- Chapter 11 - "You've even learned to use the silent treatment!?"
Shen Yixing never liked the feeling of being questioned, and Jiang Baiyi’s words had undoubtedly hit a sore spot. The problem King Kong was explaining was ridiculously simple; he had figured out both methods to solve it halfway through the explanation.
“This problem is for morons, no need to look at the answer,” Shen Yixing said, looking coldly at Jiang Baiyi’s blank paper with a scoff, “Maybe you need to refer to the answer key.”
“The fuck… are you implying I’m a moron?”
Jiang Baiyi was despised by Shen Yixing, and just as he was thinking of a retort, he noticed that Shen was wearing a very grim expression.
After a moment of silence, Jiang Baiyi asked, “What’s with that face? Are you angry?”
“Not angry.”
Jiang Baiyi nudged Shen Yixing gently with his elbow, “If you’re not angry, then let’s chat.”
Shen Yixing didn’t want to deal with him, retracting his arm a bit to focus on flipping through his book and drilling problems.
Jiang Baiyi observed Shen Yixing’s small movements, thinking to himself that this guy wasn’t just prone to sudden bouts of anger, but he was also a bit hypocritical.
“Fine, fine, you’re the smartest one, and I’m the moron,” Jiang Baiyi snatched the pen from Shen Yixing’s hand, coaxing him with a bruised ego, “It’s not a big deal, don’t keep that sour face on.”
The bell rang exactly on the hour. As soon as King Kong walked out of the classroom, the surrounding students immediately became rowdy.
Shen Yixing didn’t have a pen to do his work, so he simply closed his book and laid his head on the desk to rest.
“You’ve even learned to use the silent treatment!?” Jiang Baiyi picked up a few strands of Shen Yixing’s hair and twirled them around his fingers. The black, silky hair slipped through his fingertips, and unable to resist, he opened his hand and gently ruffled it.
Tang Yuan, who was sitting in front, finished a game and remembered that the next period was PE class, so he turned around and asked, “Brother Yi, when are we going to the playground?”
Zhao Ci also turned around. When the two of them saw Jiang Baiyi smiling while ruffling Shen Yixing’s hair, they were so shocked their eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
Two pairs of astonished eyes fell on Shen Yixing, and the air of gossip instantly began to spread.
Shen Yixing tried to swat away the hand on his head, but Jiang Baiyi grabbed his arm and pulled him up.
“Let’s go now.” Jiang Baiyi wrapped an arm around Shen Yixing’s neck and lowered his voice, whispering in Shen Yixing’s ear, “If you keep that sour face on, I’m going to tell you the story about the soul possession again.”
Shen Yixing rolled his eyes and gave Jiang Baiyi’s shoulder a slap, “Are you being childish!?”
Jiang Baiyi laughed smugly, “I guess so.”
Shen Yixing had rolled his eyes enough and was tired of glaring, so he let Jiang Baiyi pull him along the whole way.
Behind them, Zhao Ci and Tang Yuan walked along sluggishly.
Zhao Ci watched as Jiang Baiyi in front of them lowered his head to whisper something in Shen Yixing’s ear, and Shen Yixing immediately gave Jiang Baiyi an annoyed glare.
“Why do I remember Brother Yi and my former deskmate not getting along?” Zhao Ci tugged on Tang Yuan’s sleeve, asking with confusion.
“Yeah!” Tang Yuan nodded in agreement. In the past, his Brother Yi was the guy who would pin the “jinx” down and beat him up, and now he was walking with his arms around the guy, forgetting about his own loyal little brother on the side.
Zhao Ci rubbed his chin and said, “I wonder when their relationship started to get better.”
“I remember it was…” Tang Yuan slapped his forehead, suddenly realizing, “I remember now. Last time at the performance, Brother Yi wasn’t planning on going, but after hearing that Shen Yixing was participating, he said he wanted to go see it.”
Zhao Ci felt like he had heard an incredible secret. He synthesized all the small details from the past and made a bold guess, “Tang Yuan, do you think they sparked something during their fights? How does that saying go, fighting is a form of affection, and scolding is a form of love!”
“Shh.”
Tang Yuan quickly covered Zhao Ci’s mouth. The last time he made a guess like that, he got scolded by Jiang Baiyi.
“Don’t guess blindly, my Brother Yi is straight!” Tang Yuan vouched for Jiang Baiyi’s sexual orientation, “Straighter than the flagpole on the playground!”
The sun today wasn’t gentle at all. It hung overhead, making people sweat, and even the occasional breeze carried a hint of heat.
PE class was shared between Class 1 and Class 2, so the playground was packed with students. Once students from both classes had arrived, the PE teacher arrived late, blowing his whistle to signal everyone to line up.
“Everyone, stand still! Today the boys will test for 1,500 meters, and the girls for 800 meters. Once you’re done running, you’re free to do what you want!”
The PE teacher finished stating the content of the class in a few words, and as soon as his voice fell, he was met with sighs of frustration from both classes.
“Don’t just sigh. This score will be calculated into your monthly exam results, so run properly. If you don’t pass, you’ll have to retake it!”
Hearing that it counted toward the monthly exam grades, the sighs grew even louder.
After the PE teacher explained the precautions for the test, he had everyone do warm-ups. The shoulder stretching exercises required partners. Zhao Ci and Tang Yuan were about the same height, so they were paired together.
Shen Yixing, unfortunately, ended up being paired with Jiang Baiyi.
After finishing the warm-ups, Jiang Baiyi looked Shen Yixing up and down. With those thin arms and legs, no matter how he looked at it, he was destined to fail.
“Wait, can you handle the 1,500-meter test?”
“Why ask so much, could it be that you can’t?” Shen Yixing raised his chin, his eyes clear and bright like a pool of water.
Jiang Baiyi was stunned by Shen Yixing’s rhetorical question, and blurted out, “You haven’t seen it, so how do you know I can’t?”
“Hiss.”
Zhao Ci, standing to the side, gasped, while Tang Yuan smacked his lips. The two of them exchanged looks and decided to quietly distance themselves from this conversation, which was unsuitable for young men.
People on the track side began to gather. The PE teacher blew his whistle to count the heads.
For this test, boys ran 1,500 meters and girls ran 800 meters, which looked like a terrifying distance regardless of how you looked at it.
The boys from Class 1 and Class 2 were running together, so it would only take two groups to finish.
Since Shen Yixing’s student ID number was at the end, he was assigned to the second group to run with the boys from Class 2.
While it wasn’t his group’s turn yet, he bypassed the crowd and stood next to the judges’ table, trying to make himself look less conspicuous.
“Ready.”
As soon as the PE teacher’s whistle blew, the boys swarmed out like a hive of bees. The most prominent person in the crowd was undoubtedly Jiang Baiyi.
“Wow, Jiang Baiyi is leading again this time.”
“Why is he so handsome when he runs!”
“Mom, he’s worthy of being my idol.”
“Here it comes, here it comes, he’s already finished a lap so fast!”
The girls who hadn’t run yet sat on the lawn in the center of the playground, whispering to each other while pointing at Jiang Baiyi. Some girls even gathered in groups, standing by the track to cheer on the boys from their class.
A lap of the playground was 400 meters, for a total of three and a half laps.
After the first lap, Jiang Baiyi wasn’t running so far ahead that he was unreachable. He had three or five boys huddled together behind him trying to maintain their stamina.
“Classmate Shen Yixing, are you watching Jiang Baiyi?”
Ruan Ming stood beside Shen Yixing, looking toward the same person.
Shen Yixing wasn’t specifically looking at Jiang Baiyi; he was just accustomed to paying attention to whoever was in first place.
He snapped out of it and gave Ruan Ming a polite smile, not bothering to correct Ruan Ming’s misunderstanding.
“Jiang Baiyi is just as I imagined, very charming, and very mysterious,” Ruan Ming raised his eyes, making no effort to hide the admiration in them, “Most importantly, he’s also very handsome.”
Shen Yixing smiled silently, thinking to himself that Ruan Ming was still too naive.
Shen Yixing could admit that Jiang Baiyi was handsome, but he couldn’t resonate with Ruan Ming’s assessment of him being “charming” and “mysterious.”
The first time he saw Jiang Baiyi in the restroom, Shen Yixing thought he was vicious and cold-blooded.
The second time, when Jiang Baiyi helped him and Zhao Ci out in the cafeteria, Shen Yixing thought he might have a strong sense of justice.
But now, Shen Yixing was annoyed to the point of questioning reality by Jiang Baiyi’s constant nitpicking every few days.
Ruan Ming saw the smile at the corner of Shen Yixing’s mouth and asked, “What are you laughing at?”
Shen Yixing put away his smile and said, “He might not be as good as you think.”
The admiration in Ruan Ming’s eyes gradually faded. He pursed his lips, “You seem to know him very well.”
“I don’t,” Shen Yixing didn’t want to get involved with Jiang Baiyi in any way.
“True. I forgot that you two don’t have a good relationship.”
Ruan Ming’s hand slowly clenched into a fist, his gaze continuing to follow Jiang Baiyi. After a long while, he said nonchalantly, “I like him.”
