- Chapter 30 - Performance
“So Granny Fu’s friend never went home back then…”
After hearing the story of Granny Fu’s friend from the Yitian employees, Xu Luo’s desire to confide in someone surged. She went to the third floor and, in one breath, recounted everything she had just heard to Song Yunran. Afterward, she voiced the same question as the old lady: “If she didn’t go home, where did that Granny You go later?”
A faint worry lingered in her heart. She couldn’t help but wonder if Granny Fu’s old friend had encountered some kind of unforeseen accident on her way back to the orphanage after visiting her parents, causing her to vanish from this world forever.
Pushing the various ominous guesses churning in her mind aside, Xu Luo asked Song Yunran, “Where do you think Granny’s friend went?”
Song Yunran was currently checking perfumes. She had recently taken an interest in fragrances, so she had a batch of them collected and sent to the villa. Although these perfumes were all different, the scents all trended toward a sea-breeze aroma.
She was trying to find a perfume that was close to the body scent Xu Luo emitted when she was in heat.
This action didn’t have much practical significance; she just felt like doing it.
Sniffing the mouth of the perfume bottle in her hand, Song Yunran appeared somewhat casual. She replied, “She probably went somewhere she wanted to go.”
Xu Luo caught a whiff of the drifting fragrance and subconsciously sniffed. She replied with a nasal tone, “Where did she want to go?”
Song Yunran said, “Only she herself would know that.”
Xu Luo: “…”
That’s the same as saying nothing at all!
In truth, Xu Luo didn’t expect Song Yunran to give her an answer; under normal circumstances, it was impossible for Song Yunran to have one. She just wanted to find someone to talk to, to vent the stifling frustration accumulated in her heart.
Taking a long sigh, her attention shifted to the perfume bottle in Song Yunran’s hand. She asked curiously, “Why did you suddenly get interested in perfume?”
Song Yunran switched to another bottle, unscrewed the cap, sprayed a little on her wrist, and held it out to Xu Luo: “Smell it.”
Xu Luo leaned in, smelled it as requested, and gave an evaluation: “Fragrant.”
As for how it was fragrant, she was a layman and didn’t know how to describe it.
“Does it feel familiar?” Song Yunran asked. As she posed the question, her gaze focused on Xu Luo’s face, not letting any slight change in expression escape her.
Xu Luo had no change in expression. She sniffed again and responded, “Not familiar.”
She shrugged. “I don’t even like using perfume, and I don’t know much about it. How could I find it familiar?”
Song Yunran: “…”
Not familiar?
Was it because this scent was far removed from the strange fragrance Xu Luo emitted during her heat? Or was it that Xu Luo herself hadn’t noticed the peculiar scent her body produced?
Song Yunran pondered.
“Achoo!”
The fragrance in the room was too strong, and Xu Luo suddenly sneezed.
Song Yunran’s train of thought was interrupted by the sneeze. She looked at Xu Luo, put down the perfume, and went to open all the windows in the room.
The next day, Xu Luo inexplicably couldn’t sleep. She uncharacteristically got out of bed early and lay sprawled on the living room sofa like a salted fish. It was still early so early that Auntie Li hadn’t arrived to make breakfast yet, Granny Fu hadn’t woken up, and Song Yunran hadn’t come downstairs. The house was quiet.
Xu Luo stared with wide eyes at the dim light in the living room, zoning out listlessly.
The sky gradually brightened. Auntie Li arrived and went into the kitchen. Granny Fu got up and went to the third floor, and before long, she and Song Yunran came to the living room together.
Xu Luo stared blankly as they moved back and forth in front of her.
“What is Lulu doing?”
Having tidied herself up and preparing to go to work, Song Yunran noticed her and showed a little bit of concern before leaving.
Xu Luo was like an empty shell well, a sentimental empty shell: “Suddenly… I feel like I’m living a bit of a boring life.”
Song Yunran laughed: “Then does Lulu want to come to the company with me?”
Xu Luo bounced into a sitting position. Her lifeless eyes suddenly gathered light, becoming bright and shiny.
“Have you finally seen my deeply hidden talents and want to recruit me?!” Xu Luo asked excitedly.
Song Yunran: “…Mm.”
Xu Luo felt that the pause before that “Mm” was a bit subtle, but it didn’t matter. She didn’t care. She asked enthusiastically, “How much salary are you going to pay me?”
Song Yunran hadn’t considered this matter yet. Being asked now, she thought for a moment and replied, “Depends on your performance?”
Xu Luo asked like a workplace veteran, “What kind of performance?”
Song Yunran laughed out loud: “What kind of performance does Lulu think it is?”
Xu Luo lay back down on the sofa, one leg hooked up provocatively to show off her curves, her eyes winking wildly at Song Yunran.
Song Yunran: “…”
She let Granny Fu help her straighten her collar and said to Xu Luo, “Hourly rate: 10 yuan.”
Xu Luo: “…”
She silently pulled up the pant leg of her loungewear by two inches.
Song Yunran took a glance and changed her tune: “8 yuan.”
Xu Luo sat up and went to find her phone. She was going to report this black-hearted boss the wages being offered were far below the city’s minimum wage standard!
In the end, Xu Luo didn’t make the report call. She thought about it and still couldn’t bear to let go of this opportunity to make money. She wanted to earn that 8-yuan hourly wage first and then report her. So, she packed up and followed Song Yunran out the door.
