Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 33
Witnessing this scene, Pei Yujiang slightly furrowed her brows.
Liu Huanran kept claiming to love Yu Zhiwan, yet she always wanted to keep her home life stable while indulging in affairs outside. The woman just now was practically draped over her, how could she still pretend innocence at this point? What was this if not playing with ambiguity, where it doesn’t count as “emotional cheating” unless it goes all the way?
No, perhaps it wasn’t even emotional cheating, since the two had never officially been together.
The opulently decorated hall was clearly a place for revelry. Though the music drowned out some of the noise, the sounds of intimate kisses still reached her ears.
Most people would feel their cheeks flush and hearts race at such sounds, but Pei Yujiang, hardened by years in the apocalypse, had long grown numb to it.
Just then, Zhao Shuangshuang patted her shoulder, pulling her out of her thoughts:
“Shall we eat first?”
Given the environment, Pei Yujiang had already lost much of her appetite. Who in their right mind would arrange a dinner in a club? But since they were already here, she steeled herself and followed inside.
The dining area was relatively quiet, a private room decorated in deep gold tones, effectively insulating them from the noise outside. The meal was a pre-set course, and Zhao Shuangshuang poured her a glass of plum wine, raising it in a toast.
Pei Yujiang studied the deep red liquid in the transparent goblet for a moment but made no move to drink it.
Zhao Shuangshuang noticed her hesitation. “What’s wrong? Has it been so long that you don’t recognize your sister anymore?”
In the past, the original Pei Yujiang had truly treated Zhao Shuangshuang like an elder sister, confiding in her about every worry and following her advice without question.
But Pei Yujiang had no habit of drinking outside, especially with someone like Zhao Longshuang, she didn’t dare risk it.
After briefly observing her, Pei Yujiang suspected she might even slip something “extra” into the drink.
Zhao Shuangshuang took a sip from her glass, the soft yellow light from the pendant lamp gliding over the wine before catching on her delicate collarbone. By November, Wing City was nearly winter, swept by cold winds, but the heated room allowed her to wear just a strappy dress. Her lip gloss left a faint mark on the rim as she leaned forward, propping herself on the table with a knowing smile.
“Yujiang, the Alpha pheromone extract I gave you must have expired by now. Why haven’t you gone to Old Jiang to get more?”
The original Pei Yujiang had always obtained her Alpha pheromone extract from Zhao Shuangshuang, with Old Jiang being the usual supplier she was introduced to.
This included not just the extract but also various performance-enhancing drugs, though those were taken gradually over time to minimize bodily harm while boosting her “capabilities” to match an Alpha’s.
After Pei Yujiang transmigrated, the original’s medication cycle had just ended. She was supposed to collect the next batch on schedule, but Pei Yujiang never went. Instead, she underwent a medical checkup, confirmed the drugs weren’t severely harmful, and stopped using them altogether, even taking time to detoxify her body.
Not to mention that all medicine is somewhat toxic, Zhao Longshuang, posing as a caring older sister, had coaxed and deceived the original owner into purchasing Alpha pheromone extract, an act that essentially encouraged illegal behavior.
Only the original owner could have been foolish enough to fall for such a trick.
Of course, this also had a lot to do with the original owner’s own questionable morals.
“What else could it be? I got caught using the stuff, and that old woman told my mom. She’s been keeping a close eye on me lately, haven’t you noticed she’s even controlling when I go out now?”
When the original owner was in a bad mood, she’d snap at anyone. Pei Yujiang mimicked her tone, frowning in displeasure as she shoved her drink forward and aggressively pressed the service bell several times:
“My throat hurts bring me a coconut juice instead!”
The server was already waiting outside and knocked upon hearing the bell. Zhao Longshuang gave Pei Yujiang an inscrutable glance before pausing and telling the server:
“Coconut juice is too sweet. Bring chrysanthemum tea instead, it’ll help cool her down.”
This bitter herbal tea was practically torture for someone like the original owner, who loved indulgence. Pei Yujiang could tell Zhao Longshuang was testing her and acted even more irritated.
Whether Zhao Longshuang truly bought her outburst or not, she tapped her neatly manicured nails on the table before slowly sitting back down, her expression returning to normal as she spoke in their usual conversational tone:
“That Omega you mentioned wanting to pursue, Yu Zhiwan, right?”
Zhao Longshuang and the original owner had always been blunt with each other. The original owner had taken a liking to Yu Zhiwan some time ago and mentioned it to Zhao Longshuang, so it wasn’t surprising she remembered.
Hearing Yu Zhiwan’s name, Pei Yujiang kept her expression neutral and nodded in acknowledgment. Zhao Longshuang showed interest in the topic and fired off several questions in quick succession:
“How far along are you? I remember she’s your subordinate’s girlfriend, right? Are you planning to steal her away? You mentioned organizing a team-building event before did you?”
At first, Pei Yujiang listened calmly, but then she suddenly slammed her hand on the table with a loud bang, startling Zhao Longshuang. Pei Yujiang’s face twisted with anger:
“Whose subordinate’s girlfriend?! Who told you that, Shuang-jie? I’ll tear their mouth off!”
Pei Yujiang genuinely despised Liu Huanran, so the fury in her voice wasn’t entirely feigned. Without missing a beat, she indignantly pointed out that Liu Huanran was not Yu Zhiwan’s girlfriend they had never publicly confirmed a relationship, and it was all Liu Huanran’s one-sided delusion.
She cursed several more times, mostly directing her wrath at Liu Huanran, ranting to Zhao Longshuang about how shameless he was for spreading rumors about her and Yu Zhiwan behind their backs.
“Shuang-jie, my feelings for her are genuine, I’m not just fooling around. If you find out who’s been badmouthing me, point them out, and I’ll tear them apart right in front of you!”
Pei Yujiang had striking, bold features, the kind that exuded glamour. Normally composed, her temper made her look downright intimidating. Her beautiful blue eyes narrowed with intensity, her expression deadly serious.
Zhao Longshuang studied her for a moment before suddenly chuckling and reaching out to pat Pei Yujiang’s shoulder.
“Alright, it’s good that you have this sincerity. You’ve grown up and taken responsibility now. But are you really giving up on that pheromone extract? I only placed the order because you said you really wanted it. The supply hasn’t been cut off, I’ve been maintaining regular deliveries at fixed intervals. This is putting me in a difficult position, sister.”
“Yujiang, even between sisters, we must settle accounts clearly. If their supply gets cut off without proper justification, I definitely can’t bear the losses. If this hole can’t be filled, those kinds of people can be quite dangerous.”
Zhao Longshuang sighed, looking at Pei Yujiang with feigned regret:
“I warned you before once you get involved with these people, it’s hard to break free cleanly.”
Anyone dealing in black market goods obviously wouldn’t be upstanding citizens. The original host should have realized this, but she had been repeatedly coaxed and manipulated by Zhao Longshuang into going down this path.
All the contact methods and information were in Zhao Longshuang’s hands. Now she was trying to wash her hands clean of it, clearly intending to use this as leverage against her.
If Zhao Longshuang exposed her, forget about reputation, Pei Yujiang would likely need to undergo several police tests before being released.
Pei Yujiang didn’t want to shoulder the blame for the original host’s misdeeds, but the original had already handed her vulnerabilities to Zhao Longshuang on a silver platter, unknowingly making a dangerous bargain.
Outwardly unfazed, Pei Yujiang nodded at Zhao Longshuang with feigned nervousness:
“I’ll think about it some more.”
Knowing when to stop pressing, Zhao Longshuang changed the subject, seeing that Pei Yujiang seemed to get the message.
The meal was tasteless for Pei Yujiang. Noticing her unusual behavior, Zhao Longshuang didn’t eat much either, leaving most of the food untouched and wasted.
As they parted, Zhao Longshuang offered perfunctory courtesy to see her off. Pei Yujiang declined, driving away under Zhao’s gaze and using a sore throat as an excuse to avoid further invitations.
Every time the original host went out with Zhao Longshuang, Zhao would take her to see pretty girls letting her look but never allowing her to “have the main course,” ostensibly playing along while actually waiting for the original to lose patience and seek it out herself.
Pei Yujiang couldn’t perfectly mimic the original’s emotions and preferences. She wasn’t the original and couldn’t live according to that persona forever. Zhao Longshuang was already suspicious, and it was unclear when this confrontation would fully erupt.
Preoccupied, Pei Yujiang drove back to her neighborhood, noticing the streetlights were out but her home was lit. Remembering she’d turned off the lights when leaving, she quickly parked and hurried inside, instinctively adopting a defensive stance as she opened the door.
But instead of an intruder, she was met with the familiar figure of Yu Zhiwan.
Only then did it dawn on her, she’d given Yu Zhiwan a spare key for convenience.
Hearing the door, the Omega in the hallway turned, her slender fingers pointing to the hangover soup on the dining table.
Yu Zhiwan hadn’t come without reason. Knowing Pei Yujiang had a dinner engagement, she’d prepared the soup for her.
Though Pei Yujiang hadn’t been drinking, she was still feeling restless. But upon unexpectedly receiving such kindness, a warm current surged in her heart. Just as she was about to express her gratitude, she heard the Omega’s soft voice:
“You came back so soon?” Yu Zhiwan asked. “Didn’t you stay longer to admire more pretty girls for me?”
Pei Yujiang: She cares about me.
Yu Zhiwan: I’m being sarcastic.
