- Chapter 21 - Sovereignty
When Meng Ze returned from his meeting, he didn’t see anyone in the office.
The snacks and fruit on the table had been touched, and the tablet was still sitting nearby, but there was no sign of Zhao Zhiyi.
Secretary Chen, who was in an excellent mood after just receiving a raise, was following behind Meng Ze to give a report. She suddenly saw her boss’s expression shift from an indifferent coldness to a furious ice, making her shudder in fear.
“When did he leave?” Meng Ze asked in a cold voice.
“I didn’t hear anything about Mr. Zhao leaving…” Secretary Chen quickly contacted others, but everyone said they hadn’t seen Zhao Zhiyi depart. She said hesitantly, “Maybe… maybe Mr. Zhao just got bored and went out for a stroll?”
Meng Ze didn’t speak. He walked into the office, his entire body radiating a torrential aura of resentment.
Secretary Chen was incredibly grateful she was an Omega. Had she been an Alpha, she surely would have been forced to her knees by the high-level pheromone pressure by now. But even as an Omega, her legs felt weak in Meng Ze’s violent pheromones. Straining to keep her composure, she said, “President Meng, should I go look for him?”
Meng Ze was about to nod when he suddenly paused. “Wait.”
He stood up and walked to the door of the side compartment.
Sometimes when work was too busy, Meng Ze would sleep directly in the office, so a room had been specially partitioned off as a lounge. At this moment, the lounge door was ajar, and the light inside was still on.
Meng Ze pushed the door open to see a lump huddled on his bed, someone was sleeping soundly.
“No need to look,” Meng Ze ordered. “Get out.”
Secretary Chen felt as if she had been granted a divine reprieve and galloped out immediately.
Zhao Zhiyi had a quirk when sleeping: in places where he lacked a sense of security, he would wrap himself tightly in the quilt. He wouldn’t even poke his head out for air even if his face turned flushed red, he was likely the kind of fool who believed that if you encountered a ghost, you wouldn’t be caught if you hid under the covers.
Meng Ze dug the person out and released his pheromones. Zhao Zhiyi’s furrowed brows slowly smoothed out. Meng Ze reached out and lightly touched his long, thick eyelashes. Zhao Zhiyi’s lashes fluttered, and he suddenly grabbed Meng Ze’s hand, nuzzling against the dry palm with attachment, like a frail and harmless kitten.
Meng Ze leaned down to lightly kiss the tip of his nose. He really wanted to just hold him quietly and do nothing, but there was a pile of documents waiting to be signed outside.
He buried his head in the crook of Zhao Zhiyi’s neck and took a deep breath.
Zhao Zhiyi was wearing a scent-suppressing patch, he couldn’t smell the pheromones, only the scent of body wash warmed by body temperature. But even so, he still felt an immense sense of comfort.
It wasn’t until Zhao Zhiyi felt the pressure was uncomfortable and pushed him that Meng Ze got up to go deal with work.
He suddenly remembered a time drinking with Zheng Xinyun. Back then, Zheng had just found a partner and was in a phase where he was obsessed with spreading “happiness,” determined to help all his single brothers find a good match. He had raved about the benefits of Omegas, and Meng Ze remembered one part specifically:
“…Forget everything else, just take that damn rut. Every time I hit my rut, I only had one thought: ‘To hell with it, I don’t want to be an Alpha anymore.’ It wasn’t until I had my baby that I realized the difference between having an Omega by your side during a rut versus not having one is the difference between heaven and hell.”
At the time, Meng Ze had scoffed, thinking Zheng Xinyun had lost his mind to love. But now…
Meng Ze turned his gaze to the lounge door that wasn’t fully closed.
It turned out Zheng Xinyun hadn’t been exaggerating. Just knowing that Zhao Zhiyi was lying in his “nest” gave him an unprecedented sense of peace.
Secretary Chen sat at her workstation sorting through documents. Taking advantage of the big boss’s absence, a group of people gathered around to gossip. First, they congratulated Sister Chen on her raise, then they inquired if the Boss’s “Wife” had any other needs, they were more than willing to run errands. Yes, they already knew who the Omega the boss brought today was.
Getting a 50% raise just for delivering a lip balm, who wouldn’t be envious?
“Forget it, Mr. Zhao is sleeping right now,” Secretary Chen said. “I reckon he was exhausted from last night. When I went in to deliver things, I saw his neck and shoulders… tsk tsk, covered in hickeys and bite marks, even on his wrists.”
The crowd gasped and felt a bit of sympathy. “True, President Meng looks like the type with a high… ahem, being the Boss’s Wife isn’t easy.”
“But I heard before that the Boss’s Wife was a pretty superficial person,” someone whispered. “Just a poor student. If it weren’t for the high compatibility, he never would have married into a wealthy family. I thought in this kind of interest-based marriage, President Meng definitely wouldn’t like the other party.”
“Maybe he really doesn’t like him, he’s just driven by pheromones,” another person said sourly. “After all, with such high compatibility, the influence of pheromones can completely override reason. Plus, President Meng is in his rut right now. If a high-compatibility Omega releases just a bit of pheromones, President Meng would feel a lot better. It’s understandable to bring him to work.”
Secretary Chen glanced at this assistant and said, “How could we know the boss’s business? But from what I see, the way President Meng treats the Mrs. doesn’t seem to be just because of pheromones.”
With a “thud,” she placed a thick stack of documents into the assistant’s arms and smiled. “However, even if it is because of pheromones, so what? Pheromones are an inseparable part of AO dynamics, and high compatibility is something you can only hope for but not seek. Generally, AO pairs with 50% compatibility will have mutual feelings at 85%, even if they were mortal enemies, they’d likely end up together. It’s not something you can just be envious of, right?”
“…Y-yes, that’s true.” The assistant forced a smile.
“Mhm, go get busy,” Secretary Chen said. “President Meng is waiting for these documents.”
Once the person left, she sighed and looked at a colleague nearby. “Is that one new?”
“Sister Lin is on maternity leave, so she’s a temporary sub.”
Secretary Chen: “Another little girl dreaming of becoming a phoenix… If President Meng’s bed were that easy to climb into, this position wouldn’t have fallen to the current one. Once she’s been crushed under President Meng for two months, she’ll realize this kind of man is a blessing we can’t handle.”
While the group was joking around, someone suddenly pushed the door open. Secretary Chen immediately said, “Hello, may I ask who…”
The visitor flashed a bright smile, took off his sunglasses, and said, “Sister Chen doesn’t remember me? I’m Zhou Xia.”
The newcomer was dressed sophisticatedly and had a handsome appearance, looking very much like the kind of idol that young girls like nowadays. One might mistake him for an idol if they didn’t know better, but Secretary Chen knew he was the young master of the Zhou family.
The Zhou family had been quite powerful years ago, holding a place in A-City. Ever since this Young Master Zhou’s father took over, the business had plummeted. However, a lean camel is still bigger than a horse, outsiders still had to politely call him “Young Master Zhou.”
“Why are you here?” Secretary Chen put on a smile.
“To talk business with President Meng, of course,” Zhou Xia said. “I heard President Meng came to the office today?”
Secretary Chen thought his information was certainly fast. President Meng had only been at the office for two hours and this guy was already here, he must be watching twenty-four hours a day. But she remained polite: “Yes, but President Meng is currently…”
“As long as he’s here.” Zhou Xia pushed past Secretary Chen. “I’ll go find him myself.”
“Hey, Young Master Zhou, you…”
Secretary Chen tried to stop him, but Zhou Xia had already quickly reached the office door. He knocked and, without waiting for a reply, pushed the door open directly. “Brother Meng?”
Seeing him enter, Secretary Chen could only stop at the door, her expression looking quite displeased.
Someone whispered, “Sister Chen, what’s wrong?”
“…This person has ulterior motives.” Secretary Chen’s brows furrowed. “You’ve heard about his family situation? They can’t make it on their own, so they have to look for outside help. President Meng is the ‘Golden Turtle’ son-in-law they’ve set their sights on. If it hadn’t been for an accident, maybe the current Boss’s Wife would be this Young Master Zhou.”
Everyone immediately became interested. “Sister Chen, tell us, what accident?”
Secretary Chen said in a low voice, “As you know, the Chairman has always wanted a grandson. The higher the AO compatibility, the more excellent the offspring. For example, President Meng’s parents had a compatibility as high as 80%. Yet President Meng reached his age and still refused to marry, so the Chairman had to choose someone himself. Before Mr. Zhao appeared, this Young Master Zhou had the highest compatibility with President Meng, heard it reached 80%…”
“So you’re saying… just because of a 5% difference, Young Master Zhou lost?”
“Don’t underestimate that 5%. Once compatibility hits 60%, every 1% higher is difficult. 80% and 85% are like being separated by a vast chasm.”
“So, Young Master Zhou still hasn’t given up?”
“He definitely won’t give up. Isn’t he here because he caught the scent?”
Inside the office.
Meng Ze looked up and gave Zhou Xia a cold glance. “Who let you in?”
Zhou Xia felt a bit apprehensive in his heart.
They said Meng Ze had reached his rut, but looking at him now, he was still as incredibly cold and unapproachable as ever. You couldn’t tell he was losing control at all. Was the information wrong?
“Brother Meng, it’s really too hard to see you.” Zhou Xia walked to the front of the desk and said, “I have a deal I want to discuss with you.”
Meng Ze put down his fountain pen and looked at him expressionlessly. “If you have a deal to discuss, follow the normal procedures instead of barging directly into my office.”
“Oh, Brother Meng, we’ve known each other for so many years. Why be so heartless?” Zhou Xia said with a beaming smile. “I heard from Jiang Kui that you’ve hit your rut recently? Why are you still coming to work during your rut? That’s too much hard work.”
Meng Ze: “You came just to say this nonsense?”
He said coldly, “Get out.”
Zhou Xia frowned. “Why are you being so mean! I’m worried about you! Every time you have a rut, you lock yourself up and end up covered in injuries. It makes one’s heart ache to see it.”
Meng Ze’s patience was exhausted, and he was about to call security to kick him out when Zhou Xia suddenly ripped off the scent-suppressing patch from the back of his neck. Instantly, a heavy, cloying scent of honey diffused everywhere. Sweat broke out on his forehead, and he said, panting, “Brother Meng, your rut must be very difficult, right? Our compatibility is as high as 80%. Don’t you feel a lot better?”
“…You’re in heat?” Meng Ze paused.
“That’s right.” Zhou Xia asked with a smile, “Does my scent smell good? It’s very sweet, isn’t it? Brother Meng, won’t you hold me? I know you’re suffering too… No need to force yourself to endure.”
80% compatibility was very rare, not to mention an Alpha in a rut and an Omega in heat, with the Omega proactively removing his scent-patch. What would happen with the two of them in a room together, even a fool could guess.
Normally, an Alpha would be influenced by an Omega in heat. If it were any other time, Zhou Xia wasn’t sure he could seduce Meng Ze, as this man’s willpower was truly astonishing. But now…
Zhou Xia was banking on the fact that an Alpha in a rut could not refuse an Omega with 80% compatibility, that was why he took this desperate gamble.
Even if Meng Ze were to be furious afterward, so what? If Meng Ze had already marked him and if he could coax Meng Ze into a permanent mark and get pregnant, then he would never have to worry about his family’s company closing down again.
Thinking of this, Zhou Xia steeled himself and pulled his collar open, revealing a large area of fair skin, and leaned bonelessly toward Meng Ze. “Brother Meng, I feel so bad…”
