- Chapter 62.1 - I've Actually Been Set Up Before?
Meng Xien was ready to be discharged from the hospital. She preferred to continue recovering there, but Grandmother Huo and Huo Jianan insisted she return home.
“Doctor Jiang will come daily to check on you,” Grandmother Huo said. “At home, you’ll have Housekeeper He, Xiao Tao, and Aunties Wang and Mei to care for you. You’ll be much more comfortable here.”
“That’s right, Sister Meng,” Jianan added. “Your sister-in-law won’t have to work so hard. Are you worried she’ll feel uncomfortable? Don’t worry about that. She’ll be marrying into the family eventually anyway. Let her get used to it early.”
Later that evening, after her bath, Min Jiru emerged, towel-drying her hair. She glanced up and noticed Meng Xien watching her.
“What is it?” Min Jiru asked, sitting down by the bed while continuing to dry her hair. “Are you feeling unwell? I can massage it for you.”
Her skin, naturally fair, glowed with a rosy hue after her bath, making her look even more delicate and lovely, like a finely crafted snow doll. Her clear eyes, gentle and graceful as a fawn’s, shone with warmth.
Meng Xien gazed into those eyes, took one of her hands, and placed it over his heart. “Minmin, let’s register our marriage, okay?”
Min Jiru was visibly startled. “What’s wrong?” she asked, biting her lip and the blush on her cheeks deepening. “I already promised to marry you, and I will. I won’t think about anything else.”
Meng Xien smiled. “I know you weren’t thinking anything improper. You just want to run away again. I’ll chase you to the ends of the earth if I have to, just to bring you back.”
“But you’re in such a state. How could you possibly catch me?”
“I’ll have Xiao Tao push me in my wheelchair. No matter where you hide, you won’t escape.” Meng Xien’s tone turned serious as she tightened her grip on Min Jiru’s soft, pale hand. “Let’s register soon. Then you can officially become my Madam and come to the Huo family to take care of me.”
Min Jiru was momentarily stunned, surprised by Meng Xien’s perceptiveness. She always seemed to accurately sense the hidden worries in her heart.
“If you don’t say anything, I’ll take it as a yes. My bandages will be removed tomorrow. I checked, and next Tuesday is a good day. Let’s go to the Civil Affairs Bureau then.”
She squeezed Min Jiru’s hand, her eyes shining with happiness. “Let’s get married, my Madam Min.”
“Okay, let’s get married,” Min Jiru nodded with a smile, a faint blush creeping across her nose.
Meng Xien was so delighted she nearly jumped up to hug her beloved girl. But she moved too quickly, jolting her bones, and she hissed in pain, frowning.
Min Jiru panicked. “Does it hurt? Should I call the doctor?”
“No, no need,” Meng Xien said, gripping her hand. “I suddenly crave soft candy. It’ll stop hurting once I have some.”
Min Jiru let out a soft snort, her face flushing crimson. She glanced around to ensure no one was watching, then tucked stray strands of hair behind her ear before shyly lowering her head to press her lips against Meng Xien’s.
As their affection deepened, she gently wrapped her arms around Meng Xien’s neck, her lips following hers as they drew closer, yielding completely to Meng Xien’s fervent kisses.
“Nannan, the Bai Family is hosting a charity gala in two days. Your Xien sister was supposed to attend, but she can’t go in her current condition. Would you like to go in her place?”
During dinner, Grandmother Huo mentioned the Bai Family’s charity event.
Grandmother Huo glanced at Huo Jianan. “If you don’t want to go, I’ll call Madam Bai to decline.”
“Will the Cheng and Li Families be attending?”
Changbin’s four most influential families were the Huo, Bai, Cheng, and Li Families, with the Huo and Bai Families being particularly prominent.
“Of course. Everyone will attend a Bai Family gala out of respect.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “Then I’ll go. It’s good to get familiar faces around.”
Grandmother Huo gave her granddaughter a surprised look, sensing a complete about-face in her attitude.
She cleared her throat. “At the party tonight, you might run into Bai Ying from the Bai Family. She rejected you before, but that’s all in the past now. You have Nianning now, so there’s no need to deliberately give her the cold shoulder or pick a fight.”
Huo Jianan was startled.
Bai Ying rejected me? Did the original owner of this body actually pursue her?
“Understood, Grandmother,” Huo Jianan replied. “I won’t cause any trouble with her. I don’t even know her.”
Grandmother Huo, who had just relaxed upon hearing the first part, shook her head at the second, dismissing it as her granddaughter’s petulant words.
The next evening, Huo Jianan called Wang Baobao to say she would resume her rehabilitation therapy the next day.
“Alright,” Wang Baobao replied. “I’ll pick you up from the company tomorrow.”
Without Assistant Min, Huo Jianan reassigned Assistant Ying from CEO Meng’s team to serve as her own assistant.
Someone at the company casually remarked, “Why are all our beauties absent? CEO Meng is hospitalized, and Assistant Min just resigned!”
The others expressed their regret. “Why did Assistant Min leave? She was doing well and hadn’t been mistreated by President Huo, had she?”
“Who knows? Maybe she married a rich husband and doesn’t need to work anymore.”
“Who said there are no beauties here?” someone asked. “Isn’t President Huo a top-tier beauty?”
“But President Huo… her legs…” another person trailed off.
“So what? If my girlfriend were as successful as President Huo, I’d marry her in a heartbeat!”
“You’re dreaming. You think you can compare to a big star like Ruan Nianning?”
Inside the office, Huo Jianan remained completely unaware that she had become the center of gossip. “Assistant Ying, please tell Director Ma to reschedule this afternoon’s meeting to tomorrow at 11:30 AM.”
“Right away, President Huo.”
“And tell Director Xiao I need that report by 9 AM tomorrow morning.”
As they spoke, Huo Jianan’s phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she answered. Whatever the person on the other end said, it clearly angered her. “Director Zhang, you’re already a department director. I don’t want to hear such excuses again.” She hung up with a stern expression.
Assistant Ying was taken aback. President Huo hadn’t been with the company long, but he had already noticed her gentle demeanor and sharp mind. However, when faced with subordinates who shirked their responsibilities or tried to get by with excuses, President Huo was far stricter than CEO Meng—more direct and less forgiving.
Seeing Huo Jianan was about to leave, Assistant Ying opened the office door. Huo Jianan wheeled herself out, smiling politely at the assistant. “Thank you!”
Once in the car, Wang Baobao glanced at Huo Jianan. “Dada, I’ve noticed something.”
“What is it?”
“You’re starting to look more and more like a big boss. You’ve got that killer’s aura.”
“Did I not have that before?”
“Then let me tell you the truth. Promise me you won’t go crazy.”
Huo Jianan found this amusing. If I really went crazy, how could I promise not to?
“Go on. I love hearing the truth. I promise I won’t go crazy.”
Wang Baobao mustered up his courage. “That wasn’t a killer’s aura before. That was just… irritability, madness, and pampered petulance.”
The moment he finished speaking, a thud rang out as Huo Jianan punched him in the stomach. Wang Baobao’s face contorted in pain, his expression innocent. “You—you said you wouldn’t get angry!”
“I hate hearing the truth, especially when it’s the truth I don’t want to hear. You’re the pampered one, not me.”
Wang Baobao scowled miserably, on the verge of tears.
As they drove to the hospital, Huo Jianan turned to business. “The Bai Family is hosting a charity gala the day after tomorrow. Are you aware of this?”
“I know. Our family got an invitation too. Are you going?”
Huo Jianan glanced at him furtively before looking away. “Ahem, do you think the Young Miss Bai will do anything to me?”
“Bai Ying?” Wang Baobao’s face twisted in disdain. “Good thing you two didn’t end up together. She’s an Omega, but she plays around more than an Alpha.”
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment. “Well, that’s fortunate she rejected me.”
Wang Baobao bristled on Jianan’s behalf. “It’s all because she’s got decent looks! Our Sister-in-law is a hundred times prettier than her! The Bai family were the ones who approached your Huo family for a marriage alliance in the first place. Your Grandmother didn’t want to agree, but when they heard the Huo Family Young Miss had returned from abroad, they insisted on arranging a meeting. You’d think they’d at least have the courtesy to exchange pleasantries, but when Bai Ying saw you arrive in your wheelchair, she turned on her heel without a word and left with a frosty expression.”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Of course people will mind my disability. I can’t blame them for not wanting to be with me.”
Wang Baobao was even angrier than Huo Jianan. “She’s the Bai Family Young Miss, and you’re the Huo Family Young Miss. Your family’s business is even bigger than theirs! To just walk away like that—how humiliating! And she goes around telling everyone that the Huo Family Young Miss is a cripple, a leg-disabled flower vase! With a mouth that venomous, it’s a good thing you two didn’t work out! Otherwise, I’d never call her ‘Sister-in-law’ even if you threatened me!”
Huo Jianan comforted her friend. “Forget it. I have nothing to do with her anymore.”
“Exactly! If Bai Ying’s parents hadn’t been sensible enough to apologize personally to your grandmother, she wouldn’t have even acknowledged them. Dada, it’s a good thing you two didn’t work out. Even heaven is helping you avoid disaster! Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been able to marry your own Sister-in-law!”
Huo Jianan thought of Ruan Nianning, recalling her adorable moments of clinging to her, acting spoiled, and playfully demanding kisses.
What she most appreciated about the original body’s owner was that he had managed to marry Nianning.
Huo Jianan leaned back, a gentle smile softening her usually stern expression. “Yeah, I really have to thank Bai Ying for looking down on me.”
Wang Baobao: “Do you know the rumor about the Bai Family?”
“What rumor?” Huo Jianan wasn’t interested in gossip and never sought it out.
“I heard they found the Bai Family’s Second Young Miss who had been lost among the common people. Maybe we’ll see her at the charity gala this time.”
“How did she end up among the common people?”
“Apparently, their nanny took her away. She claimed she was taking the child out to play, but she never returned. Rumor has it that the nanny was a deep well ice—a twisted person—and that she was influenced by some so-called master who told her to choose the Bai Family’s Second Young Miss as her future daughter-in-law.
Later, when the Bai Family reported the child missing and the matter became public, the nanny grew fearful. While fleeing back to her hometown, she casually abandoned the child along the way.
This incident sent shockwaves through families that hire nannies. Now, they don’t dare trust even referrals from acquaintances, let alone allow a nanny to take a child far away alone.”
Huo Jianan nodded and asked, “What happened to the Bai Family’s Second Young Miss in the end? Where was she found?”
“She ended up all the way in Province Y, apparently adopted by a couple in the mountains there. She must have suffered greatly,” Wang Baobao sighed. “Poor Second Young Miss Bai—such a tragedy for a well-bred young lady of the Bai Family to end up in the mountains. Fortunately, the Bai Family found her and she was able to return to her roots.”
Having taken a break from rehabilitation therapy, Huo Jianan found her first training session in a while extremely strenuous. After just one set of exercises, she was drenched in sweat, her legs trembling uncontrollably.
“Wang Baobao: “Jiangjiang, why is Dada like this?”
“She’s been out of practice for too long. This reaction is normal.”
Jiang Shumin inserted several acupuncture needles into her legs and gently massaged them.
Huo Jianan immediately felt the pain subside. “Doctor Jiang, you know acupuncture too?”
“I learned it from a friend of mine who’s a master acupuncturist. I happened to be interested in it, so I picked up a few things from her.”
Wang Baobao, concerned about his girlfriend’s struggle, went out to buy bubble tea. “Dada, rest for a bit. When I get back, I’ll help you with the exercises.”
Jiang Shumin: “I’ll take a hot one.”
Wang Baobao chimed in: “Got it! Regular tea base, add boba, no sugar.” With that, he dashed out like a gust of wind.
Huo Jianan chuckled: “Doctor Jiang, without all those additions, is that even bubble tea?”
Jiang Shumin laughed. “I’m not sure either. Baobao always insists on buying me bubble tea, knowing he secretly grabs a small cake while he’s at it. He’s been working hard to lose weight, and I keep a close eye on his diet, so he probably craves sweets. I don’t mind, so I let him get away with it.”
“No wonder she’s so eager to buy you milk tea,” Huo Jianan laughed heartily. “Doctor Jiang, after spending time with her, haven’t you found Wang Baobao to be a true treasure? He’s genuinely sweet and harmless.”
Jiang Shumin chuckled softly, her eyes filled with warmth. “Yes, he’s quite simple-minded. Sometimes he’s even a little foolish, just like a big baby.”
With no one else around, Jiang Shumin asked, “Miss Huo, why haven’t you told your Madam about your ongoing leg rehabilitation? She cares deeply about you. During our coffee shop meal, she even asked about new medications and technologies. She said she’d encourage you to accept treatment. If you told her, she’d be thrilled to support you.”
Huo Jianan was surprised but smiled warmly, her features softening. “But then there wouldn’t be any surprise left.”
Jiang Shumin continued, “After your evening injection, your Madam could massage your legs. That would make it much easier than doing it alone.”
“But if they don’t know, even if I try my hardest and still can’t stand up, I’ll be the only one who’s sad. Grandmother and Nianning don’t need to experience that disappointment again.”
Jiang Shumin was stunned. After a few seconds, she said, “Miss Huo, you will definitely stand up.”
“Yes! I believe that too!” Huo Jianan smiled, her bright eyes filled with conviction. “I will definitely stand up! I will!”
She imagined herself rising from her wheelchair, stepping into the sunlight, walking through the fragrant blossoms and grass, accompanied by a gentle breeze. Step by step, she approached Ruan Nianning, who would look at her in astonished shock. They would embrace, and Ruan Nianning would kiss her, hug her, and laugh with delighted surprise.
Huo Jianan was also handed a cup of milk tea.
Wang Baobao said, “I’m on a diet, so I can’t have milk tea. You just keep Jiangjiang company while she drinks hers. Otherwise, she’ll get bored drinking alone.”
