Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 83
The vendor was infuriated by their coordinated responses but could do nothing, especially with the Omega woman’s pitiful gaze drawing sympathetic voices from the crowd:
“Never seen such aggressive haggling, this ruins our Qian Shui Island’s reputation!”
“Look at that hulking guy pretending to be helpless. What could two young women possibly do to him?”
“That guy’s always been a bully. Last time I asked him to engrave characters, he made a mistake but insisted I hadn’t specified clearly and demanded payment. Those two characters weren’t even remotely related!”
Under the crowd’s accusations, the vendor tried to slink away, but Pei Yujiang, incensed by his earlier hostility, wouldn’t let him. She stepped forward, blocking his path with her long legs.
The vendor glared daggers at her, but Pei Yujiang met his gaze fearlessly, unbothered by their 10cm height difference. With so many witnesses around, he couldn’t risk throwing a punch.
Minutes later, local enforcement arrived. Though there was no concrete evidence of price gouging, testimonies from bystanders led to his removal. Before being taken away, he shot Pei Yujiang and Yu Zhiwan a venomous look. Unfazed, Pei Yujiang flipped him off.
After leaving the crowd, the two lingered outdoors, savoring their rare, carefree time together.
Pei Yujiang carried a bag of golden pomelos while Yu Zhiwan cradled a pomelo lantern. They strolled leisurely along the gravel path, bathed in white streetlight that cast a frost-like glow, blurring the line between moonlight and artificial beams.
Spotting a discarded numeral carving on the ground, Pei Yujiang suddenly turned to Yu Zhiwan. “That photo you took of his vendor license earlier, maybe delete it? Feels like bad luck.”
“Vendor license?” Yu Zhiwan stifled a laugh. “I didn’t take one. My screen was black the whole time.”
Pei Yujiang paused before bursting into laughter. Her girlfriend truly was a treasure.
“Zhiwan,” Pei Yujiang intertwined their fingers, tracing the Omega’s knuckles before enveloping her slender hand completely. Despite both being women, their hand sizes weren’t drastically different, Yu Zhiwan’s fingers were elegantly long, requiring Pei Yujiang to stretch slightly to cover them. “Tell me about your past.”
She often shared her own history with Yu Zhiwan and grew curious about hers. Even if the memories weren’t all pleasant much like her own battlefield tales, love bred an inexplicable urge to share.
Since Yu Zhiwan couldn’t have been part of her past, Pei Yujiang wanted to bridge that gap through stories, as if conversing across time.
Yu Zhiwan hesitated. “There’s not much worth mentioning…”
But Pei Yujiang persisted, coaxing and pestering until Yu Zhiwan relented, recounting fragments of happier memories.
As a child, she’d briefly moved away with her parents her most carefree, joyful period. She’d explored much of Wing City, including Wing Lake Park before its redesign, witnessing its transformation firsthand.
“I used to keep two little parrots in a cage outside the yard. Unfortunately, one was eaten by a cat at night, and the other flew away, I never knew where it went. I cried for so long. Later, when my dad wanted to buy me new budgies, I refused outright.”
Recalling how serious she had been back then, Yu Zhiwan couldn’t help but smile:
“I was so stubborn back then. I believed the little parrot that died was watching me from the sky, and that it would get jealous if I got new ones. I used to cry for ages whenever a small animal died, but look at me now, how strange, isn’t it?”
Yu Zhiwan didn’t care what others thought of her whether they saw her as cold-blooded, heartless, or even a femme fatale. None of it mattered to her. Good or bad, that was just who she was. If not for the expectations placed on her by her parents, she wouldn’t even be thinking about fulfilling her so-called “mission.”
Pei Yujiang shook her head:
“People change as they grow up.”
As they spoke, they somehow wandered aimlessly to the sandy shore by the lake. The sand here was fine and soft, praised as “golden sand.” Pei Yujiang thought this island should be called “Golden Island”, everything seemed to shimmer in a warm, golden hue.
Though it was a freshwater lake, its depths were unfathomable. Jumping in would be fatal. Pei Yujiang was a strong swimmer, so she ventured a little further but didn’t go too deep. She just checked the surroundings with a flashlight, making sure there was nothing harmful before signaling for Yu Zhiwan to come over.
Yu Zhiwan’s recovery would take a long time, and during this period, she couldn’t run or jump vigorously. Pei Yujiang carefully supported her, letting her dip her feet into the water.
Every time she bathed now that she could feel the water temperature with her legs, Yu Zhiwan thoroughly enjoyed it. But this was her first time actually playing in the water, so she cautiously held onto Pei Yujiang’s arm for balance.
Standing on one leg, she tried to lift her foot to take off her sock, but Pei Yujiang suddenly scooped her up, making it easier.
Pei Yujiang had strong arms, Yu Zhiwan had experienced that before. Nestled in the woman’s embrace, her cheeks flushed slightly as she quickly peeled off her socks.
“Into the water we go!”
Before Yu Zhiwan could brace herself, she was suddenly tossed forward, making her shriek in surprise. It was rare for Pei Yujiang to play such a prank on her, but the next second, she caught her flawlessly in her arms again. The sand was soft, so there was no risk of injury. Pei Yujiang simply knelt down, letting Yu Zhiwan half-submerge in the cool water.
The Omega’s jade-white feet sank into the water, the sensation smooth and refreshing. They were close to the aquaculture area, where plenty of fish lingered near the shore, unafraid of people. With the lake’s water level rising, Yu Zhiwan suddenly felt a tickle on her ankle, a small fish had just darted past her foot.
A few years ago, fish spas had been all the rage basically, soaking one’s feet in water filled with tiny fish that nibbled away dead skin. Yu Zhiwan had seen videos of it and found the idea a bit hard to stomach.
But stumbling upon a fish while wading like this was actually quite fun. Yu Zhiwan playfully splashed water at it with her foot, startling the little fish into darting away, which made her laugh.
A few seconds later, some kind of waterweed tangled around Pei Yujiang’s foot. She shook it off after several attempts, only to hear Yu Zhiwan ask:
“So, when are you planning to bring them here for a barbecue?”
“How about tomorrow night? If there aren’t any school activities.”
“Are schools here always this interesting? Taking students to vacation resorts for outings.” She knew schools usually organized spring and autumn excursions, but never imagined they’d come to an island.
Yu Zhiwan shook her head: “Not usually. Normally it’s zoos, botanical gardens, or at best amusement parks or museums. This is my first time seeing an autumn outing to an island.”
And for several days at that. She didn’t think it was about pampering students, mainly about making money. Probably some collaboration between the school and resort. A four-day, three-night trip cost 5,000 yuan per person, with extra meals at personal expense. That’s nearly a month’s salary for an average worker unaffordable for ordinary families.
What she really wanted to say was that while the island looked beautiful, it actually had more safety risks than amusement parks or zoos.
They played by the shore a while longer until tired, then headed back. The night market was nearly packed up when they returned, with only a few stalls left desperately calling out to them.
Pei Yujiang bought a skewer of grilled pomelo, finding it unexpectedly sour and astringent. The dried rind wasn’t tasty, apparently not all fruits worked for grilling. Still, she finished it, never one to waste food.
The villa area was lit up with moving shadows. Some students had forgotten to draw curtains, visible inside singing with smuggled speakers, their wild dancing clear as day. Pei Yujiang chuckled. Carrying Yu Zhiwan up the final stairs, they reached their villa.
At the entrance, Pei Yujiang heard raised voices inside. Listening closely, she recognized Jiang Wenxiu’s one-sided tirade.
Jiang stood red-faced under bright lights, while Shen Jiayu sat calmly by the pool with an iPad. “Can you stop dodging questions? I’m not joking around!”
Shen replied mildly: “Then take me as joking. Is that alright?”
“Fine! Joke away! I’m leaving. If you like someone else, quit pretending to be ‘married to your studies’! What are you, a celebrity maintaining your image? My time’s precious too, no reason to waste it on you!”
Though furious, Jiang uncharacteristically refrained from swearing. From Pei Yujiang’s limited understanding of Jiang, such restraint meant either she wasn’t truly angry, or she liked this person too much to be harsh.
Pei Yujiang suspected the latter.
Sensing drama, she hesitated about interrupting until Yu Zhiwan poked her shoulder, signaling her to go first.
Pei Yujiang recalled that time when they were eating the melon about the wife of Xiangcheng’s mayor together at the KTV. Yu Zhiwan had followed behind her with the same mischievous yet curious expression. Whether it was watching high school students quarrel or observing Madam Chen’s transaction with that person, eavesdropping on the scene was always an immoral yet delightful activity.
Compared to that, avoiding the notice of two high school students would be much easier. Pei Yujiang quickly found the perfect spot. Worried that Yu Zhiwan might get tired from standing too long, she leaned against the wall, propped up one leg, and pulled the Omega onto her lap.
Wasn’t this the ultimate VIP seat for gossip?
