Transmigrated as the Doomed Scumbag Alpha of the Eldest Princess - Chapter 96
In October, the Jingyuan Army continued their advance, breaking through three cities near the capital as the war grew increasingly intense.
Meanwhile, far away on Luzhou Island in the East Sea, the atmosphere was also growing tense.
Half a month after Jiang Si’s departure, Mowan Ci moved into the estate on Luzhou Island, residing in a side courtyard adjacent to the main house where Jiang Si had once stayed.
This side courtyard was a two-story garden-style villa, the blueprint of which had been personally designed and overseen by Jiang Si. While not every brick and tile had been handled by her, she had been involved in most of the construction. However, work had halted a month before she left the East Sea.
The villa was already structurally complete, but the surrounding garden and interior furnishings remained unfinished.
Now that Mowan Ci was moving in, Miao Xia was kept busy. After having the place inspected, she intended to ask Mowan Ci for her preferences, only to be told that nothing special was needed just a shelter from wind and rain would suffice.
Afterward, all the belongings from the ship were moved in, including the several chests Jiang Si had left behind.
Winters in the East Sea were mild, so the house didn’t require the same level of insulation as those in the northern frontier. Mowan Ci was in a hurry, so Miao Xia had no choice but to follow orders, planning to add more furnishings after she settled in.
However, as a Kunze and with her pregnancy, moving around was inconvenient for Mowan Ci. When her anxiety grew, it was Lan Shao who managed to reassure her.
As Mowan Ci had said, all she needed was shelter from the wind and rain, and warmth.
Lan Shao, being a noble of the Jingyuan Army and the physician who had been overseeing Mowan Ci’s pregnancy, naturally earned Miao Xia’s trust. Thus, Miao Xia focused her efforts on the island’s livelihood.
The villa remained as Mowan Ci wished undisturbed by most.
Lan Shao, Wei Nian, and Zhi Miao moved in with her. Mowan Ci and Zhi Miao mostly stayed on the second floor, with Lan Shao coming every few days to check her pulse.
As her pregnancy progressed, Mowan Ci found movement increasingly difficult and rarely went downstairs. Zhi Miao stayed by her side at all times, though she herself was nervous, especially since Wei Nian spent most of her time studying medicine with Lan Shao, leaving her alone with Mu Wanci.
“Your Highness, the winter here in the East Sea is truly warm,” Zhi Miao remarked one morning as she opened the window to let in the gentle sea breeze.
Mowan Ci stroked her belly and nodded slightly before Zhi Miao added, “The scenery here is also wonderful. Just opening the window gives you a view of the vast ocean.”
The boundless sea lifted one’s spirits and Mowan Ci enjoyed gazing at it as well. She turned her head slightly, a faint smile gracing her lips.
This design was undoubtedly Jiang Si’s doing waking up to fresh air and a soothing landscape.
“Zhi Miao, let’s have breakfast.”
“Yes…”
These days, Mowan Ci preferred congee in the mornings. At first, she had wanted seafood congee, but Lan Shao forbade it, leaving her with plain rice porridge every day.
As Zhi Miao served her a bowl and watched her eat with apparent relish, she couldn’t help but ask, “Your Highness, don’t you ever get tired of eating the same thing every day?”
She had asked the same question a month ago, and though Mowan Ci had said she didn’t mind, here she was asking again.
“Though plain, the porridge warms my stomach.”
It was already October, but the weather in the East Sea wasn’t particularly cold. The house didn’t even need charcoal or underfloor heating, so Zhi Miao knew Mowan Ci wasn’t truly cold, it was her heart that felt the chill.
Ever since Jiang Si left, Mowan Ci had been like this detached, much like she had been in the imperial palace in Shangjing.
Yet Zhi Miao found herself missing the Mowan Ci from their year in the northern frontier, who had shown more emotion than she did now or back in the palace.
She felt sorry for Mowan Ci and silently glanced at her before suggesting, “Your Highness, would you like to take a walk outside and enjoy the scenery?”
She thought that perhaps seeing the view outside might lift Mowan Ci’s spirits.
But Mowan Ci refused without hesitation, “No need. My body is too cumbersome now, and I have to be careful when going out. How could I possibly enjoy the scenery?”
“Besides, can’t I just admire the view by the window?”
With that, Mowan Ci finished her plain porridge and tried to stand up, leaning on the table. Zhimiao, fearing she might stumble, hurried to her side to support her.
At over seven months pregnant, Mowan Ci’s belly was unusually large almost as if she were about to give birth any moment. Zhimiao guarded her like a precious treasure, carefully guiding her to the window and draping a heavy cloak over her shoulders to shield her from the wind.
This made Mowan Ci laugh. “You’re only wearing a thin autumn dress, yet you’re bundling me up like this?”
Zhimiao didn’t find it amusing at all and replied sternly, “Your Highness is different from me. You’re carrying a child and are more sensitive to the cold.”
“But winter in the East Sea feels like early spring in the Northern Frontier, how could it possibly be cold?”
After Jiang Si left, Zhimiao had struggled for a while, but eventually, she came to terms with it. What had started as forced restraint gradually turned into genuine composure.
Faced with Mowan Ci’s retort, she remained unruffled and said, “Even if it’s not cold, staying warm is never a bad idea.”
“Alright, I’ll listen to you, Zhimiao,” Mowan Ci replied with a smile, her eyes curving gently.
Zhimiao nodded silently, though a trace of worry lingered in her heart.
In the past, her concerns had been too obvious, but after Jiang Si left the East Sea, it took her a long time to understand.
Mowan Ci and Jiang Si’s relationship had never been one of true affection, and Zhimiao had always resented this on Mu Wanci’s behalf yet she had never truly understood her.
Now, with the imminent arrival of their child, Zhimiao knew she had to learn to shoulder responsibility. She had to take care of Mowan Ci and the little one, so in recent days, she had been exceptionally attentive.
“Your Highness, what would you like for lunch? I’ll prepare it for you.”
“We’ve only just finished breakfast are you already thinking about lunch?” Mowan Ci asked in surprise.
Zhimiao chuckled. “You’re eating for two now, and your appetite has grown. The morning will pass quickly, and by the time I finish cooking, it’ll be noon.”
Mowan Ci lowered her gaze to her swollen belly and silently agreed Zhimiao was right.
Indeed, after her morning sickness passed, her appetite had surged, and she now ate twice as much as before.
Blushing slightly, she nodded. “Go ahead.”
“Very well. Let me help you back to bed first.” Zhimiao supported her back, ensuring everything was settled before heading downstairs to cook.
Unbeknownst to her, shortly after she left, Mowan Ci began to feel unwell.
Since becoming pregnant, her heat cycles had ceased entirely yet now, a faint burning sensation at the nape of her neck reminded her of those days.
Suddenly, she recalled something Lan Shao had once told her.
An unmated Kunze, deprived of an Alpha’s scent during pregnancy, might rarely experience heat-like symptoms during childbirth. Only after enduring this ordeal could the child be born and the process was often life-threatening.
The thought filled Mowan Ci with dread. Gritting her teeth against the pain, she weakly called out for Zhimiao. But with Zhimiao downstairs, her voice didn’t carry far enough, and there was no immediate response.
Time stretched unbearably. By the time her vision blurred from agony, a figure finally appeared at her side.
Zhimiao faintly heard Mowan Ci calling her, but the voice was so soft that she had to listen carefully to make it out. She hurriedly rushed upstairs and found Mowan Ci lying in bed with a flushed face, her gaze unfocused, which startled Zhimiao.
With a thud, she knelt on the floor and cried out, “Your Highness…”
“Your Highness, don’t scare me! I’ll go call for help right away…”
Lan Shao and Wei Nianqi had already gone to gather herbs. When they returned, they heard heavy footsteps pounding up the stairs and immediately sensed something was wrong. They quickened their pace and saw Zhimiao, her face streaked with tears.
“Doctor Lan… Her Highness… Her Highness seems to be entering her estrus cycle, but how? It shouldn’t be. It was already…” Zhimiao was utterly confused, but the overwhelming scent of snow lotus in the room made her dizzy. Seeing Lan Shao, she wanted to pull her in to check on Mowan Ci.
But then she remembered, Lan Shao was a Qian Yuan and couldn’t enter freely. So she turned to Wei Nianqi instead.
Wei Nianqi had already set down her basket and reassured her, “Don’t panic. Go find Commander Miao, we’ll need extra hands in the courtyard.”
“Alright!”
Seeing Wei Nianqi’s calm and composed demeanor, Zhimiao felt a pang of guilt.
Though she wanted to take on responsibilities, when the moment came, she still panicked.
“Wei Nianqi, go upstairs quickly. I’ll prepare some herbs and brew ginseng water. I’ll send someone up with it soon,” Lan Shao instructed.
Wei Nianqi was also uneasy, but Lan Shao’s words steadied her. She nodded silently and headed to the second floor.
By then, Mowan Ci’s entire body burned like fire, her pheromones surging uncontrollably. Fortunately, Wei Nianqi couldn’t sense them and went straight to the bedside.
“Your Highness, don’t be afraid. Doctor Lan has already told me how to handle this,” Wei Nianqi said calmly, trying to soothe Mowan Ci. But when she looked up, she saw that Mowan Ci didn’t seem anxious at all.
It was as if she had anticipated everything. With great effort, she grasped Wei Nianqi’s hand.
Smiling weakly, she whispered, “I… trust you and Lan Shao.”
In her past life, it had been the same thanks to Lan Shao and Wei Nianqi, she had barely managed to give birth to A Yue.
Today should be no different.
The only change was her state of mind.
Back then, her heart had been numb, and carrying Jiang Si’s child had filled her with nothing but humiliation. It was only after A Yue’s birth that she gradually recovered and found hope in life again.
But now, aside from wanting to deliver the child safely…
She couldn’t stop her thoughts from drifting to Jiang Si.
If only Jiang Si could be by her side at a time like this.
But alas, she was the one who had driven him away.
Wishing for such a thing was nothing but a fool’s dream.
The pain in her abdomen grew unbearable. Mowan Ci had nearly exhausted all her strength without delivering the child. At the critical moment, the ginseng water Lan Shao sent up revived some of her energy.
Her pheromones also stabilized slightly, allowing her to grit her teeth and push forward.
Finally, the sound of a baby’s cry filled the room. Mowan Ci exhaled in relief, her strength completely spent as she collapsed onto the bed. Turning her head, she saw Wei Nianqi holding the child before her.
Mowan Ci gave a faint smile but was on the verge of passing out.
Wei Nianqi panicked and shouted, “Your Highness, don’t sleep! The little one still needs you…”
But Mowan Ci barely had the strength to respond. Then, from the doorway, Lan Shao’s voice rang out,
“Your Highness, didn’t you order me to do everything to ensure the safety of the children in your womb?”
“Twin fetuses, and not yet full term. If Your Highness gives up now, in just a short while, not even I let alone the greatest immortal could save them!”
The room was filled with people maidservants carrying hot water, midwives, and even Zhi Miao guards all froze at Lan Shao’s thunderous declaration.
Lan Shao’s urgency sent waves of panic through everyone present. Fear hung thick in the air as they exchanged uneasy glances.
Yet no one dared shake Mowan Ci directly, only calling softly by her ear.
Suddenly, Mowan Ci’s eyes flew open again, her face now several shades paler.
During her brief unconsciousness, she had dreamed of Mu Zesheng without warning.
It was in the imperial gardens of Shangjing’s palace, she barely sixteen, Mu Zesheng even younger, still needing her patient guidance.
The strange part was the child she held in her arms.
Mu Zesheng’s eyes burned with hatred, his inner ugliness and malice laid completely bare before her.
He tried to snatch the child from her arms.
The struggle in the dream jolted her awake as did Lan Shao’s words.
Carrying twins had been unexpected. She’d thought this child would be her Ayue, only for Lan Shao to reveal at three months that she bore twins.
Five long months had passed in a whirl of joy, guilt, and unease.
She couldn’t, wouldn’t extinguish this hope with her own hands.
Every word Lan Shao shouted outside struck Mowan Ci’s heart like hammer blows. The nightmare haunting her shattered, and strength seemed to flood back instantly.
Tears welling in her eyes, Mowan Ci clenched her jaw.
One thought consumed her: she must watch Ayue grow up, and take responsibility for the other life within her.
This conviction alone revived her spirit.
After what felt like eternity, another infant’s cry finally rang out and Mowan Ci’s heart settled at last.
She had given birth. To Jiang Si’s children.
Did you ever imagine there’d be twins?!!!!
