- Chapter 34 - Transformation into a Fish (Part 1)
“Mm…”
Song Yunran heard a faint, weak moan, like that of a tiny kitten. Simultaneously, a burning breath swept across her neck, stirring a wave of tremors that had yet to subside when she felt a delicate bite. This caused her originally lost in cold contemplation following a new discovery to pause for a moment. In the next second, her fingers tightened; the gentle touch on the leg of the person in her arms turned into a firm grip.
The other person seemed to be pained by the grip and struggled slightly.
Song Yunran immediately let go.
An exotic fragrance floating in the room felt like honey overflowing from a hive thick and cloying. Song Yunran took an unexpected breath of it, and her heart began to race uncontrollably.
However, she did not lose her composure. Her long eyelashes lowered, her gaze falling upon the crown of the head of the person in her arms.
She watched for a long time.
Snap—
She switched on the room lights.
Light instantly flooded the room.
At the same time, the person entwined against her, rubbing and occasionally baring their teeth, seemed to dislike the light. Their body stiffened, and they buried their head deep into Song Yunran’s neck, keeping their face completely hidden.
Originally moving incessantly, she now seemed “sealed” by the light, turning as rigid as a piece of wood.
“Luoluo,” Song Yunran called out over her head, her usually cold voice turning low and husky. “Lift your head.”
Hearing her voice, the head buried deep in her neck moved once, then again, finally lifting slowly.
Twin eyes like black pearls met the light-filled room, looking like two glowing stars lit in the middle of the night; it was the reflection of the lamps in those beautiful eyes. At the corners of the eyes flowed a delicate blue, like sapphire sequins meticulously applied by a makeup artist creating an “elf look” for a model. They shimmered in harmony with the fine, same-colored scales on her cheeks, beautiful like a creature from a dream.
Song Yunran’s breath hitched for an instant.
When the scales she had once theorized about were finally confirmed by her own eyes, appearing truly before her, the impact was far stronger than she had anticipated.
Her hand twitched slightly as she slowly raised it, letting it fall gently upon those scales where light and shadow flowed.
She delicately touched this cold, non-human texture. In that instant, her mind wandered, and suddenly the scenery in her eyes underwent an indescribable change! Her cognition rapidly collapsed. The cute, slightly rounded face in her vision shifted silently and swiftly; the rounded curves receded, the face shape became more petite, and the features altered. In just a flash, the “human” in her eyes had changed faces!
The face that originally belonged to “Xu Luo” was gone. In its place was a breathtakingly beautiful face so perfect in its features that it possessed a distinct “non-human” quality.
“The wife’s cheeks suddenly sprouted some scales, and those scales spread rapidly from the cheeks to the neck to the arms…”
“The Master’s vision suddenly changed; the wife before his eyes suddenly took on a different appearance. His wife was originally ordinary-looking, but now, what appeared in his eyes was a face of incomparable beauty.”
The legends Song Yunran had once categorized as third-rate stories were now manifesting in reality, right before her eyes, under her very gaze, in a way that felt like a direct carbon copy. Song Yunran froze for two seconds, having reached a certain guess regarding the species of the person in her arms.
A mermaid.
A mermaid from legend… had come to her side.
“Luoluo—”
Song Yunran’s breathing slowed. She traced Xu Luo’s face with her fingertips.
“So, this is what you really look like.”
Xu Luo’s identity as a mermaid surprised Song Yunran, but in truth, the sudden revelation of her real face moved her even more.
She touched this new face with a sense of novelty, feeling the silky texture beneath her fingers. After a long while, she let out a low chuckle, her eyes as gentle as water.
“Our first ‘meeting,’ my Luoluo. Is there anything you want to say to me?”
The mermaid Xu Luo’s eyes were dazed. Although she was looking at Song Yunran, her gaze was as ignorant and bewildered as a newborn cub; she had clearly lost consciousness in the midst of this high fever.
Song Yunran: “…”
“Alright.” A smile touched the corners of Song Yunran’s mouth. She pressed the switch by the head of the bed, letting darkness fill the room once more. Then, she pulled the person into her arms, announcing with tolerance, “Luoluo seems quite out of it. Then just sleep. When you wake up after you wake up we will get to know each other properly.”
The exotic fragrance drifted. In the dark environment, it seemed even more capable of triggering physical impulses. But Song Yunran’s face remained calm; aside from tightening her hold on the person in her arms, she made no other move, appearing as if she had fallen asleep.
The morning sunlight spilled past the window, obstructed by the curtains, leaving only a transparent layer of light in the room.
Song Yunran opened her eyes. Having not slept all night, her eyelids felt heavy. She looked down slightly to check on a certain mermaid miss who had been tossing and turning in her arms for most of the night and had only quieted down around three or four in the morning. The latter was so quiet now that she was likely sleep—not sleeping. The other was staring at her with wide, round eyes, not blinking once.
Song Yunran hadn’t expected this scene and fell silent for a moment.
The exotic fragrance in the room had mostly dissipated, with only a faint lingering scent dissolved in the air, barely there.
Under the gaze of those wide eyes, her lips moved, and she said: “Good morning.”
Her voice was hoarse.
There was no response, only a motionless stare.
Song Yunran keenly noticed something wrong.
At this moment, the mermaid lady’s face was still perfect, but the deep blue fish scales had faded. Those eyes, which were a size larger than a normal person’s, were filled with a watery shimmer, making one clearly sense a kind of… unworldly transparency and purity.
Song Yunran, who was skilled at observing humans, had often seen this kind of gaze… in children under the age of five.
After staring into those eyes for a subtle moment, Song Yunran spoke: “Luoluo?”
Luoluo tilted her head and blinked.
Song Yunran fell silent, reaching out to check her forehead temperature.
The fever had broken.
But… it seemed she had been “fried” by the fever.
When Song Yunran led the “Child” Luoluo downstairs, they encountered Auntie Fu in the hallway. The old woman, who had been seriously ill and had not yet fully recovered, had grown thinner, but the calm, distant aura about her like aged tea had not diminished in the slightest. Seeing Song Yunran, she moved behind her as usual to push the wheelchair. Song Yunran stopped her and asked her to open the elevator door instead.
The old woman stepped forward to press the button, but in the next second, a figure darted past her like a gust of wind, rushing forward to smack the button on the side of the elevator door.
The door opened.
The person who opened the door still had their hand pressed on the button, wearing a face full of pride.
exactly like the expression of a three-year-old child after helping an adult carry a bowl once.
Our mermaid lady had successfully opened an elevator, and she was currently very proud of it.
The old woman looked over, clearly surprised.
But her surprise was clearly on a normal, “strange” level far from the level of having her worldview overturned. It was obvious that Auntie Fu was surprised by Xu Luo’s behavior, not… her face.
Auntie Fu did not seem to notice that Xu Luo had changed faces overnight.
Did one have to witness Xu Luo’s transformation with their own eyes to break the cognitive interference and see her true appearance?
Song Yunran, who had been observing Auntie Fu’s reaction, contemplated this.
The three entered the elevator.
Auntie Fu turned her head several times to look at Xu Luo, her mouth opening as if to ask what was wrong with her. Xu Luo herself did not feel the excessive concern focused on her; she was currently leaning against the mirrored wall of the elevator, happily interacting with herself in the mirror.
Seeing such abnormal behavior, Auntie Fu finally couldn’t suppress the concern in her heart and opened her mouth to ask. However, just as she made a sound, a phrase came from the wheelchair beside her: “Don’t ask.”
Auntie Fu’s question got stuck in her throat.
Song Yunran looked at Auntie Fu, and the two stared at each other for a while.
Auntie Fu didn’t ask again.
The elevator reached the first floor and the doors opened. Song Yunran and Auntie Fu exited one after the other, but Xu Luo did not. She was practically glued to the mirror, showing quite the reluctance to leave.
“Luoluo,” Song Yunran called.
Hearing the call, the “child” looked at the mirror, then at Song Yunran, and ultimately chose Song Yunran, following her out.
Breakfast was ordinary: eggs, vegetable pancakes, beef buns, and fresh shrimp congee. “Child” Luoluo didn’t eat seriously and had to be fed by Song Yunran herself, one bite at a time.
Auntie Fu watched the two of them; there was still doubt in her eyes, but she did not ask further.
Song Yunran could not bear to let the regressed Xu Luo be away from her side, so she took a leave of absence to work from home.
There was a meeting in the morning. She instructed the Auntie to keep an eye on Xu Luo for a while, then closed the study door and connected to the remote meeting.
Halfway through the meeting, a soft sound came from the door, and a figure was acting suspiciously at the entrance. Song Yunran caught a glimpse of the door out of the corner of her eye, but since the meeting was in progress, she didn’t say or do anything. This, however, gave the person at the door a “wrong signal,” making them think their behavior was permitted. Thus, they walked in boldly, heading straight for Song Yunran in the middle of her meeting, sat right on Song Yunran’s lap, buried their head into Song Yunran’s neck, and even bumped Song Yunran’s head to the side.
The meeting suddenly came to a halt. On the other end of the remote call, a certain department head reporting his work sat as stiff as a wooden chicken.
Song Yunran: “…”
She straightened her head which had been bumped aside, rubbed her chin which had taken quite a hit, and a flash of helplessness crossed her eyes.
The person sitting on her lap was unable to realize what kind of shock they had caused the other people in the meeting; they simply busied themselves with rubbing against Song Yunran.
The mermaid lady’s intelligence had regressed, but her need for physical contact had greatly increased a point Song Yunran had discovered in the past few hours.
The meeting remained at a standstill. The speaking department head had his mouth wide open and forgot to close it for a long time, but Song Yunran had already adjusted her mindset.
She didn’t tear away the person clinging to her; instead, she allowed the behavior and even patted the other’s back soothingly, one stroke after another.
She raised her eyes to look at the department head on the other side of the meeting and calmly announced:
“Continue.”
During this meeting, for the first time, Song Yunran saw the eloquent department head stutter three times. Fortunately, before the fourth stutter could arrive, the meeting finally ended.
As she shut down the remote equipment, a drowsy Xu Luo let out a yawn and rubbed her eyes as she slowly woke up.
Song Yunran couldn’t focus on her immediately, as she was operating the computer to receive an important document sent by her secretary. This caused dissatisfaction in the “fish,” who grabbed her face and turned it toward herself.
Watch me.
Look at me, do not look away from me.
The mermaid silently and forcefully demanded this.
Song Yunran understood this request. The corners of her mouth curled up, and she cooperatively looked at her.
Xu Luo was satisfied. She took the opportunity to hug Song Yunran’s neck, leaning in to press their faces together, her two feet swinging happily.
