- Chapter 57.1 - One Hundred Million
In the afternoon, Huo Jianan coaxed Ruan Nianning into taking a nap. After returning to the study, she continued reviewing documents on her computer when she unexpectedly received a call from Wang Baobao.
“Dada, how’s Sister Meng doing? When will you start your recovery training and therapy?”
Huo Jianan replied, “Not this week. My wife is home, and I need to be with her. Besides, Sister Meng is hospitalized recovering from her injuries, and there’s been a huge increase in work at the company. I just can’t find the time this week.”
“Alright, then you must start next week. Doctor Jiang said that if you delay too long, your progress will be severely hindered, and you’ll have to start over from scratch.”
“Let’s visit Sister Meng together tomorrow. She wants to thank you in person.”
“Sure, but there’s no need for thanks. I’ll go with you tomorrow. Hahaha, and while we’re at it, let’s surprise Doctor Jiang and have lunch with her.”
Huo Jianan chuckled at Wang Baobao’s repeated references to “Doctor Jiang.” “When are you going to bring Doctor Jiang into the family? I’ll definitely give you a fat red envelope then.”
Wang Baobao laughed even more heartily. “Still a ways off. It’s almost the New Year, so probably not until next year at the earliest. When the time comes, I won’t hold back. You’re so rich—thanks in advance!”
The next day, Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning went to the hospital with Wang Baobao to visit Meng Xien.
Although Meng Xien was immobilized from head to toe, looking like a tire man, her spirits were clearly much improved.
Huo Jianan glanced around the room and, noticing Min Jiru’s absence, asked, “Where’s Sister-in-law? Why isn’t she here with you?”
“She went back to her place to pack. It’s not safe there, and I’m worried about trouble, so I asked her to stay temporarily in my apartment. Xiao Tao went with her.”
Meng Xien thanked Wang Baobao, but before she could finish speaking, Xiao Tao called.
Meng Xien’s fingers could still move, but even lifting her arms was difficult. Huo Jianan held the phone, unlocked it, and pressed it to Meng Xien’s ear.
Xiao Tao’s agitated voice blared from the speaker, loud enough for everyone to hear without speaker mode.
“Miss Meng, a group of rough-looking men have shown up at Miss Min’s place! They’re demanding she repay a debt and threatening to keep her there if she doesn’t!”
Worried about Min Jiru’s safety and frustrated by her immobility, Meng Xien said, “Ask them who their boss is. Tell them their boss should come talk to me about the debt.”
“Miss Meng, I’m so scared! They’re being so unreasonable and rude!”
Before Meng Xien could say more, Huo Jianan took the phone. “Tell them to wait. Tell them the person to repay the debt is on their way. If they dare leave, they won’t get a single cent.”
After hanging up, Huo Jianan turned to Meng Xien. “Sister Meng, I’ll head over now. Just tell me where Sister-in-law lives.”
“Jianan, are you sure you can handle this?” Meng Xien asked, worry etched on her face. She glanced involuntarily at Huo Jianan’s disabled legs, concerned for Min Jiru’s safety.
“It’s fine. They just want money. A few thugs? I’m not afraid of them.”
Wang Baobao spoke up, “Dada, I’ll go with you.”
Ruan Nianning also volunteered to go, but Huo Jianan said, “Stay here and keep Sister company. Baobao and I will handle this.”
Upon arriving at Hefeng Court, they found a thug keeping watch downstairs. Seeing the group approach, he quickly ran upstairs to inform his boss.
As Wang Baobao pushed Huo Jianan up the stairs, they counted five men inside: two at the door and three surrounding Min Jiru and Xiao Tao on the sofa.
Xiao Tao, spotting Huo Jianan, cried out like a drowning woman seeing a lifeline. “Young Miss! It’s them! They’re trapping us here and won’t let us leave!”
Huo Jianan demanded, “Which of you is the boss here?”
A man in his forties, seated at the table across from the sofa, turned around. “I am.”
“Alright, then,” Huo Jianan said calmly. “You want money. I’m here now, and you won’t get a single penny less than you’re owed. You can release them now.”
The man looked Huo Jianan up and down. “Who are you?”
Wang Baobao sneered. “Are you new to Changbin? If you don’t even recognize Young Miss Huo from the wealthiest family in town, you might as well quit while you’re ahead.”
The man paused, reevaluating the person in the wheelchair. “You’re from the Changbin Huo family?”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “I’m Huo Jianan. I don’t care how much my sister-in-law owes you; I can afford to pay it. Money is trivial. But detaining her and preventing her from leaving is going too far. If you think this isn’t the right place to talk, let’s go to the police station instead.”
The man smiled obsequiously. “No need for that, Miss Huo. It’s just a small matter. We didn’t mean any trouble. A friend asked us to remind Miss Min that her ex-fiancé owes him ten million yuan, principal and interest. We’re just here to give a friendly reminder.”
“Ten million? I’ll give it to you. I wonder, how much did he promise you for successfully collecting the debt?”
“Just some travel expenses and hard work fees—about a million yuan.”
“I’ll give you two million, on one condition: make sure he remembers this twice as well.”
Huo Jianan had asked the doctor, and he confirmed that Meng Xien’s injuries included not only falls but also blows, especially to the head. The head injuries were so severe that she must have been struck before falling from the Changbin Bridge.
The man who had beaten Sister Meng was none other than Zhang Kai, that shameless ex-fiancé of Min Jiru.
“Zhang Kai beat my sister and frightened my sister-in-law. My sister has a fractured bone and is hospitalized, needing to be bedridden for at least a month. The Huo Family has never tolerated such bullying.”
When the man heard about the additional 2 million yuan, it was like manna from heaven. “Miss Huo is straightforward and generous. I’ll definitely give him double the lesson—no, no, no, I mean double the memory. I’ll make him bedridden for two months.”
Huo Jianan nodded in satisfaction. “May I ask how you prefer to be addressed, sir?”
“You flatter me.” The man handed her his business card. Huo Jianan glanced at it: Longxing Tianxia Financial Services Co., Ltd.—General Manager Long Kun.
“So it’s Brother Long. Once that man gets his double memory, I’ll have someone deliver the 2 million to you.”
“Good, good, good. It’s my duty. We won’t bother you any further today. Farewell.”
Long Kun stood up, signaling his subordinates to prepare for departure.
Huo Jianan: “Brother Long, this is our first meeting, and I’ve treated you with courtesy. If you show such disrespect to my family again, don’t blame me for losing my temper.”
“No, no, no,” Brother Long said with an apologetic smile. “I didn’t recognize a great man when I saw one. My eyes failed me.”
After Brother Long left, Xiao Tao let out a long sigh of relief. “That was terrifying! Those men stormed in, shouting and yelling at Miss Min, so fierce and threatening! It scared me half to death!” She clutched her chest, her heart still pounding wildly.
“Alright, Xiao Tao, don’t worry anymore. They’re gone now. Just help Miss Min carry the bags to the car.”
Min Jiru thanked him. “Thank you, President Huo. I’ll just take some clothes with me.”
Wang Baobao saw Xiao Tao struggling with four or five bags and hurried over to help. “Xiao Taozi, let me help you.”
“Miss Wang! You’re so kind! Oh my, you’ve lost so much weight!”
“Hahaha, really? Did my weight loss look that effective?”
“It’s very noticeable! If I saw you on the street, I wouldn’t even recognize you!”
The two chatted and laughed as they rode the elevator down.
Min Jiru felt awkward. Her ex-fiancé had come to demand payment, and her future sister-in-law had witnessed it—and even helped resolve the situation.
“President Huo, thank you. Xien will repay the hundred million,” Min Jiru said. She could accept Meng Xien repaying the debt, but not Huo Jianan.
“Don’t be so formal. Ten million to get away from that scum? That’s a pretty good deal. Sister Meng is still recovering in the hospital and can’t move around easily. Arrange a meeting with that scum and have him repay the money in the next couple of days. That way, you can focus on taking care of Sister Meng.”
As they spoke, a middle-aged woman stormed into the room, followed by a heavily made-up young woman—Qian Lu.
“Min Jiru, what are you doing? You were hiding here all along! Why didn’t you tell me when I asked? So you really were here, messing around with someone!”
Amid the woman’s furious scolding, Qian Lu lowered her head, a smug smile playing on her lips. But when she looked up again, her face was innocent. “Jiru, I’m sorry, don’t blame me! Auntie was so anxious to find you. She kept saying she was in a terrible hurry, and I had no choice but to bring her here.”
She turned to the middle-aged woman, coaxing, “Auntie, don’t be angry. Let’s talk calmly. Even if Jiru did something wrong, I’m sure she didn’t mean to upset you.”
Huo Jianan, standing nearby, inwardly cursed: What a masterful performance!
Selling out a friend while feigning innocence, stirring up trouble, and fanning the flames—this must be the legendary Thousand-Year Green Lotus Tea King!
Mother Min glared at Huo Jianan. “Was it you?! You’re the one who ruined my daughter!”
Recognizing her as Min Jiru’s mother, Huo Jianan restrained her anger. “Auntie, please watch your language. I’m her friend, here to visit her today. Don’t jump to conclusions and hurl accusations without understanding the situation. It’s disrespectful, especially since she’s your daughter.”
“Hmph! You cripple! You disabled freak! Who asked you how to raise my daughter? What right do you have to interfere in our family matters?!”
Huo Jianan: “……”
This unreasonable shrew was ten times more destructive than Brother Long had been earlier.
“Mom! What are you saying?” Min Jiru frowned. “How can you be so rude?”
Mother Min, unwilling to acknowledge the “cripple,” turned to her daughter and unleashed a torrent of accusations. “Are you trying to destroy me? The Zhang Family called, saying you’ve been sleeping around. They don’t want you as their daughter-in-law anymore and demand immediate repayment. I didn’t believe it at first, but look at this mess now! You actually did it!”
The middle-aged woman grew increasingly agitated, her voice rising shrilly. “You disgraceful creature! How could you marry a cripple?! You’re trying to drive me to an early grave! What’s wrong with the Zhang family? They’re rich! You could have been a Young Madam, living a life of luxury! Instead, you insist on wallowing in filth here!”
As her mother’s insults grew more vile, Min Jiru flushed with shame. “Mother! Stop it! That’s going too far!”
“My God! What am I going to do? Now their family wants to break off the engagement and demand their money back! Are you trying to kill me? A hundred million! A hundred million! Where am I supposed to get a hundred million?!”
The woman paced anxiously, then furiously threw the neatly folded clothes on the sofa to the floor, stomping on them.
“You want me dead! What was the point of raising you all these years? Now you’re trying to kill me!”
Min Jiru endured the overwhelming humiliation. “Mother, I’ll find a way to get that hundred million. I’ll repay the Zhang family! This house was left to me by Grandmother Huo. If we sell it now, we can get at least thirty million.”
“What about the remaining 70 million? What do you plan to do about it?! What can you possibly do? Do you really expect this cripple to help? Is she some kind of worthless trash?”
“Mom! Stop talking! How could you say such things! That’s so disrespectful!” Min Jiru, mortified, apologized to Huo Jianan. “President Huo, I’m so sorry. Please accept my mother’s apology.”
President Huo?!
