- Chapter 68.1 - Late is Late
Only Min Jiru came down for breakfast, looking exhausted and drowsy.
Seeing only her, Grandmother Huo asked, “Where’s Xien? Is he feeling unwell?”
Min Jiru replied, “Xien isn’t sick, he’s just too sleepy to get up.”
Grandmother Huo chuckled. “Isn’t that Nannan’s problem? Loving to sleep in. How did it get passed on to Xien now?”
Huo Jianan slurped her congee loudly. “Grandmother, I haven’t slept in ages! Didn’t I come down for breakfast on time today?”
“Yes, Nannan’s become diligent, no more sleeping in.” Grandmother Huo tried to pick up a carrot-shaped bun for her.
Huo Jianan snatched her plate away in horror. “No way! I hate carrot buns! I despise carrots!”
“Then just keep staring at those steam-fried meat buns! You won’t eat the propolis buns, the black truffle buns, or even the three-delicacies buns. You can’t be so picky! Eat! At least once a week. Your nutrition is unbalanced. How will you give me a beautiful great-grandchild in the future?”
For the sake of eugenics, Huo Jianan reluctantly ate with a sour expression.
Min Jiru smiled, watching the grandmother and granddaughter chat and laugh. The scene was light-hearted and affectionate, like a loving grandmother and a mischievous granddaughter. Xi En would undoubtedly be delighted to see such a warm scene.
After breakfast, Grandmother Huo instructed the kitchen to save a portion of the congee with century eggs and lean meat for Meng Xien. She then added, “She likes dry-fried beef with rice noodles. Xiao Ru, when Xien wakes up, please tell Housekeeper He to have the kitchen prepare it fresh.”
“Understood, Aunt Xu,” Min Jiru replied.
“Grandmother, that’s not fair!” Huo Jianan protested. “Why didn’t you give Sister Meng a radish bun?”
“Sister Meng isn’t as picky as you. She’ll eat whatever she’s given. She’s already had radish buns three times this week. By that logic, you still owe two more, right?”
“Uh…” Huo Jianan immediately fell silent, turning her gaze out the window to avoid Grandmother Huo’s stern look.
After finishing breakfast, Xu Weiyi left for the company. Huo Jianan, however, didn’t rush to work. Instead, she went to Sister Meng’s room to check on her.
Inside the room, Meng Xien was still sleeping soundly, wrapped warmly in her quilt.
Huo Jianan quietly slipped out and went to the adjacent study with Min Jiru.
“Sister-in-law, did Sister Meng sleep well last night?”
“She was a little restless at first, but eventually settled down.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “When Sister Meng wakes up, tell her the dream she told me about won’t come true. Just as she said, I’m different from the person in her dream now. I’ll do my best to become a worthy heir to the Huo Corporation. Tell her to rest well, not to worry, and to recover quickly so she can come back and help me at the company.”
Min Jiru looked at her, her feelings a complex mix. “Jianan, thank you for caring so much about Xien.”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “What are you thanking me for? Sister Meng is my sister. She’s always been the one to worry about me; now it’s my turn to look after her.”
A few days later, Huo Jianan went to the hospital for her usual leg treatment. During her training session, she noticed Wang Baobao flipping through travel guides.
“Baobao, are you planning a trip somewhere?”
“I’m planning to take Jiangjiang to my family’s home for the New Year to meet my relatives.”
Huo Jianan said, “I remember you took Doctor Jiang to meet your parents before, right?”
“That was just a casual meal at a restaurant. This time, we’re going to my family home, and my grandfather, grandmother, second uncle, third uncle, and aunt will all be there.”
Huo Jianan gasped. “Does that mean you’re setting a date and planning the wedding?”
Wang Baobao beamed. “It’s an engagement party! Then we’re going on a skiing vacation abroad. This trip is my New Year’s gift to Jiangjiang.”
Huo Jianan imagined soaring freely through the snowy landscape, as carefree as a bird. She glanced down at her paralyzed legs and suddenly felt an overwhelming pang of envy.
If she were able-bodied, she too would want to take Nianning on world-wide vacations—skiing, surfing, and more.
“Dada, Jiangjiang and I have arranged it. One of her colleagues will continue your therapy during those days. Keep up the good work! Jiangjiang mentioned that Country G is releasing a new drug next month, which has already passed clinical trials. Once you start using it, combined with your training, you might see significant progress. You could be walking again in just two or three months.”
“Really?” Huo Jianan’s eyes lit up at the unexpected news of a new drug. She could actually stand up! She eagerly imagined the day she would suddenly walk among everyone—her grandmother, Nianning, Sister Meng, and the others—shocking them speechless.
Wang Baobao replied, “Jiangjiang just received the official mail from Country G yesterday. How could I joke about something like that? Keep up the good work! Keep training!”
Huo Jianan nodded solemnly. “I will!”
But soon, Huo Jianan found herself troubled by another matter. Baobao’s New Year’s gift was a skiing trip with Doctor Jiang. She hadn’t even prepared Nianning’s gift yet.
What should I get Nianning? Clothes and bags are too common. Jewelry seems unoriginal. A new game? Forget it—Nianning isn’t into games. A famous painting? Nianning doesn’t seem particularly interested in art. If I bought one, I’d end up being the one staring at it all day.
Huo Jianan glanced out the window. Through the slats of the blinds, she saw several young staff members outside sharing a snack that looked delicious.
Should I send her a giant snack pack? Huo Jianan imagined Ruan Nianning eating until her belly was round and puffy, roaring at her with a playful ferocity, “Are you trying to fatten me up and kill me?”
Huo Jianan shrank back. Better not.
She remembered something important and picked up her phone to text Film Empress Song.
As the days passed and the Lunar New Year approached, Huo Jianan went to the hospital for her usual leg rehabilitation session.
With the New Year approaching, Wang Baobao was busy, so Huo Jianan didn’t ask him to pick her up. Instead, she had the driver take her to the hospital.
“Young Miss, shall I take you upstairs?”
“No need. I’ll go up myself. I’ll call you when I’m ready to come down.”
The elevator door chimed open. As Huo Jianan exited, she was surprised to hear someone call out from the corridor, “Miss Huo, Miss Huo!”
It was a clear female voice, filled with unmasked joy.
Huo Jianan turned her wheelchair. Before her stood a slender figure in a green coat. Beneath the coat was a white, waist-cinched dress. Long, smooth hair cascaded over her shoulders, shimmering with a natural radiance.
Noticing Huo Jianan’s gaze, the woman’s lips curved into a fresh and graceful smile, like a lotus blooming gracefully above a lotus leaf—natural and refreshing, yet warmly approachable.
It was Bai Han, the Second Young Miss of the Bai Family.
“Miss Bai, hello,” Huo Jianan said with a polite smile. “What brings you to the hospital? Is something wrong?”
Bai Han’s fair, delicate cheeks flushed visibly. “It’s not me. My mother slipped this morning. I’m here to accompany her.”
“Oh, I hope your auntie is alright. Was it a bad fall?”
“Not too serious. She twisted her waist, but thankfully there were no fractures.”
Hearing about Madam Bai’s accident, Huo Jianan felt it was her duty as a junior to pay her respects. “Which room is your mother in? I’ll visit her later.”
“No need to trouble yourself.”
“It’s the least I can do.” Huo Jianan harbored no grudge against the Bai Family; her only aversion was toward the eldest daughter, Bai Ying. “By the way, is your sister here? If she’s around, I won’t bother visiting.”
Bai Han quickly explained, “It’s alright, my sister isn’t here. She just dropped by earlier and left.”
Only after speaking did Bai Han realize her mistake, as if she had been afraid Huo Jianan wouldn’t come. Blushing, she lowered her head and stared at her feet.
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Alright then. I’ll see you later, Miss Bai.”
Bai Han remained with her head bowed, her ears so red they seemed about to drip blood. Hearing this, she nodded happily. “Yes, yes.”
An hour later, in Madam Bai’s hospital room, the pain in her sprained ankle had subsided after treatment. Madam Bai was eager to be discharged, but her daughter said, “Mother, please wait a little longer. The Huo Family Young Miss said she’s coming to visit you.”
Madam Bai reluctantly lay back down. “Tell Miss Huo not to bother. It’s just a minor sprain, nothing serious. There’s really no need for her to come.”
“No, Mother, please wait just a little longer. Miss Huo should be here soon.”
Bai Han gazed intently at the doorway, waiting for the figure in the wheelchair. She rarely got to see Miss Huo, and she couldn’t let this opportunity go to waste. She had to wait for her.
Seeing her daughter’s eager anticipation, Madam Bai sighed. Her two daughters held diametrically opposed views of Huo Jianan: one loathed her with such fervor, while the other insisted she was a kind and well-mannered person, the most refined among all the young ladies.
When the figure in the wheelchair finally came into view, she sat upright and composed, her demeanor calm and dignified. Unlike other wealthy young ladies, she lacked arrogance or an air of superiority, exuding instead an innate warmth and grace.
“Miss Huo, you’re here,” Bai Han said, rushing forward with restrained excitement. “Let me push you inside.”
Huo Jianan accepted her offer. “Thank you.”
The driver followed behind, carrying a gift for the patient. Huo Jianan had asked him to purchase it at the last minute, which had taken some time.
In the hospital room, Huo Jianan politely and warmly inquired after Madam Bai’s well-being, and the two exchanged pleasantries. As Huo Jianan glanced around, her gaze fell upon a wooden plaque hanging at the head of the bed. She picked it up and examined it, noticing strange and intricate symbols etched upon its surface.
Madam Bai smiled. “This? This was personally made for me by my second daughter. She says it’s for protection and safety.”
Huo Jianan couldn’t help but look at Bai Han.
Bai Han explained, “This is a Safety Talisman I drew for my mother. In the place where I used to live, there was a custom of drawing talismans for protection.”
Huo Jianan: “Can anyone there draw these talismans?”
“No, drawing talismans requires spiritual energy. Only girls chosen by the elderly women of the mountains are qualified to draw them.”
“How many girls in your area are qualified to draw these talismans?”
Bai Han blushed. “A-Lan and I. She’s the third daughter of the Lan Family.”
Huo Jianan looked at Bai Han again and chuckled, “Who knew we had a ready-made female mage here? No, wait, you should be called a Saintess. That sounds more elegant.”
