- Chapter 59 - The Life-Giving Soup
At the grand dining table, Grandmother Huo sat alone for breakfast.
She glanced at the table laden with a mix of Chinese and Western breakfast dishes, then noticed the empty seats on either side. “Where are the Young Miss and the Young Madam?” she asked Housekeeper He.
“They’re probably still asleep. I just checked, and their curtains are still drawn.”
“Still drawn?” Grandmother Huo’s face lit up with delight. “Excellent, excellent! Don’t disturb their rest.”
“Yes, Madam.”
“Tell the kitchen to carefully prepare Jianan’s soup. Add a bit of sugar to mask the bitterness. It’s perfect timing to nourish her while the Young Madam is here.”
Housekeeper He smiled knowingly. “Yes, Madam. Perhaps in a couple of months, the Young Madam will have some good news.”
Grandmother Huo’s smile widened. “Our family is finally going to grow! Once Xien recovers, we’ll make soup for her too.”
“Of course, Madam.”
Huo Jianan lay in bed, wrapped around her wife, sleeping soundly until 9 a.m. When she finally stirred, her arms ached. Moving further, her back protested.
Huo Jianan lifted the quilt and slowly sat up. Looking down, she saw her chest, shoulders, and arms covered in red marks. She gasped. So Wolfie really is a wolf—she’s bitten me all over.
Embarrassed to look further, she glanced at Wolfie beside her. The woman’s body was covered in even more red marks, not a single patch of unmarked skin, especially around her glands, where a ring of bite marks stood out.
Feeling guilty, Huo Jianan averted her gaze. Compared to Wolfie, I must have bitten her even harder.
She slowly shifted to get out of bed and grab her clothes, but a hand suddenly wrapped around her waist and yanked her back. Huo Jianan stumbled and fell into a soft embrace.
“Why are you getting up so early? Don’t move. Stay and keep me company.”
“It’s not early anymore. It’s already 9 o’clock.”
“Already 9?” The person lazily opened their eyes, revealing a pair of beautiful, deep brown eyes still heavy with sleep.
Just the mention of it made Ruan Nianning angry. She had only bitten Huo Jianan once, but Huo Jianan had bitten her three times, even biting her gland until it hurt.
“Hmph, you still have the nerve to talk?” Ruan Nianning bit down on the muscle of Huo Jianan’s shoulder.
“Ouch!” Huo Jianan yelped. “Wife, you bit me again?”
Ruan Nianning released her grip.
Huo Jianan rubbed the row of teeth marks on her shoulder and sat up. On the bedside table was a tube of ointment—something she had sent Xiaoman to buy, following the instructions in a pamphlet.
She picked up the ointment, twisted open the cap, and gently applied a bit to Ruan Nianning’s gland, massaging it in with tender fingers.
“Wife, I’m so sorry,” Huo Jianan said, her voice thick with remorse, her touch impossibly gentle. “Wife, I’ll control myself from now on. I’ll be gentler with my bites.”
The cool ointment seeped into the gland, its soothing sensation making Ruan Nianning close her eyes like a contented kitten.
“Jianan.”
“Hmm?”
“Will you always be this good to me?”
“Even when I’m old, no longer beautiful, and my figure has changed?”
“Absolutely. You’re my wife, the person closest to me in this world. When I say I’ll be good to you for a lifetime, I mean it. When we’re old, I’ll spoil you even more.”
“Why more?”
“When we’re older, our children will be grown up and have their own families and lives. Then I’ll have to spoil you even more, including the share that used to go to the children.”
Ruan Nianning’s long lashes lowered, hiding her expression. Only her upward-curving, contented smile remained visible.
“Jianan, you must never cheat or fall for someone else. If you do, I’ll be furious and never forgive you!”
Huo Jianan jumped in surprise. “Why say that? I’m not some fickle scoundrel!”
“I know. I’m just being preemptive, giving you a warning shot.”
Huo Jianan shook her head. “Then rest assured. I’m naturally immune to infidelity. Whoever I end up loving in this life will be the only one for me.”
Finding the taste pleasing, she began nibbling gently with her fine teeth, occasionally flicking the skin with the tip of her tongue. “In the next life, you’ll still be mine!”
Seeing Ruan Nianning’s earnest expression, her bright eyes brimming with anticipation, Huo Jianan felt her heart’s softest place being touched.
Yet she teased, “Can’t I choose someone else in the next life?”
Ruan Nianning froze, her eyes welling up with tears as she looked at Huo Jianan, hurt and aggrieved. “Why don’t you want me?”
Before Huo Jianan could answer, a sharp pain shot through her neck as Ruan Nianning bit down hard on her pale, delicate skin. Her voice was a mix of hurt, anger, and urgency. “No! You can’t choose someone else! This life, the next life, all future lives—you’ll be my wife!”
She was like a cat with its fur bristling.
“Let go, let go! You’re hurting me. There’s a major artery in my neck—you could really bite me to death!”
“Will you promise?” Ruan Nianning clamped down like a dog holding onto a bone, refusing to release her grip.
Ruan Nianning finally released her, satisfied. “So we’re agreed?”
“We’re agreed!” Huo Jianan smiled faintly, her eyes clear and pure, her gaze soft as water, her smile tender.
Ruan Nianning wrapped her arms around Huo Jianan’s neck, tilted her head back, and kissed her, biting down on her lip.
“Wife, mmph, stop biting—it really hurts.”
Ruan Nianning stopped biting, chuckling softly. Her smile was sweet and affectionate, like an angel’s. She tightened her embrace around Huo Jianan and deepened the kiss with another smile.
Huo Jianan couldn’t focus on work that day. Ruan Nianning was unusually clingy, insisting on staying by her side. Whenever there were no meetings, she sat on Huo Jianan’s lap, draped over her, or lay softly in her arms, alternately kissing her neck or nibbling her earlobe, all while looking innocent and saying, “Just focus on your work—I won’t bother you.”
“Wife, why don’t you go get something to eat or have a coffee?”
“No, I’m not hungry. Eating randomly will make me gain weight.”
“Then why don’t you take a nap and rest up?”
“I’ve slept enough—I can’t sleep anymore.”
“There’s nothing good on. Nothing I want to watch.”
“Want to play a game? I have so many here. Pick one and have fun.”
“Playing games is so boring.”
Finally, while Huo Jianan was reviewing reports, Ruan Nianning kept pestering her. Jianan finally couldn’t take it anymore and chased the mischievous kitten out.
“First, run ten kilometers on the treadmill. Then work out for an hour. Finally, go to the garden and pick three bouquets of flowers to arrange. One for Grandmother’s health and safety, one for prosperity and good fortune at home, and ours will be…”
Before she could finish, Ruan Nianning jumped down from her lap with a bright smile, her long legs stretching out in front of her like a self-assured sprite. “Ours will be for a beautiful and perfect love. Wait here—I’ll amaze you!”
Huo Jianan watched her dash out, leaving a gust of wind in her wake, and shook her head with a smile. Though her work was seriously behind, her Nianning was truly happy right now.
That evening, when Grandmother Huo returned home and saw the large vase of arranged flowers on the dining table, she exclaimed, “Who made this arrangement? It’s stunning—so elegant and grand!”
Huo Jianan smiled. “Grandmother, isn’t this flower arrangement beautiful? Doesn’t it show how clever and skilled Nianning is?”
Grandmother Huo laughed. “Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Nianning has excellent craftsmanship and a keen sense of aesthetics!”
“See that, Grandmother is praising you,” Huo Jianan said to Ruan Nianning, a hint of smugness in her eyes. “If her sense of aesthetics weren’t good, she wouldn’t have chosen me as her granddaughter, right? Wife, isn’t that true?”
Ruan Nianning blushed slightly. “No need to be modest. With Grandmother here, who would brag about their own beauty?”
“Grandmother said it herself—ever since Grandmother Songzhi’s time, our family has carried exceptional genes. Every Alpha in our lineage is strikingly beautiful.”
Grandmother Huo watched with amusement, pleased to see the girls’ relationship had significantly improved since before their marriage, and even more so compared to the early days after they wed. The warmth between them had grown steadily, bringing her great satisfaction.
Housekeeper He brought over a bowl of soup. “Jianan, this soup is specially prepared for you. With Xien hospitalized and the company affairs piling up, you’ve been working hard lately. Make sure you finish it all.”
Huo Jianan took a sip, finding the taste somewhat indescribable, with a strong herbal flavor.
“Grandmother, what kind of soup is this?” She couldn’t bring herself to take another sip.
Huo Jianan heard it was a good soup and offered it to Nianning.
Grandmother Huo quickly stopped her. “Nianning has her own. She’s a big star and needs to watch her figure. This soup isn’t suitable for her. You drink it.”
Huo Jianan didn’t think much of it and gulped it down in a few sips.
That evening, Ruan Nianning didn’t bother her. After running 10 kilometers and working out for an hour, she was genuinely exhausted. She showered and obediently fell asleep on the bed.
Meanwhile, Huo Jianan, working in the study, felt increasingly unwell. Her entire body felt feverish; even turning the air conditioning down several degrees didn’t help. Along with the burning heat, there was a dull, aching pressure in her lower abdomen.
After struggling to work for an hour, the unbearable heat forced her to take a shower and go to bed.
Just as she was about to settle in, Ruan Nianning turned over and wrapped her arm around her, pressing close.
This was the lifeline Huo Jianan had been waiting for.
Her wife’s arm against her felt so cool and soothing.
Huo Jianan pulled her wife fully into her embrace. The moment their skin touched, a wave of heat surged through her. Holding this soft, pliant body felt like embracing jade—utterly delightful. Her hands, restless, began tugging at her wife’s nightgown.
But Huo Jianan wasn’t tired at all; in fact, she was wide awake and wanted to do that with Ruan Nianning.
“Darling, let’s do it,” Huo Jianan whispered, nibbling on Ruan Nianning’s pink ear.
Ruan Nianning mumbled incoherently, squirming away. “So tired…”
Seeing Ruan Nianning’s eyes barely able to stay open, Huo Jianan relented. She released her wife, straightened out her nightgown, and retreated to the other side of the bed. Staring at the moonlight streaming through the window, she sighed softly.
Huo Jianan barely slept that night. She drank three bottles of water and kept getting up to use the bathroom. Her leg disability made the constant climbing in and out of bed inconvenient, so she eventually settled in the bathroom and stayed there.
The next morning, Ruan Nianning, who had slept soundly, got up and went to the bathroom. She was startled to find Huo Jianan asleep in her wheelchair next to the toilet. “Jianan, what are you doing here?”
“I drank too much water last night and kept needing to use the bathroom. I sat here and ended up falling asleep.”
“It’s all Grandma’s fault. That soup must have been spiked. After drinking it, I felt so restless and hot, like I wanted to do something naughty. I just couldn’t sleep.”
“Why didn’t you wake me?”
“You were sleeping so soundly. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
Ruan Nianning felt both touched and worried. “With your leg condition, if you need to use the restroom at night, just call me. Don’t worry about waking me. And… for that other thing, you can wake me too. I can cooperate with you just this once.”
“No way. I can’t go against my wife’s wishes, even if you are my wife.”
“Silly! Drinking so much water and risking an accident in the middle of the night… What would Grandma do if something happened? What about me?”
Ruan Nianning was a little angry, frustrated by her lack of judgment. Something as simple as waking her could have prevented this unnecessary risk.
Her leg disabilities made everyday tasks—climbing in and out of bed, squatting to use the toilet, standing up—challenges that most people took for granted. At night, when her energy was low, a moment of inattention could lead to accidents: falls, chin injuries, head injuries.
“Alright, Wife,” Huo Jianan said, tugging at her wrist to appease her. “From now on, if I need to use the restroom at night, I’ll call you.” She added pitifully, “Wife, let’s go out. I’ve been stuck in the bathroom all night. I miss my big bed.”
“No way, Wife! You’re so ruthless!”
“Didn’t you call me Wolfie? Tell me, am I ruthless?” Despite her words, Ruan Nianning swiftly pushed Huo Jianan to the bed, helped her lie down, tucked her in, and climbed in beside her, wrapping her arms around Huo Jianan to warm her with her body heat.
At the hospital, Min Jiru sat beside Meng Xien, feeding her fruit. The two chatted animatedly, filling the room with laughter.
“Sister Meng, Sister-in-law, what are you talking about? You sound so happy!”
“You’re here! Meng Xien and I were reminiscing about our high school days.” Meng Xien turned and noticed Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning’s intertwined fingers. Smiling, she teased, “Now that Nianning has a few days off, Jianan should stay home and keep her company instead of visiting me every day.”
“Sister Meng, I’ve been eagerly waiting for you to recover so you can help Grandmother and me at the company. I’m drowning in meetings and reports!”
After chatting for a while, Min Jiru announced that the doctor had checked and confirmed Meng Xien was recovering well and could be discharged next week.
Meng Xien glanced at Min Jiru. “Let’s discuss that when the time comes.”
As Min Jiru escorted Huo Jianan out, Jianan asked, “Has your mother repaid Zhang Kai’s debt to the Zhang family?”
“Yes, we went together yesterday.”
Yesterday, Mother Min had appeared at the Zhang family’s company with her daughter, exuding confidence.
Zhang Kai sneered, “So you finally show your face?! Do you know what your daughter did? She was my fiancée, yet she betrayed me and got involved with someone else before we could even marry. Do you really think a shameless, fickle woman like that deserves to enter our Zhang family? I wouldn’t even let her polish my boots!”
“Bullshit! Watch your filthy mouth!” Mother Min straightened her back, her previous subservience to the Zhang family completely vanished. “That man is my daughter’s true soulmate—they’re a perfect match! Who do you think you are? Don’t forget that you change girlfriends like you change clothes, and you have countless women on the outside. Do you really think I’d push my daughter into that inferno? You think you can marry my daughter? Keep dreaming!”
“So what? A hundred million? Who can’t afford that?” Mother Min casually pulled out her phone and instructed her finance manager to transfer the funds.
Zhang Kai’s face turned green with fury. “Just you wait! You’ll pay for this!”
“Oh, am I supposed to be afraid of you? Do you know who my daughter is marrying? The CEO of Huo Corporation! She’s both beautiful and capable—hundreds of times better than you worthless trash!”
Zhang Kai was stunned. “Huo Corporation?!” His arrogant demeanor vanished instantly.
“Everyone knows the Changbin Huo Corporation!” Mother Min declared. She had endured the Zhang family’s snobbery for too long, and now that she had this rare opportunity to crush them, she seized it. But Min Jiru pulled her away. “Mom! Stop it! The debt is settled—let it go! We have no further ties to them. Just drop it.”
“Why stop? I’m giving you some dignity!”
“Enough! Talking more will just make us look petty. Let’s go.”
Hearing this, Mother Min quickly regained her composure. After all, her daughter was about to become part of the prestigious Huo family. She needed to maintain her dignity.
“Speaking of which, dear, your taste is impeccable! Look at Xien. Even though he doesn’t share the Huo surname, Old Madam Huo dotes on him. Why else would she appoint him CEO? The wealth Old Madam Huo will bestow upon Xien will far surpass anything the Zhang family could offer. How did you two even meet?”
“Mom, please stop asking,” Min Jiru said, exasperated by her mother’s constant obsession with money and her fixation on marrying into wealth. “Even if Xien were penniless, just an ordinary office worker, I’d still choose him over anyone else. I’ll never marry anyone else.”
“Fine, fine, fine! I’m worldly, and you two have ‘true love’! Happy now?”
“And Mom, stop making reckless investments. Focus on growing our small business and leasing out the shops. Even with the Huo family’s backing, they won’t keep bailing you out with millions every time you make a mess.”
“Ugh, I know, I know! Your mother isn’t senile. Stop nagging.”
Huo Jianan waved her hand dismissively. “No need for repayment. To be honest, I don’t have that much money myself. This was given to me by Grandmother. She said Sister Meng is also her granddaughter, so Sister-in-law, don’t feel guilty. Just focus on taking care of your sister and being our family’s Young Madam.”
A faint blush rose on Min Jiru’s cheeks. “Thank you, President Huo. Thank you, Aunt Xu. Thank you!”
Ruan Nianning and Huo Jianan left the hospital room. Ruan Nianning pushed Huo Jianan’s wheelchair out into the sunlight.
The winter sun was warm and gentle, its rays warming their skin. It was a rare beautiful day.
Ruan Nianning suggested, “The weather’s nice today. Let’s take a walk outside.”
“Sounds good. Let’s go sit in the garden.”
It was already past New Year’s Day, and only a month remained until the Lunar New Year. As they sat on the hospital bench, they looked up and saw the bold words on the LED billboard of the building across the street: “Happy New Year!”
Huo Jianan remarked, “In a few days, it’ll change to ‘Happy Lunar New Year’.”
Ruan Nianning smiled wistfully. “How time flies. Another year is already coming to an end.”
“It depends on the production schedule. I should be able to make it, but if they need to rush the filming…” Ruan Nianning sounded a bit regretful. “Then I’ll have to stay with the crew.”
“It’s okay. I’ll fly over to keep you company.” Huo Jianan took her hand, her warm palm covering Ruan Nianning’s snow-white skin. Ruan Nianning gently tugged her hand, leaning softly against her shoulder, and closed her eyes, basking in the warm winter sun.
“Jianan, the sun doesn’t have a scent. It’s your presence that fills the air with warmth.”
Huo Jianan chuckled softly. “Does it smell nice?”
Ruan Nianning nodded. “Yes, it’s clean and comforting, as soft as cotton.”
Huo Jianan tightened her grip. “Wife, focus on your filming. I’ll investigate your mother’s death.”
Ruan Nianning opened her eyes and sat up straight. “Didn’t you say the book never revealed how my mother died, or who my true enemy is?”
“I think Sister Meng might know more about your mother’s death.”
Meng Xien definitely knew something. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have told me those things over the phone right before she jumped off the bridge that night.
“Wife, what exactly do you know about your mother’s death? I’ll definitely help you get to the bottom of this.”
