Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 37
With Yu Zhiwan’s greeting, the woman beside Pei Yujiang pressed the instant coffee machine, elegantly picked up a sugar cube with tweezers, and walked toward the Omega in the wheelchair.
“Yeah, there was some business in Xiangcheng. The old man insisted I go back so annoying.” The woman changed the subject. “But running into you here is quite a coincidence. Our plane tickets were even next to each other. Don’t you think that’s fate?”
Yu Zhiwan affirmed, “It is.”
The woman laughed.
She couldn’t see, and Pei Yujiang didn’t speak up, so Yu Zhiwan naturally couldn’t recognize her just from the slightly hurried breathing. But Pei Yujiang could tell this woman was an Alpha.
She stood over 1.7 meters tall, with a straight posture, dressed in a tailored gray women’s suit despite the cold weather. The craftsmanship was exquisite, clearly expensive.
Though Alphas usually wore suppressant patches in public, Pei Yujiang, standing close, could detect a faint scent likely mahogany pheromones, aggressive even before fully spreading.
The Alpha naturally sat beside Yu Zhiwan. The two looked like they knew each other well so much so that an outsider might mistake them for a perfect couple. After all, the Alpha was strikingly attractive, flawless in both figure and face.
Pei Yujiang wondered if Yu Zhiwan had ever touched her face.
Yu Zhiwan asked, “Are you still busy over there?”
“Not too bad,” the Alpha replied vaguely, sipping her coffee. Instant coffee at the airport was barely passable for someone used to hand-ground brews, and the Alpha frowned slightly, clearly dissatisfied with the taste. “What about you? Where are you working now?”
Pei Yujiang found a seat nearby not too close, but just within earshot even if they lowered their voices.
So this act was a reunion of old friends.
“Not too busy. I’m going to Xiangcheng for rehabilitation therapy. I tried some recovery exercises recently, and the doctor said there’s hope, so I want to give it a shot.”
“Really?”
The Alpha seemed genuinely happy for Yu Zhiwan, immediately patting her shoulder. Yu Zhiwan didn’t mind and chatted with her a bit more about work, though they couldn’t discuss anything too confidential in public.
Before long, boarding time arrived, and Pei Yujiang followed them onto the plane.
The vast tarmac of Yicheng Airport came into view, the white wings of the plane gleaming in the morning light like a giant bird ready to take flight. Walking down the glass corridor, Pei Yujiang couldn’t help but grumble inwardly apparently, the ticket she hadn’t gotten had gone to this woman.
Once on the plane, Pei Yujiang realized she was seated right behind them, giving her a clear view of the Alpha’s interactions with Yu Zhiwan.
The Alpha attentively placed a cushion behind Yu Zhiwan’s back and helped her settle into the seat. The VIP business class seats were spacious and comfortable, with plush sofa-like chairs that could even recline perfect for someone with disabilities.
Pei Yujiang opened the disposable amenity kit and put in her earplugs. She had no interest in the conversation between the two anymore. Having stayed up all night, she was dead tired and needed to catch up on sleep.
Midway through, turbulence jolted her awake.
Turbulence on a plane was common, and unless it was severe, the captain could usually handle it without much fuss. Pei Yujiang, however, was naturally vigilant. After waking up, she took a brief glance around before trying to go back to sleep only to hazily see the Alpha offering Yu Zhiwan a sip of water.
Pei Yujiang removed one earplug and heard the Alpha ask gently:
“Thirsty? Have some water.”
An Alpha being this attentive to an Omega went beyond simple assistance for a disabled person or friendly interaction. Yu Zhiwan’s legs might be impaired, but her hands were perfectly fine. The Alpha’s behavior reeked of ulterior motives.
Pei Yujiang thought of Liu Huanran. Yu Zhiwan was the heroine of this world, it was no surprise that so many Alphas would be vying for her attention.
She sat up straight and, through the gap between the seats, saw Yu Zhiwan shake her head in polite refusal, taking the cup from the Alpha’s hand but only wetting her lips with a small sip.
Unless it was a short trip, Yu Zhiwan rarely drank much during travel, at most moistening her dry lips. She was afraid of needing to use the restroom and inconveniencing others something the Alpha clearly hadn’t considered.
The flight from Wing City to Xiang City took about three hours, not exactly a short distance. The Alpha then asked if Yu Zhiwan was hungry and offered to ask the flight attendant for some snacks like cake to tide her over.
Yu Zhiwan declined again, thanking her for the kindness. Pei Yujiang put her earplugs back in and lay down, but sleep eluded her this time. Her seat was by the window, and when she turned her head, she could see the clear, pristine sky outside.
She was wide awake now.
Giving up, she turned her attention to the in-flight entertainment. For most people, the onboard TV was dull, broadcasting nothing but news, but Pei Yujiang found it oddly engaging.
A wildfire had broken out in a city in one of the states, and the governor was requesting external aid. The federal government had already dispatched helicopters for firefighting and rescue efforts, with neighboring cities also lending support. The broadcast showed a touching scene the governor personally assisting in disaster relief, guiding the homeless to temporary shelters in safe zones for women, children, and the elderly.
Two hundred years ago, this planet had already begun experiencing various disasters nature’s warning to humanity.
Yet few paid attention to the wrath of the very earth that nurtured them. Humans, convinced of their dominion over the planet, believed their advanced machinery could conquer the world even the universe.
Later, the TV shifted to coverage of Wing City’s governor sharing insights on flood control, confidently declaring, “Officials and citizens must stand united.” Pei Yujiang rolled her eyes, put her earplugs back in, and tried to rest again.
When they disembarked, the Alpha asked Yu Zhiwan where she was staying and offered to take her there. Upon learning Yu Zhiwan had no fixed residence at the moment, she eagerly invited her to stay at her place.
Pei Yujiang had had enough.
But she had spent the entire flight sulking and pretending to be asleep, she couldn’t just suddenly speak up now to assert her presence.
Pei Yujiang’s mind raced rapidly.
In the restroom on the first floor of Xiangcheng Airport, a woman stood by the relatively quiet mother-and-child room entrance and dialed Yu Zhiwan’s number. When there was no answer on the first try, Pei Yujiang called again, wondering what she and that Alpha could be discussing that took a full ring before the call connected.
“What’s up?”
Yu Zhiwan’s voice came through from the other side of the airport.
Pei Yujiang cleared her throat:
“I’m planning to come to Xiangcheng tomorrow for some business. Have you found a hotel yet? I’ll come straight to you tomorrow just send me your location.”
Yu Zhiwan sounded surprised on the other end:
“You’re coming to Xiangcheng tomorrow?”
Pei Yujiang hummed in affirmation but before she could explain her prepared excuse, the wailing cry of a baby suddenly erupted. An Omega holding a child while talking on the phone looked flustered and, spotting Pei Yujiang, seemed to see a savior:
“Miss, is there anyone in the mother-and-child room? Could you help me hold my baby for a moment, yes, yes,” she continued into the phone, “I’m at Xiangcheng Airport, wait for me at Exit 13A later. Remember to bring new teething sticks for the baby, it’s crying!”
“So you actually arrived today.”
Ten minutes later, after helping the Omega, Pei Yujiang leisurely made her way to the location Yu Zhiwan had provided. By then, the Alpha had already left in a hurry. Otherwise, had they met, Pei Yujiang wouldn’t have known how to handle the awkwardness that would have made her want to dig a hole in the ground.
Yu Zhiwan couldn’t see, but the Alpha’s eyes worked perfectly fine, they must have spotted her. It wasn’t like she could cover the Alpha’s mouth to stop them from talking, right?
Pei Yujiang smiled awkwardly, thankful that Yu Zhiwan couldn’t see her expression, and decided to change the subject:
“Did you book a hotel? Should I make the reservation?”
Yu Zhiwan: “I’ve already booked.”
But she had only reserved a room for herself.
Pei Yujiang had never been to Xiangcheng during peacetime. The city was far more bustling than Yicheng and covered a much larger area. Since it wasn’t peak travel season, Pei Yujiang hadn’t bothered to book a room for herself in advance, thinking she could just choose one upon arrival.
Only after arriving did she learn that it was Xiangcheng’s Investment Festival, and most hotels were fully booked. Yu Zhiwan had secured a room at this one by booking early. The remaining options were either poor-quality yet expensive or located in remote industrial parks far from the city center.
Hearing this, Yu Zhiwan proactively handed over her ID:
“It’s fine. We can share one room. I booked a king-size bed.”
The hotel was a four-star establishmentwith five stars being the highest rating, Xiangcheng’s four-star hotels were already considered luxurious, complete with amenities, an outdoor pool, gardens, and spacious, comfortable accommodations.
As they rode the elevator up together, Pei Yujiang, knowing she’d been exposed, couldn’t resist asking while rubbing her nose:
“Who was that Alpha sister?”
“Alpha sister?” Yu Zhiwan paused before realizing who she meant. “My high school classmate, surnamed Ji. She works in self-media now. Everyone calls her Boss Ji these days.”
Boss Ji. Pei Yujiang turned the name over in her mind.
She wasn’t that familiar with the business circle, or perhaps Boss Ji wasn’t a prominent enough figure, so Pei Yujiang had never heard of her. But with the surname Ji and that flamboyant demeanor, this person definitely wasn’t any good.
The kind who clearly had designs on Yu Zhiwan.
Pei Yujiang silently condemned Boss Ji in her heart.
“But why did you go to the nursing room?”
Yu Zhiwan later asked her as well. Pei Yujiang hesitated for a moment before stammering out an admission:
“At first, I saw you two chatting happily and didn’t want to interrupt. Then I wanted to contact you but felt awkward, so I thought I’d find a quiet spot.”
She had noticed that most shopping malls had nursing rooms, but they were rarely used especially in places like airports. It was unlikely many people would bring one- or two-year-olds on flights.
Who would’ve thought she’d actually run into someone? The woman had been flustered and asked for her help, so of course Pei Yujiang couldn’t refuse. She ended up holding the little girl while the mother changed her diaper.
Yu Zhiwan let out an “Oh.”
She didn’t ask why Pei Yujiang had come to Xiangcheng, and Pei Yujiang didn’t volunteer the information. After resting in the hotel for a while and recovering their energy, Yu Zhiwan, lying on the bed, asked:
“Yujiang, want to go grab some good food with me?”
For Pei Yujiang, delicious food was the ultimate temptation, a cure-all remedy. Any lingering bad mood was instantly swept away as she cheerfully replied, “Sure!”
She quickly got ready and helped Yu Zhiwan up from the bed. Earlier, she had skimmed through some novel recommendations on her phone but found them boring, so she took a short nap on the couch. She hadn’t even looked up any food guides for Xiangcheng, planning to just grab a quick lunch. But now that Yu Zhiwan wanted to eat out with her, she was more than happy to go.
However, her good mood didn’t last long. At the elevator, she ran into none other than that Alpha, Boss Ji, who was coming up.
Boss Ji greeted them with a bright smile. “Hey~”
“Both of you rested up? Any restaurants in mind? My treat today.”
The moment Boss Ji finished speaking, Pei Yujiang realized she had been waiting here to join them and immediately felt a surge of resistance. But since she was Yu Zhiwan’s friend, Pei Yujiang couldn’t outright refuse and just gave a tepid response.
Yet the moment they stepped outside, she was met with a provocation.
Boss Ji had changed into a stylish outfit—cargo pants and knee-high boots—looking flashy as she dangled a car key from her slender fingers. Pei Yujiang recognized the logo as a luxury sports car brand before hearing her chuckle:
“Wanwan, this little girl doesn’t look very old. Does she even know how to drive?”
This was the first time since adulthood that Pei Yujiang had been called a “little girl.”
She didn’t have a baby face or a particularly cute demeanor her vibe was bright, sunny, and undeniably mature. Though she wasn’t yet 25, Boss Ji and Yu Zhiwan were high school classmates, meaning they were around the same age. Yu Zhiwan was only two or three years older, so how was she a “little girl”?
And that “little girl” remark was dripping with mockery. Pei Yujiang’s temper flared.
“Sister Zhiwan, you’ll have to take care of me in Xiangcheng, I’m so clueless,” Pei Yujiang glanced at Madam Ji while rapidly recalling the sarcastic tone of the female lead from the novel she’d just read. “Not as sharp as this sister here. I’ll be staying in Xiangcheng for a while, where are you heading next? I can drive you.”
Though she’d arrived by plane without her car, she could always buy one on the spot!
This Alpha clearly had ill intentions toward Yu Zhiwan, just like Liu Huanran. She absolutely couldn’t let someone like that get too close to Yu Zhiwan.
Pei Yujiang: How’s my green tea act?
Yu Zhiwan: More like raw tea.
Pei Yujiang: …
Madam Ji: Rival (×) Wingwoman (√)
Fish Sauce fails at green tea tactics, so she buckles down to focus on her career, earning money to support Zhiwan.
