, glanced at it briefly, then handed it to Qi Siyu. Her voice remained calm. “Alright. When there’s time, let’s arrange to meet them and do a full parent-child DNA test.”
“They’re really wonderful people,” Gu Lulu said, wiping away her tears. But seeing Gu Qing’s composed expression, she felt a pang of sadness—and an even deeper hatred for the adoptive parents who had made her this way.
It’s their fault Gu Qing has no expectations left for her own parents.
“I’ll reach out to them right now,” Gu Lulu said. “You should get some rest—running around this early in the morning must be exhausting.”
At this point, she naturally slipped into the role of a concerned older sister.
“Mm.” Gu Qing didn’t care what her biological parents were like. Instead, she turned to look at Qi Siyu.
Qi Siyu blinked cutely, confused by the sudden attention.
She was busy folding the test result paper into a perfect square. It was neat, crisp—clearly folded with care.
This wasn’t just a piece of paper. To her, it marked the beginning of Gu Qing’s happiness… and of her brilliant career.
Definitely worthy of framing and preserving.
“You still want to look at it?” Qi Siyu asked, guessing that might be why Gu Qing was staring.
“No. Let’s go home,” Gu Qing said, turning away. She didn’t know how much of a role Qi Siyu had played in Gu Lulu finding her.
“Okay.” Qi Siyu, still puzzled, spent the whole way back thinking about why Gu Qing had looked at her.
She couldn’t figure it out, so she eventually settled on: Maybe she just thought I looked good. With that, she stopped stressing.

When they got home, Gu Lulu made more than a dozen calls, but couldn’t reach her alcoholic father.
In the end, she had to call a girlfriend and ask her to drag her dad off the booze-soaked table.
Unfortunately, he was totally out of it—completely drunk and unresponsive.
“Still no luck getting through?” Qi Siyu asked. She’d been thinking the whole ride back, while Gu Lulu had spent it dialing nonstop.
“Cough… my dad’s kind of unreliable,” Gu Lulu admitted, sneaking a glance at Gu Qing. She felt so embarrassed—damn that useless Gu Fifth! He was ruining the Gu family’s image in Gu Qing’s mind!
“What I don’t get is… why didn’t you just call my Gu-jie’s biological parents directly?” Gu Xiaoling asked suspiciously, clearly sensing something was off.
“Well… I did try calling,” Gu Lulu said hurriedly. “But I couldn’t get through. Then I remembered—it’s around the ‘death anniversary’ the nanny made up. Around this time each year, my fourth uncle and aunt go to their private island for about two weeks. Only a few people can reach them.”
She was anxious to explain herself, afraid Gu Qing would misunderstand.
“Then let’s not disturb them. We can wait until they’re reachable,” Gu Qing said coolly. In truth, she didn’t like unexpected disruptions.
“It wouldn’t be a disturbance! They’ll be thrilled when they hear the news!” Gu Lulu insisted. “I’ll try someone else.”
Back at home, she planted herself on the couch and kept dialing.
While asking her friend to force-feed her dad some hangover soup, she herself reached out to a cousin—Gu Yulong, the daughter of her third uncle and her fourth aunt’s assistant. She might be able to get through.
The call connected quickly. After explaining everything, Gu Lulu asked Gu Yulong to help contact her fourth aunt.
Gu Yulong’s first reaction was suspicion. “Lulu, are you sure you haven’t been scammed? Didn’t the police confirm back then that Qing-mei was dead?”
“I already did a DNA test,” Gu Lulu replied. “I wouldn’t be going to them if I wasn’t sure.”
“Even if you’re biologically related, that doesn’t guarantee she’s my fourth uncle and aunt’s kid,” Gu Yulong pressed. “Fifth Uncle was quite the playboy in his youth. It could be his child.”
Gu Fifth was still unmarried, and Gu Lulu had six half-siblings from different mothers. They were all illegitimate children.
“My dad was in prison back then. It’s impossible,” Gu Lulu frowned. Something about Gu Yulong’s reaction felt off.
She’s rejecting every possibility. Is this just rational doubt—or emotional denial?
“If this turns out to be an illusion, your aunt will be even more heartbroken,” Gu Yulong insisted.
“And if it’s real, it could bring her a lifetime of happiness,” Gu Lulu snapped. “So—are you going to help or not?”
“Sorry, Lulu. I can’t help you with this,” Gu Yulong apologized, but her tone was firm.
“Tch. Afraid my aunt will stop caring about you once she finds her real daughter?” Gu Lulu retorted angrily before hanging up.
Seriously. It’s not like she’s the only way to get in touch.
Annoyed, Gu Lulu made a mental note to blacklist that woman in the future.
“What’s wrong?” Qi Siyu walked over with a glass of water, checking on the situation.
“Thanks.” Gu Lulu gulped down more than half the glass before launching into a rant.
“My dad’s dead drunk, right? I wanted to get the news to my fourth uncle and aunt as soon as possible, so I tried to have their assistant—my third uncle’s daughter—pass on the message. But she just kept making excuses. Totally unhelpful.”
“Let me tell you, my third uncle and aunt are pretty hopeless. Grandma even shipped them off to Africa. Gu Yulong’s been clinging to my fourth aunt since childhood, and my aunt helped her countless times. During that time, she was super hostile toward me. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s got her eye on my fourth uncle and aunt’s inheritance.”
Qi Siyu finally remembered.
That name—Gu Yulong—did appear in the original novel. Just a minor character. After Gu Qing was reunited with her biological parents, Gu Yulong tried to sabotage her. But Gu Qing caught wind of it, and her mother ended up sending Gu Yulong to Africa.
So… still a happy ending for everyone.
“Better keep your guard up around her,” Qi Siyu agreed.
“She’s such a fake. Always acting all pitiful and delicate.” Gu Lulu got increasingly worked up just thinking about Gu Yulong’s shady behavior. And since Qi Siyu was clearly listening, she vented non-stop.
Qi Siyu’s lips twitched. Wow, she really is a talker. Once she starts, there’s no stopping her.
Suddenly, Gu Lulu’s phone rang.
It was her dad.
The call connected, and the first thing she heard was a roar:
“Gu Lulu! This is how you treat your own father?!”
Then came the voice of her friend, “Hehe, Lulu, I force-fed your dad that super detox soup. Mission accomplished!”
“Great, thank you, my dear sister! I’ll treat you to a shopping spree when I’m back!” Gu Lulu showered her with gratitude.
Gu Wu, on the other end, rolled his eyes and shooed her friend out of the office.
“This serious, huh? There really is a blood connection?”
“Yup!!! Hurry up and contact my fourth uncle and aunt!” Gu Lulu was practically on fire with excitement.
“Whew…” Gu Wu exhaled deeply.
“Lulu, maybe you should wait. Let’s talk to them when they’re back.”
“Why?” Gu Lulu was confused.
“Well…” Gu Wu scratched his messy bedhead in frustration.
“Every year around this time, they go to the island. Not just to mourn, but because your fourth aunt… she has a mental breakdown during this period. She can’t be anywhere else right now.”
He paused, then added, “And watch your mouth. Don’t tell anyone about this.”
Qi Siyu, who had been quietly listening: …
This wasn’t in the original novel. Besides Gu Qing’s career arc, the book barely had any details at all.
“Ahem,” Gu Lulu glanced at Qi Siyu. “Of course, don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. But Dad, I still want to talk to my fourth uncle.”
“Alright, I’ll send you his number. But don’t say it came from me.” Gu Wu hung up, sent the number over, then headed back downstairs to drink again.
Gu Lulu stared at the contact info, now suddenly hesitant.
“What do you think my fourth uncle’s state of mind is right now?”
“Want me to call?” Qi Siyu offered. She had nothing to fear—she wasn’t planning on getting involved with Gu Qing’s parents anyway.
“Let’s do it together.” Gu Lulu licked her lips. “Or maybe bring Xiaoling and A-Qing too?”
“Sure.” Qi Siyu went to the bedroom to fetch Gu Qing, who was deeply engrossed in a book, the cover neatly wrapped.
“What are you reading? So absorbed.” Qi Siyu tiptoed over and suddenly spoke, trying to startle her.
But Gu Qing wasn’t startled at all. Her heartbeat remained steady.
Only when Qi Siyu got close and her hair brushed against Gu Qing’s cheek did her heart skip a beat.
“Nothing serious. Just a light read.” Gu Qing closed the book.
All Qi Siyu saw was a page full of English. Her language skills weren’t strong enough to make sense of it at a glance. It looked boring, instantly killing her curiosity.
“Gu Lulu got your biological father’s number. But we just found out that your mother… has mental health episodes around this time of year,” Qi Siyu summarized the update.
Gu Qing’s fingers absentmindedly flipped the edge of the book.
“So?”
“Ahem… she’s too nervous to call by herself. She wants us to be there with her.”
Qi Siyu thought Gu Lulu was being a bit dramatic, but not everyone had the benefit of her omniscient perspective—she couldn’t be too harsh.
“Alright.” Gu Qing put the book in her nightstand drawer.
Qi Siyu glanced at the drawer as she turned to leave.
Since when did Gu Qing start putting books away like that?

“Beep… beep…”
Gu Lulu’s phone rang as it dialed. It lay on the dining table, surrounded by the four of them.
Gu Lulu nervously kept drinking water. Gu Xiaoling hugged her own glass.
Qi Siyu, too, felt a bit tense thanks to their anxiety. Only Gu Qing remained calm and composed.
“Hello? Lulu?” came a voice—warm but weary.
He remembers my number! Gu Lulu felt a surge of emotion.
“Fourth Uncle, it’s me.”
“What’s the matter, Lulu? Are you in trouble?” he asked gently.
“It’s just that… I met someone who looks exactly like you did when you were younger… And then I did a DNA test with her…” Gu Lulu stammered through the explanation.
But before she could finish, the call ended abruptly.
Gu Lulu stared at the screen in a daze.
A second later, a video call request popped up.
She fumbled to accept it.
On screen, Gu Junsi appeared.
“Lulu, is she there? Let me see her.”
“She—she’s right here.” Gu Lulu turned to Gu Qing.
Gu Qing took the phone.
Father and daughter stared at each other across thousands of miles through the screen.
Perhaps blood truly runs deep—an inexplicable sensation welled up within both of them.
Gu Junsi raised a hand, as if to gently touch her familiar yet unfamiliar face. But the screen blocked him.
His lips trembled. A thousand words seemed caught in his throat. But in the end, they condensed into a single sentence:
“Can we… meet?”
Gu Qing cast a sidelong glance at Qi Siyu, catching the excitement and joy flickering across her face.
After a pause, she replied softly,
“Alright.”
