Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 24
Unlike Alphas who become extremely irritable during their rut, Omegas in heat not only enter a state of heightened fertility and crave an Alpha’s mark, but their emotions also become fragile.
Without their Alpha by their side, Omegas might surround themselves with items carrying their Alpha’s scent or pay for professional companionship services. In short, an Omega left completely alone would struggle to endure their heat normally.
Pei Yujiang, who had once been an Alpha, understood the discomfort of a rut. Translating that experience to an Omega, she could easily imagine how unbearable Yu Zhiwan’s condition must be now.
Beads of sweat glistened on the woman’s fair nose, her rapid breaths flushing her cheeks with color. Her hands twisted restlessly in her clothes, her helpless expression making Pei Yujiang feel that if she refused Yu Zhiwan now, the Omega’s tears would spill like water from an opened floodgate.
If Pei Yujiang were still an Alpha, she would have rejected this ambiguous request without hesitation. But as a Beta now, she couldn’t mark Yu Zhiwan and could guarantee she wouldn’t take advantage of her.
Even so, should she still refuse?
While she hesitated, Yu Zhiwan’s condition worsened. Not daring to delay any longer, Pei Yujiang gritted her teeth and stepped forward, lifting Yu Zhiwan from the wheelchair.
This might have been the first time she held Yu Zhiwan like thispreviously in the hospital, she had carried the wheelchair with her in it.
The Omega in her arms felt light, almost weightless. Pei Yujiang was careful not to grip too tightly, afraid of hurting her, and gently set her down on a chair.
Seeing the unease flicker across Yu Zhiwan’s face at their sudden separation, Pei Yujiang softened her voice to explain:
“I’ll stay with you, but we should dry your hair first, shouldn’t we?”
Worried Yu Zhiwan might catch a cold or become too agitated, she took out a hairdryer and began drying the Omega’s hair herself.
Yu Zhiwan’s hair was long but clearly well-maintained trimmed regularly, silky smooth, and thick, with no visible part line. The faint orchid fragrance of her shampoo lingered in the slightly damp strands, the cool moisture gradually chased away by the warm breeze from the dryer.
Pei Yujiang’s fingertips pressed gently against her scalp, massaging in slow circles.
Her massage technique had always been effective. The Omega sat quietly in the chair, eyes half-lidded in contentment like a lazy cat.
Just as Pei Yujiang’s fingers worked more firmly against her temples, Yu Zhiwan’s clear voice suddenly broke the silence:
“You’re not planning to put me to sleep and move me to the other room, are you?”
Pei Yujiang, who had indeed been considering exactly that: “…” Was she that obvious?
Damn it. Miscalculation.
With her plan foiled, Pei Yujiang could only turn off the hairdryer, unplug it, and obediently carry Yu Zhiwan to her own bed.
Her bed was soft and clean, and so was the Omega. It wasn’t that Pei Yujiang minded sharing, she wasn’t particularly fussy but an awkward tension had begun to seep into the air between them.
Pei Yujiang had never slept alone with someone before. The closest she’d come was sharing a tent with a few close female Alpha friends, all sprawled together in one big sleeping area, chatting and laughing nothing like this current situation.
When she had carried Yu Zhiwan earlier, Pei Yujiang had accidentally brushed against her disabled legs.
Yu Zhiwan’s legs lacked sensation but weren’t amputated. They appeared well-maintained, likely receiving regular massages to promote blood circulation and prevent muscle atrophy. At first glance, they didn’t look much different from normal legs.
Though slightly thinner than average after all, massage alone couldn’t replace exercise in maintaining muscle tone.
Her skin was soft and smooth, almost poreless. Not just her face; sometimes Pei Yujiang would catch glimpses of her collarbone or the delicate ankles peeking from beneath her nightgown every visible inch was flawless ivory.
Had she not been disabled, she would undoubtedly have been a breathtaking beauty driving countless admirers wild.
Now this beauty lay in her bed, gently searching for her hand before covering it with her own, their fingers intertwining.
Women’s hands were always soft, like water. Since crossing over, Pei Yujiang’s body had reverted to its pre-battlefield condition, her palms smooth. Yet Yu Zhiwan’s were even softer, carefully avoiding the calloused spots as their fingers laced together. Her breath was light, and Pei Yujiang could faintly detect the Omega’s pheromones curling toward her.
During heat cycles, Omega pheromones took on a more… enticing quality, as if biologically designed to provoke Alpha marking instincts a primal temptation no Alpha could resist. But as a Beta now, Pei Yujiang felt no such urges.
Still, it didn’t stop her from finding Yu Zhiwan’s scent intoxicating. That distinctive fragrance had imprinted itself in her memory since their first meeting, though never before had she smelled it this clearly, almost brushing against her face.
An Omega’s pheromones and scent glands were intensely private, as intimate as hidden organs, never to be exposed. Yet Yu Zhiwan lay completely unguarded before her.
The delicate fragrance stirred something in Pei Yujiang, drawing her closer to inhale deeper that soul-soothing aroma.
Noticing her movement, Yu Zhiwan rolled toward her.
With her lower body immobile, turning required core strength, a challenge for the untrained. In the dim glow of the bedside lamp, Pei Yujiang watched the Omega painstakingly shift toward her, elbows straining against the mattress. Her heart softened, and she reached out to gather Yu Zhiwan into her arms, bringing them flush together.
Omegas craved physical contact during heats. Pressed this close, Pei Yujiao could feel the pulsing warmth of neck veins, whether her own or Yu Zhiwan’s, she couldn’t tell.
The fresh scent of rose raspberries wafted into her nostrils, making her slightly dizzy and muddle-headed. Just as she was about to drift off to sleep, she felt Yu Zhiwan pulling her hand onto her own stomach.
Pei Yujiao’s ears instantly grew warm.
She wanted to pull away, but feared hurting Yu Zhiwan’s feelings. Omegas were emotionally fragile during their heat cycles and not easily soothed, so she had no choice but to comply.
Yu Zhiwan’s belly was soft, her abdomen flat, truth be told, it felt quite nice to touch.
But with Yu Zhiwan nestled in her arms, when Pei Yujiang’s hand was pulled around her waist, it was all too easy to accidentally brush against that softness.
An Omega in heat might not find this intrusive, perhaps not even noticing such details, only wanting to nuzzle and cling gently. Yu Zhiwan rested her head against Pei Yujiang’s shoulder, then buried her face in the hollow of her collarbone.
The Omega’s lips occasionally grazed her collarbone, sending tingling, ticklish shivers down her spine. Unable to push her away, Pei Yujiang let Yu Zhiwan continue sniffing at her collarbone.
After a long while, Yu Zhiwan’s muffled, plaintive voice came from where she still lay atop Pei Yujiang, having failed to detect any pheromones:
“Why aren’t you an Alpha?”
“Why should I be an Alpha?” Pei Yujiang countered.
Truthfully, she now thought being a Beta was perfectly fine wonderful, even. No need for gland removal to avoid pheromonal disturbances. In situations like this, she could maintain control without having to flee like before.
“If you were an Alpha, you could mark me.”
Yu Zhiwan’s normally clear voice now carried an unconscious sweetness. Her lips drifted over the woman’s collarbone, mistaking the scent of shower gel for pheromones in her desperate need for comfort. This was the critical peak of her heat cycle normally, she would have taken suppressants by now.
Suppressants were like water dousing flames, instantly extinguishing an Omega’s desires, especially the high-potency ones that could bring immediate icy calm. But Pei Yujiang knew that if she got up to fetch the suppressants now, her relationship with Yu Zhiwan would freeze over just as quickly.
Omegas in heat were unreasonable by nature, and having their urges interrupted only made them more so.
Yu Zhiwan poked her several times with delicate fingers, her tone coquettish as she naturally fell into a spoiled tone:
“Hey, why aren’t you an Alpha?”If you’re so disdainful, then get off me!
Pei Yujiang screamed internally, on the verge of breaking down.
Her ears burned crimson, but she steeled herself, mustering all her soothing skills to murmur hoarsely:
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault.” I’ll reincarnate as an Alpha next time.”
With Yu Zhiwan still lying against her, Pei Yujiang couldn’t see her expression or gauge whether this answer satisfied her. But soon, the Omega wriggled lazily in her arms:
“Then I’ll give you a chance mark me, and you’ll become an Alpha.”
Pei Yujiang felt all the blood in her body rush to her head, her cheeks burning as if about to explode. She’d never been with an Omega in heat before had hardly even interacted with Omegas at all.
Long ago, one of their comrades got married. At the time, the military situation had relaxed considerably, so they allowed her to take a short honeymoon. Later, when Pei Yujiang reunited with her, a group of close friends gathered to chat. Someone who’d been drinking smirked mischievously and asked:
“You came back so soon didn’t your wife’s heat cycle keep you tied up?”
The woman blushed furiously but, basking in being the only one among them with a wife, secretly boasted:
“She clings to me every day even outside her heat cycle. I had to ask her to take suppressants first, if it had been her heat period, I probably wouldn’t have been able to return at all.”
Pei Yujiang had no interest in others’ romantic affairs and merely smiled faintly at the time, joining in the good-natured teasing.
But she never imagined just how clingy an Omega in heat could be, far worse than she’d anticipated!
Most crucially, both Omegas and Alphas lose some rationality during their special cycles. While Omegas aren’t as aggressive as Alphas, their minds become muddled, sometimes even experiencing memory gaps where they can’t recall their own words or actions.
Pei Yujiang certainly didn’t think Yu Zhiwan had feelings for her, but she instinctively knew that if she were unscrupulous enough to record Yu Zhiwan in this state, the Omega would likely die of embarrassment upon regaining clarity.
But being a person with moral principles, she’d never do such a thing.
When Yu Zhiwan received no response, she didn’t get angry. Instead, she suddenly waved her hands about. Pei Yujiang caught one, but when she tried to interlace their fingers, Yu Zhiwan refused, instead running her hand up Pei Yujiang’s arm. Pei Yujiang hurriedly covered her chest with one hand while bending down to accommodate her.
She wondered what Yu Zhiwan intended, but after reaching her face, the Omega simply pinched her cheek hard.
Pei Yujiang’s smooth, pleasant skin seemed to delight Yu Zhiwan, who kneaded her face enthusiastically as if it were dough.
“Little Yu, are you… inadequate?”
Pei Yujiang: “Ouch!” That hurt!
Hearing her reaction, Yu Zhiwan gently soothed:
“It’s alright, even if you’re inadequate, I still like you. I don’t fancy Alphas like Liu Huanran.”
Pei Yujiang: “Mmmhmm!”
With Yu Zhiwan pinching her cheeks, her mouth forced into an “O” shape, she could only mumble incoherently. The culprit Yu Zhiwan, however, seemed delighted and pointed to her own crimson lips.
Pei Yujiang realized that unless she complied, this night wouldn’t end easily. She deeply regretted not firmly rejecting Yu Zhiwan earlier.
But it was too late now, Yu Zhiwan was already in bed with her, and backing out would earn the Omega’s lasting resentment. Having endured so much already, she might as well see this through to the end.
Closing her eyes, Pei Yujiang pecked Yu Zhiwan’s cheek lightly, it could hardly even be called a kiss.
That brief contact made her lips burn as if set aflame.
The next day, Pei Yujiang slept until noon, a miracle for someone who usually exercised at dawn and never slept past 6 AM.
The reason was simple: the Omega had been exhausting the night before. Though nothing physical had actually occurred, Yu Zhiwan’s constant demands now wanting this, now that completely devoid of her usual poise and elegance, had left Pei Yujiang utterly drained, both physically and mentally.
Moreover, the Omega’s pheromones were quite pleasant, growing even more intense during her heat, filling the entire room with fragrance. Pei Yujiang particularly loved the rose scent in her pheromones. After finally coaxing the Omega to sleep, she herself drifted off, lulled by the fragrance of roses.
Before bed, Yu Zhiwan had been half-persuaded, half-tricked into drinking a pouch of oral suppressants. These worked slowly, merely alleviating discomfort rather than significantly affecting her heat perfect for someone in Yu Zhiwan’s current state.
When Pei Yujiang opened her eyes, she could hear the relentless patter of rain outside.
It was still pouring, just as heavily as before.
Her phone had been on silent the previous night, and now, upon checking, she found a flood of messages. Immediately, her thoughts shifted away from the awkwardness of last night.
Pei Yujiang kept her eyes glued to her phone as she replied to several messages.
The flood control office had finally taken notice of the heavy rainfall. They issued a mandatory stay-at-home order, announcing that patrol teams would soon be dispatched. All non-essential businesses were to close, except for those critical to public welfare.
Whether people ventured outside was secondary, no one in their right mind would willingly brave such a downpour.
The local government also promised to deploy rescue boats for supply runs, instructing property managers to compile shopping lists for each residential area, which would then be delivered collectively.
But Pei Yujiang doubted they’d handle it efficiently. Now just an ordinary citizen, she held no authority to take charge on the front lines.
She could volunteer, but even if the government was recruiting which wasn’t certain last time, she’d had to resort to drastic measures to get officials to pay attention. Now, they’d probably recoil at the sight of her.
Unless absolutely necessary, she couldn’t go back. If they found some excuse to detain her for “causing trouble,” it’d be game over.
Beside her, Yu Zhiwan slept peacefully. The oral suppressants worked slowly but effectively, likely keeping her adrift in deep slumber.
Pei Yujiang got up quietly, freshened up, and sprayed air freshener in the room before heading to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
She wasn’t much of a cook, but with a little help from her phone, she managed to whip up toast with fried eggs and a pot of oatmeal porridge.
It was a nutritious meal, ideal for an Omega recovering from heat.
When she returned, Yu Zhiwan was already awake.
The events of last night still left Pei Yujiang feeling awkward, but Yu Zhiwan seemed to remember nothing. Hearing her return, she even greeted her.
Pei Yujiang was more than relieved she herself couldn’t recall some details either. But she was certain nothing inappropriate had happened. She was a lady, after all, not the type to take advantage of a disoriented Omega in heat.
“I made breakfast. Would you like to eat together?”
Yu Zhiwan agreed.
Though disabled, Yu Zhiwan didn’t need much assistance. Pei Yujiang simply handed her the wheelchair. Blind people often relied on hearing and touch to navigate, and Yu Zhiwan’s smart wheelchair mapped out the house effortlessly, guiding her to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash up.
While Yu Zhiwan was washing up, Pei Yujiang browsed through local news from Wing City.
The reports mainly aimed to reassure the public, with no mention of flood warnings or the likelihood of flooding. Every outlet followed the same script minor variations at best.
Local news had to pass government approval, meaning this narrative came straight from Wing City’s leadership.
Though the disaster risk couldn’t be ignored, many officials would rather hide the truth to protect their positions. As long as they kept the federal authorities in the dark, they could downplay the damage and avoid tarnishing their records.
Pei Yujiang decided she couldn’t wait any longer. She called Pei Jinhuai directly and requested control of the publicity department.
Surprisingly, Pei Jinhuai wasn’t upset about their argument days earlier instead, she seemed genuinely pleased.
“Xiao Yu, what else do you need? Is there anything Mom can do for you?”
In Pei Jinhuai’s doting eyes, even if her daughter had been aimless before, she was still her precious girl. But seeing her take initiative, especially for such a noble cause, made Pei Yujiang seem almost divine in her mother’s eyes.
Over the phone, Pei Yujiang overheard Pei Jinhuai whispering to Fan Zhaozhao, showering her with exaggerated praise.
Fan Zhaozhao: “Right, right, right.”
Suddenly, the call changed hands, Pei Jinhuai must have picked up another phone to contact the publicity minister. The voice that came through next was Jiang Wenxiu’s, lazily playing a game in the background, its soundtrack faintly audible:
“Jie, the rain’s so heavy outside. Aren’t you coming back?”
The drainage system here was decent, but Pei Jinhuai’s villa was undoubtedly better you got what you paid for, after all. A modest apartment couldn’t compare to a luxury estate, especially with top-tier security. Pei Yujiang glanced at the pouring rain outside and felt the urge to return.
If it were just her, she wouldn’t mind staying but Yu Zhiwan was here too.
The question was whether Yu Zhiwan would agree to live with them.
And how to explain it to her family.
Pei Yujiang didn’t answer. She hung up after Pei Jinhuai added her and the publicity team to a group chat. Settling in with her laptop, she typed rapidly between bites of a small bread roll.
Yu Zhiwan stirred her oatmeal, the spoon clinking softly against the bowl:
“You’re going back?”
Pei Yujiang was busy instructing the group to execute her plan at top speed. Donations had been made yesterday, today, they just needed to showcase the e-certificates and push publicity. If necessary, she’d buy a trending tag. There was no way a small city like Wing City could suppress this.
Hearing Yu Zhiwan’s question, Pei Yujiang swallowed her bread and answered honestly:
“I am considering it. The conditions at home are better, but if I take you back, it’ll be hard to explain our relationship.”
“Remember when I rescued you at that factory? Someone sent me an anonymous tip. I went out of curiosity, but my mom thought I’d kidnapped you to keep you as some hidden treasure.”
Pei Yujiang felt their rapport was strong enough now, Yu Zhiwan trusted her, so she shared the story as a joke, another way to prove her innocence.
At that time, it was indeed that scumbag Liu Huanran who sent her the message, which the system could confirm. If not for her strong moral compass, Yu Zhiwan might have been bullied. Who knows what that trashy Alpha Liu Huanran was thinking, with his head full of nonsense.
After finishing her speech, Pei Yujiang continued typing passionately in the group chat to rally everyone. But just as her words landed, Yu Zhiwan’s spoon clanged loudly against the bowl.
“How is it hard to explain?” she asked in confusion. “But last night, didn’t you call me ‘wife’?”
