Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 76
Jiang Wenxiu quickly located the address and sent the detailed IP to Pei Yujiang.
The location of Minister Chen was in an ordinary-looking residential area not in the city center, but not too remote either, certainly not as isolated as that water plant.
To anyone passing by, the place would seem completely normal. It was a typical neighborhood with people coming and going, complete with all the necessities like shops and bathhouses.
Jiang Wenxiu hovered behind Pei Yujiang and Yu Zhiwan, craning her neck to ask:
“What are you looking for this place for? Did someone here owe you money and refuse to pay?”
Pei Yujiang didn’t hide everything from her:
“I have something important to do, but I can’t say more. Don’t ask too much.”
Jiang Wenxiu let out a sarcastic “Oh.”
She glanced at Yu Zhiwan’s composed expression, then back at Pei Yujiang, guessing it probably wasn’t an issue between them. Still, even though she wasn’t very familiar with Yu Zhiwan, she could tell the woman didn’t seem too happy right now.
With her objective achieved, Jiang Wenxiu quickly retreated to tackle the homework that gave her a headache. Fan Zhaozhao was out on a date with Pei Jinhuai, but she’d definitely check her assignments when she got back.
With one less person in the room, the atmosphere around Yu Zhiwan grew even colder. Her face was expressionless as she stared at the computer screen. Sensing the tension, Pei Yujiang lightly patted her shoulder but got no response.
Undeterred, Pei Yujiang called out shamelessly:
“Zhiwan?”
“Wanwan?”
Beneath the Omega’s calm exterior, turbulent undercurrents swirled. She seemed completely unaware of Pei Yujiang’s touch, her fingers tapping away at the keyboard as she searched for information about the neighborhood’s surroundings.
“This is an old residential area with poor security. The walls are damaged in places and haven’t been repaired in a long time. Many of the surveillance cameras are broken. To pick up packages, residents have to go around the complex to another set of lockers or collect them from the security office, where multiple thefts have been reported. Some residents have complained about it online.”
Yu Zhiwan’s tone was strictly professional as she lifted a slender finger and pointed:
“So, the weak security means they had time to move people in. There might even be a hideout or contact point within the neighborhood itself. We should prepare for the worst.”
“And if it were me, I wouldn’t place my main base too close to this area to avoid being wiped out in one strike. But it wouldn’t be too far either. My estimate is within this range.”
She drew a red circle on the screen, marking a radius of about five kilometers. Picking up Jiang Wenxiu’s fountain pen, she twirled it between her fingers before pushing her blue-light glasses up the bridge of her nose and stating firmly:
“Search within this approximate range. I can bring a few people. The main objective this time is to rescue Minister Chen, ignore everyone else. My team will handle support, and one person will go in with you.”
Yu Zhiwan fixed her with a piercing stare, her words both an instruction and a warning:
“Pei Yujiang, they’re not easy to deal with. Don’t play the hero.”
Pei Yujiang didn’t answer immediately.
If she couldn’t promise something, she wouldn’t brush it off with a careless “Okay.”
The dark room remained unlit, the white glow from the computer screen casting across the Omega’s face, illuminating one side while leaving the other in shadow. Her features stood out sharply, as if she’d stepped straight out of a fashion magazine.
The gold-rimmed glasses, no one knew when she’d bought them rested on Yu Zhiwan’s delicate nose, adding an air of restrained allure to her face. Pei Yujiang sat on a low stool she’d brought in from outside, putting her at a lower vantage point. The Omega looked down at her, silky black hair cascading around her shoulders, making her fair skin appear even paler. It was almost irresistible not to pinch the bridge of her nose.
It took Pei Yujiang a moment to snap out of her daze.
After hesitating, she stammered, “I’ll do my best.”
She wasn’t very good at hiding her emotions or perhaps, having grown accustomed to treating Yu Zhiwan as blind, she rarely bothered with controlling her expressions. As a result, Yu Zhiwan quickly saw through her words, realizing that Pei Yujiang’s thoughts didn’t match what she was saying.
And she didn’t even bother pretending convincingly in front of her.
The air hung silent for a beat before Pei Yujiang suddenly felt a sharp pinch on her cheek. Yu Zhiwan’s grip wasn’t gentle, her tone chiding yet helpless:
“Did you act like this during missions before?”
Pei Yujiang’s soft cheek was like dough in her hand, malleable under Yu Zhiwan’s “oppression.” Forced to look up, she mumbled:
“Like… what?”
“Like… this.”
Yu Zhiwan had initially wanted to say “meddling,” but on second thought, that didn’t quite fit.
But Pei Yujiang understood anyway.
“How is this meddling? Not only is Minister Chen one of our own, we have to rescue him but everyone else trapped there is suffering inhumane treatment. If we can dismantle their operation, that would be ideal. Even if we wanted to take a slow-and-steady approach now, they wouldn’t give us the chance.”
So they had to be swift and ruthless. Since they were already openly opposing Organization A, Pei Yujiang was certain they weren’t all-powerful, otherwise, why bother with covert human trafficking in underground facilities instead of just releasing a zombie virus?
Besides, rescuing even one of their captives meant she was already disrupting their plans, effectively taking a bite out of them. In that sense, saving one person or a hundred made no difference.
“And what about you? Have you considered the danger you might face?”
They say “the eyes are the windows to the soul,” and Pei Yujiang thought the saying suited Yu Zhiwan perfectly. As the woman spoke, her clear, piercing gaze held Pei Yujiang’s, leaving no room for evasion.
Pei Yujiang met her eyes seriously, thinking before answering:
“I have. And after hearing you, I’ve considered it even more carefully.”
In the past, she had been alone, free to come and go without worry. Even if she died, it would’ve been nothing more than a handful of dirt over her face. Maybe because she’d walked in darkness for so long, death had never been something she feared.
For her in the past, death was merely moving from one sunless world to another equally sunless one. But now, things were different.
The air in Wing City was still so fresh, the rippling waters of Wing Lake shimmered, and the streets bustled with pedestrians, no longer the desolate, lifeless scene she remembered. People walking by the lake no longer had to fear mutated aquatic monsters leaping out to snap their necks. The white tower hadn’t been half-destroyed in war, nor had it become a bloody prison holding human slaves.
Now, she had Yu Zhiwan and Pei Jinhuai by her side, two irreplaceable people who were deeply close to her. She also thought about how Yu Zhiwan would feel if something happened to her, and whether Pei Jinhuai could bear the loss of his daughter in middle age.
At this thought, Pei Yujiang hooked Yu Zhiwan’s pinky finger and gave it a gentle shake:
“You’re so calm, I can’t do that. Even if I told you right now that I’d ignore everyone else and just save Minister Chen, that would be a lie. But I don’t want to lie to you. I’ll be honest with you. If you can’t accept it, we can discuss it. And you have to do the same for me in the future, okay?”
Pei Yujiang knelt on the bench with one knee, maintaining eye level as she locked gazes with Yu Zhiwan. She slid her fingers between Yu Zhiwan’s, interlacing them tightly with the Omega’s, and quietly inhaled the faint scent of Yu Zhiwan’s pheromones, feeling her emotions grow even steadier.
“First, I can promise I’ll only act when safety is reasonably ensured. If others have low chances of rescue, I’ll just take Minister Chen and leave. And I’ll make sure those people don’t have guns when I move.”
Even though she’d learned evasive maneuvers against bullets, her body wasn’t made of iron. If there happened to be a sharpshooter lying in wait, or more than five armed individuals, that would exceed her limits, and she couldn’t guarantee her own survival.
Pei Yujiang could do the math on equivalent exchange, trading some injuries to get those people out was fine; at worst, it’d just mean a hospital stay. But risking her life for a few people when success wasn’t even certain? She wasn’t that reckless.
“Then, I’ll try to find the best approach, make a thorough plan, prepare an escape route in case of failure, and figure out a backup plan.”
First, that useless 711 system was definitely out, Pei Yujiang dismissed it immediately.
Gun ownership was illegal for civilians in Guobang only armed police or military personnel could carry firearms. Buying a gun on the black market wouldn’t be too hard, but if caught, the fallout would be too messy. Pei Yujiang wasn’t planning to go that route.
What she considered was whether she could carry a signal device to ensure she could livestream at critical moments. That way, even if Wing City authorities tried to suppress it, they couldn’t silence public outcry.
Yu Zhiwan didn’t comment on her plan, simply tossing out a “Figure it out yourself” before leaving the room.
A while later, Pei Yujiang saw Yu Zhiwan, who had just been discussing life-and-death matters with her, tutoring Jiang Wenxiu on homework.
Yu Zhiwan’s slender fingers pointed at the sea of red crosses on Jiang Wenxiu’s assignment:
“You started with the right approach, but the calculations later became too complex, which made it frustrating. Don’t rigidly apply formulas from this point onward actually, simplified calculations can be used here…”
Jiang Wenxiu, utterly defeated: “…”
Pei Yujiang: “…” Her girlfriend was truly impressive.
Though she had said that, two days later, Yu Zhiwan mysteriously slipped a gift into Pei Yujiang’s hands.
Pei Yujiang’s first thought was that it might be another marriage certificate, but the size of the metal box seemed off. Peeking inside, she caught a glimpse of black fabric, and her mind immediately jumped to some strange roleplay scenario.
Flustered, she grabbed Yu Zhiwan’s arm:
“Zhiwan, actually, I…”
With everything ready, there was no time to waste, Pei Yujiang was already preparing for action. She hadn’t been in the mood for such things lately, but she didn’t want to upset Yu Zhiwan by saying so.
If Zhiwan wanted to get intimate with her now, Pei Yujiang could understand. After all, sensitive Omegas would naturally worry about her sustaining serious injuries or encountering unexpected dangers.
Deeply moved, Pei Yujiang was just about to express her gratitude when her girlfriend gave her a light smack on the arm.
Yu Zhiwan looked at her with confusion:
“What weird thoughts are you having? Hurry up and open it.”
Pei Yujiang then realized the gift wasn’t what she had imagined. Opening the metal box, she froze in shock as the bulletproof vest inside was fully revealed. She then unfolded it further.
She had handled bulletproof vests before, but even packed in a metal box, this one didn’t feel right in terms of weight.
Nestled inside the vest was a sleek, pitch-black handgun and two fully loaded magazines.
For a moment, Pei Yujiang was too stunned to speak.
She had suspected her girlfriend might be a hidden powerhouse, but she never imagined Yu Zhiwan had the connections to procure something like this and so casually at that.
“Your aim should be decent, right? After all, you came from the military. This is the latest model of silenced pistol on the market not sure if you’re used to it. While its stopping power isn’t the highest, its noise suppression is currently the best available. Generally, unless someone’s too close, it’s nearly undetectable, even through walls.”
“Other equipment might cause too much commotion and be harder to conceal. I have someone on my side who’s skilled with firearms, he’ll support you and keep an eye on you. You’ll go in together, and no reckless heroics.”
“I’ve already mapped out the plan. On the day, I’ll have Zhao Manlin video-call Minister Chen. That should get her relocated to this spot likely one of their hideouts. You’ll enter through this door to avoid surveillance. For extraction, follow the blue route I’ve marked.”
“There’s an abandoned coal factory about three kilometers away, but I suspect they’ve set up a small compound there. Be extra careful and avoid that area.”
Omega’s slender fingers traced over the map, unaware how irresistibly handsome she looked while strategizing. She primarily served as the behind-the-scenes tactician on her side. After a moment’s thought, Yu Zhiwan took out two vials and handed them over:
“Take these, keep them for self-defense later.”
Pei Yujiang’s gaze lingered between the metal case and these two mini spray bottles, her eyes unexpectedly growing moist before she quickly blinked. She realized she’d become somewhat softer since meeting Yu Zhiwan and she loved this change.
Kneeling down, she placed a tender, deliberate peck on the Omega’s cheek.
Zhiwan’s thought bubble: Is my wife about to go wild? What can I do except spoil her and join the madness? shrugs
