Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 52
Pei Yujiang knew Yu Zhiwan was wealthy, but she hadn’t expected her to splurge so generously on her. At first, she felt a flicker of delight, but then she thought it wasn’t worth it. She nudged Yu Zhiwan and whispered softly:
“The platform takes half of the donations…”
Since Green Lemon was a contracted streamer on the platform, he earned more from donations. Typically, contracted streamers got at least a 60-40 split, 60% for them, 40% for the platform. Pei Yujiang wasn’t under contract, so half of Yu Zhiwan’s thousand “deep-water torpedoes” would end up in the platform’s pocket. Just thinking about it made her heart ache.
But Yu Zhiwan didn’t seem to care. Instead, she tapped the table impatiently and said in a sweet yet petulant tone:
“I don’t want you singing for anyone else.”
Pei Yujiang had initially considered whether refusing would be impolite, but with Yu Zhiwan making such a demand and seeing the Omega’s rosy lips pouting slightly, she couldn’t bring herself to argue.
After all, there was no need to upset the female lead over some random, obnoxious streamer.
Pei Yujiang hummed in agreement and was about to explain to Green Lemon when another knock sounded at the door. This time, it was Pei Jinhuai’s assistant, who stood politely at the entrance without stepping inside and called out:
“Minister Pei, the CEO is looking for you.”
The “CEO” naturally referred to Pei Jinhuai, and if she was summoning Pei Yujiang at the company, it usually meant business. Hearing this, Pei Yujiang immediately stood up, intending to end the stream. But Yu Zhiwan seemed to sense her intention and lightly patted the back of her hand:
“Go ahead. I’ll handle it.”
Only then did Pei Yujiang belatedly remember, she’d nearly forgotten that Yu Zhiwan was her assistant, meant to support her during streams. So she gave Yu Zhiwan’s shoulder a gentle pat in return and murmured:
“Then I’ll be off?”
Yu Zhiwan responded with a bright, cheerful tone.
Before leaving, Pei Yujiang thoughtfully adjusted the microphone and camera angle for Yu Zhiwan, ensuring she wouldn’t have to reposition anything and could continue facing the screen effortlessly.
The audience and Green Lemon watched the entire exchange between the two. The moment Pei Yujiang left, Green Lemon was about to pick a fight with Yu Zhiwan, only to find that the woman who had just been speaking sweetly to Pei Yujiang now wore a frosty expression.
“What kind of shameless lowlife are you? Couldn’t find a place to act out in real life, so you had to come online and match with someone just to disgust them?”
Yu Zhiwan’s words were sharp and cutting, transmitted clearly through the microphone straight into Green Lemon’s ears.
Green Lemon was far from patient, and after being repeatedly insulted, he could no longer hold back. He blurted out:
“You fuck!”
Remembering they were live, he choked back the rest of the curse, though the murderous glare he shot at Yu Zhiwan spoke volumes.
Green Lemon was an Omega. Most male Omegas were perfectly normal, but he was one of the rare few who put on a high-pitched voice and wore borderline cross-dressing outfits, creating an awkward, mismatched image.
Though Pei Yujiang wasn’t an Alpha, her appearance alone was more captivating to Omegas than many actual Alphas. Green Lemon had had his eye on her for a while. Even though Pei Yujiang hadn’t listed her gender in her profile, his instincts told him from her commanding presence that this woman had to be an A.
And not just any A, one of considerable rank.
Therefore, the moment Yu Zhiwan appeared on screen, he felt a strong sense of crisis.
Qing Lemon had already prepared a set of excuses. If he lost the PK against Pei Yujiang, he would coax her into playing some flirtatious little games. If he won, it wouldn’t matter, he’d naturally ask for her contact details. In any case, there were plenty of ways to strike up a conversation.
But he never expected such a formidable rival to appear out of nowhere.
Yu Zhiwan could easily see through his intentions. Without even saying goodbye after the PK ended, she directly exited the stream.
By the time Pei Yujiang finished her tasks and returned, she saw that her livestream had already ended. Yu Zhiwan was sitting there, idly playing with her nails. Only when she heard the sound of the door opening did she look up:
“After the PK ended, I didn’t know what to do, and I couldn’t see the chat messages, so I just used voice commands to shut it down. That’s fine, right?”
Pei Yujiang glanced at the time:
“It’s fine. I’ve been streaming for a while anyway. Go get ready, we’ll be leaving together soon.”
The music festival had sessions on both Friday and Saturday, starting around 3:00 PM. Since weekends were for rest, not everyone might want to attend a team-building event then, so Pei Yujiang had opted for Friday tickets.
The festival lasted three hours. They would leave a little after 2:00 PM and head straight to the venue, effectively giving everyone half a day off. Later, a company shuttle would drop employees off at designated spots like subway stations, allowing them to go straight home.
Pei Yujiang had personally planned this event, and the employees had no complaints in fact, they were thrilled to skip half a day of work for a music festival. The atmosphere at Yue Rong was lively, filled with laughter and chatter.
When Pei Yujiang stepped out, she even saw people greeting her, a stark contrast to how the original owner had been treated.
Back then, whenever the original owner came to the company, she either caused trouble or tried to pick up attractive Omegas, who would avoid her at all costs.
Now, Pei Yujiang had transformed into a normal person, though the change had been gradual enough not to raise suspicion.
Everyone assumed she had matured after Yuerong’s recent crisis and, free from the influence of her former troublemaking friends, had become more vibrant and far less off-putting than before.
Yu Zhiwan asked, “Is the company going together by shuttle?”
“We’re using the company shuttle, but we’ll take a separate car. Aunt Fan and my mom will take Jiang Wenxiu and her classmate in one car, and the two of us will take another.” Pei Yujiang explained in detail. “But if you’d like, we can bring Zhao Manlin along too.”
Riding the company bus wouldn’t be as comfortable as a private car. When Pei Yujiang asked Zhao Manlin, she quickly packed up and came to their office.
Yu Zhiwan had few close friends, aside from Pei Yujiang, Zhao Manlin was the only one. Zhao Manlin had always looked out for her since they met. Initially, she had been worried when Yu Zhiwan distanced herself from Liu Huanran and started hanging around Pei Yujiang. But as Pei Yujiang gradually changed, her impression of her improved, and she no longer regarded her with the same wariness as before.
The walk to the stadium took about half an hour. The three of them chatted about everything under the sun along the way, and Pei Yujiang listened with great interest as Zhao Manlin recounted their college days.
Zhao Manlin mentioned that Yu Zhiwan had received scholarships every year in college, which completely covered her tuition and living expenses.
“Actually, Wanwan was quite impressive back then. If she had continued, she could have achieved even more.”
Thinking of this, Zhao Manlin couldn’t help but feel regret. Her own grades in school weren’t bad, but there was still a gap between her and a true academic powerhouse like Yu Zhiwan. Yu Zhiwan’s learning ability far surpassed that of many others, yet when it came to awards, she had a habit of “quitting while she was ahead.”
Even though Zhao Manlin and Yu Zhiwan were close, they didn’t know much about her past. Pei Yujiang, aware of this and not wanting to upset Yu Zhiwan, quickly steered the conversation elsewhere.
“My grades were terrible, no talking about awards in front of me!”
Pei Yujiang wasn’t lying. In the era she was born, education was limited to the basics just enough to read and write. She had never attended formal schooling, so of course, she couldn’t compare to these top-tier university graduates.
Yu Zhiwan chuckled softly, as if recalling something.
From a distance, the music festival’s massive venue was packed with people. Getting inside was a hassle, and Pei Yujiang, attending for the first time, was grateful she had booked a VIP box, sparing her the chaos of squeezing through the crowd for ticket checks.
Most of the celebrities performing at the festival had their own fan merchandise, but it was rare to see an entire company attending as a group like theirs. The majority were individual fans. Not far from the entrance, Pei Yujiang spotted two fans holding light sticks of different colors arguing with security apparently, light sticks weren’t allowed, but some fans were trying to sneak them in to support their idols.
“Let’s go this way.”
Pei Yujiang turned the wheelchair, guiding Yu Zhiwan in another direction to avoid getting swept up in the crowd.
Pei Jinhuai and Fan Zhaozhao, the married couple, were also with them nearby. Neither of them were fans of celebrities, they were just there for the atmosphere.
“These celebrity fans are insane. I once saw a video online of them fighting at an event,” Fan Zhaozhao remarked to Pei Jinhuai as she handed their tickets to the staff member leading the way. “Do you think Yujiang will have fans fighting over her now that she’s gone viral?”
Pei Yujiang, who had just taken a sip of water, nearly choked and quickly pulled Yu Zhiwan along to hurry ahead.
They hadn’t arrived particularly early, reaching the venue just as rehearsals were ending and the main event was about to begin. Dazzling lights flooded the stadium, far surpassing the atmosphere of any KTV or bar Pei Yujiang had ever seen.
A fruit platter and snacks had been prepared, specifically for their use during the concert. Pei Yujiang settled comfortably onto the sofa in their small box, impressed by the excellent seating it offered an unobstructed view without blocking others and wasn’t too close to the speakers. She had done her research beforehand and learned that those sitting near the front often suffered from ringing ears due to the noise.
The music festival started on the hour. After the host introduced the lineup in detail, the deafening cheers from the audience erupted.
At first, Pei Yujiango didn’t quite get the hype, but by the time the first performer finished, she found herself clapping along enthusiastically.
Although she didn’t know this singer, Pei Yuqian soon became immersed in the fully live vocal music feast. The second act was a girl group whose fiery dance instantly ignited the entire venue. Pei couldn’t help swaying slightly to the rhythm while glancing at Yu Zhiwan beside her.
It was a pity Yu couldn’t see the performance.
The thought flashed through Pei’s mind, but she didn’t want Yu to miss out on the music festival experience. Just like before, she began describing the show during musical interludes, careful not to disrupt Yu’s auditory enjoyment.
Every artist invited to the festival, regardless of fame, had genuine talent. With lip-syncing prohibited and all performances requiring live vocals, by the time the fourth act appeared, Pei’s enthusiasm had completely transformed from when she first arrived.
She realized the initial lineup announcement had followed alphabetical order, while the actual sequence was randomized. This performer was Fang Nianjing.
Fang wore a pristine white floor-length dress, simple yet elegant without excessive embellishments, her slender waist and broad shoulders carrying the look effortlessly. For the festival, she’d dyed her hair a pale gold that complemented the snow-white gown perfectly.
Though typically sporting a more domineering “big sister” style, the soft dress gave her an ethereal coldness. Combined with the snowflake effects behind her, she looked like a winter fairy emerging from deep frost.
The spring venue was comfortably warm with air conditioning. During some simple dance moves in the song, Fang’s wave motion revealed her smooth, rounded shoulder with a glimpse of tattoo marks beneath. As fan screams surged like tidal waves, Fang quickly readjusted her dress, a hasty movement that somehow preserved the earlier beauty.
Pei plucked a peanut, cracked its shell, and let the crimson skin and snow-white kernel fall into her palm before popping it into her mouth. After savoring it, she commented:
“Fang Nianjing may be an actress, but she sings quite well.”
While not as professional as dedicated singers understandable as a crossover artist, she performed admirably. Pei held a favorable impression, especially since neither Fang nor Chen Lulu seemed involved in that previous incident.
Yu rarely spoke during performances, preferring silent appreciation, but now asked: “Have you heard of ‘Frenzied Jing Third Lady’?”
Pei hadn’t, she truly paid no attention to entertainment circles.
During the intermission as hosts led games with previous performers, Yu explained: “‘Frenzied Jing Third Lady’ is Fang’s nickname. She entered the industry three or four years ago, scouted before graduating college. Initially gaining fans through her looks, she signed with an obscure subsidiary of a major company.”
“She worked relentlessly, starting with bit parts like maidservant roles. Once she performed her own stunt in a minor fight scene rolling in mud, jumping into winter river water just for realism. A director admired her dedication and cast her as third female lead.”
“That drama flopped, but Fang Nianjing unexpectedly went viral because of a highlight reel showcasing her looks. Apparently, her face is so expressive it leaves a lasting impression, quickly gaining popularity. Many watched the show just for her, even though the leads’ values were problematic. She played a strong, independent businesswoman, a domineering CEO and the company has since branded her as the ‘Alpha of Your Dreams.'”
“In other words, she has a lot of girlfriend fans. She initially blew up because of her looks, but she also works really hard.”
This was the first time Pei Yujiang heard Yu Zhiwan gossip about the entertainment industry, and she listened with great interest. Looking down at the crowd, she noticed quite a few fan banners for Fang Nianjing even though it was a music festival.
Seems like she’s pretty popular.
Fang Nianjing is indeed stunning. Pei Yujiang is confident in her own looks, but Fang Nianjing shares her striking features, though with a more icy, untouchable vibe like an unattainable high-altitude flower, the kind that easily captivates young Omega girls.
Pei Yujiang suddenly remembered an unwritten rule in the entertainment industry: idols who rely on fan support and maintain a boyfriend/girlfriend persona usually can’t date during their career peak doing so risks mass fan exodus. So what about Fang Nianjing? Does she have the freedom to date?
“Who knows?”
When she asked, Yu Zhiwan just shrugged, unsure. But Fang Nianjing, with her ethereal, untouchable aura, doesn’t seem like the type who’d be into Omegas. Pei Yujiang occasionally came across her online updates, most of which described her as unapproachable and distant.
The next song started, and Pei Yujiang stopped paying attention to Fang Nianjing, excitedly turning her focus to the stage. Halfway through, she realized she’d forgotten to film her vlog and scrambled for her phone.
She recorded a clip of the singer performing, turning up the volume so the music came through clearly, then panned to the snacks on their table. She nudged Yu Zhiwan with her elbow, silently asking if she could appear in the video.
Yu Zhiwan responded by leaning her head closer. Pei Yujiang nearly knocked her over in surprise and quickly steadied her.
The music festival’s energy surged in waves. After filming a few clips, Pei Yujiang put her phone away and fully immersed herself cheering, clapping, even more hyped than Yu Zhiwan, who had invited her.
As the final song approached, amid the roaring crowd, Yu Zhiwan tugged at Pei Yujiang’s wrist, signaling her to lean down.
Having known each other for so long, they had a natural understanding. From the way Yu Zhiwan pulled her, Pei Yujiang could guess what she wanted. She bent down, bringing her ear close to Yu Zhiwan’s lips, feeling the Omega’s warm breath.
“Let’s grab dinner after this. Boss Ji is back, we’ll go with her.”
Pei Yujiang wasn’t fond of Boss Ji and froze for a second. But then she thought, if she refused, Yu Zhiwan would end up going alone with her, which was even worse.
While she hesitated, Yu Zhiwan whispered again:
“Oh, and I have a gift for you.”
The moment the words left Yu Zhiwan’s lips, Pei Yujiang felt a slight sting on her earlobe just a brief pinch of pain. Instinctively, she hissed and reached up, her fingers brushing against a tiny star-shaped ear cuff.
She didn’t have pierced ears, so the clip-ons pinched a little at first, but she quickly got used to it. Just as Pei Yujiang was about to take them off, her fingertips were covered by the woman’s delicate hand. Amid the lively music, the Omega’s soft neck brushed against hers, light as a feather, tickling her skin.
“Boss Ji was lying to you.” A smile played at the corners of Yu Zhiwan’s lips as she quietly admired the blush creeping over Pei Yujiang’s fair earlobes. The flickering lights stung her eyes, but all she could see was how adorable the woman before her was. “Happy birthday, that part is true.”
