- Chapter 63.1 - Second Young Miss Bai
“Dada, you really did it! Did you see Bai Ying’s face? It was twisted with fury! Hahaha, that’s satisfying! Now you’ve gotten your revenge!”
“Revenge? What revenge?”
“For the blind date, of course! She looked down on you, spread rumors about your ‘defects,’ and even called you a ‘cripple’ today. She deserved a good scolding!”
Huo Jianan: “……”
She hadn’t thought of it as revenge. She simply couldn’t stand Bai Ying’s arrogant demeanor and the way she mocked even her own younger sister, which had prompted her to snap back.
News of the conflict between the Bai and Huo family young misses at the gala spread quickly through Changbin’s high society circles.
“I heard Huo Jianan and Bai Ying got into a heated argument at the gala!”
“Really?! Why did they argue?”
“It was about that blind date years ago. Huo Jianan said, ‘Thank heavens it didn’t work out—God must have been watching out for me.'”
“Hahaha, she really said that? Huo Jianan has quite the sharp tongue, holding a grudge all these years.”
“Well, you can’t blame her. Bai Ying went around calling her a ‘cripple’ and a ‘lifelong wheelchair-bound invalid.’ Of course Huo Jianan would be upset and hold a grudge.”
“So she got her revenge this time! Bai Ying was so angry she threw a shoe at her! I heard she was cursing nonstop!”
“Really? They actually came to blows? Did she hit her?”
“She missed? What a shame! We would have had a real show!”
That evening during dinner, Grandmother Huo glanced at her granddaughter. “Nannan, did you argue with Miss Bai at the banquet the other day?”
Huo Jianan didn’t deny it. “Yeah, we had a few words.”
Grandmother Huo remained calm. “Was it about the arranged meeting?”
“Of course not. The meeting didn’t go through, and I thanked Buddha for his blessings.”
“Really?”
“Grandmother, I have Nianning now. Nianning is ten thousand times better than her. Why would I dwell on old grudges?”
Hearing her granddaughter’s indifferent attitude towards letting go of the past, Grandmother Huo knew she meant it.
At the time, Huo Jianan had just returned to the Huo family. She remembered how, after the arranged meeting, Huo Jianan had returned with a livid expression, furious and humiliated, tearing her formal dress to shreds with her own hands. “I said I didn’t want to go, but they forced me! Look, now I’m the laughingstock of all Changbin! Even if all the Omegas in the world died out, I’d never marry that Bai Ying!”
Grandmother Huo thought to herself, My granddaughter has truly changed. Before, she would bottle up her anger, too afraid of being mocked to retaliate. Now she can actually stand up to that arrogant Young Miss Bai and make her throw her shoe in fury. In some ways, this is a good thing.
Feeling deeply pleased, a hint of amusement played on Grandmother Huo’s lips. “If it’s not holding a grudge, then what is it?”
“I can’t stand her arrogance—acting so superior, looking down on everyone! Grandmother, didn’t the Bai Family’s second daughter spend twenty years lost before being recognized and returning to the family? Yet the other day, she publicly ridiculed her own sister in front of a crowd of outsiders! What kind of elder sister does that?”
“You can’t stand it?”
“Mm-hmm. I hate it when a group ganged up on a weaker person, using their numbers to bully. What’s the difference between that and plain old bullying?”
Huo Jianan sighed softly, remembering similar experiences she’d faced in the workplace in her previous life. A greasy old employee, favored by the manager, had subjected her to endless passive-aggressive insults, sabotage, and mockery. Whenever the old man started his snide act, the manager and his cronies would stand by, watching the spectacle, while other lackeys fanned the flames.
They were just taking advantage of her lack of money and influence, assuming she wouldn’t dare quit. But she did. She submitted her resignation, refusing to cater to those monsters any longer. As for the dirty and exhausting work? Whoever wanted it was welcome to it.
Later, her supervisor came to talk to her, lecturing her about life and work. She listened with a polite smile, letting the words wash over her. “That was never part of my job description,” she said. “Now that I’ve resigned, it has nothing to do with me.”
She could empathize with the Second Young Miss Bai, being ridiculed by her sister Bai Ying and mocked by others—feeling utterly helpless and alone.
Huo Jianan pursed her lips, suddenly finding the seafood soup in her mouth less flavorful.
“Did you insult her, calling her lawn crude and smelly?”
Huo Jianan froze, then laughed guiltily. “Grandmother, how do you know that? You must also know she insulted me back and threw a shoe at me! Lucky I dodged it—otherwise, your precious granddaughter would have a hole in her head right now.”
She held up her fingers, mimicking the thickness of a high heel.
Grandmother Huo shook her head helplessly at her spoiled granddaughter. “This matter isn’t a big deal, but it’s not insignificant either. The two families are collaborating on two major projects now, and no one wants to let this ruin their relationship. Throwing a shoe and cursing at you was certainly wrong, but running onto their lawn and using it to mock them was any more polite?”
Huo Jianan fell silent. Running to the host’s house to confront them was indeed impolite. Besides, she knew about the two projects—they were in their mid-to-late stages, and the collaboration had been going well. Letting this incident sour their relationship would be counterproductive, and it would make them a laughingstock among Changbin’s high society.
Grandmother Huo cleared her throat. “The Bai Family called today. They’re coming to visit this weekend to offer condolences. You’ll need to meet with them then.”
“Will Bai Ying be there?” Huo Jianan asked. “If she is, I’ll just stay home that day and go to the hospital to visit Sister Meng instead.”
Grandmother Huo shook her head. “Fine, I understand.” She then picked up a large shrimp and placed it on Huo Jianan’s plate. “Eat up. You’re all puffed up with anger. You’re acting like a child.”
Huo Jianan grinned as she began eating, then picked up another shrimp and placed it on her grandmother’s plate. “Here, Grandmother, have one too.”
At the Bai Family residence, Bai Ying angrily flung down the necklace in her hand. “I’m not going! She insulted me first! Why should I apologize to her?”
Mr. Bai said, “You threw a shoe at her! And used such vile language! So many people saw and heard it! You caused this mess—how can you refuse to apologize?”
“Father, she insulted me! She started it! I was just defending myself! Are you going to make me swallow this humiliation and grovel before her? Does the Bai Family fear the Huo Family?”
“How foolish can you be? Because of your loose tongue, you’ve jeopardized a fifty-billion-yuan business deal!”
Bai Ying’s face flushed crimson with anger. “Anyone who wants to go can go! I’m not going!” With that, she slammed the door shut behind her.
On Saturday, a luxurious Bai Family car slowly pulled up in front of the Huo residence. Three figures emerged: Mr. Bai, Madam Bai, and Second Young Miss Bai, Bai Han.
Huo Jianan was somewhat surprised to see Second Young Miss Bai. Her grandmother had told her that Bai Ying was too ill to attend, leading her to assume only the Bai Family couple would visit.
Bai Han wore a white dress embroidered with lotus patterns at the hem and waist. Her long, glossy black hair, which had been tied in a ponytail the other day, now cascaded softly over her shoulders.
That night, with the dim lighting, she could only make out vague outlines. Today, she finally saw that Second Young Miss Bai was a delicate and beautiful girl with fair skin and a shy temperament, someone who blushed easily.
But her figure remained as thin as the day they met on the lawn.
Huo Jianan thought that before being recognized as a member of the family, Miss Bai must have lived a difficult life, with poor food and never enough to eat, which had left her so thin.
“Hello, Miss Bai.”
“Hello, Miss Huo,” Bai Han replied softly, her face flushing.
Madam Bai apologized, “This is my second daughter. She’s been living in the mountains all her life and is rather timid. I apologize for any inconvenience.”
Grandmother Huo smiled. “What a refined and pure young lady. She’s lovely.”
Huo Jianan chuckled. “Yes, she’s much more refined than me. I could never be as elegant as Second Young Miss Bai.”
Huo Jianan couldn’t help but marvel at the stark contrast between the two sisters: one domineering and arrogant, the other shy and easily flustered, their demeanors worlds apart.
Madam Bai said, “Of course they’re different. Miss Huo is an Alpha, and Alphas are naturally more energetic and spirited.” She then asked, “By the way, where’s Xien?”
Grandmother Huo said, “There was a little accident. Young people are always so impulsive. She’s still in the hospital, but thankfully, she’ll be discharged in a couple of days.”
Madam Bai offered a few more words of sympathy. Seizing the opportunity, Mr. Bai interjected, “Young people these days all value their individuality. They’re born rebels, each more reckless and impulsive than the last. Jianan, what happened that day was entirely Bai Ying’s fault. How could she throw a shoe at you? That’s no behavior for a young lady of good family!”
He paused for a few seconds. Bai Han took up the thread, “I’m sorry, Miss Huo. I apologize on behalf of my sister. It was truly inexcusable.” Her tone was sincere, her demeanor deferential, as if she herself had been the one to hurl the shoe at Huo Jianan.
Huo Jianan was momentarily taken aback, then quickly recovered. “It’s alright. You don’t need to apologize for your sister. It wasn’t your fault. Besides, it was such a trivial matter. I wouldn’t hold it against her.”
Grandmother Huo cleared her throat. Though reluctant, Huo Jianan offered an apology. “That day, I was rude to criticize your lawn. I hope Second Young Miss Bai will forgive me.”
Bai Han blushed. “No, it’s… it’s alright.”
Mr. Bai was quite pleased that this neither major nor minor conflict had been resolved amicably, avoiding both business complications and public embarrassment.
Madam Bai seized the opportunity to say, “Miss Huo, our Second Young Miss Bai is rather shy, and this is her first time visiting someone’s home. Would you mind showing her around the garden? We’re also considering switching to a different brand of lawn grass.”
“Yes, yes,” Mr. Bai chimed in. “That lawn is truly awful, full of prickles. I’ve been wanting to replace it for ages.”
Huo Jianan readily agreed. “Of course! I’d be happy to serve as your guide today.”
Bai Han volunteered, “Miss Huo, shall I push you in your wheelchair?”
“Wouldn’t that be too much trouble? I can have Xiaoman take care of that.”
Bai Han’s face flushed again. “No, it’s no trouble at all.”
“Then, thank you for your help, Miss Bai.” Huo Jianan called Xiaoman over and led Bai Han to the Huo Family Garden.
