Chapter 51: This One Has Real Skill
Yang Xue had expected a visual feast and was quite looking forward to it.
The result…
These people either just shouted “Hei-hei-ha-hei!” while waving their arms around, or they were knocked down by the estate guards before they even started.
Yang Xue covered her face; she truly couldn’t bear to watch. Their skills were even worse than her own amateur “three-legged cat” martial arts.
“Big brother, your people aren’t up to par,” she remarked.
The manager’s face also looked a bit strained. He had taken in so many people, yet not a single one was useful. It seemed they were destined for nothing but odd jobs and sweeping floors.
“Is there anyone else? If you actually know how to fight, step up. Don’t come up here just to embarrass me,” the manager shouted himself this time.
Consequently, no one stood up. Everyone was afraid of losing face.
Yang Xue was disappointed. Seeing so many people in the courtyard earlier, she had high hopes of finding two people she liked. Now, she was utterly let down.
The manager decided right then and there that he would have to train these people in the future. They couldn’t just wait around to sweep floors; they needed to be capable of something else.
Sigh… it’s just a business, yet it’s giving me such a headache.
Yang Xue scanned the area once more. Seeing no one else, she sighed. “Big brother, since there’s no one I’m looking for, let’s leave it at this for today. Keep an eye out for me, and I’ll come back in a few days, alright?”
“Sure, miss, I’ll keep an eye out for you.”
Yang Xue emphasized: “Big brother, they must be able to fight.”
“Understood.”
Yang Xue prepared to leave. Since there were no suitable candidates, there was no reason to buy two useless people.
“Wait a moment!”
Just as Yang Xue’s foot was about to cross the threshold, she was stopped by a deep, resonant voice.
She turned around to see a tall, thin man stepping out from the crowd. “I can try.”
Seeing how little meat he had on his bones, Yang Xue didn’t hold much hope, but she turned back anyway. You can’t judge a book by its cover, she thought. What if he actually can fight?
Seeing her approach, the man said, “Miss, before I demonstrate, I have a request. If you can agree to it, I will show you immediately. If not, then forget it.”
Yang Xue raised an eyebrow inwardly. This man dared to set conditions before even showing his skill—it meant he had confidence, and confidence suggested real ability.
Interested, Yang Xue said, “Fine, speak. As long as it’s not unreasonable, I can consider it.”
The man hesitated for a moment before saying, “I have a young sister at home. If you choose me, I want to know if I can bring her with me.”
“Don’t worry, she won’t interfere with my work. She will just be by my side so I can ensure her safety.”
Yang Xue asked, “How can you guarantee she won’t interfere? If I choose you, you must be on call at all times.”
“Besides protecting me and my family, there might be other tasks.”
The man lowered his head in thought. “Normally, I’ll just have her stay in the room where we rest, is that alright?”
Yang Xue questioned him again, “But are you comfortable leaving her alone in a room where men sleep? You should know, your quarters won’t be private.”
“Then… I can have her help sweep the courtyard during the day. Would that work?”
Yang Xue could see that this man’s desire to keep his sister close was very strong. She guessed they were the only two left in their family. However, she couldn’t simply agree out of pity; she wasn’t going to compromise her requirements.
“How old is she?”
“Twelve.”
That was older than Yang Ru and Yang Tian. Since she was a big girl, she shouldn’t need constant supervision, so she likely wouldn’t be a hindrance.
However, she still needed to see how capable this man was. If his skills were truly impressive, she could agree. If he was just average, she’d have to think about it. If he was unremarkable, there was nothing to consider.
“Show me what you can do first. If your ability convinces me, I’ll agree to let you bring your sister.”
Hearing her soften, the man immediately let out a sigh of relief and smiled.
He had actually been hesitating. Previously, he had looked for work everywhere with his sister, but he was either rejected or she was forced to work. Even though she wasn’t paid and only ate two meals a day, if she didn’t do the work well, she would be beaten.
He had argued with people out of anger, which usually resulted in them being kicked out. This cycle repeated until the two siblings could no longer afford food.
This time, he decided to go all in and sell himself. Observing Yang Xue, he felt she looked like a good person, so after much thought, he decided to take the chance.
The one fighting the man was once again an estate guard. The guard assumed the man would be just like the others—fragile and easy to beat—so he didn’t take him seriously.
Unexpectedly, the man launched a direct strike at his face the moment they started. Startled, the guard retreated several steps, no longer daring to be careless, and began his attack.
He threw a punch, which the man dodged with a side-step before delivering a powerful sidekick. The guard blocked it, but the force was so great that his forearm throbbed with pain.
Yang Xue’s eyes lit up as she watched his moves. This was exactly the kind of person she was looking for! The others before him were nothing but “crooked melons and split jujubes.”
Within a few rounds, the guard was defeated. Yang Xue could tell that this man didn’t just know “a little” martial arts; he was highly skilled.
After the demonstration, the man cupped his fists toward Yang Xue.
Yang Xue was equally straightforward. She turned to the manager and said, “Big brother, I’ll take him. How much?”
The manager was just thinking about naming a high price when Yang Xue added, “Big brother, I’m calling you ‘big brother,’ so don’t you go scamming me.”
“Even though I think highly of him, if your price isn’t reasonable, I’ll turn around and walk away.”
The manager’s expression stiffened. Seeing how good the man’s skills were, he indeed intended to hike the price.
“Besides, he comes with family baggage, which makes him harder for you to sell, doesn’t it? Big brother, give me a fair price so we don’t have to bicker.”
The manager laughed. “Miss, I run a legitimate business. My prices are fair; I wouldn’t dream of cheating you.”
Yang Xue found it amusing. What part of this is a “legitimate business”?
“Since you’re so straightforward, I’ll give you a straightforward price: ten taels.”
Yang Xue took a step back. “Big brother, farewell!” With that, she actually turned to leave.
The manager panicked. Business was slow lately, and with the price of grain rising, nobody was buying servants. Having finally landed a deal, he couldn’t let it slip away.
