- Chapter 53.1 - Jumping off Changbin Bridge
Meng Xien and Min Jiru walked hand in hand after watching a movie.
Min Jiru asked, “How did you manage to find time for a movie today?”
Meng Xien replied, “It’s Friday, remember? We were supposed to have dinner at my place tonight so you could meet Superstar Ruan in person. But Aunt Xu had an emergency, so the dinner’s been postponed to tomorrow at noon.”
Meng Xien, thinking about how tomorrow’s gathering would be the perfect opportunity for Min Jiru to meet everyone formally, smiled brightly. “Minmin, don’t worry about tomorrow. You’ve already met Aunt Xu, and you know Jianan. As for Nianning, she’s not the type to put on airs. You’ll be sisters-in-law eventually, so you might hit it off right away.”
Meng Xien continued excitedly, but Min Jiru remained silent, her head bowed against Meng Xien’s shoulder.
“What’s wrong, Minmin? You seem upset.”
“No, I’m not upset,” Min Jiru said with a forced smile. “Xien, I’m just surprised you’d be willing to introduce me as your girlfriend to Aunt Xu. I don’t know how to feel.”
“Even if there were some past misunderstandings, as long as we’re genuinely in love, Aunt Xu won’t object. She’s always been like a grandmother to you.”
“But… my mother and I did such terrible things in the past…”
Min Jiru was about to say more when Meng Xien interrupted her. “It’s all in the past. I don’t mind, so Aunt Xu certainly wouldn’t say anything.”
Min Jiru looked at Meng Xien, who was as gentle as ever. “Xien, you’re so kind.”
Meng Xien curled her lips into a small smile. “I’m not perfect. I’ve made mistakes too. I’m just trying to do better.”
Her voice trailed off. Min Jiru suddenly stopped, turned around, and hugged her tightly, burying her face in Meng Xien’s arms and remaining silent for a long moment.
“What’s wrong, Minmin?” Meng Xien asked, sensing that Min Jiru had become unusually anxious ever since she mentioned bringing her home to meet her family. But every time she asked, Min Jiru insisted everything was fine.
“Does meeting Aunt Xu make you nervous? If so, we can postpone it. I’ll go to tomorrow’s family dinner alone, and you can stay home and rest.”
“No, that’s not it. I’m not afraid of meeting Aunt Xu.” Min Jiru lifted her head, her large, expressive eyes glistening with tears, the rims red and swollen.
Meng Xien was startled by the tears in her eyes. “Minmin, why are you crying? What’s wrong? Please tell me.”
“I’m just… too happy. We’re finally together, and I love the way you hold me, kiss me, and stay by my side. But I’m afraid this happiness won’t last— that it might end someday.”
“Foolish girl, why would it suddenly end? Where does this tragic sense of fate come from?” Meng Xien held her, gently stroking her hair. “Didn’t I tell you? Aunt Xu won’t oppose us. We’ve just started being together, and we have a long future ahead. Don’t scare yourself like that, okay?”
“Mm,” Min Jiru whimpered, clinging tightly to Meng Xien. “Xien, I love you. I’ve liked you since I was seventeen, only you, for a lifetime.”
“Me too.” Meng Xien tightened her embrace around this sensitive and sentimental girl. “Me too. I fell for you the moment I saw you, and I’ve never forgotten you. Even if you don’t want me anymore, I still can’t forget you. In this life, I’ll only like you, only love you, and only want you to be my wife.”
“Xien…” Min Jiru sobbed harder. “Xien, I really can’t bear to part from you.”
“If you can’t bear to part, then let’s stay together for a lifetime.”
Meng Xien smiled, straightened up, and gently wiped away the tears on her face. “Don’t cry, Minmin. No matter what happens, I won’t leave you.”
Min Jiru hummed in agreement, paying no mind to the scattered pedestrians still on the street. She stood on tiptoe and kissed Meng Xien first.
Hand in hand, they returned to Hefeng Residence. The gatekeeper, recognizing her, leaned out and said, “Miss Min, Miss Qian is here to see you.”
“I know,” Min Jiru replied. “You called me earlier.”
As they entered the community, Meng Xien asked, “Qian Lu came looking for you again?”
“Mm-hmm. She texted me, saying she wanted to bring something over. She’s probably waiting in her car.” Min Jiru pulled out her phone and called Qian Lu, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Min Jiru looked puzzled. Meng Xien suggested, “Maybe she’s chatting with someone she knows. Let’s go home first, and you can try calling her again later.”
As they entered Building 10, a figure in a black hooded sweatshirt emerged from the shadows of the landscaping. The hood was pulled tight, obscuring her features, but her phone vibrated with another incoming call, which she promptly ignored.
She tilted her head back to look up the building. As she moved, the hood slipped, revealing a heavily made-up face—Qian Lu.
Her gaze lingered on the living room window of unit 901. Moments later, the light came on.
A sinister smile crept across Qian Lu’s face as she dialed a number. “Zhang Kai, you can come up now. Your fiancée is back.”
Inside the house, Meng Xien had just washed her hands and was about to cut some fruit. Min Jiru offered, “Let me do it.”
“I’ll handle it,” Meng Xien replied. “Look at you, you’re exhausted. If you collapse from exhaustion, how will we proceed with our planned activities later?”
Min Jiru flushed and playfully punched Meng Xien while nestling against her. Meng Xien hugged her and kissed her lips. “Go rest on the sofa for a bit.”
Soon, Meng Xien carried the fruit out, but Min Jiru was still on the phone, growing increasingly perplexed. “Why hasn’t Lulu answered my calls? I hope nothing happened to her.”
“If you’re worried,” Meng Xien suggested, “we can check the garage for her.”
Meng Xien glanced at Min Jiru, then couldn’t resist adding, “Minmin, I don’t mean to criticize your friend, but I think Qian Lu is untrustworthy. Even if you’re friends, it’s wise to be cautious. You shouldn’t tell her everything.”
Min Jiru paused. “Qian Lu and I have no conflicts of interest. She even helped me when I was studying abroad. I don’t think she’d ever harm me.”
The “help” Min Jiru mentioned referred to when she first arrived abroad, unfamiliar with her surroundings. Qian Lu was her first roommate, having arrived a few days earlier. Qian Lu helped her get acquainted with the campus and the area. At that time, her mother was relentlessly pressuring her to break up with Meng Xien, leaving her emotionally vulnerable and deeply grateful for even the slightest assistance from those around her. Over the years of university, she and Qian Lu hadn’t become particularly close, but their relationship remained cordial.
“We should check the garage,” Min Jiru said. “I’m worried something happened to her.”
Meng Xien nodded. As they stood up, about to put on their coats and leave, someone suddenly knocked on the door.
Min Jiru moved to open it, but Meng Xien stopped her. Peering through the peephole, he saw a man standing outside, his face twisted with arrogant fury. “Min Jiru, open the door!”
The moment Min Jiru heard his voice, her face turned deathly pale, and she froze.
“Min Jiru, open the door! I know you’re in there! You’re having a secret affair with your lover, aren’t you? Open the door, you bitch!”
The man roared, pounding on the door with his fists and kicking it repeatedly. “Open the door! Min Jiru, open this door right now!”
The door swung open.
Meng Xien stood in the doorway, her expression cold. “Who are you? This is a private residence. I advise you to leave now, or I’ll call the police!”
“The police? You think I’m afraid of the police? Bring them here! Let’s see who’s in the right!”
The man tried to force his way inside, but Meng Xien blocked his path.
“You think you can lay a hand on me? You’re not the one I’m afraid of!” The man shoved her roughly, expecting to knock her to the ground. To his surprise, he couldn’t budge the tall, slender woman.
“You’re an Alpha?”
Meng Xien glared at him. “You figure that out now? If you try to fight, you won’t like the outcome!”
“You’re her lover, aren’t you? I can’t take you today, but you better watch out!”
Meng Xien frowned. The word “lover” sounded unpleasant. Though she’d never heard it before, she knew it couldn’t be anything good.
“Watch your mouth! I’m her girlfriend. Who are you, and what do you want with my girlfriend?”
Meng Xien eyed him warily, her gaze fixed on him as if she expected him to suddenly pull out a knife. But the man looked slick and overly flashy, probably just a second-generation heir with a bit of money, not some desperate criminal.
“Are you her girlfriend?” The man whirled around, glaring at the petrified Min Jiru, his voice turning into a furious roar. “You shameless slut! Cheating before you’re even married! Go tell your lover who I am! Tell her who I am! Am I not your fiancé?”
Fiancé?!
The word struck Meng Xien like lightning, exploding in her mind.
As the man lunged forward, Meng Xien slammed the door shut with a thud and turned to face Min Jiru.
Min Jiru’s lips trembled, her face drained of all color. When she met Meng Xien’s gaze, she hastily lowered her head in panic.
Meng Xien’s heart skipped a beat and her blood was running cold.
“Min Jiru! Say something! What, too ashamed to speak?” The man lunged forward again, his hand raised in a furious slap.
But the slap never landed. Meng Xien seized his raised hand in a vice grip. “Touch a hair on her head, and I’ll make you paralyzed in bed for life. Do you dare test me?”
The man froze, his hair standing on end under her icy gaze. A moment later, his pride stung, and he flew into a rage, throwing a punch at Meng Xien.
They clashed, and in seconds, Meng Xien had the man pinned against the wall, his arm twisted behind his back. “You dare threaten me?” the man roared. “Do you know who I am? I’m the son of the Fushui Group chairman! You shameless whore! Just like Min Jiru!”
Meng Xien delivered a vicious kick to the back of his knee. The man yelped and crumpled to the ground.
“Min Jiru is my girlfriend. Keep spreading these lies about her, and I’ll make you pay, no matter who your father is at the Fushui Group!”
“Fuck you! How am I spreading lies? I’m her fiancé! Min Jiru, are you mute? Scared now that I’ve exposed you? Didn’t we get engaged last year? Don’t forget how your mother begged mine for favors!”
Min Jiru finally stirred, stepping forward. “Let him go… Yes, we… we are engaged.” Her voice dwindled to a whisper.
Meng Xien’s mind buzzed as she stared blankly at Min Jiru. “He… he’s really your fiancé?”
Min Jiru’s face was ashen, her head bowed. “Yes.”
