- Chapter 36 - Good Wife, Why Do You Hate Me Again?
After the new classrooms were finished, the cadres from the three villages gathered a few days later to hold an opening ceremony. It wouldn’t be long before the children from the three villages could officially enroll.
Before the start of the term, there was naturally a vacancy for a teacher that needed to be filled.
Ever since the recruitment information for the teacher position went out, seven or eight villagers had visited Li Xiangdong’s house. For those who were uneducated and merely looking for a shortcut, he unceremoniously kicked them all out.
The problem was that there were still a few left who had some education, both middle school and high school graduates especially the sent-down youths. Regardless of whether they were men or women, they all wanted to snatch that teaching position.
Li Xiangdong was a bit worried; with so many people, if he wasn’t impartial, someone would surely report him. The village chiefs of the other villages naturally faced the same problem. After consulting with each other, they finally decided to use the method suggested by Ji Baiqing: the current teachers would design the exams together, creating three sets of papers for Chinese, Mathematics, and Politics.
Only after the papers were ready did they notify the villagers and sent-down youths: if you want to be a teacher, you have to place first!
Hearing this, at least half of the applicants wilted.
Upon hearing the news, Ji Baiqing massaged Wen Miao’s shoulders and asked, “How is it? Are you confident?”
Wen Miao knew she was referring to the exam. During this time, she had finished reading all the materials her grandmother sent. Ji Baiqing had even borrowed elementary school textbooks for different grades for her. She had gone through them all, and the knowledge was firmly rooted in her mind.
She nodded. “Don’t worry. How many times have you asked already?”
Ji Baiqing rubbed her nose. Even though it was Wen Miao taking the test, she was the one who felt nervous. In the original book, the teacher’s position belonged to Shen Niannian. While she had total confidence in Wen Miao over Shen Niannian, who knew if the female lead’s “halo” would affect the final result?
“I’m just worried about you.”
Afraid of putting too much pressure on Wen Miao, she quickly added, “Don’t be nervous. After the exam, I’ll take you to buy a beautiful dress, okay?”
Wen Miao shook her head. Her hand reached back and accurately hooked Ji Baiqing’s finger, giving it a gentle shake. “No, you should save your money. I have plenty of clothes already. Let’s just go to the state-run restaurant for a meal together; I’ve been craving braised pork.”
Ji Baiqing worked from dawn to dusk for that money, especially during the days they were building the house. Wen Miao had gradually developed a sense of the value of money; her monthly expenses had decreased, and while her quality of life hadn’t dropped, she realized there was no need to buy so many things.
Ji Baiqing could tell her wife was worried about her hard-earned money. She squeezed Wen Miao’s cheek, leaned over her shoulder, and kissed her on the lips. Wen Miao instinctively tilted her head back, making it even easier to continue the kiss.
Ji Baiqing froze for a second, a smile touching her eyes. What started as a light peck deepened as their tongues intertwined.
Eventually, Wen Miao was kissed into a sweat. Holding her head back for too long made her neck ache, so she finally pushed Ji Baiqing away and rubbed her neck, her voice sounding sweet and pampered:
“My neck hurts.”
Ji Baiqing looked at her with a smile. “Who told you to be so into the kiss?”
This person was simply shifting the blame. Wen Miao was embarrassed and annoyed, her cheeks flushing. “Ji Baiqing!”
Ji Baiqing quickly stepped forward to pull her into a hug. “Alright, alright, I was wrong. It’s all my fault. I’ll massage your neck for you right away.”
The teacher’s exam was held at the school. Like a parent taking their child to school, Ji Baiqing brought a water bottle, pens, and rulers to see Wen Miao off. At the school entrance, Ji Baiqing ran into Li Wenwen.
They hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Upon seeing Ji Baiqing, Li Wenwen’s eyes lit up. “Baiqing, why are you here too?”
She took two steps forward, only then noticing Wen Miao, who was partially hidden behind Ji Baiqing. Wen Miao was wearing a red and white checkered dress that fit her curves perfectly. Her porcelain skin looked even brighter in the sunlight, and her long hair was tied low, making her look both gentle and charming.
Li Wenwen stuttered out a greeting: “Youth Wen, good morning.”
Ji Baiqing felt a bit awkward seeing Li Wenwen. After all, her first argument with Wen Miao was because of her—though the main reason was Ji Baiqing herself. She carefully checked Wen Miao’s expression; Wen Miao looked perfectly fine and greeted Li Wenwen back.
Ji Baiqing felt slightly relieved. “I’m seeing Youth Wen off for her exam. Why are you here?”
At this, Li Wenwen began to complain. “It’s my dad. He said I should give it a try. If I pass the exam, I won’t have to go to school in town anymore. I don’t even want to be a teacher; I want to work at the supply and marketing cooperative after high school.”
Looking at the naive Li Wenwen, Ji Baiqing thought to herself: Silly girl, the clerks at the cooperative are all people with connections, not to mention you need a city household registration. It’s not that easy.
But she didn’t want to say anything discouraging, so she just smiled. “You can try other jobs too. Either way, finding a job is a win.” A guaranteed “iron rice bowl.”
The two chatted for a while. Wen Miao stood behind Ji Baiqing, her eyes fixed somberly on her back. Even though she knew Ji Baiqing didn’t have those kinds of feelings for Li Wenwen, seeing them talking so happily was still an eyesore. It seemed Ji Baiqing was enjoying herself so much she had forgotten she was even there.
The oblivious Ji Baiqing didn’t sense the resentful gaze behind her. After a few more words with Li Wenwen, the broadcast announced it was time to enter the examination hall.
Ji Baiqing turned and pressed the water bottle and stationery into Wen Miao’s hands. “Good luck! Don’t be nervous, you’re the best!”
Wen Miao pursed her lips without a word and walked into the school, looking quite displeased.
As people filed into the school, Ji Baiqing looked around and saw a few other people chatting while waiting for their friends or family. She decided to rest under a tree for a bit. Just as she turned, she collided with someone running fast.
She was about to help the person up, but as her hand touched them and she saw who it was, Ji Baiqing instantly snapped to attention, let go, and took several steps back. Without support and due to the momentum, Shen Niannian fell straight onto the ground.
Ji Baiqing walked toward the tree without looking back. Shen Niannian looked up, biting her lip at the heartless figure, and shouted, “You’re too much!”
Ji Baiqing didn’t even blink. She set her stool down and sat there composedly. Seeing herself ignored, Shen Niannian felt a surge of rage. But with the exam about to start, she didn’t have time to argue. She could only pick herself up and limp into the school.
Inside the classroom, Wen Miao took a sip of water. Just as the proctor began handing out the papers, someone rushed in frantically and sat down behind her.
The exam consisted of three different papers handed out together. There were no subjective questions, and the workload wasn’t heavy for the two-and-a-half-hour limit. Once the papers were distributed, Wen Miao skimmed the questions and felt confident.
She finished the Chinese and Politics papers first. It was mostly elementary knowledge with a few middle school-level questions. Having reviewed those recently, Wen Miao remembered the points clearly. She finished both within an hour. Then she started the math section. She finished almost everything in half an hour. For the final large question, Wen Miao frowned and calculated it, then decided not to write any further. She filled in her name and raised her hand to turn in her paper.
She had finished the two-and-a-half-hour exam in just ninety minutes.
Exiting the classroom, Wen Miao immediately spotted Ji Baiqing sitting under the tree, chewing on a blade of grass. The image of Ji Baiqing talking to Li Wenwen and ignoring her was still fresh in her mind; she hadn’t cooled down yet. She didn’t want to talk to her, but her feet moved toward her anyway.
Ji Baiqing had her eyes squinted when a gust of wind carried a familiar fragrance to her nose. She snapped her eyes open to see her beautiful wife standing there. Checking to make sure no one was looking, she reached out and wrapped her arms around Wen Miao’s waist, burying her face in her soft belly. She took a deep breath and asked muffledly:
“Out so soon? Our Zhenzhen is so impressive.”
There was no response for several seconds. Ji Baiqing looked up in surprise to see Wen Miao’s stiff face. Having been together for so long, she knew exactly what every expression meant. She was confused; why was she suddenly unhappy?
Releasing her hold on Wen Miao, Ji Baiqing stood up, instantly towering over her. Taking advantage of the height difference, she pinched Wen Miao’s soft cheek.
“What is it? Is our Eldest Miss unhappy again?”
Wen Miao pursed her lips and said nothing, silently walking toward home. Ji Baiqing carried her stool and followed, feeling baffled. When this person got angry, she was like a clam, you couldn’t pry the shell open; you just had to guess.
Ji Baiqing started retracing her steps from the morning. It wasn’t because she kissed her before she brushed her teeth, or kissed her while He Xiangyue’s back was turned, or asked her to change clothes in front of her those shouldn’t be reasons to be angry.
Suddenly remembering something, Ji Baiqing blurted out: “Is it because I was chatting with Wenwen? Are you jealous again?”
“My good wife, I’ve told you many times, I only like you.”
Wen Miao stopped in her tracks and tried to cover Ji Baiqing’s mouth. Ji Baiqing was agile and jumped back. Wen Miao’s eyelashes fluttered, and the corners of her eyes flushed a delicate red.
She snapped, “Don’t say that outside!”
There was no one on the road, Ji Baiqing thought, but she complied obediently. “Okay, wife, I understand.”
Wen Miao glared. “You’re still saying it!”
Seeing the “cat” about to truly explode, Ji Baiqing feared she wouldn’t be able to coax her back if it went any further. She quickly said, “Alright, Youth Wen, I’ll stop talking.”
Hearing that title made Wen Miao even more unhappy. Even though she was the one who forbade the overly intimate title, she had felt a hidden joy when Ji Baiqing used it. But calling her “Youth Wen” made it feel like they had no relationship at all. She was upset, but she was too embarrassed to say it plainly, as it would seem like she was being unreasonable.
She turned around and grumbled, “I hate you to death.”
Ji Baiqing felt truly wronged. “Why do you hate me again?”
Finally home, Ji Baiqing pulled Wen Miao into their room and had her sit on the edge of the bed. “Tell me, where did I upset you?”
Ji Baiqing didn’t like letting misunderstandings last overnight; it made Wen Miao moody and herself unhappy. Looking into Wen Miao’s eyes, the sense of grievance in Wen Miao’s heart surged again.
“You’re just so annoying.”
She complained in a dejected, soft, and delicate voice. This didn’t sound like anger; it sounded like acting spoiled. Ji Baiqing’s heart melted. She tilted Wen Miao’s chin and kissed her under the eye.
Her voice was lingering and coaxing. “Alright, you have to tell me how I’m annoying you so I can fix it, right?”
Wen Miao gripped Ji Baiqing’s clothes, leaving creases in the soft fabric. Being watched with such gentle eyes made her feel a bit self-conscious, thinking she was making a mountain out of a molehill. But Ji Baiqing was willing to indulge her. Wen Miao could see that in her actions and words.
Like a fledgling bird, she suddenly dove into Ji Baiqing’s embrace, hiding her face. Finally, Ji Baiqing heard her answer: “Because you talked to Li Wenwen today.”
Afraid of being misunderstood, she looked up and added: “It’s not because I’m jealous, but how could you talk to her and ignore me?”
Wen Miao’s eyes were beautiful, with a hint of blame floating in the light-colored pupils. The tilt of her eyes was vivid, something even her long lashes couldn’t hide. Even though they had been together a long time, Ji Baiqing still found her breathtaking.
She smiled, finding the beautiful woman absolutely beyond adorable.
How could someone be so cute even when they’re jealous?
“Zhenzhen, I know I was wrong. I was just worried you didn’t want to talk much to Li Wenwen, so I chatted with her for a bit.”
“And,” she acted like a large cat, lazily yet possessively wrapping her arms around Wen Miao’s waist and resting her chin on her shoulder, “the thought of you talking to someone else makes me a little jealous too.”
“How about I officially introduce you to Li Wenwen next time, okay?”
So, Ji Baiqing gets jealous over me too?
Hearing this explanation, the corners of Wen Miao’s lips curled up uncontrollably.
She maintained a dignified front. “Oh, alright. Since you put it that way, I’ll forgive you.”
Ji Baiqing was amused by her. “Then I must thank my wife for being so magnanimous.”
She cradled the back of Wen Miao’s head and said with a grin, “To show my gratitude, I’ve decided to offer myself as a tribute with a fragrant kiss.”
Before Wen Miao could react, the sound of soft, wet kisses filled the room. It was a long time before this lingering kiss finally came to an end.
Wen Miao’s entire face was flushed. The corners of her eyes were stained a vivid peachy red, and her lips glistened with a damp sheen. A single glance from her was enough to stir the soul, she exuded allure without even realizing it.
Ji Baiqing, on the other hand, had become the master of the situation. Her fair face had a slight blush, and her lips were just as swollen as Wen Miao’s, but her eyes held a spark of satisfaction.
She had learned to kiss incredibly fast. She had long since surpassed Wen Miao; now, the beautiful woman could only be pinned down and teased by her.
Watching Wen Miao panting softly, Ji Baiqing teased her leisurely, “Out of breath after just one kiss? What are we going to do later, my good wife?”
Hearing this, Wen Miao gave her a sharp, indignant look.
“You’re the one who can’t!” she snapped.
Then, like a competitive little kitten that hadn’t even caught its breath yet, she lunged forward.
Ji Baiqing wasn’t prepared for the move and was tackled onto the bed. Wen Miao sat astride her waist, looking down at her with lowered lashes.
“You just wait, Ji Baiqing,” she said. Her tone was just as delicate and pampered as before, but it carried a touch of bared-claws arrogance.
Looking up at Wen Miao from this angle, the curve of Ji Baiqing’s lips grew wider. She was getting excited—in every sense of the word.
She couldn’t help but lick her lips, a glimpse of her red tongue flashing by. “Oh, I’m so scared. Wife, please don’t go easy on me.”
Her voice was thick with undisguised anticipation, sounding much like a provocation.
Wen Miao was beyond annoyed. Mimicking the possessive stance Ji Baiqing occasionally showed, she pinned Ji Baiqing’s hands above her head. She leaned down, their soft bodies pressing together, lips rubbing against one another.
This tenderness didn’t last long. Wen Miao’s movements grew heavier. Simple sucking wasn’t enough; she nipped at Ji Baiqing’s lips with her teeth, then, losing interest in that, she caught and bit her tongue.
Hearing a low groan from the person beneath her, Wen Miao felt a sense of triumph and lightened her pressure. She carefully tasted the sweetness at the corner of Ji Baiqing’s mouth and began to cause trouble with her tongue against the roof of the other’s mouth.
She had plenty of curiosity but zero technique. Just as she was thinking of giving Ji Baiqing one last bite and stopping because her clumsy movements were making her tired, her hands felt a sudden looseness. Ji Baiqing’s hands broke free and pressed against the small of her back. A light touch on the back of her neck, an incredibly sensitive spot made her waist go soft instantly, and she collapsed entirely onto Ji Baiqing.
Before she could even process what happened, Wen Miao’s red lips were captured by Ji Baiqing for another thorough kissing.
By the time she was released, her chest felt a bit dull from being pressed down for so long, and her face was flushed with a feverish glow.
Ji Baiqing looked at the person slumped weakly on the bed and gave her a poke, her eyes full of laughter.
“Zhenzhen, are you okay?”
Wen Miao bit her lip, still recovering from the afterglow. After a long while, she regained her senses. “Annoying.”
She complained delicately, but she didn’t dare say any more provocative words. The gap in their “strength” was just too wide. Wen Miao was tired out like a little “cat pancake” and completely lost the desire to reclaim her dignity.
Fine, kiss me then. It’s just getting kissed until I can’t breathe every time. Nothing to be ashamed of. Sob.
“Alright,” after lying with Wen Miao for a bit, Ji Baiqing patted her bottom. “Get up, let’s go cook dinner together.”
Since that spot was close to her, she had patted it naturally. It felt quite good, soft and round.
Wen Miao’s body stiffened at the sensation. She couldn’t help but bristle again. She frowned and said loudly, “Ji Baiqing!”
“Don’t hit me there!” The second half was much quieter, and the blush that had started to fade crept back up her cheeks.
Seeing how embarrassed she was, Ji Baiqing adhered to the principle of not teasing her wife too much and nodded sincerely. “Okay, I was wrong, Zhenzhen.”
After giving Ji Baiqing one more “eye-dagger,” Wen Miao finally got up to go to the kitchen with her.
Ji Baiqing had thought the results of the morning exam would be announced that afternoon. To her surprise, it wasn’t until the next morning that the village chief notified the villagers and the examinees to gather at the threshing floor for the results.
When the broadcast came through, Wen Miao and Ji Baiqing were watering the vegetables. After finishing the last bit, Ji Baiqing led Wen Miao to the threshing floor.
By the time they arrived, the place was already bustling with people. Since it concerned the village school, almost every household with children was interested, not just those who took the exam.
This was a big deal for her wife. Ji Baiqing pulled Wen Miao through the crowd, using her height and strength to push past people until they were at the very front.
Coincidentally, they ended up right next to Li Wenwen.
Ji Baiqing was surprised. “You haven’t gone back to school yet?”
Li Wenwen gave her a soul-tired look. “My dad insisted I stay to hear the results before going back.”
Seeing the two of them chatting again, Wen Miao stood beside Ji Baiqing and pinched the small of her back. Feeling the sting, Ji Baiqing winced internally and helplessly pulled Wen Miao forward.
“I’m here with Wen Miao to hear the results too.”
Li Wenwen looked at Wen Miao and said sincerely, “I think Youth Wen will definitely become a teacher.”
Ji Baiqing chimed in, “Of course.” Looking at her proud expression, one would think she was the one about to become a teacher.
Once everyone had gathered, the village chiefs shouted for silence. “Quiet, quiet! The results are out. Let’s have Teacher Wu announce them!”
The noise died down. Ji Baiqing held Wen Miao’s hand, feeling her palms sweating slightly, and gave them a squeeze. Her eyes scanned the crowd and spotted Shen Niannian on the opposite side.
Standing next to her was a tall, thin, and fair man, Teacher Wu Weiguo.
Ji Baiqing’s brows furrowed. When did Shen Niannian get in touch with Wu Weiguo? And where was Lu Yan?
She watched Wu Weiguo whisper a few words to Shen Niannian before stepping up to the chief’s position. He cleared his throat and announced:
“It is a great honor to stand here today and speak…”
The man went on with a long-winded, scholarly speech until the villagers grew impatient. Finally, someone yelled, “Wu Weiguo, stop beating around the bush! If you have the results, just say them. Stop stalling!”
A chorus of agreement broke out. Wu Weiguo stood there awkwardly, his face flushing red. Finally, Li Xiangdong stepped in. “Alright, quiet! Quiet!”
Only then did Wu Weiguo announce: “The first place in this exam is Youth Shen Niannian!”
“Youth Shen received a perfect score on every single paper. She is exactly the talent our school needs!”
Ji Baiqing’s gaze fell somberly on Shen Niannian. Hearing the good news, Shen Niannian had a faint, sweet smile on her lips. She looked quiet and beautiful as if she had expected this all along.
Ji Baiqing looked at Wen Miao. Before she could say anything, she saw the woman beside her take a step forward. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for the village chief and Wu Weiguo to hear.
“I do not accept this result.”
Wu Weiguo was already annoyed by the earlier interruption. Now being questioned by a woman, no matter how beautiful, he felt only disdain.
“Comrade, there’s nothing you can do if you don’t accept it. The results speak for themselves. You should go back and study under Youth Shen for a few more years before coming back.”
At those words, many men in the crowd laughed.
Wen Miao’s expression remained calm. She wasn’t angered by his insulting words. She simply looked at the village chief and said:
“Chief, the other teachers should be here today as well, right? When I was taking the math exam yesterday, I discovered an error in the final question. Therefore, I didn’t answer it. That question is fundamentally impossible to solve. It is impossible for Shen Niannian to have a perfect score.”
