- Chapter 59 - A Taste of the Sea
Qi Siyu didn’t check her phone for the time being. Instead, she focused on listening to the host’s opening remarks, occasionally glancing at Jia Junjie out of the corner of her eye.
Watching Jia Junjie’s expression shift from disgust to surprise, then to gloom and finally panic, Qi Siyu felt nothing at all.
Within the first three minutes of the live stream going online, thousands of viewers had already entered the room, leaving Jia Junjie visibly irritated.
Then, inexplicably, the number of viewers began to skyrocket like a volcano erupting—reaching over a hundred thousand in a blink—and still rising fast.
Viewers meant traffic, and traffic was everything to Jia Junjie. She was thrilled—at first.
But when the crowd poured in, they weren’t there to support her. They were there to curse her out.
Curses she could handle. Infamy was still fame. But these comments weren’t just calling her vile—they said she was brain-dead, inhuman, and disgusting. Some even claimed they had already reported her to the police and warned her to prepare for arrest.
Arrest her? On what grounds?
Intentional harm? Public endangerment?
Gu Qing isn’t even dead!
She just wanted Gu Qing out of the show. It was Gu Qing’s fault for trying to compete with her in the first place.
Furious, Jia Junjie’s chest heaved as she lowered her head to furiously type responses. But how could one person fend off an army?
Eventually, she gave up on the barrage of hateful comments and turned off her phone.
The screen’s reflection showed her twisted expression, contorted with rage.
Tch. Even if the police wanted to arrest her, it would have to be in her registered district. There should be an investigation first—and by then, the show would already be over.
Even if she was taken in, it would just take some money to smooth things over. Did they think she hadn’t seen the inside of a holding cell before? These idle threats were nothing.
Reassured by her own reasoning, Jia Junjie calmed down. A bunch of ignorant peasants—only brave enough to talk trash online.
Qi Siyu silently watched this one-woman silent drama unfold, expressionless. Some people just have to hit rock bottom before they realize they’re falling.
She remembered the short videos Gu Qing had sent her—exposés about people like Jia Junjie, the most shameless of the shameless. She’d study them when she had time.
Maybe it was time to become a little “shameless” herself.
Since everyone had arrived early today, they finished the room assignments and host’s announcements by 3 PM.
Then the host announced the next task. “Ladies and gentlemen, as the saying goes: live off the land. Since we’re by the sea, it’s time to reap the sea’s bounty. Before 6 PM, please go foraging along the beach to gather ingredients for tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast.”
“Is this a competition?” Bai Ming’an asked.
“Ah, thank you for the reminder!” the host chuckled. “Yes—at the end, we’ll have two leaderboards: one for total weight and one for total value of the catch. The rankings will determine the dishes, cooking assistants, and a few small prizes. So please, try your best to entertain the audience!”
The guests silently cursed in their hearts. Trying to hide the rules again? What a garbage production crew.
“What about tools?” Bai Ming’an continued.
“Oh, Bai Ming’an, you’re so detail-oriented!” The host smiled. “The production team has hidden eight complete foraging kits around the village, each marked with our logo. Don’t miss them!”
Nine guests, only eight kits.
This damn crew.
Qi Siyu couldn’t help but admire how well Gao Zhonghai’s team understood psychological warfare.
“Let’s go, everyone!” the host cheered.
“Huh? There’s a kit right behind this trash can. Did the staff even bother hiding it properly?” Qi Siyu casually walked a few steps and found a box marked with the show’s logo.
Though she had insider info, this wasn’t the location they told her about.
Pure personal skill.
“Wow, congrats to Miss Qi for being the first to find a kit!” the host applauded.
The others: “…”
Damn it. Everyone cursed silently and rushed off to find a kit.
It wouldn’t be so bad if supplies were scarce, but one person out of nine was guaranteed to be empty-handed. No one wanted to be that one.
Qi Siyu carried her box back to the dorm to give the audience an update on Gu Qing and put their minds at ease.
She and Gu Qing were staying in rooms connected by a hallway without a shared living room, so she headed straight into Gu Qing’s bedroom.
She moved quietly, even reminding the cameraman to keep his movements light.
The split screen in the livestream merged into one, and Qi Siyu finally picked up her phone.
Viewers flooded the chat with concern:
【How is Gu Qing? Why is she still filming?】
【What is HotSun Entertainment doing? Why haven’t they reported Jia Junjie? She’s still allowed to be on this show after committing assault?!】
【President Qi, go beat Jia Junjie up! Knock her teeth out!】
【Forget that—just show us Gu Qing. She looks so pale and exhausted…】
Qi Siyu scrolled quickly through the barrage of comments, then quietly replied:
“Don’t worry, everyone. Gu Qing isn’t seriously hurt. The show has a chief physician on site, and she’s already been examined.”
“She can’t swim, so she was scared and caught a bit of a chill. The doctor said she just needs a good sleep.”
“As for calling the police—the show has already coordinated with them. But right now, Jia Junjie insists it wasn’t intentional, just an accident. We’ll see how the authorities handle it.”
Qi Siyu walked quietly over to Gu Qing’s side and pointed at the earbuds in her ears. “She’s listening to calming music to help her sleep. She should be out for another couple of hours.”
“You can check back in a bit—she’ll probably be awake by then.”
“I’m heading to the beach now to see what I can gather for food.”
With that, Qi Siyu carried her box back to her own room and opened it. Inside was a full set of gear: long rubber boots, a sun hat, gloves, needle-nose pliers, a small shovel, a squeeze bottle of salt, a net bag, and a bucket.
A lot of tools. Hopefully not useless ones.
After suiting up, she announced, “Time to gather some seafood for Gu Qing! Although she can’t eat much seafood right now, I can probably trade it with the crew.”
With that, Qi Siyu turned off her phone and left the livestream behind.
By tomorrow at the latest, Jia Junjie would be gone.
Even though she told Gao Zhonghai to stick to the plan, he would likely expedite things.
Letting go of those thoughts, Qi Siyu focused on tonight’s dinner.
She was a textbook inland girl who had no love for the sea. The only times she’d visited were either for work or dragged onto a cruise by friends.
She’d never foraged on the beach before—not even once.
Well, I can’t come back empty-handed. That would be embarrassing.
Clutching her pliers, Qi Siyu gave herself a pep talk. Let’s do this!
They had a three-wheeled vehicle to get close, but the last leg to the beach was on foot.
Even with her long legs and brisk pace, it took her half an hour to get there.
Damn. This crew is truly evil.
The tide was receding now. The shimmering sea looked golden under the sun.
Some villagers were already foraging—mostly elders and young kids.
Qi Siyu joined them seamlessly—or at least, she tried to.
Despite having the most complete gear, after twenty minutes of wandering, her bucket and bag were still completely empty.
This won’t do.
Eyes darting, she spotted a group of little girls and quickly struck up a deal.
They will find the seafood, and she will do the catching.
“Hurry, hurry! It’s getting away!”
“Jie-jie, you’re so slow! The crab’s right here!”
…
Two hours later, Qi Siyu was exhausted—but triumphant!
Sea cucumbers, crabs, mussels, oysters, octopus, razor clams, jellyfish, clams… even a fish!
Her bucket overflowed, and both bags were bulging.
“Tell me what you want, I’ll have it delivered to your house!” she grinned.
“Yay!” the little girls cheered.
Before leaving, she glanced around the beach. All the other guests had tools now—probably borrowed from villagers.
Heh. No way anyone caught more than me.
The crew set the final tally for 7:30 PM. It was only a bit past six.
So Qi Siyu, proud and loaded with seafood, headed back to Gu Qing.
When she entered the room, Gu Qing was already awake, sitting up in bed and chatting with the livestream audience.
“Gu Qing! Look at all this seafood I gathered! Am I amazing or what?” Qi Siyu beamed, eager for praise.
“So much?” Gu Qing was genuinely surprised. She’d never thought Qi Siyu had a knack for something like this.
As Qi Siyu approached, the salty, fishy smell grew stronger.
The old Qi Siyu would’ve recoiled in disgust.
“Look, even caught a big fish!” Qi Siyu held up the bucket for a close-up.
Gu Qing leaned closer to see.
The fish was on top, the rest of the seafood jumbled beneath. Qi Siyu honestly couldn’t remember what all was in there anymore.
Gu Qing watched the fish, and Qi Siyu watched her—only to see the livestream chat flooding with comments:
【The kids helped her find it all, lmao.】
Her cheeks flushed red. When did Gu Qing wake up and start watching the stream?!
Suddenly, the fish—pinched by a crab—flipped in pain, splashing water everywhere.
Qi Siyu instinctively backed away to protect Gu Qing.
But with the wet tiles and the heavy bucket, her balance was off.
Slipping was inevitable.
She tried to steady herself, but couldn’t. The bucket crashed to the floor, spilling seawater and seafood everywhere.
Qi Siyu’s arms flailed like windmills as she tried to regain balance.
Gu Qing reached out to catch her—but overestimated her own strength.
Instead, Qi Siyu toppled forward—right onto Gu Qing.
There was a moment of spinning chaos before Qi Siyu realized they were pressed tightly together.
Two muffled grunts rang out. Their breaths tangled.
Even though Gu Qing’s teeth had bumped her lip, Qi Siyu could still feel the soft warmth of her lips—moist and tender.
A softness hard to describe, with a sweet floral scent—like the most delicate blossom of spring.
Qi Siyu’s mind went blank, filled only with the pounding of her own heart.
Two wildly thudding heartbeats brought her back to reality. She quickly propped herself up.
“S-sorry…”
Before she could finish, her foot slipped again on something wet, and she fell once more.
Gu Qing had opened her mouth to say “It’s okay,” when—
Lips met again. But this time, it wasn’t just lips.
A warm, slightly wet tongue brushed against hers—like melted honey on a summer day.
A spark ignited the moment their tongues touched, sending a jolt up their spines and making their bodies tingle.
Qi Siyu instinctively moved her tongue slightly—deepening the accidental entanglement.
Oh god oh god oh god— her mind erupted into fireworks.
This time, she carefully got up and sat on the bed, face red, head down.
“S-sorry…”
Gu Qing looked dazed too, her cheeks flushed a bright red—an uncontrollable physical reaction.
“It’s okay. Are you alright?”
“I—I’m fine,” Qi Siyu stammered, feeling her body temperature skyrocket.
How is she supposed to face Gu Qing now?!
And yet… the memory of that soft sensation lingered sweetly.
The experienced cameraman, hired for high pay and briefed in advance, quickly angled the camera at the floor the moment they fell.
Viewers only saw the chaotic seafood crawling everywhere.
Why! Why cut away during the fall?! What happened?!
Those two quiet grunts sent their imaginations into overdrive.
