Transmigrated as the Paranoid Protagonist's Pregnant Beauty - Chapter 3
Did Heng Shi really bite him on the collarbone? No wonder it wouldn’t wash off no matter what; it turned out the pigments of this world weren’t exceptionally strange after all.
Did the original host deliberately let Heng Shi bite him to increase credibility? And after being bitten, he actually managed to escape unscathed right in front of a drugged Heng Shi?
Zou Beiqi thought until his head was dizzy without figuring it out. It seemed the villain wasn’t as idiotic as he had imagined; his disguise in this aspect was actually quite skillful. Enduring Heng Shi’s glare, which felt like looking at a street rat, for a good while, he finally replied, “Sorry, my head was too dizzy.”
“Next time, please find a plausible excuse.” Heng Shi withdrew his hand without changing his expression, meticulously wiped the ointment off his fingertips with a tissue, and finally put the medicine jar back in its place.
As soon as he finished answering, Zou Beiqi also felt how ridiculous he was. To avoid making a fool of himself further, he abandoned speech. Before getting ready to sleep, he rolled off the bed to check on his father once more. Confirming that his father’s condition was stable, he climbed back onto the folding cot.
“Did you crawl onto my bed just for your dad?”
Before Zou Beiqi’s eyelids could even close, he was jolted awake by Heng Shi’s question.
“Sort of, I guess.” Zou Beiqi simply admitted it, as he couldn’t find any better excuse.
“Oh, then you really know how to self-sacrifice.”
Was this supposed to be a compliment? Zou Beiqi pondered for a long time without coming up with a suitable reply, and Heng Shi happened to shift the topic away: “Go to sleep.”
Zou Beiqi didn’t expect to sleep all the way until past noon. He slowly crawled out of bed, his gaze inadvertently falling on Heng Shi, who was staring at the numbers displayed on the machine as usual.
He hurried to his feet and only then noticed a tube of ointment and cotton swabs placed next to the pillow. Even though Heng Shi hadn’t been looking at him, he had already noticed his movement: “Use this on the wound on your collarbone.”
Zou Beiqi thanked him and carefully tucked the items into his pocket. Turning his gaze to the bedside table, he discovered that two nutritional meals had already been prepared. “Did you buy these?”
“Yan Ze bought them.”
There wasn’t much difference, Zou Beiqi thought. Even though he wasn’t a fan of hospital nutritional meals, he still thanked Heng Shi for his kindness.
He couldn’t help but stare at the transparent insulated lunch box inside the plastic bag for a long time, trying to deepen his understanding of the food he was about to eat. Yet, even this tiny action was caught by Heng Shi on the other side of the bed: “What, is it not the fried rice you like, so you’re unwilling to eat?”
“That’s not it. Didn’t you say I couldn’t eat that? Eating this is fine too.” Besides, whenever he smelled that grease recently, he inexplicably wanted to vomit.
Zou Beiqi fed his father. After the meal, the father and son chatted about ordinary topics. Before they could say much, the phone in Zou Beiqi’s pocket vibrated.
Subconsciously pulling out his phone, Zou Beiqi opened WeChat and found a message from someone with the remark name Sheng Wanzhong. This name had only been mentioned a few times in the original text; it seemed to be a friend of the villain.
Sheng Wanzhong: How is your dad? Is he okay?
Zou Beiqi: He’s fine, everything is good for now. We are currently trying a new medicine, and if we’re lucky, it might be cured.
Sheng Wanzhong: That’s good, take it slow and don’t rush. I just got back to Liwan recently and heard about your situation. It was already last year since we last saw each other, right? Do you want to go out for a drink?
Zou Beiqi: I need to watch over my dad.
Sheng Wanzhong: You don’t need to watch him round the clock, do you? Didn’t you just say your dad is okay? Besides, there are doctors at the hospital.
At this point, it was hard for Zou Beiqi to refuse, so he accepted Sheng Wanzhong’s invitation. Not long after, the other party sent a location, which was a bar located in downtown Liwan.
Zou Beiqi rushed to the destination at the agreed time. As soon as he stepped through the door, he felt the chaos and noise inside. He really didn’t understand why Sheng Wanzhong would make an appointment in such a place; could anyone even hear each other speak, he thought.
He carefully squeezed through the crowd and finally found Sheng Wanzhong sitting by the bar counter. The other party waved at him enthusiastically, and Zou Beiqi naturally took a seat next to him.
“You doing okay lately?” Sheng Wanzhong patted his shoulder. “I went traveling for a while, it was pretty interesting.”
Sheng Wanzhong began to recount the interesting things he encountered during his trip on his own. If Zou Beiqi remembered correctly, Sheng Wanzhong was his college classmate; the two of them had met through a photography club and subsequently developed a friendship.
The other party pushed a cocktail in front of him. Zou Beiqi felt a strange wave of nausea at the smell and politely refused.
“There are especially many over in Qingyue City.” Speaking up to this point, Sheng Wanzhong stopped without warning. “Beiqi, do you know that person?”
“Huh?” Zou Beiqi followed Sheng Wanzhong’s line of sight and only then noticed that an unfamiliar man was sitting in the nearest seat, sizing him up with an uncomfortable gaze.
Sheng Wanzhong pointed to the empty seat next to them, hinting that the two of them should switch places. “Sometimes I really worry about you. With such a pretty face, there are always some inexplicable pieces of trash eyeing you.” As he spoke, he shot a warning glare at the man.
The man clearly didn’t take Sheng Wanzhong’s warning seriously. Seeing Zou Beiqi move seats, he pressed close and handed a glass of alcohol in front of him: “Little beauty, give me the honor of a drink?”
Zou Beiqi instantly felt as if his ears were coated in grease. He waved his hand to refuse, but the man showed no intention of backing down. Instead, he stared straight at Sheng Wanzhong and asked with a rather provocative tone, “Is that guy your boyfriend?”
Sheng Wanzhong answered for him: “Yeah, why don’t you get lost?”
“Why hang yourself on a single tree? With your conditions, you can have a few more choices.” The man forcefully shoved the drink into Zou Beiqi’s hand, acting as if he wouldn’t stop unless the other drank it.
Sheng Wanzhong was completely angered: “Are you ever going to fucking finish? He already rejected you, can’t you understand human speech?”
“I’m just treating him to a drink, so what?” The man slammed the table and stood up. Having probably never seen such a shameless person, Sheng Wanzhong’s anger burned completely. He suddenly left his seat, walked up to the man, and gave him a fierce glare: “So what if he doesn’t drink?”
“Wanzhong, don’t make a scene with this kind of person.” Zou Beiqi hurriedly pulled on Sheng Wanzhong’s arm, but unfortunately, it was completely useless. The other party looked entirely determined to make someone submit: “I’ve seen too many people like you, trying to pick up anyone who looks good. You’re so shallow it’s disgusting, just rotten dog shit on the side of the road.”
“How did your mother give birth to you with such a stinking mouth? I guess your biological mother isn’t anything good either!”
“You talking about my mother?” The man’s words touched Sheng Wanzhong’s nerve. “Who told you to bring up my mother?”
In an instant, a fist landed on the man’s face. A fight became inevitable. Zou Beiqi tried every possible means to pull apart either of them, but to no avail. In his panic, he even broke his phone and finally had no choice but to immediately ask someone else to call the police.
When the police arrived, the man had been beaten by Sheng Wanzhong until he was almost unconscious on the ground. The injured person was sent to the hospital, and Zou Beiqi followed them back to the police station to record a statement, returning to the hospital very late.
The moment he pushed open the door and walked into the ward, Zou Beiqi almost froze in place. The spot where his father usually lay was empty. He immediately stepped forward to ask the person in the neighboring bed: “It seems like something happened. A bunch of doctors and nurses just pushed him out in a rush.”
In an instant, his mind flashed back to the day his biological mother passed away. He had just started kindergarten, and his father, holding back his tears, told him, “Qiqi, Mom has gone to live in another place, and we will never see Mom again.”
Zou Beiqi was practically running down the hallway looking for a doctor, only to bump into Heng Shi halfway. He accidentally crashed straight into the other’s embrace, catching a faint scent of alcohol on the black suit.
“Drinking with your boyfriend to the point where you don’t even answer your phone?” Heng Shi’s gaze felt like sharp thorns. “Your dad’s condition has deteriorated, and he’s currently undergoing emergency resuscitation.”
Too lazy to explain, Zou Beiqi asked, “What happened to my dad?”
“It’s possible there’s an issue with the new medicine. To be honest, considering both your dad’s physical condition and the drug’s characteristics, this shouldn’t have happened.” Heng Shi answered without any evasion.
Zou Beiqi’s head grew hot, and he blurted out, “Then shouldn’t you be the one asked?”
“I guarantee that the part I was responsible for had no errors. The specific reasons still need to be discussed, and various aspects may need adjustments.”
“You said at least you wouldn’t kill him.” Heng Shi’s robot-like, cold attitude made Zou Beiqi inexplicably furious.
“Theoretically speaking yes, but the specific reasons still need to be studied.”
“Enough.” Zou Beiqi didn’t want to hear Heng Shi’s official-sounding answers anymore. He rushed to the door of the operating room, stared at that red light in silence for the better part of the night, and finally waited until his father was wheeled out. His father had passed the critical period, pending further observation; the new medicine was temporarily suspended, and tomorrow they would proceed with a new treatment plan.
At least he was still alive, not like his biological mother whom he could never see again.
Zou Beiqi didn’t want to face death anymore, at least not at this age.
Since the new medicine was discontinued, there was no longer any need for Heng Shi to appear in the ward. His father remained unconscious, and his mother’s expression looked extremely heavy.
Zou Beiqi took some time to buy a new phone at a shop. After inserting the SIM card, he found that Sheng Wanzhong had called several times. He called back, and the other party answered quickly: “Beiqi! I couldn’t find you last night and thought something happened to you.”
“I’m fine, my phone broke.”
“To be honest, I might be in trouble.” Sheng Wanzhong deflated instantly.
The image of the man lying unconscious on the ground flashed through Zou Beiqi’s mind, giving him a deeply ominous feeling.
“I lost my temper at the time and hit him too hard. Now the other person is looking for compensation from me, I…”
“How much?” Zou Beiqi’s heart clenched tightly.
Sheng Wanzhong reported a number that almost made Zou Beiqi pass out. He had been exceptionally prone to dizziness lately; altogether, his entire body felt uncomfortable, and occasionally his lower abdomen would cramp sharply. Even if he suddenly collapsed on the street at some point, he wouldn’t find it surprising.
“Where would I get that much? They even said if I don’t pay, they’ll sue, and then I’ll need money to hire a lawyer.”
This matter was partly caused by him. Zou Beiqi pressed his lips together and made up his mind to speak: “I’ll try my best to figure something out. You should still consult a lawyer first; isn’t there a legal aid center around there?”
“Okay, I’ll go ask.” Sheng Wanzhong sighed imperceptibly. “Good thing I have you.”
Zou Beiqi hung up the phone. On one end was his father’s medical treatment fee, with the new plan out, it would cost a hefty sum every single day. On the other end was his friend Sheng Wanzhong’s astronomical compensation. If the other party got convicted because of this, he estimated he would feel guilty for the rest of his life.
Heng Shi had given him a sum of money previously. Without that compensation payment, his father’s medical expenses would have been completely sufficient.
Zou Beiqi felt as though he was being pressed down by a giant boulder, unable to breathe.
Sheng Wanzhong said it was fortunate to have him, but as for himself? Who else did he have to turn to for help?
He clutched his phone for a long time, his thoughts tangled and conflicted for who knows how long, before he finally decided to dial Yan Ze’s number.
Zou Beiqi didn’t have Heng Shi’s contact information, so he had to be this roundabout.
