Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 56
In the dead of night, Pei Yujiang, who had just taken another shower, turned on her computer and saw a notification from a forum.
[Rant] Omega in heat is driving me crazy!
OP: My wife’s heat cycle has been getting worse lately. I’m away on a business trip and can’t go back to be with her. This time, her symptoms are pretty severe, she was even crying on the phone with me. Turns out she thought I was cheating on her with another Omega while I’m away. No matter how much I explain, she won’t listen. So frustrating!
1L: Mine’s the same. Every time she’s in heat and I’m not around, she gets super paranoid. Omegas can be so annoying sometimes.
3L: That’s not fair to say. Omegas act like this because they love you. A lot of them get emotionally fragile and sensitive during their heat, especially if they don’t get comfort for a long time. Some can even fall into depression. As Alphas, it’s our responsibility to be patient and accommodating during these times.
OP: And here’s the kicker! She video-called me and demanded to inspect my hotel room. Made me lift the bed covers, check under the bed, even scan the landline phone by the AC to see if I was hiding someone. All while sobbing like I was the one bullying her. Like, who’s really the victim here? Omegas can be so clingy!
The earlier replies had been civil, but as the OP continued venting, the discussion quickly devolved into an Alpha-Omega debate.
Some argued that Alphas should be more understanding after all, they turn into uncontrollable beasts during their rut, whereas Omegas just crave companionship during their heat. Some Omegas could even find comfort in just a pillow scented with their Alpha’s pheromones, unlike Alphas, who became irritable and aggressive toward everyone during their rut.
Other Alphas fired back, saying Omegas were just paranoid and used their heat as an excuse to act out.
As someone who had just spent half the day dealing with an Omega in heat, Pei Yujiang could relate though she didn’t find Yu Zhiwan annoying. The problem was, she wasn’t an Alpha and couldn’t provide a mark. It had taken her forever to coax Yu Zhiwan into taking suppressants, and she’d only felt at ease after watching her fall asleep.
Once Yu Zhiwan was asleep, Pei Yujiang carefully slipped out of bed and returned to her own room.
Seeing that the forum was still active late at night, she typed out a question in earnest:
[So, how can I ease an Omega’s suspicions or alleviate their heat symptoms?]
Within a minute, over a dozen replies flooded in, none of them helpful. Just as Pei Yujiang sighed and prepared to exit, the OP came back online.
OP replied: Ease? Yeah, right. You must not have an Omega of your own. There’s no “easing” heat symptoms.
273L (OP): [Image] So when you’ve got an Omega like this, you just suck it up. I canceled my hotel stay and bought a train ticket back to my wife. -v-
The image was a high-speed rail ticket.
The others still arguing in the thread: ?
Pei Yujiang: ?
Seriously? You just had to flex here, of all places?!
With a resigned sigh, Pei Yujiang closed the post.
Although she didn’t get the answer she wanted, being unexpectedly fed a mouthful of “dog food” (couple’s public affection) was still better than seeing Alphas and Omegas arguing in the forum posts.
The issue of AO equality was a never-ending debate that remained unresolved despite all the uproar. Although the state had introduced some laws to protect Omegas, many Alphas still didn’t truly respect them deep down. Because Omegas were physically weaker than Alphas, they stubbornly believed Omegas should stay at home to care for their husbands and children.
Pei Yujiang had seriously considered this issue before, but in reality, there was little she could do, people’s minds were ultimately beyond control.
Late into the night, after spending a long time comforting the Omega, Pei Yujiang was exhausted. She turned off her computer and went straight to bed, sleeping soundly until past ten the next morning. When she woke up, her head was throbbing faintly.
Yu Zhiwan seemed to have recovered. Hearing movement outside, Pei Yujiang quickly freshened up and stepped out, only to find Yu Zhiwan sitting at the dining table, idly playing with her Whac-A-Mole handheld game.
It was a small promotional game that came with a meal set, press the button, and the moles would pop up. It was good for training reflexes in blind people, but for a normal adult, it was a bit dull. Pei Yujiang had barely touched it, so seeing Yu Zhiwan pressing the buttons with such focus made her smile.
Glancing at the time, Pei Yujiang took out her phone to order takeout as a quick solution. But before she could, the Omega stopped her.
Yu Zhiwan tilted her face up, her red lips parting as she asked softly:
“Awake? My appointment with Dr. Zhou is at noon. Should we go now?”
Pei Yujiang: “…”
The question sent a chill down her spine, and she nearly bolted back to her room to grab suppressants until she heard Yu Zhiwan’s playful, exasperated voice:
“Why so serious? Can’t I even joke around now?”
Pei Yujiang had to admit she wasn’t the sharpest, she couldn’t tell if Yu Zhiwan was joking or serious. She moved a little closer, studying the Omega’s expression carefully. Only after confirming there was no telltale flush of heat on Yu Zhiwan’s face did she hesitantly sit down.
“You, right now…”
She didn’t dare bring up last night, desperately hoping Yu Zhiwan would just forget about it. She’d heard many Omegas lost their memory of their heat in the days following its end. Since she had given Yu Zhiwan suppressants to forcibly end the heat, it seemed unnaturally terminated heats didn’t work that way.
And for some reason, this Omega had thicker skin than her at times. Pei Yujiang felt a little wronged, she’d been teased by Yu Zhiwan more than once now.
Yu Zhiwan ran a hand over her smooth skin.
“What about me right now?”
Before Pei Yujiang could respond, her phone rang. She hurried back to her room to answer it.
It was Pei Jinhuai, inviting her and Yu Zhiwan over for a meal at the family villa.
“Takeout? You barely come back to Wing City and you want takeout? Come home and eat. Don’t you miss Aunt Kou’s cooking?”
After Pei Yujiang suggested she and Yu Zhiwan would just grab takeout, Pei Jinhuai immediately scolded her and insisted they come home.
Aunt Kou was the family chef who had been cooking for the original owner’s household for over a decade, practically watching her grow up and knowing her tastes inside out.
While the original owner was quite picky with food, Pei Yujiang fortunately wasn’t, eating whatever was served without complaint so she’d never given herself away in that regard.
Unable to refuse Pei Jinhuai’s insistence and not wanting to disappoint her, Pei Yujiang agreed, especially since no takeout had been ordered. Before setting off, she double-checked Yu Zhiwan’s condition, making sure her heat cycle had completely ended before deciding to go together.
With Jiang Wenxiu, an Alpha, present there, Pei Yujiang even messaged her on the way, reminding her to properly apply scent suppressant patches. Jiang Wenxiu didn’t reply, probably lost in her video games again.
Despite Pei Yujiang’s repeated explanations, Pei Jinhuai still saw Yu Zhiwan as her daughter-in-law at heart, especially after Yu Zhiwan brought significant profits to Yuerong. Her fondness for the young woman had only grown.
Long ago, when Pei Yujiang had gone as far as harming herself in an abandoned factory just to “pursue” Yu Zhiwan, Pei Jinhuai couldn’t bring herself to blame her daughter, though she had initially held some reservations about Yu Zhiwan.
But now, watching the two “perfect match” stride in neatly dressed under the butler’s guidance, Pei Jinhuai could easily overlook Yu Zhiwan’s disability, cheerfully inviting them to sit.
She could tell ever since meeting Yu Zhiwan, her daughter had become more driven and reliable, no longer the carefree, fickle person who lost interest in everything after a short burst of enthusiasm.
Pei Yujiang personally wheeled Yu Zhiwan into the living room, greeting Pei Jinhuai but noticing neither Jiang Wenxiu nor Fan Zhaozhao. Before she could ask, Pei Jinhuai seemed to read her mind and explained:
“Xiuxiu’s away for a study trip and won’t be back until tomorrow. Aunt Kou had an emergency at home, so Zhaozhao’s handling the cooking.”
Pei Yujiang knew Fan Zhaozhao was skilled in the kitchen, she had once been a cook before becoming a small restaurant owner and stepping back from hands-on work. But she caught the nuance in Pei Jinhuai’s wording and asked, “What happened to Aunt Kou’s family?”
Pei Jinhuai, ever the measured businesswoman, had said “emergency” rather than “something came up,” implying it wasn’t trivial. Frowning, she led the two younger women to the sofa, offering Yu Zhiwan some sliced fruit.
“Thank you, Mother Pei,” Yu Zhiwan said softly. Pei Yujiang, preoccupied with Aunt Kou’s situation, didn’t notice the address. Pei Jinhuai’s lips twitched briefly before turning serious again:
“Aunt Kou’s Omega niece is pregnant. The girl just turned adult not long ago. Though they took precautions with her partner, the chances during Alpha-Omega special cycles are naturally high safety measures aren’t foolproof.”
Here, she felt a flicker of relief that her child was a Beta, spared from such complications.
The relationship between Aunt Kou and Pei Jinhuai went beyond employer and employee, they were good friends. Aunt Kou was also very familiar with Pei Jinhuai’s family, which was why she vaguely confided in her about the situation, immediately seeking her advice.
Pei Jinhuai had never experienced anything like this before. After finally calming Aunt Kou down, she arranged for the driver to take her to the hospital to visit her niece. Later, when she saw her daughter, she couldn’t help but share the matter with her as well, naturally cautioning Pei Yujiang not to spread it.
Pei Yujiang remained silent.
Her thoughts drifted to the original plotline, which now seemed so distant.
In the original story, Liu Huanran, that irresponsible scumbag Alpha, had gotten Yu Zhiwan pregnant out of wedlock, leading to a series of misunderstandings. By the time they reconciled, the most challenging years of child-rearing had passed, leaving the Omega to raise the child alone for two or three years before the Alpha finally stepped in.
Pei Yujiang couldn’t help but glance at Yu Zhiwan.
The woman’s fair, flawless skin and graceful figure were accentuated as she held a piece of apple, listening attentively to their conversation without offering any input.
As the timeline shifted, the hardships Yu Zhiwan would have faced in the original novel were being avoided one by one. Pei Yujiang could also sense the healthy, vibrant energy radiating from the Omega, a far cry from their first meeting when she often kept her head bowed, hiding unknown sorrows beneath her serene exterior.
Suddenly, she had the urge to hold Yu Zhiwan’s hand.
The next moment, Pei Yujiang followed her instincts, gently grasping Yu Zhiwan’s fingers and giving them a light shake. Before the Omega could react, she quickly released her grip, leaving only a faint trace of lingering warmth.
“Whether they took precautions or not, any Alpha who knowingly engages in deep marking during an Omega’s vulnerable period when the risk of conception is high is absolute trash.”
As an outsider, Pei Yujiang couldn’t interfere in Aunt Kou’s family affairs. But since Pei Jinhuai had told her about it, she couldn’t resist venting.
Pei Jinhuai sighed helplessly.
“That’s true, but you know how the older generation is they always push for reconciliation rather than separation. And now that she’s pregnant, they can’t just let the child grow up without an Alpha parent, can they?”
Just then, Fan Zhaozhao finished cooking and asked Aunt Zhou to help serve the dishes. Uncomfortable discussing such matters in front of Fan Zhaozhao, Pei Yujiang changed the subject.
After dinner, Pei Jinhuai kept her and Yu Zhiwan back to discuss Yue Rong’s development plans, touching on upcoming new products and Pei Yujiang’s recent promotional efforts. The conversation stretched on longer than expected.
Pei Yujiang had planned to stay in Wing City for several days this time, so she even joined Pei Jinhuai for dinner, taking a stroll around the villa before leaving.
Pei Jinhuai was always busy with work, and there was no telling when she’d next see her daughter. It wasn’t as if she could drop everything to dine with Pei Yujiang every time she returned. Before they parted, she pulled Pei Yujiang aside, studying her daughter’s face for a moment before suddenly remarking with emotion:
“Yujiang, you’ve grown up.”
Pei Yujiang was already in her twenties, long past her developmental years, and her appearance hadn’t changed much. But in a parent’s eyes, their child would always be growing.
She didn’t fully understand, but she smiled obligingly, doing her best to play the role of a dutiful daughter to keep Pei Jinhuai happy.
Though Pei Jinhuai was a beauty, the faint crow’s feet at the corners of her eyes when she smiled betrayed the toll of her exhausting workload. The woman’s hand rested lightly on Pei Yujiang’s cheek, giving it a gentle pat.
“Good thing you’re not a real Alpha, otherwise the troubles would be too much sometimes.”
“Yu Jiang, treat Zhi Wan well.”
At that time, Pei Yujiang couldn’t fully grasp the meaning behind Pei Jinhuai’s words, but deep down, she had always felt a strong sense of responsibility toward Yu Zhiwan. Hearing this, she nodded firmly.
The weather was beautiful today, and Pei Yujiang didn’t want to head back so soon. Instead, she took Yu Zhiwan for a stroll around the area. Breathing in the damp early spring air of Wing City, Pei Yujiang stood beneath the towering pagoda by Wing Lake and suddenly patted Yu Zhiwan’s head.
“Feelings between Alphas and Omegas often defy logic because of pheromones, it’s really annoying.” She tilted her head slightly, savoring the soft, cool breeze drifting over the water. “That’s why there are so many moments, like today, when I feel especially grateful.”
“Good thing you don’t like Liu Huanran.”
Out of all the Omegas in the world, why is it that Yu Jiang only wants to protect Zhi Wan so badly?
Six in the afternoon!
